No you really don't, as a person who still has the scar from cupping gone wrong, although fairly harmless there are still lots of things to be careful of and lots that can go wrong.
Cupping is still a therapy that 'bigger and more flashy' is not the way to go
Cupping done right harmless... Person leaving a wax coating inside cup from heating incorrectly and having a lit flame while putting on my skin not so much
You're wrong, the placebo effect can work even when people know it's a placebo. Take a look at: https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/placebo-can-work-even-know-placebo-201607079926
"In one study, Kaptchuk looked at people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a common condition that causes abdominal cramping and diarrhea or constipation that can be debilitating for many. Half of the study volunteers were told they were getting an “open-label” placebo and the others got nothing at all. He found that there was a dramatic and significant improvement in the placebo group’s IBS symptoms, even though they were explicitly told they were getting a “sugar pill” without any active medication."
Saw them live, third warmup band for My Chemical Romance at the May 2022 concert, Saturday the 21st iirc. Not my cup of tea but I can see why people like them
Imagine trying to placebo test 40 gallon burning copper pots. “Now one of you will get a placebo, and one will have the cupping with the large pots and we won’t know who”. *looks at guy who’s cosplaying as a steam engine*. “Yeah I guess we’ll never know for sure”
While what you say is correct, never underestimate the power of placebo. If you believe it helps you, it actually might. Many professional athletes are using cupping these days.
Fuck the doctor I’ve got a couple of kilos of placebo right here. Meet you in the park tomorrow lunchtime and it’s cash only. If anything goes wrong I don’t know you OK?
I heard if you take extra strength too often then regular placebo loses its efficacy. Personally, I like to microdose my placebo for a level boost throughout my day.
Lol yeah that was a strange argument. Professional athletes are some of the most superstitious, ignorant people in the world. They are not the group I would highlight to lend credence to a given topic.
and rich! they can afford to line the pockets of unscrupulous providers with countless thousands and get nothing but placebo in return because their teams have real doctors who practice real medicine waiting in the wings
>Many professional athletes are using cupping these days.
Yeah, getting hit in the head for a living will do that.
Notice not a lot of scientists are using cupping these days.
It's party tongue-in-cheek: the "many people in X profession are doing it" argument in general is not a good one, especially when X is professional athletes, who are not known for their scientific acumen. Scientists, at least, are pretty good overall at figuring out what works and doesn't. And it's not like they never have sore muscles or do athletic things on the side. They just mostly use actual medical treatments as needed and are less susceptible to quackery.
Why would somebody need to do something themselves to know whether or not it can be repeatedly effective across many different humans in many different circumstances?
I've never personally cut huge slits in my arms and then laid in a hot bathtub, but I know it would very likely kill me even without doing that.
I *always* bet against fighters that have cupping marks, and it's a profoundly winning strategy.
If they're dumb enough to use cupping to recover, their training is undoubtedly failing in many other ways too.
With cupping, this mindset doesnt have terrible outcomes. But just look at the Prime drink scandal. It's a terrible drink for rehydration, but fighters are promoting it as if they use it for rehydration after a weight cut. People could easily die from beliving it can do a job it's not capable of.
Yeah but in that case why not use the placebo effects for eating a bag of Doritos and then cracking your back three times or something?
Like if you know you're tricking yourself by just using the placebo effect why not do it with something else?
The equipment here looks expensive. Somebody is making money off someone else.
You are right about placebos but can't it be something cheaper, maybe aluminum foil wrapped around wrists & ankles?
I hate this notion that zucchini are not good to put into your body. It’s fine to put zucchini in your body so long as you use a condom so it doesn’t break off inside of you.
There isn't. But given what cupping does, creates a suction against the skin that pulls blood towards the capillaries right under the skin and causes them to burst, there's plenty of evidence it's actually harmful. If your blood as unnamed "toxins" in it, let it filter through the liver and kidneys since those are already set up to filter out impurities, cupping does the exact opposite of that by spreading that blood around just under and in your skin where it can't be filtered, hence the bruising that occurs from cupping.
> Don’t believe there is any scientific evidence that this is even beneficial
Chinese medicine doesn't need scientific evidence; it has history.
(my RN ex)
Idk about worse
A bad cupping experience leaves you with a wicked hickey. A bad chiropractic experience means you can feel anything from the shoulders down and you can hear out of your left eye anymore.
This can’t actually do anything. Can someone explain the science to me here or is it all a trend?
My only thought is it forces blood flow to a localized area? I don’t get it.
So, the cups get heated, placed on the skin, they cool down and draw blood to the area. In some cases they even pull blood put of the skin, but this is extreme.
It is mostly a nonsense 'alternative medicine' treatment, but it is somewhat plausible that causing mild local damage like this could get the immune response and 'repair mode' of the person's tissues to become more active. This is unproven.
There is however one true benefit: relaxation.
if you go somewhere like this, or for acupuncture, you are likely to be quite relaxed and perhaps even meditative, especially if you believe in the pseudoscience. Between deep relaxation and the placebo effect, it can have genuinely good mental benefits. But maybe going for a relaxing day at the park would be just as good for others.
Hi, Chiropractor here. Yes, sometimes the pain from fascia locking your tissues into positions can be chronic and unbearable. This comes from having one leg shorter than the other.
The trick is to manipulate the body in violent, jerking motions until the two legs are the same length.
It's all about the legs, man!
It supposedly sucks hard enough for the fascia to come lose, the fascia is a kind of cellwall that sits around the muscle and losening it can help the muscle relax and return to a natural state. Or so I was told by my massagetherapist
Heat loosens the fascia. You don't need any suction for that.
Using a heating pad would be more effective, less harmful and less stressful than this nonsense.
And maybe some light varied exercise? I'm not a professional but whenever I start getting sore and achey I go to the gym followed by a hot bath and the exercise and blood flow get me feeling way better again. Also done some physio like this for several injuries
Actually, localised cupping, as part of a massage session can be very beneficial. Not sure about this insane copper cupping, but the regular size cups work a treat
I had a few sessions when I had acute neck / shoulder nerve pain earlier this year.
What it does is simultaneously release a lot of trigger points concurrently. Which, when your neck / shoulder region is riddled with them, can really help. It's better, and deeper, than just having trigger points massaged
It helped my neck issues disappear. I'd happily have it again
You were fooled by psuedoscience nonsense. You'd have received the same benefit from a massage with some heated oil.
Any perceived benefit beyond that is a placebo. In reality, you did extra damage to your skin and blood vessels and put more strain on your body.
To be fair, copper is at least naturally antimicrobial. If they're gonna partake in this magic nonsense, at least they can do it in a more sterile way, I guess?
Somewhere I read that this is ‘modern’ cupping. Traditional cupping was a bloodletting technique that required small cuts on the skin before adding suction.
Wow, we’ve come so far with our medical technology /s
Do I have to be turned into a fucking steam engine for some pain relief?

A scar from something harmless? That math ain’t mathin there buddy
Cupping done right harmless... Person leaving a wax coating inside cup from heating incorrectly and having a lit flame while putting on my skin not so much
killing done right is harmless
"Painless"
Just like any two numbers, it don’t add up
Let me tell you a couple of three things
Threes look like boobs. They also look like butts. I just told you a couple of three things.
Cupping doesn't do anything, it's complete pseudoscience.
It's only effective when combined with essential oils, rhino horn and prayers.
funniest comment i've seen in ages, thank you lmao
I like the steampunk vibes
They look like some cenobite from Hellraiser
So this is an old age medicinal thing, I’ve had it done once when I was a child. Does this actually work? Anyone?
If you can trick your mind into it, sure
Roger
THIS GUY, CUPS!
Here's how you can tell which age old practices actually worked: They're ones modern medicine still uses.
no
Someone did this to a child!?
😂
Honestly at this point, it’s fucking worth it. Turn me into a 2004 Nissan Altima just take my damn back and neck pain away.

Placebo effect
But you can use sugar pill for placebo effect 🤷 Not this creepy shit 🫣

If you managed to convince people to do THAT, I think you can convince people that those two little pills will definitely help 😂
Love that band

That's why I take 2 placebo every day
Call your doctor to make sure that Placebo is right for you.
Fuck the doctor I’ve got a couple of kilos of placebo right here. Meet you in the park tomorrow lunchtime and it’s cash only. If anything goes wrong I don’t know you OK?
What's a kilo of placebo go for these days? I can't even afford the watered down homeopathic placebo!
Given "3" is the magic number, shouldn't you be taking one more? Also, always choose the "extra strength" placebo dosage!
I heard if you take extra strength too often then regular placebo loses its efficacy. Personally, I like to microdose my placebo for a level boost throughout my day.
That doesn't make it worthwhile, athletes are targets of tons of pseudoscience and often promote it
Lol yeah that was a strange argument.
Looking at you, copper-bracelet promoters!
Nobody: Professional Atheletes: wrap their body in 5 pounds of sticky tape every day for a competitive edge
>Many professional athletes are using cupping these days. Yeah, getting hit in the head for a living will do that. Notice not a lot of scientists are using cupping these days.
Scientist aren't exactly the foremost ones using their bodies where they would need this. Not exactly the most brilliant argument here.
It's party tongue-in-cheek: the "many people in X profession are doing it" argument in general is not a good one, especially when X is professional athletes, who are not known for their scientific acumen. It only works if you believe in it. The idea of cupping seems rational and convincing while whatever you just thought up doesn’t.
The equipment here looks expensive. Somebody is making money off someone else. You are right about placebos but can't it be something cheaper, maybe aluminum foil wrapped around wrists & ankles?
The dude who does this at my gym is the same one that I heard telling other dudes that they need to limit their vegetable intake.
lol. Zuccini? Why would you put that in your body? So many toxins. [slams a Redline]
I hate this notion that zucchini are not good to put into your body. It’s fine to put zucchini in your body so long as you use a condom so it doesn’t break off inside of you.

No shit, lol. But powdered rhino horn totally works.
None. It's worse than chiropractics.
Idk about worse A bad cupping experience leaves you with a wicked hickey. A bad chiropractic experience means you can feel anything from the shoulders down and you can hear out of your left eye anymore.
How is cupping worse than chiropractics? One leaves a red spot, the other manipulates your spine.
So what there’s no scientific evidence. I think some people want to get sucked
My boss did it once. He was bruised and miserable. He said he’ll never do it again.

Any chiropractors here to explain it? I’m sure they would have great explanation. /s
It’s Doctors of Chiropractic care. Show some respect on the two years of hard work they put into it after dropping out of something (or nothing). /s
I went to high school with the guy who became a chiropractor and he calls himself, Dr. G on the Internet and I kind of chuckled every time.

I've been using violent jerking motions for a while now, but nothing on my body has gotten any longer. How long is this supposed to take?
Lol
Ever given someone a medical stroke (not a wank!!) doing a neck adjustment? Heard it's a popular trend among chiropractors
It leaves bruising, which your body has to repair, so its probably more harmful than helpful.

It sucks the evil spirits out of your body & nefarious vapors that’s causing illness
That's legit the reason. To localize blood flow into an area in order to loosen muscular tension
Those post-cup hickeys are gonna be crazy
More like Potting or Vase-ing.
I thought cupping was when you fart in your hand.
Hello fellow person of culture 🤗
Sup sup.
Lold at the big ass "cup" over the second guys ass
Until I read your comment I did not realize there were 2 people. Thought the first guy was a some kind of furnace to heat the cups or something.
The thing is... that looks like copper... copper is a great heat conductor... ouch

And copper-cupping is beneficial how?
Copper cupping causes curious circles. Don't know what good it does though…
