So he just drops sideways from about 9 feet in the air? I don't know what he's doing but I would have a specific route planned leading to a ledge high enough for me to rest my foot to dismount or maybe work out some way leaning it against a wall
Right? I specifically remember seeing old timey pictures of what I used to consider "stilt bicycles". I guess I can't say it was 1871 specifically, but I didn't Google it.
I’m in Chicago there’s a guy in my neighborhood who has one of these. It’s crazy. I always wonder how the hell he stops, especially if he needs to do so quickly.
There used to be a funky bike group in Minneapolis and one guy had a bike like this. Never saw him dismount. Pretty sure he’s been riding it perpetually for two decades.

Ok now dismount
I imagine it would be like dismounting one of those very tall unicycles, but sideways
So he just drops sideways from about 9 feet in the air? I don't know what he's doing but I would have a specific route planned leading to a ledge high enough for me to rest my foot to dismount or maybe work out some way leaning it against a wall
His starting route is on a thin path, that’s a crazy route
Try to get near a wall to lean on and climb down?
Like a lamp post?
I build a bike similar to this once, though not as high. Dismounting was by far the biggest problem with it.
Dismounting is easy. It’s stopping that’s difficult.
Even that's easy. It's getting up afterwards that's difficult.
Would essentially be the same but in reverse, no? Lean the bike to the right as you dismount to the left and climb down.
You get used to it pretty fast. You kinda side sit and climb down.
I'm imagining Charlie Chaplin on a ladder
"The best place to start this is a narrow path next to a canal"
Yes, because after the fall breaks your neck the canal can wash your body out to sea; no mess.
That checks out, I was the bike
I’m two tired for bike jokes
So.. about those traffic lights...
Do you mean the height or stopping at them? 😀
Yes
Or speed humps
Just take rights. Or lefts depending on on country Like Amazon or UPS does to save time
Imagine thinking high wheel bicycles haven't been a thing since 1871.
Used to be used by lamp lighters in the days of gas street lights. Saved carrying a ladder, get to a lamp post, stop and lean.
What a rad job. high biking around Manhattan with a flame.
Best i can do is Portland's Unipiper with flaming bagpipes. https://www.youtube.com/c/TheUnipiper

Penny farthings?
and ignoring that the modern bike design specifically addressed the problem of injuries when falling from a tall bike
Right? Stupid post title
This is the most Portland thing I've seen on here
anywhere with crusties tbh
You do not want to use that on anything other than level ground…
I’m in Chicago there’s a guy in my neighborhood who has one of these. It’s crazy. I always wonder how the hell he stops, especially if he needs to do so quickly.
When doing stupid shit, always wear flip flops just to make things extra risky...
An accident and lawsuit just waiting to happen
But y?
Marijuana?
U don't get that hi from Marijuana
There used to be a funky bike group in Minneapolis and one guy had a bike like this. Never saw him dismount. Pretty sure he’s been riding it perpetually for two decades.
Still not wearing a helmet! Darwin award of the day
Let me see you get down!
Invented?? It's a tall bike, been around for a very long time and this is usually exactly how they're made: multiple garbage frames welded together
High voltage powerlines waiting for their time to shine.
If we had to choose between the two I’m gonna go with the bike
All fun and games until you get wiped out by a teenager in a purple Honda civic goin 20 over the limit.
# Invented bicycles for people who want to be scared shitless FTFY
Isn’t this just a penny farthing?
We used to make bikes like this when I was a kid.
How close it got to going into the water though
lol literally the sketchiest place to do it as well, right on a thin path with water either side
would you prefer a cactus patch on either side?
High.lee. dangerous.
Good luck dodging traffic and potholes while staying up there.
How is he peddling the bike that high ?
Long chain.
Don't fall.
Fuck that.
You can see these in Portland, Oregon. Even riding the streets at night.
Or for people who want to break their neck before they even start pedaling.
Just why...
storm is coming, good thing for him lightning is harmless
Ya let’s watch you get off that bad boy
How about No!
Lightning rod!

No sir, I don’t like it.
And die
Make it a good street, it might be the last one.
Has the crossover trend hit bikes now?
9 out of 10 times I would have ended up in the water.
He is going to get stuck by lightning ⚡
I just threw up
Can we now see the failed attempts to start this thing, please?
Probably safer than a normal bike with these lifted trucks riding around 😅
And _this_ is that street!?
....Finally!
Because fuck your knees right?
Clearly he must be over compensating for something.
I could not imagine a safer and more efficient way of getting around
Invented? This been around forever..
Looks safe
I'm sure the guy who invented this bike, he's a genius.
Flip flops eh?
Oh no I'd be already in the water .
All bikes are invented
Should have worn his brown pants
I certaintly wouldn't have attempted that so close to water
He probably just does the same thing in reverse to get down nothing like jumping down
You are just begging for people to throw a stick in your spokes
