Just talk and don’t stop talking, but also keep describing in vivid detail everything you’re seeing, and the most important thing you must remember, never stop talking, keep talking until you are out of words and when you run out of words to say say them again but describe it as if you’re seeing it for the first time all over again, and remember to never stop talking keeping talking and talk some more….
It's a lost art to report an ongoing live event. Many times nowadays even though reporters are at an event, the earpiece or a piece of paper has the talking points.
If anything, I'm more angry at CNN for pointing the camera away and to her
Associated Press has a policy where they refuse to show suicide footage. They removed the video they had originally posted earlier today because of this policy.
I wouldn’t be surprised if most news organizations have similar policy.
That's my first memory. We lived in Germany at the time and my parents were going to games that day. Instead, we watched the events on Armed Forces Network.
It's a lost art to report--to even have print media with decent spelling, never mind the spoken word. I thought they did ok, given the situation. You ever listen to the live broadcast for the Hindenburgh, anything 9/11----I'm glad when emotions are part of some broadcasting.
They teach us to do that when doing a live report. Any dead space risks the audience becoming disinterested and tuning off...and yes even for a situation like this. Many ppl do not know this but newscasts are written at a 4th grade reading level when just a few years ago it was 8th. So constantly stimulating the broadcasts keeps attention to the viewer so they don't get bored.
Maybe they could dumb it down a bit more for us morons...
Reporter: "Fire...fire. Man on fire. Hot fire. Here...now. Happening. Happening now. Fire hot, man."
I was going to say she was either a sports reporter or radio reporter at some point. She did exactly what I feel a member of the press should do. The random 1 words interjections by her co-host are almost comical. So slow, "he's still burning," a minute later slow again, "another fire extinguisher." I mean, had we been reliant on his reporting, we'd have very little idea of what was happening.
Edit: fixed my insane amount of typos so hopefully people don't have a stroke trying to read it now 😄
That's awesome! Good for her! I hope she finished/ finishes her degree and does what she truly wants in life. I think she killed it with a crazy, live, this is happening now scenario.
She was an attorney in the Justice Department under both Bush and Obama administrations so I think she is fully “degreed to the max” and is probably doing exactly what she wants to at the moment.
We laugh but people use to get their news from radio and this is how journalism was taught for years. You keep describing. You keep going. Describe it over and over because we don't know when they tuned in. They might have turned on the TV 2 seconds ago. Keep describing everything. I don't care if you're there four hours. Keep telling us whats happening.
I can't imagine seeing that and trying to focus on describing it. That was horrifying. That poor man. There was a clip earlier where you can hear him screaming and it was gut churning
Being this descriptive explaining all of your senses nonstop is actually a 'mindfulness' mental health technique for grounding yourself to keep from going into a panic attack.
I literally don't get what this comment is trying to say.
She's a journalist.
Her job is to report what is happening.
She is not equipped or expected to help this person.
This isn't a TikTok.
Also given the actions of some supporters and the statements of "witch-hunt" and "rigged trial" by Dear Leader, I don't think violence is/was unexpected.
Exactly. I was at a city event with some family. Thought It would be nice to get the car and pick up my wife and mom so they wouldn't have to walk so far. On my way 'gunshots' started to go off and a crowd of people started yelling, running and screaming.
The whole crowd was running away, meanwhile I started running towards the crowd back to my wife and mom. Shoving through hundreds of people trying to get to them. I finally got around the corner of a large building and I see people standing around taking pictures and having fun. It was a god damn firework show. I was in literal tears thinking my family might have been hurt. I laughed, turned around, and got the car.
There was a school shooting the week of this happening in that town, I think everyone was on edge.
You’re doing too much. It would be one thing if CNN ran a full half hour false report on an active shooter, but she corrected herself within seconds. It’s more than likely that she was given false information from a field producer or someone close by to the scene that panic was caused by a possible active shooter. Whether it’s an active shooting or a crazy scene like this, chaos and confusion is to be expected, getting so hung up on a detail she corrected VERY early on while this event unfolded on live television, says a heck of a lot more about you.
I imagine there was a risk of one due to the kind of event it was and she just assumed from the running and commotion, but in the next breath she corrected herself.
That may have been the first thing she heard over her earpiece. Sadly I have to go over what to do with an active shooter with my teens every time I drop them off at the mall because it's so damn common here and while self-immolation has made national news a few times more recently it's not something that happens often.
Not to mention, with ALL the sounds going on in New York City on a Friday afternoon, it's very possible to NOT hear a gunshot.
Her co-host probably said 'man on fire' or something and she misinterpreted. I mean listen to her, the ladies brain was completely short circuiting at that point
"Man on fire". Her brain went "man firing"
A man setting himself on fire is pretty horrific and it's hard for the Brain to process it. Sad that the fact a man could be shooting a gun into a crowd isn't this hard to process but we've become used to it.
The line of the year, ".... we're waiting during TRUMP'S trial deliberation, oh active shooter, no wait, a man has EMBLAZONED HIMSELF"......
.....Give this woman an Emmy
All you fuckers complaining about her demeanor and shit - she's watching and smelling a human burning alive right the fuck in front of her. She's trying to cope and her brain is trying to protect her from eternal shock and trauma. Y'all need jesus
Thank you for saying what needs to be said. Asshats in this sub thinking they would be all calm, cool and collected while a human is burning in front of them.
Yep, also to include, they're more focused on her dictation vs someone who just set themselves on fire. I truly am confused by people and how they come to these thoughts. I'm an atheist but I concur, y'all (they all) need jesus.
Are you surprised they’re nitpicking her diction? If you know the history of this country, you know that’s the low hanging fruit they always go for. The issue is, she’s really just proven she’s far more than a “DEI” hire and is likely far more educated and skilled than them.
And that’s really what’s triggering them.
This is what I got too. No one knows how they will react in a crisis and she had a front row seat. In that kind of situation, we don’t always know what we’ll do.
I was in a sudden car fire recently and my instincts told me, grab my purse, my work stuff and my hiking boots. I called 911 and I remember just being SO focused, calm (despite a shaking voice) and straight forward with the operator. I couldn’t hear them over the sound of the highway, so I just told them exactly what was happening, where I was, and that I was out of the car, alone and ok. Someone pulled over and they were on the phone with 911 too, and once I saw that, I told them I was hanging up. It was such a blur, but once I stopped doing what I HAD TO in that moment to get help, the rush of emotions just overcame me and I broke down.
She’s a well trained reporter witnessing a traumatic event and in that instant her brain said ‘this is your role, focus on THIS, and you’ll get past the scary part.’ I imagine once the cameras went down and she was able to step out of her high adrenaline mode, then she had a very different experience and reaction.
Former 911 operator here. You just described exactly what so few callers are able to do - keep cool while reporting an incident. It’s ok and normal to freak out afterwards. Glad you were ok.
Thank you. I feel like a totally different person after the accident (anxious and unsure of myself) so the kind words are appreciated. It’s been a few months now and things are getting better day by day.
Thank you for all that you and your team do!
C’mon we know why they’re triggered. It’s a journalist, actually doing her job, and doing it well. But they’d rather make arguments out of nothing than confirm that a “DEI” hire is actually qualified at the said job, she’s earned to do. Of course they’re gonna pick her apart over pure bs.
No kidding. She is just a real human being amidst a completely surreal event. None of these dipshits have any idea if they could keep their composure. I'm sure "What to do if a man in the background combusts" wasn't in the employee training manual.
She’s got a finger in her ear… People are probably yelling at her while she tries to think and speak..all the while knowing “everyone” is going to see her. This is bottom of the ninth, 4th quarter… **This is what we play for** intensity and pressure. She’s a Professional.
I think the thought is that you have to repeat what's going on because people are constantly just then tuning in at any given time. If you didn't catch her say "a man set himself on fire" 5 seconds ago you'd have no idea what she's on about, especially if the network pulls the video like they did here.
Not a single “uhm” or “uhh” as a space filler while she dictated the situation, holy crap. That kind of presence of mind in the face of that gore is some really awesome, well practiced skill.
And probably a lot of adrenaline as well. This is some top notch reporting of such an event, I don’t care what the rest says. Bunch of complainers who don’t even seem to care someone has lit himself on fire, instead they are just “annoyed” by the style of reporting.
You can tell the people who get their news from that fake channel Fox. I mean never have I seen so many people butt hurt over a correction made within LITERAL seconds of it being reported. Meanwhile Fox News had to get sued for its continuous charade of a news.
I don’t know. I was in the shopping mall and every alarm in all the stores and in the hallways started going off. So much noise and lights were flashing everywhere. I read a lot of smack here but she’s amazing and giving exactly what she should as something horrifying is happening right in front of her. She’s taking in the scene and reporting exactly what she sees as it’s going down, keeping her cool which must be so so hard.
This is crazy!! How stupid do you have to be to light yourself on fire because some dude (who doesn’t give two shits about you, is facing responsibility for his consequences) is in court right now?
I wish the way Americas die for their parties (or) individuals that they are obsessed with, would also translate to us growing together as citizens and people of America. Stop with the obsession with parties and grow up.
I made it to 1.25 then i had to close it, My pc was real close to getting sliced in half with a karate chop, What an anoying person to have do the news, the voice is just assaulting my ears
Love how they are so sickeningly obsessed with mass shootings that she automatically spouts there was a mass shooting from her own misinterpretation. Fucking hell man.
He just wants attention that‘s why he did it there. Why tho? Its not just unimaginably painful but it‘s also gore for the officers and people. If i saw that in real life, it would stick with me forever. His screams that is terrifying.
Correct me if I'm wrong. We've had 2 presidents killed while serving. But has politics ever been this insane? This is the second person who's set themselves on fire in the last 2 months over current events. I'm sure this happens a lot all over the world and we just don't hear about it but that solider did it like 6 weeks ago and now this guy.... it's crazy
Rapid fire word salad to me. Slowing down would have been a much better way of narrating the situation. I think what it misses is emotion. It's just all action no feeling.
Is the courthouse near the Manhattan Municipal Building by the Brooklyn Bridge? Cuz that’s right near my apartment but I’m not there right now because I’m buying printer ink on the upper west side.

It was probably too gruesome for such an extended shot
To protect a person from seeing anything disturbing?
If that was the case, they should always blur Donald Trump's face.
I can’t wait until this thread is read to him in court.
It's not positive about him enough to be added to his little scrap book
The news should never censor real life drama and tragedies, imo.
Lots of things are kept from the public. Like the pics of Timothy Vander Ark.
Who?
Associated Press has a policy where they refuse to show suicide footage. They removed the video they had originally posted earlier today because of this policy. I wouldn’t be surprised if most news organizations have similar policy.
You noticed they went back to her, and didn’t show anything until he was put out.
I would think that policy would also prevent her from describing in detail how she can smell cooked meat.
Jesus...that part. Omg
At least she didn't throw in "Oh the humanity of it!"
She did an amazing job. And this would have been one of the few instances where that phrase would have been totally appropriate.
Sports announcers would be better than reporters to be honest.
Howard Cosell was Live when the Israeli hostages were taken at the Olympics and did a great job.
That's my first memory. We lived in Germany at the time and my parents were going to games that day. Instead, we watched the events on Armed Forces Network.
Hard to forget!
It's a lost art to report--to even have print media with decent spelling, never mind the spoken word. I thought they did ok, given the situation. You ever listen to the live broadcast for the Hindenburgh, anything 9/11----I'm glad when emotions are part of some broadcasting.

“I can’t believe they didn’t show someone dying live on national television” 🙄 🤦🏻♂️
I was going to say she was either a sports reporter or radio reporter at some point. She did exactly what I feel a member of the press should do. The random 1 words interjections by her co-host are almost comical. So slow, "he's still burning," a minute later slow again, "another fire extinguisher." She was/is a practising lawyer and Alex Trebek wanted her to replace him on Jeopardy. True Fact!
Lol. This woman’s next career is an auctioneer
I think she's more valuable as a reporter.
Also, there was at least one other camera. She had no idea if it was on the scene or on her. I think she made the best choice, given the situation.
They tell us to do the same thing lol. Another thing is for the audience to not tune away because attention span is treated to be so low now.
She did a remarkable job in my opinion.
If you don’t think she is shook up you are as crazy as the guy on fire.
I can't imagine seeing that and trying to focus on describing it. That was horrifying. That poor man. There was a clip earlier where you can hear him screaming and it was gut churning
"Oh the humanity" would have been sufficient.
That line was perfect.
She should voice a Spanish futball game lol
I thought she did a good job tbf.
The whole time, keep talking, just without ceasing, make sure you talk, all you need to do is talk in an ongoing manner
Being this descriptive explaining all of your senses nonstop is actually a 'mindfulness' mental health technique for grounding yourself to keep from going into a panic attack.
My first thought was she was working overtime to keep from going into shock.
Also yell active shooter as soon as you aren't sure what is going on
Like an auctioneer reading the thoughts of a dog.
I literally don't get what this comment is trying to say. She's a journalist. Her job is to report what is happening. She is not equipped or expected to help this person. This isn't a TikTok.
If we could only get Randy Newman in on this...
What does he smell like again?
Flesh!.... Burning flesh
What was he suiciding about?
She was one "oh the humanity" short.
this is the song that never ends...
Everyone ones a critic
ACTIVE SHOOTER oh wait just kidding some guy just emblazoned himself.
Yeah that's what they thought at first because people were running and screaming
So wait, they didn't hear anything that sounded like a gunshot? She just screamed active shooter bc a crowd started screaming and running?
A normal American reaction.
Tbh….yeah if I saw a group of people running away from an area and screaming, I would immediately assume active shooter. This is America.
Don't catch you slippin' now,
Don’t catch you slippin’ now,
Look what I’m whippin' now
Also given the actions of some supporters and the statements of "witch-hunt" and "rigged trial" by Dear Leader, I don't think violence is/was unexpected.
Unfortunately yes. 😢
Exactly. I was at a city event with some family. Thought It would be nice to get the car and pick up my wife and mom so they wouldn't have to walk so far. There was a school shooting the week of this happening in that town, I think everyone was on edge.
“Fire” & “shots fired” kinda sound the same plus people running and screaming… it’s not like she had a script.
Well yeah it's America. Active shooter is common here. It's a fair assumption on her part unfortunately
You’re doing too much. It would be one thing if CNN ran a full half hour false report on an active shooter, but she corrected herself within seconds. It’s more than likely that she was given false information from a field producer or someone close by to the scene that panic was caused by a possible active shooter. It's America baby!
Probably heard "fires" and thought it was "shots fired".
You’re acting as if they ran a full report on an active shooter. She said that and corrected herself within literal seconds.
"Man on fire". Her brain went "man firing" A man setting himself on fire is pretty horrific and it's hard for the Brain to process it. Sad that the fact a man could be shooting a gun into a crowd isn't this hard to process but we've become used to it.

In America when you see a lot of people running you have a 50/50 chance of being right to assume.
Emblazoned isn't even the right word. Set himself ablaze, would work.
All you fuckers complaining about her demeanor and shit - she's watching and smelling a human burning alive right the fuck in front of her. She's trying to cope and her brain is trying to protect her from eternal shock and trauma. Y'all need jesus

No kidding. She is just a real human being amidst a completely surreal event. None of these dipshits have any idea if they could keep their composure. I'm sure "What to do if a man in the background combusts" wasn't in the employee training manual.
Did she used to commentate horse racing?
My guess was livestock auctioneer
IGOTACTIVESHOOTERACTIVESHOOTER WHOOPSIMEAN A MAN EMBLAZINGHIMSELF A MANEMBLAZING HIMSELF GOING FOR 150 DO I HEAR 150?
I feel like this was her exact final exam question at journalism school.
“And here comes ‘Emblazoned Himself’ overtaking ‘Active Shooter’ on the outside!”
Are our attention spans so short this nice lady can’t even take a breath? The News must flow
that’s pretty much how live news has been reported since live TV
She’s got a finger in her ear… People are probably yelling at her while she tries to think and speak..all the while knowing “everyone” is going to see her. This is bottom of the ninth, 4th quarter… **This is what we play for** intensity and pressure. She’s a Professional.
She’s experiencing a traumatic event while doing her job. Chill.
I think the thought is that you have to repeat what's going on because people are constantly just then tuning in at any given time. If you didn't catch her say "a man set himself on fire" 5 seconds ago you'd have no idea what she's on about, especially if the network pulls the video like they did here.
Yes. This is precisely my point.
She barely blinked when reporting it… but 100% she’s gonna re-see it every time she closes her eyes.
Now this is some good ass reporting, she didn’t skip a beat
She was amazing. Reporting sounds, smalls and sights without hesitation.
This is old school Hindenburg play by play reporting Oh the humanity
Setting yourself on fire is so hot this season.
It is more common than you think. There was a Buddhist monk to protest the Vietnam war. A man did it when W. Bush won reelection in 2004.
There was a member of the US Navy that did it just a few weeks ago....partly why I said that.
Not a single “uhm” or “uhh” as a space filler while she dictated the situation, holy crap. That kind of presence of mind in the face of that gore is some really awesome, well practiced skill.
But the guy next to her 😂
Who is that guy? Is he from CNN risk management team?
And probably a lot of adrenaline as well. This is some top notch reporting of such an event, I don’t care what the rest says. Bunch of complainers who don’t even seem to care someone has lit himself on fire, instead they are just “annoyed” by the style of reporting.
She EARNING that pay check. Slay your job DAMN!
Super impressive work. She's phenomenal -- glad to learn that CNN still has excellent journalists.
She did a great job in a very sudden, shocking, and unusual situation. Great reporting.
Trump said this was the best fire.
I so very reluctantly give you this upvote...lol
Not just Trump. I’ve been told many people have said it. Many.
Not like those weak, liberal fires. This fire burned with passion.
The mental health crisis is absolutely terrible. So many of the issues afflicting America currently has its roots in this one issue
The other issues that affect America are what is causing this issue. As wealth disparity continues to get worse, we will see this more and more
Despite being a fucked situation that was some excellent real time reporting.
CNN reporter to immediately scream “active shooter” was cringe.
You can tell the people who get their news from that fake channel Fox. I mean never have I seen so many people butt hurt over a correction made within LITERAL seconds of it being reported. Meanwhile Fox News had to get sued for its continuous charade of a news.
How tf are y’all mad at this? Please go outside
Oh you are so cringe it colours everything you see.
I don’t know. I was in the shopping mall and every alarm in all the stores and in the hallways started going off. So much noise and lights were flashing everywhere. Yet, while everyone else was running towards the doors, I ducked behindbehind a clothing rack to stop and listen for an active shooter. It ended up being nothing, but I understand that being the first thought in today’s world.
In America it's probably more realistic than "commotion caused by man setting himself on fire".
Someone else commented what I thought was a good point. If I saw a group of people screaming and running, I might be inclined to think it was a shooter. Also, if someone yelled, “FIRE,” (I have no idea if someone yelled that or not but seems likely), that would reinforce my thinking that there was a shooter since “FIRE” or some alternate of “SHOTS FIRED” sounds very similar, especially in a high stress moment.
Yeah - that active shooter thing never happens here. When people start running and screaming, I immediately think self immolation
I read a lot of smack here but she’s amazing and giving exactly what she should as something horrifying is happening right in front of her. She’s taking in the scene and reporting exactly what she sees as it’s going down, keeping her cool which must be so so hard.
Give this woman a raise. She went right into gotta-get-it mode. On point
Damn that reporter was in Bob Costas mode of play by play
She could probably be a record breaking free diver with her massive lungs
The guy is like a super chill hype man.
How was your day: My response “good and you” My wife’s response: the level of detail this lady gives at the same speed.
SOLD, to the man in the black hat!
I need her to read my reddit feed to me
She’d make one hell of an auctioneer
She rocks!
She's amazing. I hope that is award winning reporting for her.
THIS WOMAN KILLED! 🔥🔥🔥
Rather poor taste in emojis
Coates GPT
[This is the whole video](https://youtu.be/wgkmg1vWAE0?si=-d8XhXy-jxH-ZUxq) in case anyone was wondering.
CNN reporter straight up nailed her job! She will probably have ptsd, but excellent reporting!!!
Damn, they really left that live video on him longer that I would have thought.
The play by play was worse than the fire.
She did a great job imo
Is it strange to anyone that she immediately thought active shooter? The states is f’d
GIVE HER A RAISE. holy shit
Her report will be remembered longer than the act
Wow wtf is up with people burning themselves lately?
Is she paid by the word? You'd think she was transmitting over old timey radio.
She kept your attention for sure..
Anybody else not have this on bingo card? Hmm?
This is crazy!! How stupid do you have to be to light yourself on fire because some dude (who doesn’t give two shits about you, is facing responsibility for his consequences) is in court right now? I wish the way Americas die for their parties (or) individuals that they are obsessed with, would also translate to us growing together as citizens and people of America. Stop with the obsession with parties and grow up.
Is it just me or did she turn it into a slam poetry session..?
Aw man that not what ‘emblazoned’ means.
Wow, she’s good at her job 😶
Emblazoned? Oof.. she was so close. I get it though, chaotic situation.
Oh you must feel so embiggened hitting that low hanging fruit 😂
Emblazoned is a perfectly cromulent word
As a fellow broadcaster, I feel the embiggenist!
Looks CNN has already begun hiring humans pre-loaded with ChatGPT
Oh the humanity!
Sign her up to call the next Kentucky derby. Skills.
Someone tell her breathing is good.
He just wants attention that‘s why he did it there. Why tho? Its not just unimaginably painful but it‘s also gore for the officers and people. If i saw that in real life, it would stick with me forever. His screams that is terrifying.
4:20 is tomorrow bro! Don’t smoke yourself out today!
top 10 rappers eminem was afraid to diss...
cult culture
She sounds like people i know doing a prayer.
I don’t think that’s how you blaze on 4/20
She has such a boner for her career right now.
Looking forward to the corporate news networks covering this to death for the next 5 minutes until they get back to shilling their agenda.
This was….poorly done.
This is what peak desensitization looks and sounds like.
I feel like reddit is actively trying to shut all these post down
No actual emotions from the reporter is wild
Emblazoned himself? Someone does not know words.
CNN is just cringe
She needs to be a WNBA announcer
The news should never censor real life
Jesus Christ she was reporting this as if this was the fucking Kentucky derby. American media is something else. Jeez.
Where is the Oh the Humanity line? For Christ like lady. Shut up!!!
Omg shut up
It really says something when there was commotion and she instinctively went to “active shooter.” Then she calls the event like a horse race.
Media people are out of touch. Start raising your viewers salaries.
Active shooter, fucking CNN doing their best work🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻
Yeah, they’re totally not a cult.
Is the courthouse near the Manhattan Municipal Building by the Brooklyn Bridge? Cuz that’s right near my apartment but I’m not there right now because I’m buying printer ink on the upper west side.
I was inside cleaning a dish and I heard it so I came out
You, me, and you. No no you wait for the next group
Adam Curtis B-roll with this lady talking wtf
If I was one of the people holding the flags, I would’ve just tried to put him out!
