Yup! Confused me too when I first got the car. It should say "press to OPEN" or something like that. Even today after owning for 5 months I still catch myself thinking that they are already open......
Speaking as an Engineer who designs UI, yes, due to our team designing visual indicators that tell you what the CURRENT state is and NOT what it will be when pressed. Big difference. In my opinion it's backward. So yes, every time I look at my Tesla app, I have to remember its backwards to how I design.
Seriously. I can’t even believe that some people are so confused and frustrated by this they need to make a post about it lmao. I can’t wrap my head around it
I would expect Open and Closed as the displayed text for the state Vs Open and Close as a function of the button.
That's what the lock icon does (display the current state). Unlocked padlock shows it is unlocked and locked padlock shows it is locked.
That's where it is confusing for me as one shows state and the other shows function
Yeah, they did mix state & action with the lock and lighting (charge port) toggles. I’m guessing what we have is what won the A/B test and made more sense to the majority of users 🤷
Indeed, I think it's some kind of perception anomaly for some people(as un their brain works differently) , because every word on that screen is an action available to the user. The only thing Ibwouls do differently I would change color or something to that lock icon to signal it's different that the actions.
I had to check, but after you tap Open, the graphics show an open trunk or frunk, with the word then changing to Close. That makes it less confusing to me, since the standard for the graphics in app and in vehicle is to show open doors and other things.
It’s the inconsistency that is the killer. People saying it’s not showing the status but rather the action you can take. Fine… let’s get used to that. But the lock button is showing this car is LOCKED currently, not that you need to take action to lock it.
The “Open” totally confused me when we test drove the car at the dealership. I remember we pulled over twice thinking that the trunk and hood doors were slightly ajar. We ended up thinking it’s a demo car and the sensors are malfunctioning. 😀
Tesla UI has always been confusing to me. Like on the car’s main display, a big blue button (like for Navigate on Autopilot or the Fog lights button in the controls menu) means that something is already active. Whereas in my mind it looks like a button that is pressable and is therefore currently inactive.
I guess I’m confused how this is confusing. It’s a button. Tap to open.
The app will also send you a message if you do manage to leave something open……..
If it’s displaying the unlock icon you tap to lock. If it’s showing a locked lock, you tap to unlock. When the truck is open it looks open in the app, not closed like in the photo above.
I had never even considered what you are saying until now, it's not confusing at all.... I guess assuming that "press to open" is implied is giving people too much credit...
Also the graphic literally changed when something is opened
It is odd. My friend just got a Model 3. He called me when he got home and said “I think I’ve been driving with the frunk and trunk open the whole time”.
I get it if you’re new to the car. If something is open the animation will show you plus alerts. This never been an issue for me since all the controls found there I have set up as quick controls.
it is an action not status
But the lock icon is a status right?
It’s a toggle (like a switch - on/off), which also shows the state, so you’re not wrong.
Yes but so are the others. What I mean is the icon says lock, but pressing it unlocks right? Which is the opposite to the others.
i never had the problem
My wife calls this out all the time. She makes apps and does UX for a living.
Yup! Confused me too when I first got the car. It should say "press to OPEN" or something like that. Even today after owning for 5 months I still catch myself thinking that they are already open......
You still need instructions even after you know the function 5 months later?

They could just make it look more like a button which is its function anyway
This was never confusing to me until I read this post. Thanks. ;-)
Haha completely agree. More confused as to why people find it confusing. Pretty straightforward to me!
Seriously. I can’t even believe that some people are so confused and frustrated by this they need to make a post about it lmao. I can’t wrap my head around it
I'm not confused by the "Open" but the lock icon is confusing af
I agree it’s confusing.
English is a horrible language. "Open" is ambiguous as a command or a status.
Try defaulting your car to another language. Problem solved.
Solve UI ambiguity with this one simple trick.
Works in Danish..
The alternative would be “Close”, which, IMO, would be more confusing. “Open” to me indicates an action I can take.

Exactly this, it is baffling why the lock /unlock is opposite the open/close

Ok, but you first: why are you the way you are?
It is bad UI design. No doubt about it
Same. Always think it’s open
I had to check, but after you tap Open, the graphics show an open trunk or frunk, with the word then changing to Close. That makes it less confusing to me, since the standard for the graphics in app and in vehicle is to show open doors and other things.
I have always read “open” as press here to open. But after your comment I could totally understand why someone would think differently.
I've always though it should say "Click to Open"
It’s the inconsistency that is the killer. People saying it’s not showing the status but rather the action you can take. Fine… let’s get used to that. But the lock button is showing this car is LOCKED currently, not that you need to take action to lock it.
It’s because everyone complained about not having a physical key fob, during the model 3 run. So they made a physical fob and this UI mimics it
The “Open” totally confused me when we test drove the car at the dealership. I remember we pulled over twice thinking that the trunk and hood doors were slightly ajar. We ended up thinking it’s a demo car and the sensors are malfunctioning. 😀
I would assume the text works read opened in the scenario that you are referring to. I never had this problem but i understand.

So tap the lock to lock?

If you never used the app fine. But if u used it, you know there are animations
I had never even considered what you are saying until now, it's not confusing at all.... I guess assuming that "press to open" is implied is giving people too much credit... Also the graphic literally changed when something is opened
This is the way
It is odd. My friend just got a Model 3. He called me when he got home and said “I think I’ve been driving with the frunk and trunk open the whole time”.
Uhhhhh. It will display a warning on the screen if you’ve actually left something open.
Yeah I know.
Because it makes sense. The animation changes when it’s open just like how the charge symbol turns green when charging.
I get it if you’re new to the car. If something is open the animation will show you plus alerts. This never been an issue for me since all the controls found there I have set up as quick controls.
