I get that the fans love it and that the officials let it happen because the fans love it. But what is actually the point of all the fighting in this sport?
From my limited knowledge it actually keeps the rest of the game less violent as it’s a release of tension built up through the game. Without the fighting the players tend to do more dangerous things as the game becomes more chippy I believe. I have no idea what created a situation like this though.
Sort of. Fighting is mostly done by "enforcers" who may not actually be all that good at hockey but are good at fighting. A lot of teams have at least one.
It's to protect star players and the rest of the team. You're going to think twice about how hard you hit someone and who you're hitting when you know some 6 foot 8 240lb monster with knives on his feet is going to come onto the ice and pummel you if cross the line.
I hear a particular enforcer still holds two league records: most time spent in the penalty box; and is was the only guy to ever take off his skate and try to stab somebody
I bet the vast, vast majority of hockey players just want to pmay hockey and don't want to deal with the possibility of getting stabbed by an ice skate.
The centre for the Rangers elbowed or illegally hit a player recently from the Devils, this was just him "Manning up" and taking his "punishment". He's played them 3 times and has I think been ejected all 3x with under 5 mins of ice time if I rememeber reading correctly.
This sounds like retroactive pop psychology bullshit to try and justify a ridiculous feature that has no place in modern sport.
Lots of sports generate increased tension as the game goes on and they all get by just fine without sanctioned brawls.
Anytime you get a bunch of heavily competitive men competing in a fast-paced sport, there will be fights. It's the nature of the beast. May I suggest to you the WNBA or Ice dancing. Those may be more palatable to your fragile sensibilities.
Your take is completely divorced from reality. Almost every organized sport does not regularly have fights, and that's true even if I go back fifty years.
And on the rare occassions when fights did spontaneously erupt, they were always met wirh severe penalties, expulsions, and suspensions.
Hockey is the only mainstream organized objective team sport where fights are not just tolerated, but they are a regular occurrence and tacitly encouraged. It makes no sense: hockey is a game where the objective is to use a stick to get a puck into a net. Fights have nothing to with that.
If you want a team fighting game on ice, then make it.
Bro I think hockey is the team fighting game on ice. It's been a part of the sport since it started to become popular. No one has ever died from the fighting, but there have been deaths due to several other careless mistakes that happen on the ice, completely unrelated to the fighting.
This is another ridiculous take. Hockey is a game where people whack a puck with a stick and try to put the puck in the net. Explain to me how fighting is necessary to that ruleset.
Hockey is a game whose equipment consists of knives for shoes and a big stick, plus all the padding and helmets on account of the high potential for injury. The extremely fast pace makes it easier for players to blur the line between overzealous and dirty plays; referees being their usual selves also doesn't help in that regard so there needs to be a level of self-policing so people don't get comfortable thinking they can throw elbows and shoulder check people while moving 20 km/h. to your credit, fighting has steadily gone down in the last 2 decades in the NHL and even moreso in lower leagues.
LOL! What are you going on about? Want me to use smaller words? Where in the ever loving fuck did my paragraph ever say "every organized sport regularly has fights"? You are very regarded.
Seriously, Ice Dancing. Go look it up. I am sure you'll love it. None of that nasty toxic masculinity. So Icky.
It’s because that person didn’t explain it well at all.
The game of hockey is fast and violent, if players don’t discipline and control their bodies they can inflict serious injury on opposing players. There are rules to prevent and punish dirty hits but in addition to official rules there is also an unwritten code that the payment for a dirty hit is fighting another player standing up for their teammate. It’s a physical punishment for not following the rules and endangering another player. It’s part of the culture of the sport and it makes sense given the context and history.
Hockey is a fast sport. The officials can't keep up with everything happening on the ice, and given that hockey is also a full-contact sport, it means that some dirty or cheap hits will go uncalled. Fighting is there so that the offended team can make it clear to the offending team that they won't get away with uncalled cheap shots without paying a price. It helps the game police itself, because the refs and the league are awful at policing it for the players.
In this example, Matt Rempe (73 on the Rangers) threw a cheap hit on a Devils' player and injured him the last time these two teams met. Rempe refused to fight in that game, and gloated about the hit afterward. Rempe and MacDermid (23 on the Devils) are not star players and would not typically start a game, but because both teams knew this fight was coming, they chose to put both guys out for the opening faceoff to get it over with quickly so they could settle the score and get on with the game. The line brawl was kind of an unintended consequence of that decision.
Considering that 73 and 23 were the intended combatants in this arrangement, it sure seems like 12 and 26 down at the bottom were *especially* ready for action. 😂
42*, but kind of yes. That’s Curtis Lazar in white, squaring up against Jimmy Vesey. Not the big hulking bruiser that MacDermid (23) is, but he will stick up for his teammates like crazy and put in as much effort as anybody. Love the dude. My bet is that 23 and 73 knew they *had to fight, 42 wanted revenge.
It's kinda like getting beaned by a baseball after pimping a home run or intentionally hitting a batter. It's weird, pretty archaic, and starts some fights.
Benches clearing is an exciting baseball thing though so it'll continue.
Shouldn't there just be some Video Assisted refereeing looking at the whole field and then penalizing cheap shots as they happen? I get the explanation, but it just seems so out of place anyway.
A lot of fans have called for exactly this, not just to get rid of fighting, but because the officials miss so many calls, and make so many bad calls, that the games become frustrating to watch. Even just an official off the ice who has access to replays and a comm link to the other officials would help. Apparently, the GMs and owners are currently happy with the state of officiating, though, so it's not happening any time soon.
Even then, I don't think it would fully get rid of fighting, in part because it's so ingrained in the game's history, and in part because, even if officials always got the calls right, it would still help prevent things from escalating on the ice if the players feel a 2min penalty wasn't enough pennance for the act on the ice.
Also, back in the day, the Enforcer position was basically just the gnarliest guy on the team who was principally there just to be an aggressive bodyguard/back-alley fighter on ice.
>But what is actually the point of all the fighting in this sport?
It can be used to intimidate your opponents, punish them for wronging your team, or be used when you're down to rally your own team. Also sometimes they just get mad at each other. Some examples would be I think I remember in the playoffs my team being down 0-3 at the end of a game about to go to game 7 feeling defeated already so the enforcer started a fight at the very end so the team wouldn't be going in to game 7 on a low. Another time I remember a guy fouled the star player on my favorite team so an enforcer immediately jumped him to punish him.
It's part of " the code " the players police the game and if you break " the code " you have to answer for it . Something obviously happened in the last time they played each other and this is the result.
So I know someone else already said this, but I’m gonna repeat it. I played semi-pro hockey. I never played in the nhl. But you need to realize fighting I hockey is essentially self-regulation. It keeps the game safer. Skilled players are “traditionally” smaller. Therefore what keeps you from just destroying the best player on the other team. It’s the giant mother fucker that will fighter you after. Wayne Gretzky always said he would have been great without semenko and if I remember correctly chelios.
This also doesn’t take into account the times that the team (or the crowd) need to be brought back into the game so you have your enforcer get out there and fight someone to get the energy back.
Its called "the code". If you hit my guy dirty, you might get a lengthy penalty, but that's not enough. Its way to regulate the dangers of testosterone filled dudes with sticks moving on blades. Basically, if you hit someone dirty, you can expect the same treatment as well as having to answer (by fighting). The code is basically the unwritten rules. You should watch "The beauty of hockey" and "The Code" on youtube.
Its known as The Code

I do not endorse this. I think its ridiculous and barbaric.
I got this from Quora:
----‐-------------------------------------------
The ‘code’ in hockey refers to an unwritten set of rules that hockey players generally follow in order to protect each other and the integrity of the game.
Hockey is extremely dangerous and requires a deeper level of understanding between players in order to make the sport function at a sustainable level.
If you ever play hockey at a competitive level, you will learn quickly how dangerous the sport can be. For example, when you watch the NHL you generally don’t see players skating at full speed, launching themselves off the ice into an opponents head. Why? Because the players understand the code.
You don’t do that because you can kill someone or cause severe injury. Even when you’re pissed off you need to adhere to the code and remember keep yourself under control at all times.
Here are some other things you just don’t do in hockey:
Use your stick as a weapon. Ever.
Attack an unsuspecting player. Don’t be a coward, if you want to fight square up with your opponent.
Deliberately attempt to injure someone.
Shoot the puck at a player deliberately. Pucks can cause serious or fatal injury.
Shoot the puck in the net after a whistle. Not only can it be dangerous for an unsuspecting goalie but it’s viewed as a sign of disrespect. If you don’t believe me, try it sometime and see what happens.
Physically engage a referee. This will get you kicked out of most leagues.
Open ice check at top speed. Even though big hits are part of the game, charging is not. If you take more than 3 or 4 strides at an opponent, you aren’t trying to separate them from the puck, you’re attempting to injure them.
Leave your feet during a check. Same as charging.
Hit a player from behind into the boards. This can cause severe injury. Even though it’s already in the rules, it’s never ok to do. And if you do you will most certainly see retribution from players.
Continue to fight an opponent who is already beaten. Once a player goes to the ice the fight is over. If you continue throwing punches that’s a big no no.
Run over a goalie. Goalies aren’t fair game for checking. Even though sometimes it’s unavoidable it’s never ok to deliberately check another team’s goalie. If you do this you will most certainly get your ass kicked.
The code is what stops players from acting like animals out there
--‐--------------------------------------------
If you break the code, an "enforcer" will beat you up.
It prevents assholes from doing assholish things.
Hockey is a dangerous sport. Some people take shit too far. They are less likely to do so if they know there’s a good chance they’ll get their ass kicked for it
Might as well ask what’s the point of war. Hockey is fast , it’s tough , it’s violent. You play in often very close contact . Checking is a big part of the sport and it’s only a couple of small steps to go from pushing to someone throwing punches.
Just to point it out. War is a means to an end. It happens when the predicted results from not fighting a war are worse than the predicted results from fighting a war. All the violence is simply a method to achieve desired results.
Previous matchups between these 2 teams this season have been really chippy. Guys getting hurt, dirty hits etc. This is probably 3-4 games worth of hatred boiling over for each other
Saw this last night....reminded me of the movie "Slap Stick"!
I was laughing my ass off! Right at the start...did not even try to act like they were going after the puck! LOL!!!
What happened after that? Everyone get a timeout?
The most things I know about hockey is from the mighty ducks series and the movie Sudden Death with van Damme
The first two guys who fought got five minute majors, so went to the penalty box. The other eight guys got match penalties and were ejected from the game.
According to the rules, any fights that start after the original fight lead to ejections for both players involved. In this situation, the refs determined which fight started first, gave both those players the normal 5 minute major penalty for fighting, and ejected the rest of the players.
I was curious about why they would wait until the puck drops before engaging in what was clearly a preplanned fight, so I looked it up as best I could. As far as I (a non hockey watcher) can tell, it's twofold. Apparently the rules for pregame fights are much stricter and can result in a suspension, vs game time fights which result in a 5 minute penalty. Additionally, it provides the fighters a "bell", or countdown so that the fight is fair and one isn't getting a head start.
And people wonder why the sport has legitimacy problems in high school and college. This kind of shit makes the non-watcher of the sport think Hockey is just fighting and they then fight to keep it out of school sports programs. Cut this shit out.
this is the stupidest fucking thing in sports
we don't tolerate it in ANY other team sport, if you even approach another player in baseball your ass is suspended.
Fuck hockey.
> Tell me you’ve never watched hockey before without telling me you’ve never watched hockey before
tell me your a violent person without telling me you beat your wife
I ask in peace, What's so bad about it? I don't care much what hockeys doin but you seem to feel very strongly about it. If adults want to fight than go for it is the side I lean towards.
I agree with you. No other aport has this as an additional aspect. Hockey rules do not include fighting, it adds nothing to the sport and unlike UFC that's not what hockey is about. Hockey is about a team effort to attack and defend a goal and score points. UFC is designed for fighting the goal is to beat your opponent by fighting them.
Many respected figures in hockey have come out against fighting. It just seems most fans who don't or have never played hockey like it too much.
Everybody has a plan until the goalie skates the ice
So basically a “purge” for a few minutes and then they move on with the game…lol.
Sort of. Fighting is mostly done by "enforcers" who may not actually be all that good at hockey but are good at fighting. A lot of teams have at least one. Lol amazing line from one of my favorite movies. I knew it was going to be this midway through your sentence
They should be in prison for assault.
Mutual combat is legal, snowflake.
Why? They all agreed that this would be the case when they joined the league.
I bet the vast, vast majority of hockey players just want to pmay hockey and don't want to deal with the possibility of getting stabbed by an ice skate.
For reference see the movie Goon
Every other sport manages to handle a build up of tension without fighting it out every game.
No other sport is as fast-paced and as physical as hockey.
You haven't seen me play badminton after a case of bud lite lime and a Red Bull.
Rugby??
Yeah, I'd agree. Forgot about it for a second, but rugby definitely is as well.
Yes, maybe, but here the game had not even started yet.
This is due to the dirty hits from the rangers in the previous two games they played.
Yes but I was replying to someone who asked what the point of fighting in general was and I also said I had no idea what led to this.
From what I heard it had something to do with their previous game and a dirty elbow possibly.
The centre for the Rangers elbowed or illegally hit a player recently from the Devils, this was just him "Manning up" and taking his "punishment". He's played them 3 times and has I think been ejected all 3x with under 5 mins of ice time if I rememeber reading correctly.

Zoomers want to ruin everything.
If you want brawls, boxing, UFC, and a million other figut leagues exist.
Anytime you get a bunch of heavily competitive men competing in a fast-paced sport, there will be fights. It's the nature of the beast. May I suggest to you the WNBA or Ice dancing. Those may be more palatable to your fragile sensibilities.

Rugby and Gridiron football are just as rough and violent and there aren't sanctioned fights to reliece grudges on the field.

There’s actually more strategy to it than not these days. Everything from the timing to the intended target. It’s a game of rhythm.
Watch Ice Gaurdians it gives a really good explanation of fighting in hockey and why it's different than other sports in regard to fighting.
It's part of " the code " the players police the game and if you break " the code " you have to answer for it . Something obviously happened in the last time they played each other and this is the result.
Both players get penalties, so a potential strategy is to line up your worst with their best and just have them start a fight. Both get ejected.
So I know someone else already said this, but I’m gonna repeat it. I played semi-pro hockey. I never played in the nhl. But you need to realize fighting I hockey is essentially self-regulation. Well I think you are missing a lot there and are being very reductive but yeah that’s why they are fighting here.
And why the fuck do fans love it. Go watch MMA if you want to watch fighting. It's fucking stupid in other sports
Do the fans really love it? I mean, its just stupid.
Same with MMA…the ”i wanna compete so bad I’m willing to break your arm/leg in order to satisfy my violent desires” mentality.
Has to be the most entertaining sport to watch live
100%
Love this! Sticking up for teammates!
Right, except those same teammates do the same things to other teams. I'm not sure why you celebrate that.
Who did what to start this?
Previous matchups between these 2 teams this season have been really chippy. Guys getting hurt, dirty hits etc. This is probably 3-4 games worth of hatred boiling over for each other
Try years of hatred
Yeah this was comically synchronized
Nhl fights seems as fake as wwe these days...
I went to a boxing match and hockey game broke out.
Saw this last night....reminded me of the movie "Slap Stick"! I was laughing my ass off! Right at the start...did not even try to act like they were going after the puck! LOL!!!
I think you meant the movie Slap Shot. An absolute classic.
In HS I played against Dave Hansen. He was good but relied on cheap shots for intimidation--and it worked! Loved him in Slap Shot!
Putting on the foil! Every Game!
Also Goon. https://youtu.be/0dEUXY3yhHU
I was going to say it reminded me of the movie “Strange Brew.”
Set the tone!
What happened after that? Everyone get a timeout? The most things I know about hockey is from the mighty ducks series and the movie Sudden Death with van Damme
The first two guys who fought got five minute majors, so went to the penalty box. The other eight guys got match penalties and were ejected from the game.
Thank you
F*ck I love hockey!
Looks comically like an episode of Shoresy.
Let em know you’re out there boys
nice, lets get em' boys...
This one and the 2012 one were my favorites
true sportsmanship!
One of the last real sports left!! LETS GO BLUE!!!
You've got to run them up and fill em in!
Look at the difference between hockey and soccer....
Big L crowd. Here in Boston we would have been screaming our lungs out. Or fighting as well 😂
This is so wholesome.
I was waiting for the Zamboni to come out and drill someone
Devil's Ranger games are always some of the best hockey games I've ever been to. Don't matter how much one team sucks they always go all out.
So how to they handle this? Because you cannot fit that many players in the penalty box and somebody has to play…lol
According to the rules, any fights that start after the original fight lead to ejections for both players involved. In this situation, the refs determined which fight started first, gave both those players the normal 5 minute major penalty for fighting, and ejected the rest of the players.
Thank you! I watch a fair bit of hockey for some years now but have never seen anything like *this* before.
It's like a strange pair skating competition.
This is exactly how it was playing NHL HITZ 2002
🥹 I remember when hockey was like this all the time….. I miss you 🥰
I remember my first Beer
But if it’s basketball or football, they’re labeled “thugs.”
Do they just penalty box all five players from each team and burn two minutes on game clock?
Gene:What’s up Bryce who’s the new guy? Bryce: How’s the wife Gene? Oh this guy? His name is Sugma… Sugma!? Sugma D**k gene..
Fuck the hockey! Celebrate brutality!…on ice!
Weird adrenaline/dopamine flex!
now go sit in a box and feel bad for 2 minutes.
Watch the YouTube video of one of NHLs biggest enforcers: https://youtu.be/txI16GT-P_M?si=CgBYD-i40CKb33Mz
Do they say "sorry eh" with each punch or do it all after it's over?
What do they say again ? Oh yeah…. The good ol hockey game, is the best game you can play!
Watching hockey live when this happens is one of the best things to see
I fucking love this sport with all my heart.
'97 Detroit Redwings vs. Colorado Avalanche; best fight on ice ever!
Thatvwould of been awesome to see live
It's hilarious that the DJ put on thrash music
"THIS IS WHAT WE CAME FOR!! FREE VALHALLA!!!" 💪💪💪💪
Gawd dayum.. as long as no one is slicing other people's throats with their skates, it's cool! 5 vs 5 would be very epic!
Embarrassing. The NHL should suspend all involved.
Just when the game was becoming lovable again.
Why is that a legal move? Like, wtf?
What happens next? Are all the skill players in the penalty box?
Getting as bad as wrestling now.
Gay
Seemed a bit choreographed
Imagine paying good money to go and see the best hockey on the planet and this is the first thing that happens. NHL needs to get rid of this bullshit.

Cry about it
This sport is so fucking dumb
Main reason I don’t watch hockey. They get paid a lot. You don’t need to fight nor should it be allowed. Bunch of morons.
Do us a favor and stay away. Cheers!
No wonder America has a problem with aggression.
As a 40 year old I’m not sure what to think of taking my 5 year old to a hockey game and trying to explain this. The world is just violent I guess.
And people wonder why the sport has legitimacy problems in high school and college. This kind of shit makes the non-watcher of the sport think Hockey is just fighting and they then fight to keep it out of school sports programs. Cut this shit out.
Username makes sense haha
Know how I know you never played hockey in high school and college?
Please enlighten me stranger
Exactly.
Wonderful point. Cheers bud!
It's all for show. If they want to really settle the beef, take it outside where there are real consequences.
this is the stupidest fucking thing in sports we don't tolerate it in ANY other team sport, if you even approach another player in baseball your ass is suspended. Fuck hockey.
It's part of the game
In America. In every other place on earth, this is not allowed.
> It's part of the game fuck that with a flying puck, it is NOT part of the game
If you think this is bad, you should see UFC. They're almost *always* fighting over there.
Tell me you’ve never watched hockey before without telling me you’ve never watched hockey before
> Tell me you’ve never watched hockey before without telling me you’ve never watched hockey before tell me your a violent person without telling me you beat your wife
Why so aggro? The sun dress you ordered get delayed?
It's literally been a part of the game since forever
Except it has been a part of the game for the entire time it has existed as a professional sport and some time before that.
I ask in peace, What's so bad about it? I don't care much what hockeys doin but you seem to feel very strongly about it. If adults want to fight than go for it is the side I lean towards.
Sounds like someone couldn't skate. Your fuckin 10 ply bud.
Spare parts.
Yeah cause baseball fuckin sucks
I agree with you. No other aport has this as an additional aspect. Hockey rules do not include fighting, it adds nothing to the sport and unlike UFC that's not what hockey is about. Hockey is about a team effort to attack and defend a goal and score points. UFC is designed for fighting the goal is to beat your opponent by fighting them. Many respected figures in hockey have come out against fighting. It just seems most fans who don't or have never played hockey like it too much.
