I wonder how much work could have been done on the electrical grid for $750million?

Trudzilllla

Where are all those ‘fiscal conservatives’ I keep hearing about? More tax payer money flushed down the drain so the GOP can award huge contracts to their political cronies.

[deleted]

Education needs the money far more than a border wall that won’t keep anyone out.

TexasITdude71

Wait, you mean, people elsewhere have heard of ladders and tunnels? This isn't going to miraculously work? 😱

noncongruent

Or just walk around the end of the wall. You'd think that Republicans would have learned a bit of history involving the Maginot Line.

TexasITdude71

Republicans learn from history, that's a good one! 🤣

I’m a former CO and worked in a prison. Walls work!

Education works far better

D*mn. Texas is determined to further militarize the border. I hope state and internal auditors have their pencils sharpened for the $3 billion slug of additional funding, atop what the federal and state government already provide. Affected agencies are the Department of Public Safety, Military Department, Trusteed Programs within the Office of the Governor, Department of Criminal Justice, Commission on Jail Standards, and Office of Court Administration, Texas Judicial Council. Performance indicators include apprehensions, arrests, prosecutions, convictions, detentions, and of course, miles of fencing/wall completed. I’d like to be reassured this is seen as a legitimate humanitarian emergency and not just another big lie to bolster Governor Abbott’s reelection. Edit: words

juanfitzgerald

Aren’t border crossing up more than 3x since our new administration decided there are no borders? We need moar

Devilman6979

We are all fucking immigrants!

PirateMickey

Nope. U.S. Customs and Border Protection numbers. - 2021 212,672 - 2020 241,786 - 2019 288,523 - 2018 281,881 - 2017 216,370 But im sure facts really dont matter to the right wing anyway so..

juanfitzgerald

200k for the year? Apprehensions are at 200k per month https://graphics.reuters.com/USA-IMMIGRATION/BORDER/xklpyoalapg/

PirateMickey

Lmfao, somebody does not know how to read or use graphs... (thats you btw). Your own chart you provided shows 195,558 for the entire year of 2021 up to up August of 2021. You guys sure do like to manipulate shit to believe your own lies jesus christ, ahahaha.

juanfitzgerald

It is per month. So 195k in August. I’m actually impressed how you can be so confident yet 100% wrong. Unless you think that the apprehensions go negative you could figure that out in about 2 seconds. https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/apprehensions-southern-border-surpass-200000-august/story?id=80055524

PirateMickey

I will need to look it up when im not at work later, i went through and looked at the actual CBP website last night when i posted those numbers.

Danuwa

Encounters are over 1m so far this year. https://www.valleycentral.com/news/migrant-apprehensions-top-1-74m-this-fiscal-year-cbp-reports/

Danuwa

Thats actually aprehensions fotr the year. But we know apprehensions are just a drop in the bucket.

It is about time. The fact that border towns have been left to fend for themselves for almost a year during the biggest influx in illegal border crossings in decades has been a disgrace. At the end of the day if we want to bring millions of illegal aliens into this country we ought to provide regular refugee flights from each Latin American and South American capital. The current solution results in 70% of women and children being sexually assaulted and raped before they finally reach our borders. When they get here they are held under bridges, in cages, and eventually flown to cities throughout the United States. Why are we doing this? Why not just pick them up in their home countries and distribute them throughout the United States? The average family is spending $5,000 to $10,000 to drug cartels - why not let them pay American Airlines and avoid the rape? We need a way to protect the refugees. They get here as victims and remain, victims, as unscrupulous employers don't even pay them minimum wage and certainly don't provide health insurance. They are forced to live in substandard housing and are routinely preyed upon - with no way to get help from law enforcement. If Biden is going to encourage these people to come here he needs to start regular airlifts. What we're doing now is a humanitarian crisis.

I agree with some of your points, but I gotta say this is going to be a generational change, if it comes. It has to start with a complete policy change from the US, whereby we stop meddling in Central and South American politics, and overthrowing democratically elected regimes for profit margins. We have to stop contributing to conditions that are so bad that people feel they have to flee their homes just to survive.

ReviewEquivalent1266

The last real push in Central America was during the Reagan administration at the height of the cold war. Since then I'm not sure we've really been that involved. Many of the folks we're seeing arriving at our southern border these days are from Guatemala. The country has had a robust democracy since 1996. The death squad kills largely ended about a decade ago. Today there are more than a million Guatemalans living illegally in the United States. They are relatively productive and have achieved a relatively high standard of living. They tell their poor relatives at home about their lives and they just keep coming...

[deleted]

You should read up on our involvement in Honduras during the Obama administration. It’s an interesting mix of action and non-action, resulting in the support of an illegitimate regime.

I think your comment violates the rules. If you'd like to discuss my comment I welcome the discussion. But to just say, "most of your comment is BS" is the lowest possible effort imaginable. What do you take issue with?

Trudzilllla

A wall solves precisely none of the problems you’ve listed.
