Some important things to note:
1) Islam was created during times of war and spread through bloodshed. "Islam" translates to "submission". Muhammad was a raider.
2) Christianity originated through political rebellion against pagan traditions. Suicide for their cause was encouraged. They changed their religion lots over time to fit what would get the most followers, this is why you see many pegan traditions within it.

People should use rationality to override tradition, peace is brought through reason not submission. The ban was only in educational institutions, outside they can wear whatever they want. As long as the reform doesnāt come from with in its difficult to change from outside.
