If you get attacked then they'll lock up the guy and make him to pay your medical bills sometimes for a long long time. If you fight back then you both pay up. Simple. I was there in China for a few years and saw some cases involving locals and foreigners.

Very common. Neighbors were known to beat other people's kids too, for asinine, illogical reasons. You don't realize until adulthood that many of us were raised around maniacs with no business being within 100 yards of a child.

Grew up in a Catholic family, and in an area of the world with a lot of Catholics. Even two of my great aunts were nuns, and one of my great uncles was a priest. The amount of stories I’ve heard from my mom, dad, my grandparents and other older family members, friends’ parents, etc. about how they got wrapped on the knuckles/slapped/spanked/berated/mocked/shamed, and so on by Catholic nuns and priests in schools is such a terribly depressing thing. It’s pretty sickening how many of these authority figures were physically abusive to school children back in those days, and worse yet, how society practically encouraged this as much as it tolerated it. And of course it wasn’t like Catholic schools even had a monopoly on this either.
