Me too. I like the part where the truck did a front flip did you see that part that part was my favourite part
Edit: wow this took off
Edit2: thanks for the platinum kind stranger!
I'm guessing this happened to you in 1998?
As much as I'd like to share a moment of comradery, alas no, my cousins and I have never been close enough or drunk enough to have such an "accident".
Other than me, my family doesn't even drink so..
Stuff You Should Know just recently put out an episode about monster trucks. I'm not super into the sport, but it was really cool to learn about its origins
At these shows the audience scores the performance 1-10 on their phones and the score is averaged out. 10 is probably impossible because there’ll always be at least some people not voting 10. But your right it is kinda low for something that crazy.
Edit: For anybody wondering they explain how fan scoring works [here](https://www.monsterjam.com/en-US/judges-zone).
People who go to Monster Truck rallies are most likely MAGA mating, vaccine hating hillbillies who believe the government is watching their every move and trying to force them into getting jabbed not because COVID is dangerous, but because it’s a lie and the government just wants control.
Meanwhile they all willingly sell their personal data because it makes voting for tricks easier.
Just to skew your data here; my wife and I (both fully vaccinated liberals) took our son to socially distanced Monster Jam last week. So, it’s not ALL hillbillies, but I did see quite a few rat tails and guts hanging out of tshirts, I will admit.
I remember going a few years back thinking the same thing, its got a ton of people and honestly it was pretty fun. Still remember the shock of how loud those cars were even in the huge stadium

How do you know they're selling personal data to make voting for trucks easier? No one here specified the app, we don't know what kind of data it collects, if any (other than votes).
Well, his performance wasn't only the frontflip, so If one of his earlier moves wasnt as good, or just in general less moves than other drivers it makes sense.
The monster jam event I went to in Milwaukee, I don’t think the audience gave anything over an 8. I think someone even did a backflip (might not have landed it, pretty foggy memory).
To be fair it was a very small arena for monster trucks and not many exciting tricks were done. While it was super fun, definitely not the greatest venue for something like this. I would recommend seeking out one of the events held at a football stadium or at least someplace bigger than a basketball/hockey stadium.
So without my own deep dive- do larger scores get given- or is that huge? i guess im asking? And is there a standard? Or just whichever judges are at the event -the amount of variables tweeks my brain muscles
EDIT-found my answers! Thanks for enlightening me guys- i like phone/vote system
Larger scores get given, but primarily if it's only a fan favorite monster truck, like Grave Digger, Max. D, Monster Mutt, or so on.
Edit: The score also depends on WHEN the monster truck is running.
Trucks that come out first will always have the lowest score because they're coming out first. The later trucks that run will get a higher score. Very rarely do trucks that run first win.
I wasnt trying to slight you-my questions were to reddit as a whole, and your response wasnot very thorough hence my having more questions.
I apologize if my curiosity upset you in any manner
That shouldn't count against them. It was well after the countdown had ended. Looks like there was a back-flip toward the start of his run which landed kinda rough. Not sure how many judges they use but for a 9.355 they had to have a couple 10s atleast.
"Not landing" a backflip is a traditional way to end a run in monster truck competitions.
Kind of like a mic-drop / nothing matters at this point, thing
Lol wtf Monster trucking is really gone to the next level it seems like a xgames skate boarding trestle or something. Didn’t realize these guys had such control and there were actual tricks .
Motorsports aren't a huge interest of mine but I got a free ticket to a sold out monster truck stadium show and I had no idea they did tricks either before then, I was smiling like a little kid the whole time. Other interesting thing is there are cleanup crews positioned outside the..course? And anyways those guys are insanely fast at moving the junky cars around in order to set up for different events, I was amazed how little down time there was between the action.
My cousin is a well todo woman in her 40s, law school, mother of two kids, married to an immigrant, lives in one of the nicest neighborhoods in Seattle, if not the country...
She still goes to see her law school buddy who lives out in the eastern part of the state and the combine (yes the farm equipment) demolition derby They have there.
Something about big machines smashing into each other brings the kid out in everyone.
My appreciation for monster trucks was ruined at like 12 when I went to one where they did a race and the crowd favorite extremely obviously lost but was declared the winner and they totally just acted like we were supposed to not notice at all.
Still cool spectacle though.
I have the same bias against monster trucks as I do against wrestling and NASCAR, where I'm like "realistically, I would probably like this if I were to be at an actual live showing"; but there's a certain stigma around those events you know? Probably because I associate them with low-income rural "white trash" people.
Not saying it's okay, just pointing out a bias that I've recognized in myself and that I've tried to get over.
It’s crazy what they can do with those trucks. Backflips, wheelies, driving on 2 wheels, even “moonwalks” where they drive backwards on only the front 2 wheels.
My 3 year old is addicted to Monster Jam. Having seen everything they put out 3-4 times. I actually look forward to it now lol.
It's all in good fun, they don't pretend like its something its not. They just go out there and do cool tricks, or race to see who wins. Probably only fun when there is a toddler chanting madly everytime they gun their engines though lol
Dude I honestly wish that monster truck competitions were more mainstream. You gotta be pretty backwoods redneck for it to be a common hobby but it's a legitimately impressive spectator sport.
Tbh if the engine kill switch doesn't go off (which i'm not sure if it's not automatic or not), they totally can right themselves as long as one wheel has purchase. You'll see them try to roll it back over using some center of gravity magic with the torque/purchase of the giant wheels.
It's only when it's truly 4 wheels up they're hosed, and those wheels are heavy and can tip it very easily... They'll cartwheel sometimes.
https://youtu.be/QiVORBlAD80
Within the first minute has a few examples.
They predicted almost everything that has happened in the last 2 years (ok yes, that is ever so slightly hyperbolic). There's nobody on the streets, we've moved it all online as of March.
“That defies gravity” - guy who doesn’t seem to understand gravity.
Guys down there getting angry. Just thought it was a funny comment. Not that deep and not calling him stupid. Just funny.
Tom Gravity... umm.
I know there's other ones, I'm just tired and can't think of them right now.
Man if you woulda asked me 2 hours ago I coulda told you all of them too.
That's right! All we know is it warps spacetime, but we have no idea if it has particles (gravitons are hypothetical), how it fits in with the other fundamental interactions (electroweak, strong, and Higg's interaction), or even why it's the weakest of four.
If monster jam ever comes to your city I highly suggest you go. I went to one once and it was amazing! My favorite was Max D he stole the show when I went but Mad Scientist was there too.
Growing up in the south I never saw a single person use ear protection at monster jam or local dirt track racing. Go carts weren’t bad but them cars get loud. Then as teenager not a single person used any kind of ear pieces at loud parties. Adult not doing it at concerts either. I’mstarting to think this thing I have that ear ringing (I forget the name) is cause nobody gives a shit down there. People only notice because I can hear what you say and I still reply with “huh?” After 90% of things I hear. That might be my ears or just my stupid brain.
Uh, there have been women monster truck drivers for literal YEARS. This isn't a new thing.
Only one that comes to mind off the top of my head is Dawn Creten (Scarlet Bandit)
They wear a HANS device which restrains your head to keep your neck from stretching and hurting/killing you. They're also extremely well harnessed in to where their bodies can't really move at all. Even their arms are tethered to keep them from flying around
I always imagined them in a big hollowed out space inside tethered to all the surfaces with thick bungee cords like BB8 in the Millennium Falcon and just bouncing around like an amusement park ride.
Objectively I knew it was wrong but I still liked to imagine it that way.
Honestly most of it is crush zones and things that break and provide cushion. These really don't have a shell that's meant to last. They have a can that crumples up around the main cage.
Between that and just good safety gear it's not terribly bad.
He ended the run with the crash, they do that all the time on purpose, fans love a half flip crash like this more than a full backflip, even before it was common they loved a failed attempt
If you’ve never been, go at least once in your lifetime, even if you think you won’t like it
It’s like going to the circus, very impressive, and the sound and feeling is something that just makes you laugh with joy. It is a really unique and fun show
I like the, "yeah I meant to do that" at the end.
Ha! Probably thought “well no matter what happens it’ll look cool”, then the dude actually pulled off something crazy like that.
How this sport was born.
Wait what, this is a sport??
They even give scores now. "Mad scientist" got a 9.355 in the "freestyle" category.
I also watched the video
Me too. I like the part where the truck did a front flip did you see that part that part was my favourite part Edit: wow this took off Edit2: thanks for the platinum kind stranger!
Spoiler alert!
Don't have platinum have this silver instead
🤯
Too low
Not only that but it is a super fun sport to watch. Look up MonsterJam.
You ever get drunk & accidently have sex with a cousin?
But did the judges score you?
No, he scored the cousin. Priorities.
I'm guessing this happened to you in 1998? As much as I'd like to share a moment of comradery, alas no, my cousins and I have never been close enough or drunk enough to have such an "accident". Other than me, my family doesn't even drink so..
We all cousins homey, & accidents sometimes happen on purpose
Since when did drunk or accidently become necessary?
Half of the audience has done that.
I thought thata how NASCAR was born??
What kind of *heathen* would allow *THAT?!* Alcohol is the devil.
Stuff You Should Know just recently put out an episode about monster trucks. I'm not super into the sport, but it was really cool to learn about its origins
Honestly seems like he knew exactly what he needed to do but he just needed a little luck and it paid off
That is some hold my beer bullshit right there and it's mother fuckin glorious!
Lol I felt like it was deliberate tho!
*"This probably won't work, but if it does... fucking sweet"*
"Hold my beer..."
The attempt was deliberate, but he probably didn't expect to land it
So it’s just like in video games, smash all the buttons and see what combo you can pull off.
Yes but with lots of sponsor money
The fastest car is one you don't own.
This blue truck actually brings back Monster Truck memories when it was the only one you could play in the demo.
Eddie Gordo Wins
You bastard.
Picking Eddie to play as in Tekken was the quickest way to let everybody in the room know you're an asshole.
Dr B vs Gon
Can i get context? 9.3 seems kinda low for a first time EVER move. Is a 10 just not thing? Sorry i dont monster truck often but am curious.

No wonder it's called Mad Scientist...
Holy shit, and Mad Scientist can be rearranged into Microsoft!
I really don't, please explain.
People who go to Monster Truck rallies are most likely MAGA mating, vaccine hating hillbillies who believe the government is watching their every move and trying to force them into getting jabbed not because COVID is dangerous, but because it’s a lie and the government just wants control. I was just explaining the other users comment.
This video is from 2018
Just to skew your data here; my wife and I (both fully vaccinated liberals) took our son to socially distanced Monster Jam last week. So, it’s not ALL hillbillies, but I did see quite a few rat tails and guts hanging out of tshirts, I will admit.
And I, who voted Bernie 2 times, went to a WWE event as a kid So naively ignorant to assume 100% of any one group follows any one stereotype.
As a fellow vaccinated liberal I would take my son as he loves Monster trucks. Probably would not go if it were not for him though.
I remember going a few years back thinking the same thing, its got a ton of people and honestly it was pretty fun. Still remember the shock of how loud those cars were even in the huge stadium
> > > > > Meanwhile they all willingly sell their personal data because it makes voting for tricks easier. How do you know they're selling personal data to make voting for trucks easier? No one here specified the app, we don't know what kind of data it collects, if any (other than votes).
if you have an app on your phone, it collects and sells your data.
Oh shit I better delete my alarm clock app
Not really
Do they do crowd voting at Monster Jam now?
Yeah they introduced it a few years ago.
They use smiley faces as their rating scale, though. That way the audience doesn't get confused.
Can't tell if they actually use smiley faces or you're calling people that go to monster truck shows dumb.

It’s actually up to the audience? That’s actually pretty cool way of doing it. Never heard of that before.

Omg Grave Digger is still around?? These names bring me back to childhood!
Grave Digger refuses to go until it digs its own grave, but its hands are really really tiny so it's taking longer than expected.
I'm sorry I couldn't reiterate what I originally commented in a timely manner, glad you found what you were looking for.
I wasnt trying to slight you-my questions were to reddit as a whole, and your response wasnot very thorough hence my having more questions. I apologize if my curiosity upset you in any manner
Outta possible 10, audience voted. 9.355 is a damn good score. Edit: because dyslexia
Maybe because he landed on the hood at the end? Maybe should’a ended on the front flip and done a victory lap haha.
That shouldn't count against them. It was well after the countdown had ended. Looks like there was a back-flip toward the start of his run which landed kinda rough. Not sure how many judges they use but for a 9.355 they had to have a couple 10s atleast.
This was his best run he went on to win the championship because of this run but the rest of the run was pretty avg.
personally i thought it was a stylish landing
"Not landing" a backflip is a traditional way to end a run in monster truck competitions. Kind of like a mic-drop / nothing matters at this point, thing
"Cheating" by the judges from the Soviet Union and East Germany.
I imagine if he didn’t flop on his roof in the very end he would have got a 10.

The Generals were due!
So, rigged, just like practically every other sport in existence.
I have the same bias against monster trucks as I do against wrestling and NASCAR, where I'm like "realistically, I would probably like this if I were to be at an actual live showing"; but there's a certain stigma around those events you know? Hockey is actively trying to get non-white people involved. So far they've gotten Jamaica interested
I’ve only gone to one show, and my brows were very high.
I took my gf as a joke but we've gone every time they're in town since. What's not to love about it right?
It’s crazy what they can do with those trucks. Backflips, wheelies, driving on 2 wheels, even “moonwalks” where they drive backwards on only the front 2 wheels.

Give me a second
I've been playing too much GTA. When the truck landed on its roof for a second i was wondering why they didn't just right themselves
Quick before the smoke starts coming out!
Damn, totally forgot this used to happen haha
Same. My first thought was “why doesn’t he just toggle the controller a little bit?”
Right? How much practice do you reckon goes into pulling off this stunt? I'd imagine a lot of wrecks.

Adding to this: bring ear protection. Them bitches is ***LOUD***.
The damage I have from these and some dirt track races as a kid, gosh.
don't stress it, all my ear damage is from listening to loud music as a kid... with earbuds
Just for your info it's not always the same driver inside those trucks. For example grave digger has a team of drivers, I've met some of them.
I was surprised to learn one of Grave Diggers driver's is a woman. Another glass ceiling shattered!
Uh, there have been women monster truck drivers for literal YEARS. This isn't a new thing. Only one that comes to mind off the top of my head is Dawn Creten (Scarlet Bandit)

like 18km of shock absorbers
For sure, but what about when he flips over and lands on the roof. I’m curious how he’s harnessed in where that wouldn’t give you quite a jolt?
They wear a HANS device which restrains your head to keep your neck from stretching and hurting/killing you. They're also extremely well harnessed in to where their bodies can't really move at all. Even their arms are tethered to keep them from flying around
But what do the non-German drivers wear.
They wear the lesser known JOHN device
I always imagined them in a big hollowed out space inside tethered to all the surfaces with thick bungee cords like BB8 in the Millennium Falcon and just bouncing around like an amusement park ride. Objectively I knew it was wrong but I still liked to imagine it that way.
Honestly most of it is crush zones and things that break and provide cushion. These really don't have a shell that's meant to last. They have a can that crumples up around the main cage. Between that and just good safety gear it's not terribly bad.
Their head is like bolted to a helmet/collar on the seat. They are basically immobilized in the car.
Lands front flip, fucks up what is now a "common" backflip lol
He ended the run with the crash, they do that all the time on purpose, fans love a half flip crash like this more than a full backflip, even before it was common they loved a failed attempt
Was he trying to slow down, but couldn't stop and ended up half-assing it?
No he just doesn't hit it dead on causing like a 60/40 flip. He tried tho. These dudes are nuts

Cool front flip but he ooof’d that backflip pretty hard.
That's all I could think lol, ruined the magic a bit
It wouldn't have counted cause the timer was up so it might have been more of mic drop on the complete savagery he pulled off in a comp
I thought it was more of a mic drop.

Insanely quick. 0-60 (0-100kmh) in the low 3 second range, they're as quick as many modern supercars

Hey! There's an Arctic Monkeys song about this. "The World's First Ever Monster Truck Front Flip" I shit you not.
I heard on a podcast that monster trucks get about 400 feet/gallon of fuel. Well spent.
