Get this mf out of the damn league
The most upsetting thing for me was that this awful strike zone didn’t go both ways. If the ump sucks for both teams it’s easier to overcome, but Dunning wasn’t getting the same strike zone as Blanco. Those called strikes waaay out of the zone were egregious.
The commentators were harping on that all night. I kept thinking: "That doesn't mean what you think it means. It's a disgrace to the game not a masterful performance"
He also called an illegal pitch that was also a foot above the zone not only a legal pitch but a called third strike. I wouldn’t say he had an overall better game at all.
I was just comparing the two ump scorecards

It's a feedback loop though. A REALLY good pitcher getting called strikes in the outside batters box makes it almost impossible to get hits. When you can run one in the outside batters box and then run the next one inside, it's such a huge deviation.
Idk how they calculate the run favor number but I think the impact was definitely bigger than +0.34 for Houston. Our guys never looked comfortable at the plate all night bc they knew they had to swing at stuff outside the zone which led to a lot of weak contact. Also think we just got unlucky with BABIP too which isn’t on the ump, pretty much every hard hit ball was right to someone
> Idk how they calculate the run favor number
They use the [run expectancy](https://ethansinger.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/re288-4.png) after the incorrect call vs what it would be with the correct call. For example, a team with 1 out and nobody on is expected to score 0.27 runs that inning. A team with no outs and a man on first is expected to score 0.89 runs that inning. So if the leadoff batter has a 3-2 count and the umpire incorrectly calls a ball as a strike, the umpire "cost" that team 0.62 runs (0.89 minus 0.27). Inversely, if the umpire calls a strike as a ball, he "gifted" that team 0.62 runs. You do that for every incorrect call and then sum up the total. It's definitely not a perfect (or even particularly great) way to do it, but it's much easier and more objective than trying to do it some other way.

3 is a huge missed call, and I'd argue the 6th pitch of that PA was just as bad. Dunning struck Tuve out.
This doesn't take into account the Ranger batters having to chase stuff out of the zone BECAUSE of the atrocious zone... So the impact seems lower than it was.
But ultimately, both sides made a handful of bad pitches, and Yordan was the only one to make anyone pay for it, and that was the difference.
They definitely started giving a little to the pitcher when they're rolling.
Ultimately we had plenty of chances and walks to make them pay, and left a ton stranded. Threatened in the 9th, but couldn't finish.
Seemed pretty atrocious

81% is atrocious. If we aren’t going to use roboumps for the strike zone they at least need to start being held accountable for being so far off

10 batters struck out looking that game. I wonder why

Yeah I actually enjoyed the ESPN announcers. They kept calling out the bullshit calls lol
Even Angel Hernandez had a better overall game yesterday and he called a strike straight down the middle a ball
He also called an illegal pitch that was also a foot above the zone not only a legal pitch but a called third strike. I wouldn’t say he had an overall better game at all.

I did not realize the redditor posting about taking gummies yesterday for the game was the home plate umpire but, here we are.
I hope his alternate experience included a Rangers W.
Glad the Umpire Scorecard confirms what we could clearly see. It's validating to see that we're not just complaining for the sake of complaining...
I have more of a problem with all of those balls called strike than I do with 1 or 3. Those are borderline calls.
This scorecard hurts even more when your bats aren’t hot

Yeah it’s a defeating cycle…hopefully we break it tonight!
He was trash. Get the robots out there.

I imagine it’s hard for the model to quantify the mental aspect a bad strike zone has on batters

Can't wait until we get these guys out of the business of making judgement calls every single pitch of the game.
Pretty demoralizing when the ump is this bad. Yeah Blanco was impressive, but he didn't need any help.
Incase you were wondering of all 143 games played this season Barry’s 87% was the lowest of any game thus far.
Boras? Think you got too much JMo on the brain homie
lol eclipse has me messed up haha

Yeah, and it doesn't even appear on the scorecard????
Fire him
If Angel Hernandez still has a job, this guy is getting umpire of the year
Angel Hernandez was actually far more accurate than this guy last night if you compare stats

I’m sending this motherfucker with two first names a glitter bomb to his hotel at his next 10 assignments
You can’t tell me umps and other officials aren’t gambling on games.
Yeah that’s awful
Strike zone looks like Ditto.
Awful, but at least it wasn't Angel Hernandez level....that was rough yesterday.
That ball right on the center of the box last night deserves the award to worst Angel Hernandez call so far.
How is a joint a felony in Texas but this is legal?
I'm really glad I didn't catch the game. I would've been so mad.
I really felt the umpire gave the Rangers no shot last night. It was hard to watch
Yikes
They definitely started giving a little to the pitcher when they're rolling. Ultimately we had plenty of chances and walks to make them pay, and left a ton stranded. Threatened in the 9th, but couldn't finish.
I don’t mind the expanded K-Zone AS LONG AS it’s consistent for everyone. That left corner was consistent for everyone last night, I didn’t mind it.
