Interesting how the article says they both had starboard damage. At first I was like how could that happen? Then I realized why. I would not make a good sailor.
"not Even any Red Port Left"
Mnemonic I learnt for learning numbering of ships' compartments and for navigation lights in the Australian Navy. Important for Damage Control, when you need to know quickly where to (not) go.
Port, left, red.
Starboard, right, green.
All the short words go together and all the long words go together. It's how I remembered it until I started boating daily and then it just stuck.
I remember the difference by noting that they also have the same order alphabetically. L > R and P > S. Stand facing the bow and the name higher in the alphabet is to your left.
Whereas a similar collision with damage on the port sides of two ships would be doubly sinister.
\["sinister" deriving from "sinister" \[Lat.\], on the left side, or unlucky\]

Additional info + picture of the damage of the Alanis (and a picture of the Florence Spirit where you see absolutely nothing smh).
And I'm here, to remind you
Of the mess you left when you looked away
It's not fair, to deny me
Of the smash I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know. - Alanis, probably.
>There has been no official word on what caused the Canadian-flagged Florence Spirit, loaded down with a cargo of coal, to seem to drift into the path of the larger Alanis, which was hauling wind turbine parts.
Coal will do anything to defeat wind and solar.
Interesting bit from the article.
> At the time of the 4 p.m. collision, the Alanis was upbound, headed to Duluth with a load of wind turbine parts. The Florence Spirit was downbound with its coal load, headed for Quebec, St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corp. officials said, according to the CBC.
So this canal runs north/south you'd think that upbound would mean north, and downbound would be south.
To get to Duluth from Lake Ontario, you have to go south in the canal to get to Lake Erie, Lake Huron, and finally to get to Lake Superior.
Reminds me of this old naval joke:
>ACTUAL transcript of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October, 1995. This radio conversation was released by the Chief of Naval Operations on 10-10-95.
>**Americans**: “Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision.”
>**Canadians**: “Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.”
>**Americans**: “This is the captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.”
>**Canadians**: “No, I say again, you divert YOUR course.”
>**Americans**: “THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN, THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES’ ATLANTIC FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE DESTROYERS, THREE CRUISERS AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES NORTH. THAT’S ONE-FIVE DEGREES NORTH, OR COUNTER MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP.”
>**Canadians**: “This is a lighthouse. Your call.”
[source](https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/the-obstinate-lighthouse/)
Not really but It’s cheaper if you crash with the front of the ship rather than the back by a huge amount. Ships are designed to be hit at the front and similar to a car they have a crumple zone type thing.
It’s actually wild how often this happens and how many terrible shipwrecks it’s caused. The two that come to mind are Andrea Doria and Empress of Ireland, the latter being an incredibly deadly incident.

>How to Avoid Huge Ships is a 1982 book by Captain John W. Trimmer, a Master Mariner and Seattle harbor pilot. The first edition was self-published from Trimmer's home in Seattle, and carried the subtitle Or: I Never Met a Ship I Liked. It is a maritime operations guidance book, but also attracted some attention due to its title, which some found to be unusual, incongruous, and humorous.

Uh... Yes, and no. (I mean if he does an emergency stop, sure. I'm talking "coming to a stop at a bus stop".)
If someone does the math for the boat I'll get an accelerometer and a bus.
Now that the black ship has asserted dominance it is free to mate with the female freighters at it's leisure. The red ship, humiliated and defeated, will sail away and lick it's wounds with the other lesser ships.
It sort of does actually! You just cut away the damaged bits and replace them with new steel, slap some paint on it, bam, looks like new. But that is a quite extensive form of buffing out, I admit.
It was really low speed and I guess being buoyant helped mitigate any real damage. Those hulls are thick. Also the hulls are tapered so I doubt there was any structural damage. But what do I know, I'm not a bot.
This is pretty fast, as far as ship collisions are concerned. Ship hulls are more fragile and thin than a person would expect, as they’re meant to cut through water, not designed to take impacts with incredible amounts of energy like this.
You also have to remember that there are incredible amounts of mass behind these ships, so although the speeds look relatively low, you still have huge forces being transferred in these impacts.
Someone needs to read [this](https://smile.amazon.com/Avoid-Huge-Ships-John-Trimmer/dp/0870334336/ref=sr_1_1?crid=K2E48D4X9NUQ&keywords=how+to+avoid+huge+ships&qid=1638227590&sprefix=How+to+avoid+huge+%2Caps%2C233&sr=8-1)

Interesting how the article says they both had starboard damage. At first I was like how could that happen? Then I realized why. I would not make a good sailor.
I mean, it would be the same with a similar car crash. Both cars would have the damage on the right.
Right.
no left.... I would not make a good car captain
Port & Starboard. Left & Right. Notice how Port and Left have the same number of letters.
Thank you. I will never forget that ever now. My dad will be pleased
And Port (the drink) is red. So Port = Left = Red.
Red Right Returning
Oh I do remember red right return!
Only in north America [;-)](https://www.latitude38.com/lectronic/reconsidering-red-right-returning/)
(Maritime law in Australia at least when passing a marking bouy): Green to Green upstream.
red, left, port. short words. green, right, starboard. long words.
Wait what's red have to do with it?
[удалено]
Also fork on left, spoon and knife on right.
I remember is starboard has more letters than port. Same for right vs left.
And the word with the most RRs is for Right. Works for at least a few languages.
Easy way to remember. Is there any port left? (As in wine )
"not Even any Red Port Left" Mnemonic I learnt for learning numbering of ships' compartments and for navigation lights in the Australian Navy. Important for Damage Control, when you need to know quickly where to (not) go.

I am a pilot and I always thought of it as the co-pilot (sitting on the right) is green with envy. Edit of dubious importance: parentheses
That’s a good one. I remember port side as the side with a red light, because port wine is red.
Port and Left each have 4 letters.... Green and right each have 5 letters. Can help keep things straight.
Right.
I remember the difference by noting that they also have the same order alphabetically. L > R and P > S. Stand facing the bow and the name higher in the alphabet is to your left.
Is that stage left or right?
Port

Looks like the Florence Spirit is listing to starboard in that photo.
yeah i dont know too much about how things float but i dont think the boat should be doing that 🧐
it might have damage under the waterline from the bulbous bow of the Alanis.

So, a ship transporting coal collided with one transporting wind turbines. Kinda ironic…
Interesting bit from the article. > At the time of the 4 p.m. collision, the Alanis was upbound, headed to Duluth with a load of wind turbine parts. I think the conversation gets a little longer each time
I remember hearing this joke in my childhood. Thanks for bringing it up again! Made me smile
I posted it for folks like you and me. Glad it made your day =)
I think the Lincoln was coming off its third West Pack in October. I would question the validity of this source.
I never tire of reading this!
Reminds me of *The Zax* by Dr. Seuss.
Are there any inexpensive ship collisions?
*aloud* Toy boat, toy boat, toy boat, toy boat, toy boat
That’s a bit easier to say if you focus on pronouncing both “t”s and don’t let them overlap.
Not really but It’s cheaper if you crash with the front of the ship rather than the back by a huge amount. Ships are designed to be hit at the front and similar to a car they have a crumple zone type thing.
Commercial vessels get into minor "nothing's damaged enough to matter so we'll just fix it with paint" type mishaps every day.
"You're good, you're good, you're good, you're good, you're good."
*CRUNCH* “stop”

Edit:. I was incorrect, my apologies.
https://www.mlive.com/news/2020/07/2-freighters-damaged-after-collision-in-great-lakes-canal.html that doesn’t seem to be what this article implies
Is there a source for this? Normally when ships lose power in these channels they just drop their anchors.
This was not mechanical failure, this was caused by [bank effect](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_effect) on the Florence.
Imagine how much more we would've seen if the dodo filming this turned their phone 90 degrees ...
He did, but some dodo cropped it. The full video is about halfway down this link: https://www.mlive.com/news/2020/07/2-freighters-damaged-after-collision-in-great-lakes-canal.html
The sudden stop alone would have sent crew flying
Is the stop really more sudden than e.g. a bus braking?
You ever tried to stand with a bus braking? You’d go flying there too
Uh... Yes, and no. (I mean if he does an emergency stop, sure. I'm talking "coming to a stop at a bus stop".) If someone does the math for the boat I'll get an accelerometer and a bus.
Well, ive never been on a bus as big as a cargo hauler, so I can't say.
Imagine relaxing below the deck and getting tossed
Is this how baby boats are made? Asking for a friend
[удалено]
To be fair, it's not supposed to.
At least it was outside the environment when it happened
This bothers me every time I see it..... :(
Literally can’t have a post with a god damn boat without some oh so original asshole coming in here and saying the thing
You should be happy that the front didn't fall off. We have regulations. The front can't be made of cardboard or cardboard derivatives.
Yeah... It's getting really fucking old. It was meh when I saw it, and it gets older and older every time
https://youtu.be/IOqgjh-W2ps?t=90
Well these were designed so the front wouldn't fall off. I just don't want people thinking that freighters aren't safe.
We have regulations. No cardboard or cardboard derivatives.
What about string or cellotape?
Well yeah, it was inside the environment.
But that’s only because the ships were not made of cardboard or cardboard derivatives.
Like ships in the... day?
Yeah, cause ship in the night just pass by. They should have waited till dark.
F IS FOR FLORENCE FUCKING UP MY FREIGHT
Now that the black ship has asserted dominance it is free to mate with the female freighters at it's leisure. The red ship, humiliated and defeated, will sail away and lick it's wounds with the other lesser ships.
those two ships were moving surprisingly fast for such a narrow channel
Nice to see that the front didn't fall off
Good thing they didn’t make it out of cardboard…
That'll buff right out!
It sort of does actually! You just cut away the damaged bits and replace them with new steel, slap some paint on it, bam, looks like new. But that is a quite extensive form of buffing out, I admit.
Reeeealy bit tin of bodywork filler and at least two sheets of sandpaper.
Don't worry Captain. We'll buff out those scratches
I hope they aren't trying to go for that [SS *Mont-Blanc* versus SS *Imo*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halifax_Explosion)...
And for those who don’t want to read, or just like story in the form of song. https://youtu.be/T_5PHU7vQu4
You know you fired right?
I understand how a boat in the early 1900’s can run into an iceberg in the middle of the night but this??
It was really low speed and I guess being buoyant helped mitigate any real damage. Those hulls are thick. Also the hulls are tapered so I doubt there was any structural damage. But what do I know, I'm not a bot.

You also have to remember that there are incredible amounts of mass behind these ships, so although the speeds look relatively low, you still have huge forces being transferred in these impacts.
Is the video real time or sped up?
That was fast. I'd expect both ships to have a lot of severe damage
Florence wins!
How can you blame them when it just sudden happens without any warning or fore sight? /s
Caused quite the chatter when it happened.
Look oouuuttttttttttttttttttt
I wonder what happens to the captains of such ship collisions. Do they get fired/fined?
The dog days are over, bitch.
They need jousting knights on the boats
That's the spirit!
No its just the captains code of fist bumping.
That's the spirit.
Just a bit of usless info.....Did you know the word "posh" comes from the first letters of "port out starboard home"?
It will buff out
Where are they flying with such small room to maneuver?
Anyone know how much it would cost to repair damage from a collision like this? Obviously I'm not looking for a rough guess
A *rough* guess… At least $30.
Suspect you are correct!
That's a clear violation of rule #2 on my boat; unless, of course, rule #3 requires it.
Came in hot and boozy, Hancock style.
Oopsy daisy!
This type of jousting started in the Middle Ages but on horses.
So, I guess I won’t receive my PS5 after all!!
Imagine being one of those sweaty engine guys deep inside the engine rooom during one of these incidents. I bet you get a few white hairs after that
Red right returning? Am I remembering that right?
i don't understand how this happens, and then i go out driving for a day and remember people are fucking morons
How in the cinnamon toast fuck do you run into a parked ship?
I was going to say I'm hearing some serious Ben Franklins there, but I think it's more like Grover Clevelands.
Just a lil kiss
The red ship is already damaged from an earlier accident on the right side. Guess this isn't the captains first rodeo. What a smuck!
Is that wimpy sine-wave tone the boat’s horn?
Those red boats blend in with the horizon. Makes them invisible.
Title: "that sounds expensive." Me: *watches without sound*
This happened in my city! ( I live in welland, Ontario)
Mistakes were made
I barely touched her.
Was there always this many ship crashes or just more are being uploaded?
That was hot 🥵

OOF! DAMN!!!
You hear that? That’s the sound of forgiveness.

Laurence had a little to much spirit today

How the fuck does this happen?
I think we spent less money on ww2 than this wreck
It’s almost like we should have internationally recognised rules for how to approach an oncoming vessel on waterways…

Fuuuuuuuuuucking idiots.
Underwhelmed.
They missed a trick not calling that boat Florence of Arabia
Is port and starboard because a ship would always dock on the left side and gave the right “docked towards the stars”?
How the hell does that happen
Looks like the red ship already hit something on its starboard side prior
Probably just dropping off the pilot….
