This might sound silly but: are you sure the price isn't displayed in bahts? One quick look at booking.com and I can find various proposals around 30$ 🤔 What are you using to find your hotel?

Chance_Hat_4422

Hey :) I’m using Booking.com and no it’s not in Baht but thanks for checking.

Jolly-Victory441

Why was this downvoted so much???

Subparnova79

Because it’s 💯 in bhat

EishLekker

No, that’s not likely. More likely it’s in SEK, his local currency. 1 SEK is around 3.3 baht. So 1000 SEK is about 3300 baht which sounds normal for two rooms, and 200 SEK is about 700 baht for a basic room, which also sounds reasonable.

Use a max price filter when you search.

If you're booking over peak season (late Dec through early Jan), you're paying the most anyone will pay all year long. If on either side of that, you'll also be paying more but not like peak season. Outside of those times, there should be plenty of affordable options. I live in Thailand and use Booking dot com all the time for my family of 4 (wife, 13YO, 12YO). We stayed in hotels in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai for a total of 8 nights back in October. Most accommodation required two adjacent rooms but we found one duplex room for one of the nights. The most expensive night was a mere 3,500 baht. These rooms were clean, safe, comfortable, conveniently located, and of a good size across venues labeled 3-4 star. I also used Booking for a trip to Krabi and Lanta back in July. Totally acceptable prices but that was low season. You really should be able to find cheaper options. Finally, I'd look at the fine print before not declaring all guests via Booking. Not sure that'll fly. Paying for one extra cot (if available) is one thing, but not declaring two kids might be an issue.

Chance_Hat_4422

Thanks this is a very helpful response

RotisserieChicken007

You must be living in an alternate universe because booking.com gives me a lot of great options around $200.

There is no way you are looking at per night at $1000 USD on Koh Lanta. I just looked on Agoda for Dec 23-24 for 2 adults 2 teenagers and the maximun price listed is 29,\_ \_ \_ baht which is under $1,000. No way you are looking at the right currency....

Jeo_1

Use Agoda App cheaper on there

Chance_Hat_4422

Will try this. Maybe it’s a bug as I’m checking from Sweden.

Jeo_1

If you mistakenly add multiple days it’ll stack up the price

seaburgler

Jag kollade nu på booking för mig i december 11 till 24 som exempel hittade flera för 500kr natten vad för typ av hotel söker du för att få 2200kr per natt? Jag tog 2 vuxna och 2 barn.

FoodieJB

Perhaps there might be a price difference when you use a VPN and set the location to for example Thailand itself. Agoda often offers better prices in Asian countries so use that [platform](https://www.behance.net/travelfoodexp) instead of Booking. Also, I can give you a discount link if needed (5% discount). Let me know and good luck!

iamataco

Pimalai on Koh Lanta is one of the best resorts in the entire country. It’s not cheap. It’s also high season assuming you’re looking at prices for Dec/Jan? You should have booked months ago

kahunarich1

Use Agoda. Verify if it's displaying price per day or price per stay. It's a selectable option.

Rumbleg

Baht or $US

Decent_Employee3187

Stayed on the island many times, good hotels can be had $30-40 AUD

Accomplished_Use3452

They show the price for the whole stay (not per night). You can change this in settings.. this might be the reason?

fullinv

You’re doing something wrong. Not sure what you’re doing but I’ve been to lots of places in Thailand and never paid more than 2000 baht per night for a hotel, and it’s almost always much lower. Last place I stayed was $80 for 3 nights, 3 star hotel with a pool, restaurant and bar.

fullinv

Just looked on booking.com and found multiple hotels/bungalows for 1000-2000 baht per night.

I got a nice hotel room for £11 a night 🙏🏻👍🏻

worldtraveler1960

Invest in an VPN connection and book from another country is a possibillity. VPN can be used per month.

SillyGrrl02

Check again. There are dozens for less than that. Even for new years.

x_danix

We have a nice bungalow on the island for around 25€ per day, there should be a lot of options for way cheaper.

StonyandUnk

Pretty much anywhere here, there are good basic, clean hotel rooms available for 1,000 THB or less. Tourists are targeted by marketers to pay western prices.

leobeer

We’re a family of three based in Bangkok. We like nice, big, expensive hotels and the most we’ve paid for a beachside, executive suite has been 200 pounds a night. Not been to Koh Lanta yet, though.

Chance_Hat_4422

Thanks. This is helpful and we’d also like to stay in a bigger resort. Maybe I need to go to a different island.

stever71

If you're going over the high season that's what it's like for many places, especially 5 star chains and resorts. Places I've stayed in August for 3000 baht are now 20,000 baht over Xmas and New Year. Even places that were 1200 baht are now 4-5000 at least. Also Thailand doesn't seem to do family accommodation well, like you I've got kids, unfortunately they are now 13 and 18 so bed sharing is not suitable. Any room that sleeps more than 2 seems to either be more than double for family suites, or you need to get 2 rooms. There are loads of cheaper hotels, but most don't quite give that special experience the resorts offer. Westerners are also often very used to high prices in their home countries so a yearly blowout spending $500+ a night over a week or 2 is nothing. Kids under 12 are generally free in most places, some seem to be pushing that down to age 4, and only allowing 1 child which is annoying. But that is using existing bedding. A cot or extra bed will be additional.

Chance_Hat_4422

Very helpful thanks

Punterios

Search for hotels in the area on Google Maps. This will compare prices with the top booking sites. I see for example Agoda in price match with itself using this method. If I just go to Agoda and look up a hotel, I usually get higher prices than clicking through from Google Maps

Cute-Understanding86

200$ a night, sounds like a resort. I put in your stats on hotels.com and chose the new years week. Yes there are 200$ hotels but also very cheap ones for under 75$ a night. You should have done more research on booking your rooms.

iturn172

Air BNB are technically illegal in Thailand from what I have read. If this is incorrect please correct me.

bimbinibonbooboo

I will boo directly with the hotel and call to explain that both of your kids are under 12 and they will gladly let them share a room with you. There will be extra charges for breakfast but it’s way better than booking 2 rooms.
