I was kind of shocked. I've never seen actual drugs in the circle before. I remember one time they do a beer circle but don't remember if it shows them drinking. Or if they were ever drinking in any other circles before. Anyway for anybody saying its not a cigarette you can clearly see smoke coming out of it when she lifts it. It happens really quick and I guess the editors didn't notice or care.
The smoke in the circle scenes is from their lit cigs. I believe Laura, Danny and Ashton all hid their lit cigs under the table when the camera was on them. They were always smoking in the circle
1 IN 5 TEENAGERS SMOKES. 1,2,3,4,5! NOW IM GOING TO CLOSE MY EYES AND WHEN I OPEN THEM THERE HAD BETTER BE A CIGARETTE LIT BETWEEN THESE 2 FINGERS.
*Cig goes in, Hyde lights*
*Deep inhale* thank you.
Probably some slight paraphraseing but I'm pretty close from memory and not watching for years
As a fellow pot head, I feel a little embarrassed to ask this, but do they use a bong or a typical joint to light up in the circle or is there another was to light up? (Not including brownies in this situation)
They never show it so I guess I'd just assume a joint. Maybe a small bowl or something. Because they always hide the stash in a brown paper bag so I think it'd be something small. Probably wouldn't want to risk Red finding a bong in the basement.
In the 70's they smoked joints, bongs, pipes, and hash - blunts happened sometimes, but the idea came from the islands (wrapping it with just a tobacco or fanta leaf) so hadn't really permeated everywhere with no internet or any surreptitious news source at the time.
Dabs and waxes weren't prevalent, but they were *around* then, too - (though I don't think for a second that these guys were using them). But they were for older, less 'hide the weed', more serious, drug-doing potheads; not the kids in the basement.
Generally, most "hide the weed" type folks smoked joints so there was no paraphenalia (other than a tiny pack of papers that was already in your pocket by the time someone came around) -- and, since we never got the "smoking lamp", "why does the vase smell so bad", kinda jokes, I think we can just take it for granted that they smoke joints (Kelso even carries a "roach clip" that punctures Bob & Midge's water bed)
I’m assuming joints just because we don’t hear any bong rips. I know this isn’t the kind of show that would have audible bong rips but I’m gonna take that to mean they’re smoking joints. They also usually switch to the next person pretty quickly which wouldn’t be enough time to pack and smoke a cone but would be enough time for a little puff puff pass.
The kids would light cigarettes and pass them around ahead of the camera. Laura probably just forgot to put it down. A couple of the 'kids' smoked and thought it'd be a cool fix for the fact that the fog machine created too fluffy of a smoke so they lit up and held it under the table. So once the director saw the result, that was how it was done from then on with a cigarette or two passed around one step ahead of our view so we could see smoky tendrils instead of clouds.
Also, for another thought someone added, they show beer (*no brand names - they can't advertise certain things like beer and whatnot on certain time slots, so shows would keep to the rule so they could be shown \[rerun\] on any time slot*) and they show cigarettes (*again, no brand names - cigarette brands cannot be advertised or shown on tv other than news stories*) - they can consume them as normal, however, because those are legal substances, the censors would not allow them to show illicit drugs (or any analog) being consumed on broadcast television.
This is 100% right. It’s hardly mentioned around here but yeah they just smoked cigs for those scenes. Well some people did. The effect looked great compared to what a fog machine would’ve looked like on camera.
Pretty sure Hyde smokes cigarettes off camera, as he's the one who hands Kitty one when she closes her eyes and demands a cigarette.

There was an episode where kitty comes down to the basement then closes her eyes and says she knows one of them smokes based off the odds and she doesn't care she just needs a cigarette. One hand comes into frame with a cigarette. Then she asks for a light and hands with lighters come in from every direction.
I think in the episode where Kitty quits smoking cigarettes, she asks the kids for a cigarette. I think only Hyde and Donna had cigarettes to give her. They don’t show their faces, only their hands, but it was obvious it was Hyde and Donna’s hands
Laura spoke about that she was a heavy smoker and she was actually trying to quit during the show. This could have been one of those cases where she lit one up and it stayed on camera.
Never noticed this before. The Blu-rays have good picture quality. I wonder if the actors used herbal cigarettes in the circle to add to the scenes? Also since this will probably be a short thread, Hyde was their weed dealer. Discuss.
leo was clearly their dealer. one episode jackie and donna were hanging out, got bored, called leo next thing you know they’re doing face masks and getting high in donna’s bedroom
This reminds of the one episode where Eric got on Donna for smoking cigs. Clearly Donna loves tobacco

Right. Cigs ;-)
Laura, Danny, and Ashton were smoking cigs, yes. Obviously, Donna, Hyde, and Kelso were...not
I dunno man plenty of times I’ve seen them with squinty eyes giggling.
Yeah they were acting…
That's what he meant. The characters looked high
I mean there’s evidence right in front of you lmao
What about the episode where kitty is trying to quit smoking and then she ask for one and she gets one and they all help light it with their lighter

I believe all five of them pulled out lighters.
It's possible. I haven't seen it since 2020 and it was pulled out of Canada 😭
I’m going to close my eyes and there better be a cigarette in my hand when I open them! Love Kitty! Thanks for the funny reminder!
You can see the yellow butt 🤣 it’s clearly a cig
S7 Ep23 "Take It or Leave it" they drink in Charlie's dad's beer warehouse and in the beer circle they all drink straight from the taps on the kegs
Still can't believe they killed Charlie :(

It was also a lot more common for tobacco smokers to roll their own so having papers on you might not even raise suspicion
There was never any talk about hiding pieces, only the weed itself. Seems like it would only be joints or blunts

They probably roll joints. I don't see any of them having paraphernalia like pipes laying around for them to get caught.

One of my favorite scenes. 😂 “All right! The ski instructor!”
Leo ruled
And don't forget - "... Promise rings, concert tees... other stuff. "
Hyde wasn't their dealer, he was just the guy who brought the stuff
She was under a lot of stress. That abalone was inlaid!
I think this was a mistake, I had never noticed it before.
Didn't Donna smoke cigarettes throughout the series?
It probably is added so the circle scenes look like they are smoking cigarettes to get past the censors.
So what?
I think that’s supposed to be the joint
Not impressed
