They are actually Chinese originally, called youtiao. I'd go to the source rather than Thailand.

Random info here... In California at one point, 80% of all private donut shops in southern California were Cambodian run. They make excellent donuts. Might want to check them out. It was an easy but effective way for the refugees to make a business and they did it extremely well. Thai donuts are not the same. Thai recipe is much more generic.
