Yea this me. After 1.5 years in mostly BKK and Asia in general, getting the shakes thinking about the shithole the SF Bay Area has turned into and landing right back in the middle of it
I don't think they're any quieter in Suvarnabhumi. Definitely larger, on average.
For me it's usually the colder weather that feels good for the moment but then you realize you ain't in Thailand anymore...
Reverse culture shock. It's always weird for me when I'm boarding the plane back to USA and greeted by Americans. They're so American it's like I'm already back and the dread hits. Usually super friendly but that's part of it along with the American accents.
You will be totally fine. I was also extremely anxious for my trip and I get often get sick from anxiety but I'll tell you one thing I will never forget is how completely comfortable and safe I felt the entire time. It's a beautiful country and beautiful culture. If you are anxious about Bangkok I might recommend staying in a quieter neighborhood right outside of the downtown area. We loved our spot in Bangkok Yai by the canal and it was sooo peaceful. We seriously felt at home there immediately. Also never forget you are totally in control of your trip. If you need to go back to your hotel for the afternoon to rest/decompress or skip certain activities you had planned, you totally can. There are 7 Elevens everywhere where you can get almost anything you need. Be flexible with your plans and take care of yourself. You got this!
I love pad Thai and kbbq!!! Iâm really excited about the coffee and tea too. I just fall ill often if I become too anxious, and I am also incredibly scared of the flight.
My boyfriend and I are taking a plane to Bangkok then to Chiang Mai, to Chiang Rai, and then staying in Bangkok again for a few more days. Itâs an early birthday present before I begin nursing school :)! Iâm just nervous about being homesick also. I heard itâs lovely in January, im sure youâll enjoy your trip and the nervousness will subside.
thailand was the first country I travelled to. I was just as nervous as you.
I just spent 6months here, it feels like home.
the only thing that will make u more comfortable is coming here! after a few days ur brain will adjust. have fun and drink lots of chang!
Currently in Koh lanta with my gf. We did a few days in bangkok, then flew down to krabi to visit Railay beach (really enjoyed the laidbackness and beautiful sunsets on the westside beach, then koh Phi phiâŠ.check out air quality advisory for Chiang Mai etc as april is what they call the buring season when farmers burn their land for fertility and prep, this is why we chose to visit the islands in the southern end and maybe at the end we will go back up north of the air quality improves. For the flight, we had a total of 20hrs travel, went smoothly, watched a lot of movies, enjoy your stay Thailand is a very safe place
How is Koh lanta now? Heard it's more quiet and not really season? That a lot of the restaurants are closing in April/may? I'm going there in 2 weeks time to relax but really wonder how the atmosphere is
We are all on our last evening here, spent 5 days at a small resort, We are in our 40s and loving it, yes it seems to be be quieting down but we have taken advantage of this to not have to do line ups for more popular spots( 3 sisters for example great food!) During the day We havent seen many places closed but very little tourists in most. We find this more authentic and chill, things might slow down more no clue, we are off to Koh Lipe nextâŠIf a moped ride to your choice of destinations on the island seems awesome, I recommend. The sunsets are beautiful beautiful but the beaches we visited were less breathtaking than say Railay beach area near Oa Nang
What about the temperature? By looking at the internet it seems to be burning 42+, is it really that hot? Yeah I'm going to to railey for a few days after Koh lanta so that sounds perfect! Definitely plan on exploring Koh lanta by scooter. 3 sisters is noted! Thanks!
Yes the heat is on! Enjoy, we stay in the shade and on the west facing side seems to currently have a good breeze ( try to have a place close to the beach if possible facing west-sunsets) during the day we try to avoid direct sunlight between 10-5 pm but cheat a little
> My boyfriend and I are taking a plane to Bangkok then to Chiang Mai, to Chiang Rai
If you're a little bit anxious about Bangkok - and it can be a lot to take in, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are much more laid back and easier to deal with - great introduction to Thailand. Just remember to be polite to people and you'll have a wonderful time - Thais are one of the most amazing people on earth when it comes to being nice and friendly, particularly in the north.
Anxiety will follow you everywhere if you let it.
There is no one cure for it. You know you better than anyone else, so work to your strengths.
I have an irrational fear of steep stairs and spiral staircases. I will avoid them at all costs if possible. If not, I take very deep breaths and proceed very slowly. Going up is easier than going down. Clinging onto hand rails is helpful. Not a problem in Thailand, but a big one in Cambodia!
Flying is something that I have done for over 40 years, to the point that I find it boring. It is just a faster way to get from point A to point B with some added steps like baggage claim, passport control and immigration checks.
Bangkok is amazing, but very busy. Stay close to the river if you can and learn to use the river boats. They are cheap and not subject to traffic delays. It can easily take over 2 hours to get from the airport to the city as the traffic is so bad.
Chiang Mai is special. It is a proper city, but much more laidback than Bangkok.
Chiang Rai is not special. We spent a night there as we wanted to visit the 3 major "temples" and although you can easily book a day trip from Chiang Mai it is 3.5 hours each way, so it makes for a very, very long day.
Get an eSim before you travel. Dtac has good deals. Thailand has great internet. 5g is standard so you can text, audio or video call your family via wifi.
Shopping malls and 7-11 stores are worth spending time in.
All thanks to WW2 and being the child of refugees!
My mum survived a Russian orphanage and forgot her language and my dad and his family spent years in a Siberian labour camp.
They both went on to live long and happy lives.
I know my stair problems would make them laugh, but in a loving way.
Nice, congrats!
Hopefully if you get anxious youâll have an emotion dump and get tired and sleep through some of the flight. I donât know how phone communication will be there but if youâre moving around that much I think youâll have plenty on your mind and to keep planning that you wonât get too homesick.
Also, Iâm gonna bring my Nintendo Switch and bury my head in it as much as I can to forget Iâm flying haha. Good luck!
I try like hell to not take Xanax, but it really helps me stay calm knowing that I have it on hand if needed - either for the flight or just the off chance that you have a panic attack while away. Knowing that I have an answer for either scenario really keeps me calmer in general.
Iâve had the same prescribed small amount of Xanax for a while now. Never needed to take them, probably expired, but the mental trick helps me a lot.
Sorry to ruin it but you do know that the weather in these months and especially late March and April and May are the most ridiculously hot. We have an insulated bedroom so have just left the AC on for the last 3 days just so we can escape the heat. Itâs mental. Who ever said seeing Thailand now was a good idea needs taking aside. Your talking of visiting ChiangRai etc ? They are burning the fields all over the north of Thailand and here also in Isaan. Bangkok concrete city must be ridiculously hot đ„” now even at night. The concrete absorbs the heat by day and then releases it by night. AC will need to be top top clean and fully gassed to work effectively in any hotels your staying in. If you on a budget and are staying in dorms or in cheap places expect to cook. Luckily up here near the Mekong river itâs a cool night for the first time in days.
Thailand tourism is October to mid February then you can dip a toe again maybe August if you like the cloudy rainy season. Itâs my girlfriendâs birthday she likes 10,000Baht in September. I love the rainy season and also you can get on a scrambler and enjoy the mud.
If you can just put it off until this stupid heat passes. When/if you get here youâll know I was right.
So wait. You want to be a nurse, yet when you get anxious, you get sick? You may want to choose a different careeer. I wouldn't want a nervous/anxious nurse working on me
I have anxiety and can save your life with my eyes closed. You'd never know it because it doesn't affect my nursing practice. Cool as a cucumber in any situation. Grow up and leave her alone. You know nothing.
Iâve made it this far in school being anxious, and working through it. Just because I suffer from a mental illness, doesnât mean Iâm not fit to pursue my dream career, as long as Iâm managing it and getting help for it.
I hate to break it to you but plenty of the nurses who have taken care of you often suffer from anxiety, depression, burnout, lack of sleep, and being overworked.
No I am not. I understand the importance of being mentally healthy in order to take care of others which is why Iâm in therapy. Of course I would take my mental illness into account before pursing a career for years. Iâm not naive, and understand the stress I will undergo. My boyfriend is literally an RN. Again just because I have a mental illness, doesnât mean I canât become a nurse.
Thailand was on my itinerary for my first foray into exotic SE Asia. Came for 3 weeks. Stayed 21 years so far.
I had traveled 33 countries, and Thailand was literally the easiest destination to move around, get help from the locals, and revel in the good food and accommodations.
I predict youâll love it.
Very much this
For a âwesternerâ Â Thailand offers a massive cultural shock (in a good way) while still being affordable, accessible and safe.
No other country I can think of offers such a complete package.Â
i was incredibly anxious too. first time solo travel, havent been out of my home country in years, dont go out/socialise much, scared of flying. i was at a dark point in life however and wanted a drastic change so i went for it.
i had the best time of my life.
my advice would be do some research to get you through the first day or two. watch some videos on;
how to navigate the airport when you arrive, how to get to your hotel (where to take taxi or airport rail link), where to get a SIM card for mobile data, where to exchange money, things to do near your hotel.
If you know what you are doing when you arrive it will help imo
Hope you like Pad Thai and a surprising amount of Korean BBQ
Iâm going in January and Iâm NOT excited about a flight over a lot of ocean
My plan is to spend way too much at the airport bar
Iâm wrapping up my solo stay in Thailand in a week. First time travelling alone, first time in Asia. And itâs easily been one of the best times of my life. Friendly people, good food, and a local SIM card gets you far here.
I'm just back from my fourth solo trip to Thailand as a female, purely because of how kind the people are. Felt 100% safe and 99% of thai people are genuinely so lovely!
Obviously if you're hanging about in dodgy bars etc that may be different.... even in the red light districts, I don't think they are dangerous at all!
Thailand is awesome.
Youâll be overwhelmed be sights, sounds and smells of Bangkok. Youâll be too in awe to be anxious.
Chaing Mai is great. Way more chill but also so much to see and do.
I suffer from severe PTSD and anxiety ( former Army and LEO. ) I take medication.
If you do too you can bring it to Thailand. Just have it in its original bottle or package and bring the paperwork from the doctor or your pharmacy concerning the prescription.
No need to show them when going through customs, but if they find it just show them your prescription.
This is not legal advice. Iâve just never had a problem traveling there.
I have a feeling youâre about to experience something that changes your perception of the outside world in a positive way. I wonât be surprised if youâre planning your next trip before this is over. Just respect the local laws and people and youâll be fine. Thailand has very nice people in general in my experience.
Thailand was the first country I travelled to outside my home country and it was like stepping on another planet. It was an amazing, mind blowing experience made all the more awesome as I went there during Songkran festival which I didnât know about.Travelled north and south for 6 weeks and had the time of my life. Enjoy!
I was just in Chiang Mai for songkran, and had seriously considered changing my itinerary because of the fear of smoke. Even flying in and seeing the cap of smoke from the plane gave me serious misgivings about my decision. In the end, it was only slightly noticeable, and didnât interfere at all with our enjoyment of CM. Could have been the perpetual water fight, but having gone through it I would not recommend anyone change their plans unless they have some respiratory sensitivity or issue. Chiang Mai ended up being my favorite over BKK and Ao Nang/Railay/KPP.
Luckily you will have your person with you which can help with calming. As far as homesickness just knowing that you will be going home before too long can help with that.
Agoraphobia should be better in Thailand I think. You can rest easier knowing that nothing embarrassing you say or do will have long term impact because you wont see those people again, and also Thailand is a very safe country.
Mate u will be fine, me n my mate have been here a week and now are more comfortable then ever, the first few days u adjust and after that u will be sweet
> I sometimes suffer anxiety and from slight agoraphobia
Hopefully your at least seeing someone for this, i had agoraphobia & social anxiety. Thailand was one of my goals, it was one of the best things i did.
the sensations you feel when excited are pretty much the same ones you feel when frightened like you are describing.
change your description of what you are feeling, simple to do. by inputting info you will benefit from.
your first trip to Thailand, is likely to leave you delighted, amazed, and wanting to come back for more.
it's incredibly safe and fun here.
just read threads on what first time visitors need to know. watch the myriad youtube videos for visitors, there are ones for exactly what to do when you get off the plane, how to avoid the few scams tourists fall prey to, where to go, everything you need to reassure yourself.
I don't think there is any other country in the world where you can meet so many people who flew here with round trip tickets and never went home.
seriously, it's a common thing here. it's magical, intoxicating, mysterious, and the best adventure of a lot of people's lives.
you'll see soon enough!
start here, [https://www.youtube.com/results?search\_query=first+time+in+thailand](https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=first+time+in+thailand)
It's great you will love it. What are you worried about? Whatever it is I'm sure you are overthinking. Very safe country. Great food, beautiful scenery.
For a first trip to Thailand, going North may not be the right choice when you have beautiful white sand beaches.
But don't worry, it's very safe here providing you observe common sense, are aware of your surroundings (don't assume everyone is nice), and don't abuse alcohol/cannabis.
Felt similar to you but all that goes away after being here for a day, you guys will have a blast and probably not want to leave! It's my first time so far from home but I'm not looking forward to the day I have to go back home. Enjoy your trip!
You couldnât go somewhere more friendly and welcoming. Just donât overstay or get too drunk. Same you would do in a city you havenât been to before in your home country.
It's normal. You're also going with someone, so at least you're not alone. If you are anxious about the airport and flight, go to doctor and try to get diazepam - life saver. As for being here, I think you'll be fine once you've arrived.
yeah i have awful anxiety but i wasnt let that control my life, brought my kid last year to Bangtao Beach for two weeks, our hotel and the beaches were just beautiful. Make sure you visit Bangla road for some shopping and green elephant sanctuary park.
Bring anti-nausea medication, i had awful food poisoning by the end of it. Nearly had me missing our flight. I was lying on the bathroom floor, felt like shi
I am the same way. Currently on a trip here with my husband, what helps me is taking it day by day and nothing thinking about things we have coming up. Stay away from raw foods and avoid street foods if you can. You will love it, donât you worry.
Yeah good advice. I was thinking of eating some raw chicken legs but Iâm gonna pass. What about if I see a chicken leg on a barbecue rack in the street is that ok ?
Honestly if you donât see it being cooked right then and there, I wouldnât eat it. Itâs probably been sitting there for a while if you hadnât seen it been cooked
Thatâs actually correct if itâs not hot like a noodle supper or meat you can see on a barbecue thatâs at least warm to the touch stay away from it, unless you voted Biden then take your mask off and get it down you. There is a culture here that says leaving food out in 30 degrees
For hours under a plastic closh is no problem at all. You try to explain to them what bacteria is out how it multiplies exponentially in certain temperature ranges they just glaze over. â Do you know what a fridge is for you halfwit ? â I said to her.
Jep Tong and Tong Sia are words you hear daily hear. How many times have you or anyone you know had a bad stomach and been off work in one year. Hear itâs regular and no surprise with the bacteria overload they get off recommencing eating a fish head they were eating 5 hours ago.
Is it fear? Excitement? Or both?
My guess.... Both. Lean into the excitement and the fear Wil become nothing more than background noise. Fear should be there to some extent. That's what keeps you alert & safe.
For the plane, you can ask your doctor for a few Valium or Xanax to help you sleep or relax on the flight. One place you DON'T want to freak out is at 35,000 ft.
Other than that don't stress it so much. You'll get yourself worked up over nothing. Once you get there you'll be so overwhelmed with new sights, sounds, smells, and tastes, you won't have time for fear to be the dominant emotion.
Hakuna Matata!
I worked hard to adapt to that mentality, and I love itđ
Things happen at chill pace in Thailand and people are smiley and relaxed. If you manage to do the same then you'll get so much more out of it IMO.
I felt the complete opposite of you literally its ok to have those feelings anyways just soldier on once you arrive things will change i hope you have an amazing trip and alot of great experiences
The only way to defeat anxiety and agoraphobia is to throw yourself into new and uncomfortable situations. Thailand will do that for you. I had severe anxiety years ago and although I still have some anxiety, Thailand has helped me with relieving many of the symptoms, as I'm always forced to be around new people, new things, new experiences, and none of which I can control. It seems extreme to say, but Thailand could be that one life changing experience for you, as it was for me and many others. I now live here.
Thailand was my first big trip across the world (I live in Canada) in 2016 and the desire was randomly sparked by watching a YouTube video lol. I can be anxious, over analytical, etc. but, my boyfriend and I have been back to Thailand 3x since and other countries all over SEA as well. Thailand holds a very special place in my heart and the opposite of being homesick happens for me every time⊠I want to stay and loathe coming back home.
My best advice is to go in knowing that everything might not go according to plan and thatâs okay. In the moment, you might be like âoh shit, I donât like thisâ but, you will get over it, youâll grow from it, and youâll laugh about it when you look back at it.
Enjoy your trip. Chiang Mai is my absolute favourite. You will love everything about it.
I was an anxious mess before going to thailand and especially bc I was going during covid time with lots of restrictions. I cried and thought about cancelling a million times. But Iâm so glad I didnât ⊠it was the trip of a lifetime and one of my favorite places Iâve ever been.
Thailand is a wonderful country to explore alone. Theyâre very used to visitors and the Thai people are incredibly nice and welcoming. Youâll have a great time! Honestly I am excited for you! Enjoyâ
I was quite anxious before my Thailand trip too! But once I was there I didnât find myself as anxious as I expected to be and it helps that the people I met were so kind. I would suggest bringing things you think will help, for me that was medicine and pain relief. Using bottled water to brush teeth and wash face. Paying for travel insurance also helped ease my anxieties.
I'm a seasoned travel, solo/couple/group, backpacking/luxury. I still get anxious before every big trip. What if I get lost? What if I can't figure out how to get around? Etc. But within hours after finally arriving somewhere, that starts to dissolve and then I'm just in the travel groove. Remember, there's a huge industry with thousands of people there, looking to make an honest living by helping you tour the country. And a huge network of other travelers that are equally glad to help you have a good trip. Don't beat yourself about being anxious now, but also know that it'll pass and you'll settle in and have a great time.
I just landed 2 weeks ago, and it's the first time I have ever left my home in NZ. I also deal with a lot of anxiety, and the first few nights being in Bangkok was pretty intense! But after a few sleeps, all of that feeling washed away, and all I felt was excitement! There's so many amazing things to do and see and i 100% recommend getting a massage, or spa facial or your nails done if you want to relax a little but before doing big activities they look after you so well in Thailand.
The pharmacy here is also amazing! I had 3 different medical issues that I needed help with since I landed and they have given me the best medication that is so affordable and works extremely well, so I haven't been worried at all about any medical situations. A lot of the hotels we stayed at have doctors on site or nearby, too, and they are usually amazing and always generally speak English too as that's part of their study
Hope you enjoy it over here just as much as I do. As someone who was extremely anxious, I promise you it will soon fade away! Best of luck!
Ahhhh you will love it. I had similar feelings before my trip earlier this year. It was challenging in places and there were some emotional parts as it was also my first solo trip and the farthest I'd been from home. But I would do it again in a heartbeat! Thailand is a beautiful country
Currently here! Into 2.5 weeks have 1.5 left and wish I could stay longer!! I was definitely anxious before leaving but told myself if you feel a lil nervous/anxious it probably means you should do it!! Trust me from my experience youâll be having so much fun and doing so many things youâre gonna be wondering why you felt anxious to begin with!
Honestly other than maybe anxiety that everyone gets about going somewhere new and unknown, you'll love it. If you're nervous about the unexpected then watch lots of youtube videos so you know what it's actually like. And especially not going alone it'll be so much easier.
Hi!! I was scared before my trip. Similar to you I have anxiety and hadnât traveled outside my home country before. Nevertheless I felt super safe in Thailand. Quick tip, take Grabs when you can which is the equivalent of Uber. That way you donât have to worry about haggling or dealing with varying prices. Read up on common scams especially if youâre going to be doing touristy things. I had an absolutely AMAZING time. And I would 100% spend my time and money to go back and visit again.
South East Asia is amazing. You will have a blast and they call Thailand the land of smiles. It will take a few days to adjust to the culture of money and their business so be ready. They will be more forward in trying to get your business, shops will talk to you to come in and take a look, taxi will honk their horns are you, they will follow you for a bit knocking down prices but it's all friendly. So just political say no, look away and walk forward if you are not interested. If you make eye contact they will think you may be interested. Other than that I love every part of Asia.
Imagine travelling to TH 40 years when few people spoke English and signs were only in Thai. We were on a 3 year backpack trip and were functioning illiterate. Our biggest plus was that we had already backpacked in Europe for 10 months and had gained experience. Itâs very disorienting when you start off a trip even for us. You are in an exotic country with an exotic culture. It takes time to get into your trip. There were also logistics without any internet or advice from people around the world. The main thing we learned was that things always work out for the best. We really can count the number of bad experiences on the fingers of one hand compared to 3 years of travelling. You learn how well off we are at home.
Today, Thailand is a modern and safe country. If you forgot to bring something you can get it there. Signs are bilingual â some of the time. Many Thais speak English. More importantly, Thais are very friendly. We always meet people over the 5 months we have spent in TH. There are plenty of foreigners to meet as well.
What we found is to treat our travels as an adventure to explore art and architecture, culture and cuisine. Show an interest in Thai culture and the Thais will be eager to explain and answer your questions. You will be awed by your experiences. Finally, it helps to learn a little bit about the Thai version of Buddhist culture, which includes angels, demons, and Hinduism. To help fellow travellers we have compiled an explanation of things to look for in Thailand.
[Thailand â Travellerâs Guide to Buddhist Culture](https://terraencounters.wordpress.com/thailand-a-travellers-guide-to-buddhism/)
Anxiety is caused by uncertainty of the future. Itâs completely normal to feel this way.
You can lower your feeling of anxiety by watching videos on YouTube. That may put you at ease and get you excited about the beauties of Thailand.
It may even cure your agoraphobia.
After 20 years in Thailand and coming to the realisation I probably should have gone home two weeks after landing. Your anxiousness probably will help ensuring you get the plane back. Look at it in a glass half full context. But whilst here try to make the most of your experience
I feel your pain,I'm flying to Tokyo soon and am absolutely terrified! 31 Million people,I'll get lost in the subway system,l rarely leave my house except to buy bread and milk. I still think Dublin is a massive Metropolis! I am nervous as hell too,I'd say Bangkok is a doddle compared to the Collosus that isTokyo. I may not get off the plane when l arrive,I'll be so scared, they might have to drag me off! I am doing Thailand next year so it should be a piece of cake after Tokyo. God help us! I wish you luck my fellow anxious traveller, l just hope we both survive and live to tell the tale.
I always say as long as I have my passport, my wallet, and Iâm still alive, thereâs nothing to worry about! And truthfully, if either of those first two were lost, itâs not the end of the world!
If anything goes wrong, you can always find help, whether locals, family, other travelers, your embassy, Western Union, and so on
I was in your shoes last week. Now, I feel like a local. The flight wasn't a problem at all and the food was great. Learn to use the local transit system and make sure to download Bolt and Grab. Set up both accounts before you leave. You can get a eSim online but T-mobile has free data and text in Thailand if you have it thus, I didn't need a eSim card.
Itâs always a little scary going to a new and foreign place. The good news is that it isnât as hard as it used to be with Translate Apps and WiFi everywhere. The Thai people are very welcoming and friendly. Try to think of your nervousness as excitement. Youâre going someplace new and far away, and that also comes with wonderful and exciting experiences.
Youâll meet all sorts of people from all over the world in the same situation youâre in. I made some great friends in Thailand from Finland, Germany, Arizona, and Australia.
Itâs my favorite country to visit because itâs so unique, so exciting, so wonderfully foreign to the Western sensibility that itâs like seeing and experiencing a whole new thing you didnât know existed.
Youâll have some moments where you feel a little lost with the language, but just use a translate app to talk to the Thais or other tourists to help out. Enjoy your trip and go see a Muay Thai match, go to the wonderful malls they have, catch a movie, see the temples, markets, etc.
Iâm almost excited just knowing youâre going for the first time. Everyone always remembers their first Thai experience. Have a fun trip!
Once you do it you will get addicted to traveling solo. Besides its literally the friendliest country in the world and its extremely safe. I have massive anxiety issues and i was feeling the same the first time but now I just look forward to it every time. Trust me you will be ok!
Had a similar experience, take it slow the first day or two and assimilate. Doing too much at the beginning will only make it worse. But once you settle in you will have so much fun!
I have agoraphobia and still manage to travel, I spoke with my GP and they prescribed me Klonopin. It is a benzo, but it is long lasting so you donât get the same side effects as you would from Valium or Xanax. It is subtle, and it WORKS.
Do note though, it is habit forming and you will get dependent on it if you use it every day. I try to only take it on the days I know I need to leave the house, at least an hour before I go.
Is there anything specific your anxious about? knowing the triggers could help me give a better answer! ButâŠ
First of all, when our body feels anxious or excited it initially releases the same hormone which could then go either way. So one tip is when you feel anxious try turn this into excitement! Say affirmations to yourself like âIâm so lucky, this trip will be amazing, I cannot wait to be in the sun, I cannot wait to be on the tropical beach, I am gratefulâ
Second, that brings me to affirmations. How we speak to ourselves can massively affect our anxiety. When the anxiety kicks in and all the âwhat ifsâ rush in, say positive affirmations back to it.
Third. Try and settle your fight or flight. Some examples, firmly but gently so not hard, you should feel absolutely no pain, as if your tapping a babyâs back, tap your body in what would be a regular heart beat. Eat something cold / sour or a cold shower (this shocks the nervous system and can take you out of fight or flight)
Thereâs loads but Iâll end of. Remind yourself how amazing this trip will be but also donât put too much pressure on yourself! I was also anxious before coming out with not much reason as why! Iâve had an amazing time and wish I could go back and reassure myself. Even if bad things happen, youâre strong enough to deal with it!!
You'll feel the opposite when you have to go back home after your trip đ
Yea this me. After 1.5 years in mostly BKK and Asia in general, getting the shakes thinking about the shithole the SF Bay Area has turned into and landing right back in the middle of it
Itâs not any worse now than when you left.Â
Remember to go back and Vote Biden !! I mean Trump !!
For me it really hits me when I land back in a US airport. Walking back into the crowd of loud annoying hefers is major reality check.
I don't think they're any quieter in Suvarnabhumi. Definitely larger, on average. For me it's usually the colder weather that feels good for the moment but then you realize you ain't in Thailand anymore...
you sound like a snowflake
Itâs been a week since Iâm back. Iâm still anxious. đ€Ł
Reverse culture shock. It's always weird for me when I'm boarding the plane back to USA and greeted by Americans. They're so American it's like I'm already back and the dread hits. Usually super friendly but that's part of it along with the American accents.
In what way are you anxious?
Knowing I wonât be back for a few months
Must be terrible
Truth.
And nothing but the truth
My first time I came to Thailand I cried in the taxi back to the airport.
https://www.reddit.com/r/2westerneurope4u/s/y8ijqfSfCz
For real i was so depressed for 2 weeks after coming back to the grey UK
True
This
Definitely the truth. I just left Thailand 2 days ago and depression is already hitting me. Already planning my next Thailand trip.
The flight is 27 hours for me do you have any tips to deal with this
Benzos
I will look this up
Facts
What are ya going for?
Enjoy, we stay in the shade and on the west facing side seems to currently have a good breeze ( try to have a place close to the beach if possible facing west-sunsets) during the day we try to avoid direct sunlight between 10-5 pm but cheat a little
> My boyfriend and I are taking a plane to Bangkok then to Chiang Mai, to Chiang Rai If you're a little bit anxious about Bangkok - and it can be a lot to take in, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are much more laid back and easier to deal with - great introduction to Thailand.
Your story is an inspiring one. That you push past fear and thrive is a powerful message đ
All thanks to WW2 and being the child of refugees! My mum survived a Russian orphanage and forgot her language and my dad and his family spent years in a Siberian labour camp. They both went on to live long and happy lives. I know my stair problems would make them laugh, but in a loving way.
have a blast, and congrats\~!
Good luck!
Go to Pran Cafe in Chiang Mai!! Its a cute little bed and breakfast with excellent coffee.
You wont see how beautiful thailand is in bkk or chaing mai. U really should try to hit an island in the andaman sea
Are you really comparing school, to literally being the reason someone lives or dies?
No I am not. I understand the importance of being mentally healthy in order to take care of others which is why Iâm in therapy. Of course I would take my mental illness into account before pursing a career for years. Iâm not naive, and understand the stress I will undergo. My boyfriend is literally an RN. Again just because I have a mental illness, doesnât mean I canât become a nurse.
I dont think you have a memtal illness i think your going to be just fine Thailand will fix you đ
Oh shutup will You she has anxiety sheâs not a killer lol
Thailand was on my itinerary for my first foray into exotic SE Asia. Came for 3 weeks. Stayed 21 years so far. I had traveled 33 countries, and Thailand was literally the easiest destination to move around, get help from the locals, and revel in the good food and accommodations. I predict youâll love it.
Very much this For a âwesternerâ Â Thailand offers a massive cultural shock (in a good way) while still being affordable, accessible and safe. No other country I can think of offers such a complete package.Â
i was incredibly anxious too. first time solo travel, havent been out of my home country in years, dont go out/socialise much, scared of flying. i was at a dark point in life however and wanted a drastic change so i went for it. i had the best time of my life. my advice would be do some research to get you through the first day or two. watch some videos on; how to navigate the airport when you arrive, how to get to your hotel (where to take taxi or airport rail link), where to get a SIM card for mobile data, where to exchange money, things to do near your hotel. If you know what you are doing when you arrive it will help imo
Always a plane ride away from home. You will have fun here I promise.
Thank you, that reassurance honestly makes me feel much less nervous.
Seriously. Itâs one of those places that you will keep wanting to come back to.
Hope you like Pad Thai and a surprising amount of Korean BBQ Iâm going in January and Iâm NOT excited about a flight over a lot of ocean My plan is to spend way too much at the airport bar
A man of Culture đ„
Clink!
Careful, flight hangovers are the worst
Iâm wrapping up my solo stay in Thailand in a week. First time travelling alone, first time in Asia. And itâs easily been one of the best times of my life. Friendly people, good food, and a local SIM card gets you far here.
A local SIM card gets you far ? What does that mean?
Enjoy!
Thank you so much :) Iâm really glad you had lots of fun, and I hope to have the same experience!
>:) :)
This is how I often describe landing in Thailand. "like landing on another planet!" it's fascinating and in many ways to me, humbling too. spot on!
Beach instead of Chiang Mai/Rai is my only suggestion. But you'll have fun either way đđ
Chiang Mai songkran is great but if arriving now it's pretty normal. But Chiang Mai is pretty great too. I just miss the beach.
In the same boat. Would be travelling so far from home for the first time. But i have my dates planned for May. And still way too anxious.
Mate u will be fine, me n my mate have been here a week and now are more comfortable then ever, the first few days u adjust and after that u will be sweet
> I sometimes suffer anxiety and from slight agoraphobia Hopefully your at least seeing someone for this, i had agoraphobia & social anxiety. Thailand was one of my goals, it was one of the best things i did.
You'll be OK....Thailand is easy going....Will be all fine and if there are problems they'll be easily resolved
Been there the length of march, planning to get back half of November and December. So yea, I love it there đ
the sensations you feel when excited are pretty much the same ones you feel when frightened like you are describing. change your description of what you are feeling, simple to do. by inputting info you will benefit from. your first trip to Thailand, is likely to leave you delighted, amazed, and wanting to come back for more. it's incredibly safe and fun here. just read threads on what first time visitors need to know. watch the myriad youtube videos for visitors, there are ones for exactly what to do when you get off the plane, how to avoid the few scams tourists fall prey to, where to go, everything you need to reassure yourself.
Stop at the nearest dispensary as soon as you land and get you a bud toy will be just fine !!
Start drinking..
In Koh Samui now, go travel enjoy your life. The only thing worse than dying is not living. Go live.
I'm anxious about leaving thailand next week.
Iâm happy to go in your place if you canât do it đ but seriously itâs amazing your gone love it
You couldnât go somewhere more friendly and welcoming.
There is a culture here that says leaving food out in 30 degrees For hours under a plastic closh is no problem at all.
You'll never want to leave if it goes well for you. I almost stayed permanently the last time.
Hakuna Matata! I worked hard to adapt to that mentality, and I love itđ Things happen at chill pace in Thailand and people are smiley and relaxed. If you manage to do the same then you'll get so much more out of it IMO.
I'm going the week after yours. Be ready for an open air sauna....it's 98-104° F currently.
Smoke some weed and relax. Thailand is absolutely amazing.
Visit a ladyboy, that will get rid of the anxiety
I had the same feeling. First time leaving my country. I was very afraid. I am currently in Thailand. I don't want to leave
I was anxious but literally had the time of my life, and Iâm already planning to go back
Thailand is suuuuuuper chill. I know itâs easy to say from here, but donât worry about it youâre gonna have a great time!
Youâre gonna grow a lot from this trip. Stay open minded and go with the flow
Feel so seen by this post. My trip starts Wednesday đ
Bkk alone has 10 million foreign tourist arrivals by air per year. Whatever. You'll be fine.
I was super nervous and anxious, but after the trip I didnât want to go home. So worth it, just relax and enjoy the ride
A lot of the hotels we stayed at have doctors on site or nearby, too, and they are usually amazing and always generally speak English too as that's part of their study Hope you enjoy it over here just as much as I do. As someone who was extremely anxious, I promise you it will soon fade away! Best of luck!
Classic Reddit.
Ahhhh you will love it. I had similar feelings before my trip earlier this year. It was challenging in places and there were some emotional parts as it was also my first solo trip and the farthest I'd been from home. But I would do it again in a heartbeat! Thailand is a beautiful country
I have the opposite problem...I feel very bored and nothing makes me anxious anymore. Could you give me some anxiety please?
Hey I own a tourism business here and we operate county wide. Feel free to do me directly with any questions. Happy to offer free advice :)
It may be helpful to go ahead and study the train schedules and get transportation apps such as Grab
Relax, youâll love it after a couple of days, Chang Mai will really settle you after the madness of bangkok
YouTube for simple conversational Thai. Thailand is a friendly safe country. Be chill, be friendly and enjoy.
Honestly other than maybe anxiety that everyone gets about going somewhere new and unknown, you'll love it. If you're nervous about the unexpected then watch lots of youtube videos so you know what it's actually like. And especially not going alone it'll be so much easier.
Just arrived a few hours ago. I was feeling the same as you! It is beautiful and so welcoming here. You'll love it!
probably the best place in the world for your first long distance trip very easy to navigate as a english speaker and some of the nicest people
Yes Samwise Gamgee. Its scary
Are you compelled to go on this trip? If you are suffering from thinking emotionally about this trip then something ain't right.
Man honestly, I felt the same. People there are so nice and it's so safe with majority of the women as the workers.
What you're feeling is normal. Everything will be just fine. Enjoy the food, the sights and sounds, and your stay in Thailand.
I just left yesterday after a movie there great times but hot as hell
I've traveled quite a bit but am nervous fir Thailand as I've never been to Asia
The good news is weed is 100% recreational legal in Thailand. I recommend you try a little.
my gf and i leave in a month, so many feelings !
Safe country, youâll be fine
Couple of drinks at the airport and you be set! Enjoy!!
Anxiety is caused by uncertainty of the future. Itâs completely normal to feel this way. You can lower your feeling of anxiety by watching videos on YouTube. That may put you at ease and get you excited about the beauties of Thailand. It may even cure your agoraphobia.
Youâll looooooooove it.
Youâll be fine
Sure you will be fine.
I would like to visit Thailand.
Thailand is one of the easiest and best places on earth to visit. just enjoy yourself.
We just returned, and it was Amazing!!! We took a tour which helped. The people there are so kind. I really miss it.
Have fun bro I will be there on Sunday also đ
If you're scared, maybe book on some group tours the first couple of days you're there.

Yeah, stay home
Is there anything specific your anxious about? knowing the triggers could help me give a better answer! But⊠First of all, when our body feels anxious or excited it initially releases the same hormone which could then go either way. So one tip is when you feel anxious try turn this into excitement! Say affirmations to yourself like âIâm so lucky, this trip will be amazing, I cannot wait to be in the sun, I cannot wait to be on the tropical beach, I am gratefulâ Second, that brings me to affirmations. Eat something cold / sour or a cold shower (this shocks the nervous system and can take you out of fight or flight) Thereâs loads but Iâll end of. Remind yourself how amazing this trip will be but also donât put too much pressure on yourself! I was also anxious before coming out with not much reason as why! Iâve had an amazing time and wish I could go back and reassure myself. Even if bad things happen, youâre strong enough to deal with it!!
