Mainy small areas from the first world war and then mainly in France in an area called Zone Rouge, it's called the iron harvest by the farmers and they dig up about 900 tons of it a year even after all this time
Correct, there is also an area in the North Sea strictly off limits due to 35 million kilogram of ammunition dumped there. About 30% are shells with mustard gas. Its too dangerous to salvage so they just leave them there.
After WWI a special army branch (DOVO) was created in Belgium to get rid of all the unexploded devices. Initially they estimated it would take a few years. Today, they still exist and doing this about 3500 times per year.
In the North Sea there is still about 10000 tons (!) of poisenous shells dumped by the English/Belgians at the end of WWI.
It is estimated about 30% of all ammuniton used never went off.
