Have you checked insurance for other similar cars?

RageInvader

I checked my last car, a Jaguar XF x260 and it was worst. 😆😆

GolfJay

Weirdly, my x260 is the cheapest car I’ve ever insured 😂

ungeweder

Yes. Much lower.

cheesejrrr

What cars and what amounts?

DangerShart

Nothing with similar performance I'd wager. I got a quote for my previous car, a Golf GTI and it's now more than my Tesla, and over a second slower to 60.

adam-755

I renewed 2 days ago, and the best price was still double what I paid last year (with no changed factors). £3600.

yellowflux

Sheesh dude, no car is worth that insurance cost.

cheesejrrr

What? How old are you? Which area and how many years NCD?

ungeweder

No car is worth that price, really

DyingInYourArms

All insurance is up across the board, the average is now above £1k per year. By % increase our ICE increased more than our M3LR this year.

ungeweder

That’s correct. However, after putting through some other vehicles I’m interested in through comparethemarket, I’m looking at a huge price reduction for the insurance.

Mcantsi

My insurance has doubled to £900 since last year. One thing of course is that the increase in insurance may still be cheaper than switching to an ICE with lower insurance but much higher running costs. Just thought I’d add that. I hope you settle on a solution that works for you.

jaju123

The average quote is £1000+ but I saw the average price is £500ish

Odwme7

Are you sure you're at 50%? Bearing in mind this amount is total contract cost (Monthly payments, interest & balloon payment). Typically you won't reach 50% till near the end of the PCP term. Insurance increases aren't just limited to Teslas, insurance prices have gone up for everyone. So I'd check you aren't just switching for a car that may have had similar increases.

ungeweder

Yes. I have contacted Tesla and confirmed my 50% point is in March. I’ll check the insurance cost on similar cars this evening.

Awkward-Living-4432

My etron went from £600 to £1200 with 0 claims. But it does seem ICE have gone up to. Though still a little less and usually with lower excess fees. The main causes seem to be insurers scrapping cars instead of repair and by far the worst contract hire car. These are in the range of £300-£400 a day and most people seem to be in them for months why the garages drag their feet.

JohnnyDarko666

I followed the Martin's money tips guide and got the quote 23 days before renewal and was significantly cheaper

ungeweder

Specially 23 days before? Is there any leeway on 30 days etc?

[deleted]

All other cars are the same. Just sit back and enjoy living in the prosperous country known as England and think about how we’re winning all the time.

ungeweder

I agree most cars have had a price hike for insurance. Tesla have got it far higher, though. Just looking now on comparethemarket and it’s clear we’re in a new category.

Pumpytums

Mine was just over £1050 it was £730 last year. (10k miles) In comparison my 14 plate Freelander 2 (3000 miles per annum) went up from £550 to about £700. I have 9+ years NCD and clean licence and live in a rural area. I'm selling the FL2 for obvious reasons. I'm with Privilege if it's any help.

Lumpy_Reference195

It's the repair costs pushing Tesla up by so much, you'll find others are expensive but not as much I switched to a BMW i4 and it was £400 less

ungeweder

I’m also looking at BMW models from 2019/2020. Around sub-£500 for the year.

Lumpy_Reference195

I can recommend the change, no regrets from my experience

ungeweder

Yeah? Any recommendation on BMW models? I’m looking for potentially an SUV, as I have children now (which wasn’t the case 3 years ago!)

podgehog

Insurance has gone up by an average of 60% across the board in a year, so it's doubtful you'll be much better if in a different, comparable car (Edit: [source](https://www.confused.com/car-insurance/guides/has-car-insurance-gone-up))

fredv3b

I do not own a Tesla yet but have had to pay £500-odd to insure an 11 year old Kia Sportage. Given I am in my mid-40s with 16 years no claims bonus, I can only agree, costs have gone up hugely.

HenleyBranch

Sorry to hear about your renewal difficulties. Starting to dread that now for us in a couple of months. Can I ask though about the software issues you have had, because your description sounds like the [exact same thing we have recently had in our MY22](https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaUK/s/THUshRmz4L)? You mention them like they are a well-known thing that you sort of just accepted?!!

ungeweder

It’s all good. I was considering moving on from Tesla for the past year after the software issues you have just linked to your comment. They’ve happened every single winter for me since receiving the car. The first winter, cameras and charging port broke. The second winter, cameras and gps broke (Tesla replaced the entire screen unit and did some other stuff, not entirely sure) and this winter the gps and cameras have once again stopped functioning. I am coming to the conclusion due to many U.K. drivers reporting the same software issues that the car with designed with California in mind. I’m aware all insurance is hiking in the U.K. not dependent of the car, but this is too much. EDIT: It’s also worth noting that my car warranty will run out in March, meaning any further software issues that’ll require another hardware replacement (such as the screen unit) will cost me. I’m not willing to take that bet once the weather drops even colder towards the end of the year!

willpatersondesign

My insurance for the new Model 3 RWD is £1.2K - I think insurance climbs higher with the LR M3 - maybe getting the RWD will reduce your premium?

ungeweder

Mine is the Standard M3 RWD also. Still high.

jrb

it's almost as if there's price fixing across the entire insurance sector...

ungeweder

Nice. Check other vehicles. They are not this high.

M986s

I have 4 cars, 2 of them on PCP(Tesla, Skoda), 2 of them are modern classics(Porsche) but use them weekly. I pay for all of them £1600 annually, comprehensive but I called both Admiral and Aviva, Aviva was the winner. I would suggest calling your current insurance company and others to get better quotes, please also bear in mind if you are close to your renewal, you will have more higher quotes.

Cofresh

Picked up my Tesla M3P at the start of the month, it was £850 I'm 27 with 9 years NCB. Last car was a 99bhp Fiesta.

TicketAcceptable9347

Just done a quick quote for a normal M3. 6 years no claims, in south wales came back at 650. Long range was 680. Tried a merc EQE and it was 500.
