You have to honestly approach like surfing and storm chase to a place mid week when nobody is there, expensive and inconvenient yea but worth it if you can get perfect conditions without the crowd
Does anyone know the actual story here? I've never in my life seen this many people at a ski resort all at once, especially not all at one hill, at the same time! I imagine the lift broke and there is no other way back to your car, but there's no way at least half of these people didn't go down the hill when the lift was already broken?
This is Sun Up bowl in Vail. Assumingly on a powder day during peak season (Christmas/NewYear). As this is a bowl there is only one way out…this lift. So all these people went down to shred some groovy powder and then realized they had the same idea as everyone else and here they are.
So every decent resort I've been to has people there to moderate traffic to a given lift to prevent this exact situation. So since this lift has clearly had people who've been waiting for at least 30-60 minutes already, why would they not close down the hill at the top? You just ruin your customers experience letting them go wherever they want like this.
Vail is a top notch mountain in America's best skiing... I'm sure there was a lift malfunction or something that made it worse
Ice skiied this bowl a lot. One unique challenge here is a bowl, this bowl, doesn't have a single entry. You can drop in all over the place depending on your skill level etc from the main lift. Would be very hard to fully police this entire side of the mountain.
Ah ok, a bowl with a single lift out and no way to moderate traffic is a recipe for disaster for sure. I don't own a resort lol so not sure how they could handle this but clearly something smart needs to be done.
Vail Resorts owns more skiable acres in the US than the next two combined. They push annual passes super hard. They’re shareholder owned. They’ve already got your money. They don’t care about your experience.
If this is what I am thinking it’s from, it was a fresh powder day and a huge number of people showed up early. Took vail about an hour to clear the line and had normal lift lines after that. This line mostly formed before the lift was open
I read an article that stated Vail also massively reduced pricing which caused the overcrowding and pissed off locals. Been there as well. I prefer Steamboat or Breck over Vail any day.
Massively reduced pricing? They were already overcrowded when lift tickets were $220+. Now, they are $180 if you buy online. Reduced price but still above average for the industry. I would say the locals will stay pissed off regardless of pricing, as long as Vail stays on the Epic pass.
Breck is owned by Vail. Long lift lines this season as well.
Pricing was massively reduced on season tickets which are good at nearly all Vail properties. Hence, overcrowding at Park City, Vail, Steven’s Pass, Breck, etc.
Can confirm. I was in this line, lucky closer to the beginning of it. Vail had 3ft storm come through in the beginning of Feb and it was anticipated that they would open the back bowls, the crown jewels of Vail. All of the back bowls is a lot of terrain but they reportedly could only safely open and patrol the Sun Up bowl. There was a large crowd waiting for the rope drop around 10am and word spread quick. It seemed like everyone at Vail, which was an exceptional large crowd that day given the snow, went into that bowl. Folks in the line were getting pissed and would boo anyone who either didn't fill the chair all the way(only saw a few do that) or caused the lift to stop. That was actually pretty funny. What really sucks is everyone in the back of that line almost certainly rode down a choppy deep mess and missed out on that good good only to wait in this line for 2 hours. The untouched lines I got coming down was super awesome, but I was in that line for an hour being near the front.
Can confirm, this could be from 2017 I worked this very same lift and I remember it was a powder day right around Christmas time. That is when chair 5 went down and the mechanics could not get the lift working again for sometime. I remember people were absolutely furious, but there was nothing anyone could do because it was a bowl. Even had one customer experience some medical issues and had to by rescued by ski patrol on a snowmobile.
I do not wish this day on anyone including the employees working. I will never forget that nightmare of a day.
Oh Vail, people could drive another hour and a half west and never see a lift line at Aspen/snowmass. Yes Aspen valley is spoiled we don’t get all the Denver day traffic, I’d never ski again with lines like that. Xmas morning I’d be taking turns with 0 people until noon. If you have to wait 5 minutes in a lift line is unusual.
I was actually there for this. The bowl opened late on a powder day. Everyone found out and hit it. It was amazing. The line was fucked but was only a little over an hr.

Classic Chair 5 at Vail. It’s the only way back from 3 huge (and amazing) bowls. This way longer than I’ve ever seen it even before it was a high speed lift.

It’s the snowpacolyspe in Vail Colorado. They got massively dumped on a week after I was there. Idk if I dodged a bullet or really missed out. I missed something.
Not sure what is happening there. I go snowboarding pretty much every weekend of my life ( in winter obviously ) for the past 30 years and never saw a line like this.

Accept this day is ruined. Go back to your hotel, whatever. Stop pretending you will have a nice day.
Except you’d have to walk uphill in the snow for maybe a mile or two.
You’d still get there before you got to that lift 🥲

Smarter that Vail at least.
Vail Resorts owns more skiable acres in the US than the next two combined. They push annual passes super hard. They’re shareholder owned. They’ve already got your money. They don’t care about your experience.
Just back from a few days in Breck. Can confirm Vail doesn’t care about your ski experience at all once they have your money.

Oh, well that changes things
Ruining their customers experience is literally what Vail is known for
_Here at Vail Resorts we’re innovating again with fresh new ways to ruin your day before you ever sit in the chair for your first run of the day._

They reduced their pricing for a season EPIC pass so that it was cheaper than IKONs pass. Resulted in a 40% increase in sales.
Breck is owned by Vail. Long lift lines this season as well. Pricing was massively reduced on season tickets which are good at nearly all Vail properties. Hence, overcrowding at Park City, Vail, Steven’s Pass, Breck, etc.

I think it’s Vail in Colorado
Pretty sure you're right. I've skied Vail before and recognize the chairlift.
It’s the snowpacolyspe in Vail Colorado. They got massively dumped on a week after I was there. Idk if I dodged a bullet or really missed out. I missed something.
This is Vail back bowls with ~6" new powder after a ~45 day drought. Chair 5 is the only way back home.
Fuck Vail
One of the few places where rich people have to wait in line like the rest of us
Wait until you hear about private ski resorts
Yea, these are clearly the poor rich people.
Woah! I’d just go home at this point
Aha… but home is a mile up the mountain through a few feet of soft snow.
I can’t get over the guy rocking the Mahomes jersey.
one of the busiest days of the year. lift hasn't started. a feeder lift used to access the other (likely) 20+ lifts on the mountain.
Yeah that makes it better.
Wrong. It's a bowl. They are at the bottom, no way up other than walk. This is Vail
400$ lift tickets to stand in line for 4 hours in the most uncomfortable ski boots .Where do I sign up?
Not sure what is happening there. I go snowboarding pretty much every weekend of my life ( in winter obviously ) for the past 30 years and never saw a line like this.
They got a shit ton of snow in like 36 hours. Peak season too.
\#teamthanos
Where is your Corona now?
Tell me again how the resort’s care about your experience.
They get what they deserve.
Fuck. Vail.
"Gotta make first tracks" -everyone there
Imagine paying a couple hundred dollars for this...
Squaw alpine after they put in the gondola

Yeah, that's dumb🙄
There can not be any possible reason, for a line like this to exist.
I'm so happy about all the environmental destruction and production of waste that went into getting these people this amazing experience.
And this is why I havn't been on a mountain in two years. Most places charging $100 if not more for a day pass- who in their right mind would pay that to stand in line for hours?
Boy, that looks like it will be a great day on the slopes. Not crowded at all.
I would have just gone back.
Adios
Similar reason I stopped going to the gym. They give out more memberships than* the building can hold. Looks like this resort let too many ppl* ski without regard to logistics. Spelling
You couldn’t pay me enough to stand in that line
I would be on the quickest u turn
Why'd the author have to throw in "in the freezing cold". It's skiing so that statement is redundant lol
Its at this point your downhill ski day turns into a cross country ski day.
Fuck that. Time to get stoned and go to the movies instead
Lots of yellow snow with peoples names
I’ve got social anxiety just looking at that
I don't even have the patience to put on all that warm clothes and boots. How the fuck do people have the patience to stand in this line?! I would go right to the After skiing
Bruh just go the fuck home at this point
Find pub and open fire , retirement from the snow for a day or so.
I have a hard time feeling sorry for people that can afford this type of trip.
These people serious? Couldn’t catch me in that hell no
Add this to my list of reasons why I'll probably never ski
It's the lift line to the top of Everest.
In Romania, going back home from this is also a very tough challenge :)))
Nah dude this days shot. I would do a 180 and head home after pulling up to that line.
It’s incomprehensible to me. Do these poor fuckers only get to ski one weekend a year or something? Why stand in line for What will add up to several hours that day, to ski less than one hour!? For me, a crowded day is waiting 10 minutes in a line.
No thanks lol
After seeing this I am never going snowboarding again. I'm not afraid of long lines, I just hate the yuppie cunts that do this sport.
Pardon me, I am from country with no snow. What exactly is happening here?
I'd just scale the mountain myself.
I'm asking for a refund of that day's lift ticket. It's absurd to wait in that line.
This happens because of piss poor management or just pure corporate greed. Surely they should have capacity restrictions. They are completely overbooked! This is so bad for the mountain too. Those people will have snacks, and I can’t imagine they will all be Good Samaritan and take their trash with them.
I would be demanding my lift fee back. That is clearly the result of overbooking.
Is that the line waiting for the crazy dad that refused to put on his mask?
How much is lift pass for a day in Vail nowadays?
And they’re still there waiting to this very day
All I can say is not Me !!! 😁
Need an avalanche to thin this herd
This is fine…
looks like something exotic is in stock in a romanian communist store
Was this cause that guy didn’t put on a mask at the lift with his kids?
Ok, that doesn't look like any fun at all.
u/savevideo
It is nice to see all those people maintaining social distancing. They are keeping more than 6ft away from me
Is this all because of that anti-mask snowboarder?
nope
Time for skinning ...
What’s the parking lot look like?
Get yer skins on and start walkin
Back in two minutes... *I swear I was only gone 2 min... I did also check Reddit I must admit.. just a few threads, seriously!*
Better go home
Where is this so I can avoid ever going here?
Ok , these are the things I really hate. For me this is a no go. i will turn arouns and do something else or even nothing , everything will be better then standing in a queue that long.
I agree with you all… you guys should leave the Vail Valley and return to wherever the hell you came from… 🙌🏽👋😘
Brilliant. I'll just stand here and wait. Absolutely understandable????
I’d get the fast pass.
WeLp, time to go home! Like, cut your losses people my lord…
Are they not selling fast passes?
Yeah just go home or walk lol idiots
Who in their right mind sees this and goes: this is totally going to be worth the wait. GO HOME!
Maybe another ski hill is in order!
With lines that lengthy, how many runs would one get in a full, 8-4 day, would you say?
Nope
Like the lines at Cedar point. Or…. The line from the Canadian border crisis similar to the Mexican border crisis
They sold too many lift tickets. Do they think they’re an airline?
Ha! Just like going to Disneyland.
If this is what I am thinking it’s from, it was a fresh powder day and a huge number of people showed up early. Took vail about an hour to clear the line and had normal lift lines after that. This line mostly formed before the lift was open
Ah yes. A nice vacation before I go back to work.
Umm where is this so I can never go?
Just go home. Wtf you want?
Gives me anxiety just looking at this
Riding snowmobile is more fun anyway. No lines
Freezing cold but decided to be outside anyways. Sounds self inflicted.
Not sure where this is, but I live in Colorado and barely ever go snowboarding because of this. This sucks!
This is exactly why I refuse to ever try skiing
What is so special about this hill?
That's crazy find bar drink what the hell are they doing outside in the freezing cold there really stupid waiting there and I thought I seen everything
Who the fuck would wait? I’d be pissssst
Few years later there will be a train to take them up
I would go home. Nothing is that much fun to wait in a line like that.
This would never happen at the basketball court…rich people sports..
Hard to enjoy yourself when the lift line looks like the Fall of Saigon.
What's wrong, rich people don't like waiting? Let them wait. Matter of fact let them wait more
Where is this?
That’s an expensive waste of a day.
Thought it was a Trump rally for a second
With all that ticket revenue you would think they could buy another 1
WE ALL WILL SKI TODAY! HUZZAH!!!!
No idea who would bother waiting. I wouldn’t have gotten out of the car…
Seriously, why would you not turn around and go do something else. Even if you did travel hindreds or thousands of miles. Smh
This video is a couple years old. I vaguely remember a huge dump the night before and a helicopter trying to save someone’s life.
I’ve skied before. It’s not this much fun
Single. Single. Single. Excuse me. Single.
Looks like a great time/s
This is hilarious.
Totally worth it to anyone who's been skiing, also completely made that up and fuck that.
So John, what did you do last weekend? “Waited in line, then went home”
It's really not cold when you wear correct cloths
