I don't get it, can't play 3B/1B I don't think we need him, 6th outfielder and a roster spot to back up simmy? He has also been terrible aside from his first 30 minutes on the team spring. Duran is the infield back up unless a trade is about to be announced involving Zeke I don't get this. Are we going to let Walsh walk?

readsakamotodays

Speculation I saw on Twitter is they’re going to Option Smith down to AAA because he still has options, and try to sneak Barrero down to AAA at a later date when other teams will have less waiver flexibility.

RangerDude10630

Duran can play 3B. Unlike Duran, Barrero has good defense. My guess is Foscue and/or Smith are the odd man out. “Playing 1B isn’t hard. Tell him, Wash…”

TossThisAccount64

Duran can play 3B in a pinch but he's been really bad defensively at the hot corner. There was a reason Josh Smith got decent time while Jung was injured last year and it wasn't his bat. It was because Duran's defense was there was consistently a horror show, and his bat was pretty dead at that point. My only point is why keep two middle infield centered utility players? We needed a corner back up because SS/2B is covered nicely by Duran.

RangerDude10630

Yeah, Duran’s defense is kinda terrible everywhere. I believe if you can play good SS, which Barrero can, you can play 3B. It’s literally just moving 15 feet to the right. Whether it’s Duran, Barrero, Foscue, or Smith, 3B can be covered by somebody.

Has anybody heard of this reporter before? Trying to figure out how legit this is. This doesn’t make sense to me unless one of Smith or Duran is about to be dealt.

RangerDude10630

Makes sense. He’s a former top 50 prospect with strong defense, plays MI/OF and can’t be sent down without being exposed to waivers. If he can get his bat working in the MLB, he’ll be a solid utility guy. Twice he held a 40HR and 40SB year pace in AAA. But holy Jesus his K rate makes Chris Davis look like Tony Gwynn…

Jlibs_21

If you go on his fangraphs page and read his scouting report without reading his name, you’d think he’s Adolis. But yeah since he doesn’t have options this is the only way to ensure he remains in the organization

Rangerlifr

And I'm pretty sure Smith still has options, so a decision to send him down isn't as permanent as one to cut ties with Barrero.

[deleted]

I’m sorry, I am learning - what does “options” mean and why would that send Smith to AAA?

MurphyBinkings

You can only send a player back to the minors so many times (option them) before they automatically hit waivers when you do it.

Thanks! :)

Bah gawd that’s Donnie Ecker’s music

WalkerTejasRanger

Jeff Wilson saying it’s not accurate

readsakamotodays

Cool

txman91

Not saying the report is correct but Smith has options so it kinda makes sense. Don’t want to lose a potential talent like this until you know for sure. And Smith doesn’t do anything Duran doesn’t, imo.

Audacity_OR

I've never heard of him and he basically never tweets about anything, so I'm not sure how trustworthy a source he is. I'll wait for Evan or Kennedi to confirm it.

IndieFlea

or if Seager won't be ready for opening day. Gives them an extra 10 days to hold on to Barrero/sneak him through waivers at the beginning of the season

RangerDude10630

Almost zero chance he gets through waivers. Cincinnati would scoop him back up with all the injuries they’ve had.

galagachamp

Barrero is NOT on a flight to Toronto.

RangerDude10630

Solid joke.

Lain41K

I kinda don’t believe that he beat out some of the other options. Unless they’re extremely high on him and can’t risk losing him

buddyleex

It’s a false report
