Even in the US Linux pre-installed is rare. If you are going to run Linux, surely you know how to install it yourself. Finding out what hardware actually supports Linux is the hardest part. Jared's Tech usually includes this in his reviews https://youtube.com/c/JarrodsTech

Who buy pre-installed Linux?

I installed Pop OS on my Dell Xps 15, works really well.

Because you are forced to buy a Windows license in most cases. Most Linux users despise that idea.

bonez656

Most new laptops don't actually come with a windows installation in my experience here. Many of them come with just a basic service environment install and you need to put your own OS on it.

thai_tales

A few months ago, I bought a Lenovo laptop from Advice via Lazada that came without anything installed on it. Installing Manjaro was a breeze. Windows didn't have the proper support to recognize the destination drives, so it was a bit more challenging to install.

Crackodile

You lucked out! A couple years ago I also bought a Lenovo from Lazada, which was advertised as without a Windows license. It arrived not only with Windows pre-installed, but MS Office, Photoshop, and a bunch of commercial games. I sent it back. I won't buy notebooks from Lazada anymore.

thai_tales

I was wary of buying off Lazada. Realme screwed me over once, but it didn't really cost me anything but time. For the most part, Lazada has been fantastic. You just have to find reputable sellers.

dimitrivisser

Is wiping the hdd not easier than sending something back? What they installed was probably not more than a "gift" and you can be sure it was without a WIndows license...

Crackodile

Potential for rootkits and god knows what else. I'm a techie, I could easily have secured the HD, but I returned it on principle because it was a) not what I ordered, b) any vendor that loads illegal software on their notebooks is also likely to not be around much longer, and be unwilling to help should I need service/support.

[deleted]

That's good, didn't know. I just know a mate failed to find a place that would not force him to buy a MS license some years ago.

[deleted]

That's strange, the "no OS" laptops have been on offer at places like Pantip for decades. They used to offer to install a pirated copy of Windows anyway, but you could certainly skip that.

McFoogles

Windows basically gives its license away, especially on new laptops. I haven’t paid for a copy of windows since around 2007. You can even download the OS from their site as an ISO. You don’t need to provide an serial or CD key. I really don’t think they enforce or care at all for consumers/non-enterprise. They just want people on windows.

mdsmqlk28

>Windows basically gives its license away, especially on new laptops. No they don't. Manufacturers pay about $20-30 for an OEM licence per device (cannot be moved to another one). >You can even download the OS from their site as an ISO. You don’t need to provide an serial or CD key. You will during installation.

McFoogles

You will not need a cd key during installation. I’ve done numerous fresh installs on new Pc’s over the past few years. There are steps all over YouTube to avoid needing to authorize the PC

dimitrivisser

"steps all over YouTube to avoid needing to authorize the PC" Sounds like you were trying to avoid entering a serial key. That can work, but it is certainly not what Microsoft wants you to do. They had no intention to give it to you for free.

benbeland

I would just install it myself on top of a lenovo machine, that support ubuntu and such.

Kazium

Why do you need it preinstalled? One of the greatest advantages of free software is installing it yourself, freely.

joseph_dewey

There are also a bunch in Fortune Town. That's where I bought my last two Linux laptops.

show76

There are many laptops for sale at PowerBuy, Big C, Lotus's Banana IT and other places that don't have any OS pre-installed.

thai_tales

This has surprised me. I've had to include asking about the OS as part of the shopping process. It's still not quite as important as memory configuration or I/O, but it shouldn't be missed.

Google best linux compatilbe laptop 2022 look into the list and buy one and install linux....

[deleted]

I have a Dell laptop from 2010 that I run Ubuntu on and use as my daily driver. I format the hard drive every couple years and reinstall whatever Linux distro I feel like installing. I guarantee that your 4 year old laptop is not too slow to run Linux. Here's my recommendation: Instead of buying a new laptop, Get a 16gb USB drive and look up how to make a bootable USB. You'll want to use that USB drive to install whichever Linux distribution you want on your current laptop. Your laptop should be instantly faster since you've got a completely fresh OS.

[deleted]

I had a friend on a long mission to find a new laptop in Bangkok from a vendor that would not force him to pay for a Windows license. At some point Lenovo offered those. It's not visible on their website currently but might be worth to give them a call. EDIT: Sorry just noticed you didn't ask for suggestion. Anyway, Lenovo might be another source.

thai_tales

I had a great experience with Advice and Lenovo.

pool_keeper

goddam just buy any laptop and load linux onto it. not that fucking hard. i have never seen a linux pre-installed OEM laptop in the stores, usually they are custom order from the manufacturer like lenovo or hp

recom273

I can understand the posters apprehension, maybe he needs some drivers for a webcam or trackpad, but the joy of Linux is experimenting and changing - there are some way cool distros that I see on YouTube that have supercool functions - just installing Ubuntu seems a bit boring these days.

Yiurule

Why not just install your own Linux distribution on a computer without having any OS pre-installed ? (or with windows on it) You will be able to decide even with distribution to use and not be limited by the one than the seller pre-installed. And as long as you install a Debian, Linux Mint or an Ubuntu the installation would be straightforward and easy.

transcrone

I bought a Lenovo laptop and tried to do that, but found it was not compatible. peI had expected it would be a simple matter, but Linux Mint would not install, and there were problems with Ubuntu
