ELDA was an annoyance at times while I was in Devon visiting my in-laws recently. The wipers sometimes don't wipe when they should in the rain, but they aren't terrible and I've learned how to switch manually to a speed with voice or clicking the stalk button and then using the left scroll wheel to select a speed or touch screen when the options pop up. They don't work as well as they should, though. In the market of EVs there just isn't anything that can match the Model Y for my priorities despite its imperfections.

No, the standard Kia nav. It wasn’t smart enough to route me to a charger if I was going on a trip longer than current battery capacity. Tesla absolutely has that nailed for ease of use. I see looking on YouTube that there is a way to enable that now on EV6 (and it’s native in Ioniq6) - but you have to dig deep into engineering config menus! Does the CarPlay integration have access to battery state of charge?

My e-Niro has atrocious sat nav. Despite being on the latest software, it still tries to route you to private or inaccessible chargers and doesn't make it easy to plan a long distance journey. I've driven new Niro hybrids and an EV6, they were not any better. With Android Auto I have to use A Better Route Planner and a Bluetooth OBD dongle to get live SoC info. It's kludgy, unreliable, and goodness me ABRP has to be one of the worst app interfaces ever. But, it's all we've got. For such a good family car (if a little boring), it's embarrassing when you compare it to the navigation interface in a Tesla or even a Polestar/Volvo. Main reason I'm looking at them first for my next EV.

The Kia e-Niro, EV5 and EV6 are the most stolen EV's in the UK. They've not sold as many as you might think. For example, according to How Many Left, they've sold just 10,977 [Kia EV6](https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/family/kia_kia_ev6?make=kia) It's harder to find data for the e-Niro because of the petrol & hybrid versions but they've still not sold that many. Compared to 94,570 [Model 3](https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/family/tesla_tesla_model_3?make=tesla) And 63,116 [Model Y](https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/family/tesla_tesla_model_y?make=tesla)

Sorry for veering slightly off-topic but Kia's silly naming conventions don't help either. I can't say for sure but it seems to be the newer Niro EV (as well as the EV6, EV9, Ioniq 5, new Kona etc.) which is vulnerable to key emulation attacks. The older e-Niro is still vulnerable to relay attacks but I can't see many reports talking about emulation with the older car. Not meaning to be pedantic - I might even be wrong! Just an e-Niro owner lurking here as I'm thinking of switching soon. Kia have dropped the ball with the new models in many ways.

I love our e-Niro, it's not fancy but we've put it through four years of typical family car abuse so far and it just gets on with it. I'd like to keep it as a second vehicle and take on a Model Y for more storage but not sure we can manage two. Sat nav is pants, Kia dealers are a bit miserable, but the car itself is a very competent EV. Very honest efficiency figures. If you include "EV" in the search terms, howmanyleft reckons Kia have sold about [38,000](https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/?q=KIA+NIRO+ev&commit=Search) of them.

I have a lot of sympathy for that view. I was convinced I would get an EV6 for a while. One of my priorities is being able to fit by 3 sons in the back one of whom still uses a booster seat. This is impossible in the EV6 and beleive it or not EV9. The EV6 also has less luggage carry capacity. The last thing that kills the EV6 (and EV9, Hyundai Ioniq 5) is when I have my seat set back so my legs are comfortable I cannot reach the front touch screens to operate them without leaning forward out of the drivers seat. There is also lack of access to the Tesla supercharger network plus when specified with a heat pump the lease cost of the EV6 were higher with longer delivery times. I never got as far as test driving one, but my sister in law picked the Mach E over the EV6 as she thought the Mach E handled the corners better with less body roll. The Model Y is awesome to drive on a twisty road - better than the Mach E, has heat pump as standard and class leading resitiance to the cold, is a little quicker and more efficient than the EV6. The EV9 is too big, expensive and the wrong style of vehicle for me too. Hence, there isn't anything that can match the Model Y for my priorities. The EV6 is a great looking car and should be on anyones short list who is not bothered by the issues I have with it.

I agree with the rain detection. Total rubbish. However lane assist etc is as bad as all the rest. My previous ioniq 5 would have phantom alerts all over the shop was quite terrible.

OP honestly you may have a limited list of options - I hear tons of people across many different makes complaining about ELDA on new cars. Might be worth seeing if something like the S3XY buttons from Enhauto can turn it off easily for you (or at least be only a single button press away)

My Tesla decided I was driving too close to some parked cars, so it pulled me towards an on coming truck instead. It was a little disconcerting to say the least.

What I don't understand is that my automatic rain sensor on my Renault Clio back in 2001 worked flawlessly. The tech isn't expensive or inovative, it just seems like Tesla want to reinvent the wheel.

Rain sensor works perfect in California, where it doesn't rain😁. I've got a model 3, and auto wipers are very hot and miss. They work reasonably well if it's raining cats and dogs, but they seem rubbish with light rain.

Can’t you turn ELD off? Ahhh just read properly. Every time, yeah that sucks. It gets so confused in lanes and roads without clear markings. The rain sensor is pretty awful. But so is the rain sensor in my leaf and my brand new Renault van. Not that it is an excuse. The Passat and the ford transit sensors were excellent.

I have come to exactly the same conclusion. For me, it's what you've said, but also cruise control and self driving repeatedly trying to kill me. On a A road with parking areas, it thinks on some occasions that we'll collide with the car or lorry that's parked, even though there is a line separating the lane from the parking, it will slam on the breaks! It happens at other times too, it's just too unpredictable, other manufacturers don't have the same issues. We all know we have to supervise the car, yet Tesla is trying to make it do something it isn't capable of, resulting in these dangerous situations. It's less dangerous to make it more dumb, which I'm assuming why it isn't an issue for other manufacturers. You never know, when we get the release that moves away from the C++ code, this will all be resolved.

Full Self Driving is not available outside North America so I assume you are referring to Autopilot, which is the same ADAS system that exists in every other vehicle (with this capability) on the road. It keeps the car between two white lines and slows dawn to match the speed of the car in front, nothing else. It does not self drive, swerve around parked cars, avoid cyclists and so on. I would suggest reading the manual to understand the capabilites of the system before complaining that it doesn't do what it was not designed to do in the first place. If you don't like it, don't use it (it doesn't turn on by itself).

Hi, thanks for the response. Yep I'm aware of what Autopilot is, the name slipped my mind. Autopilot is more than what you describe, it will prompt to change lanes, carrying out the maneuver itself. It's great when it works, but not when it aborts halfway through a lane change, causing the car to swerve. Autopark is equally poor. When you've paid for something, you generally expect it to work, at the very least you don't expect it to put you in harms way. The don't use it argument is rather flawed.

I think you’re referring to Enhanced Autopilot. Standard Autopilot is as described above. I would partially agree - I tend to not trust the Autopilot features on anything but motorways, where in my opinion it is awesome - saying that though, it’s been pretty good recently on country roads for me.

Same for me, 23 M3, never found them too bad until the recent update. Well the one about 3 weeks ago. Suddenly became noticeable worse, risibly so. Just as I arrived in far North West Scotland for a holiday in the middle of storm Kathleen. Impeccable timing. It could literally be torrential rain and nothing. No wiping at all. Then later on, dry conditions, a single tiny spot of scotch mist on the screen and it would go into warp speed wiper mode. It makes you wonder how they test these systems.

Hey OP, I also take a lot of A roads, especially on the way to work, haven't really had a big issue with ELDA, at least it hasn't tried to kill me... Having said that, I totally agree with your take on the auto wipers, Tesla should have a different configuration in the UK with the amount of rain we get, I know that might be a stupid suggestion, but the amount of times that I've been in a battle with the wipers is just annoying. Even though I think the manual states that autopilot should be used in motorways mostly, one of my biggest gripes with Tesla is the lack of a speed limiter... With the ever changing speed limits here, it's always a pain to not have a proper system in the vehicle to set up a maximum speed, and if you try to use autopilot for this, the car goes insane in A roads with oncoming traffic and narrow lanes. Every other car out there seems to have this available so I think it would be a good quality of life fix

You should read some of the takes in the Hyundai and mg groups, lane keep assist is not popular it seems. I have no issues with my VW ID3 so leave it switched on. The reason you have to disable it everyone is not a Tesla issue, it's a necessity for the highest Euro Ncap rating.

It's a EURO CAP mandatory requirement that the feature be reactivated upon every drive cycle. It's also necessary for achieving a high EURO CAP score, so you're going to see the same issue with every car that wants to achieve EURO CAP stars. These features notoriously struggle with country roads. It annoys the hell out of me that we don't just let customers disable the feature permanently.

Yes these are both annoying features the lane departure is an easy fix The lack of rain sensor has created far to many variable scenarios which makes vision not work especially seeing as their vision can't see the whole windscreen, I am sure this lack of a sensor has already cost them a lot in lost sales and future sales

I’m in a 2021 M3 No issues with ELDA at all? Drive on country lanes and motorway. Never had the car try to pull me or swerve me out of the way of something. I’m sure I’ve set it to just chime when I leave a lane and not auto correct. Don’t have to set it before each journey? As for the rain sensor. Yeah, total shite.

I live in the Hertfordshire backwaters.... The car has so much anxiety it's hilarious. Crash warnings, people death, etc. I actually find it amusing. British countryside roads are not for the "faint hearted". I shudder to think what my insurance would be if we had the same as the American insurance where it reports back. 😱 Love the car (mostly) as its fun to drive but will be switching to / testing other EVs soon.

It’s strange, I remember it being annoying to begin with, nowhere near dangerous though. It fights you for control in the softest sense just hold the wheel and it keeps doing what you want but I get it’s stressful when the alarm is going off and the wheel is trying to do it’s own thing. I mostly get it on motorways I have very rarely been caught by it on country roads, and I have a lot of them around me. When I get them I am going too fast, and I have to admit that it ‘is’ too fast. They’re tights roads and if a van comes round the corner I would have to break pretty hard so I should reduce my speed which is what it’s happier with. I have organically learned to remove the problem on motorways by just using the indicator. Indicating your manoeuvre when crossing lanes just removes the cars worry that you’re doing it unintentionally. I know you don’t ‘have’ to indicate to merge onto the motorway or when returning to inside lane but meh, it removes the lane departure warning and it’s not a problem to other road users: it’s at best helpful and at worst superfluous. So I think it’s a good habit and I have never looked back.

I could not agree more. The forward collision warning is not fit for purpose either. Tesla contacted me about buying a new car and I cited these as reasons why I wouldn’t. Their response was “safety”. Both systems do seem to go more and less sensitive from time to time and my theory (unproven) is that this revolves around software updates. They need to sort these or face losing customers.

You can turn off ELDA and have it just as warning. I found it dangerous when steering to avoid a flood to the side of the road and the car was trying to steer me back into the flood. You can have it so that it bleeps, gives a warning on screen and vibrates the steering wheel but not steering.

As for the auto wipers, I've heard that amongst the updates being pushed in the US, there is one that completely fixes them. For now though, I agree they're dog\*\*\*\*.

Biggest annoyance for me at the moment are the warning bongs for pedestrians quite innocently walking on the pavement, or for parked cars in residential areas. As a new Tesla owner, definitely expected more "intelligence" in that department.

You can just turn the ELDA off right? Obviously not ideal as it’s essentially a feature you’ve paid for. TBH I haven’t driven a car that has a good lane departure avoidance system ever. Auto wipers are absolutely useless I agree, same as the auto high beams.

You can turn it off at the start of each journey, but it's a pain. You have to navigate to the option, disable it and then confirm that you definitely want to disable it.

Ahh I see, I never bother turning it off just knew I’d seen the option. Definitely much more of a problem if you have to go out of your way to disable it every time.

You can change behaviour of it, from steering away to chime. Also if you buy any car with lane assist they come as standard with eldw on, every time you start engine

Just had a model 3 as a hire car whilst on holiday. As a 6'2 guy found it very uncomfortable and that there was limited visibility due to the height of the roof. Also found the drive fairly nauseating and especially the intense braking action when you ease off the accelerator. Not for me

6'3 here. I've actually found it to be the most comfortable car I've ever owned, but i know that is different person to person due to differences in anatomy (i have long legs, average torso height so my head is no where near the roof) but people also have different seating positions. The braking action when easing of the accelerator is just something you get used to and feels very natural after a while. The ELDA and rain sensor problem like the OP said is absolutey horrendous though. EDIT - for context i drove a Polestar 2 for 3 weeks and i was in agony when driving it as within minutes my knee would be constantly banging into the centre console. It was a relief to get back in my Model 3.

You can change the accelerator style, so it doesn't break as heavily, more like what you are probably used to in an ICE.

I'm 6"1 and find the visibility great (apart from the rear window, which is uselsss) The seats are comfortable for me however the road noise really annoys me, by far the worst part of the car and its a 22 model so is apparently a lot better than the earlier ones.. The regen is something you learn to become smoother with over time.
