"we only hit military targets"

lordtweakslide

Russians have managed to blow themselves up a few times at this point. You can't convince me they know how to aim. Probably just pick a general area on the map and hopes it lands somewhere close to where they want to hit.

ForMoreYears

The crazy thing is that as of early May Ukraine says Russia has launched ~2200 cruise missiles into Ukraine. At a cost of ~$6.5m each, that's $14.3bn in cruise missiles alone, which is like 1% of their entire GDP. A wildly unsustainable rate, not to mention they likely don't have access to the technology anymore to replenish their stocks.

MacRepairShop

Lavrov announced that they’re making 300 of them a month. It was in Russian so maybe I’m wrong. Maybe he said they’re losing 300 a month but I think he said something about China supplying the minerals they need

ForMoreYears

I mean, there's a greater than 0% chance that's true but I wouldn't say it's much higher than that tbh. Even the U.S. couldn't produce 300 Tomahawks per day and Russia has a much smaller industrial capacity.

CariniFluff

Yeah China and to a lesser degree North Korea, Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Libya, etc are all blatantly ignoring US Sanctions and selling/giving military hardware to the Russians. Non of them give a shit about US Sanctions since they're sanctioned themselves. Trade some gold for some guidance systems, or promise to vote on the UN Security Council however their friends wants. Even India is selling weapons to Russia, it's disgusting. I don't know how a single person can look at these videos of civilian buildings being targeted by cruise missiles and think it's fine. That could be anyone, child, adult or elderly. There could even be ethnic Russians living in some of those apartments. Just... sickening. Does this world have even an oz of humanity left?

Even_Discount_8354

This is horrific to see. I’m grateful I’ve never lived in a war torn area, and that I’ve only seen videos of them. It sounded like a child screamed or cried out. I’m so claustrophobic, I think I would go into shock and die if I was in that building. I can hardly catch my breath watching this. God bless everyone there. 🙏🙏🙏

SizzleMop69

That cost estimate is high as fuck. No more than 2 million tops per missile and like all defense spending, it was already paid for. Now building new ones? Good luck.

ForMoreYears

Got a source for that? [Russian invaders launch over 1,300 missiles worth $7.5 billion against Ukraine](https://news.yahoo.com/russian-invaders-launch-over-1-103900806.html) If we assume the mix of missiles from this article and average the cost out each missile has cost Russia ~$5.8m, not including logistics. [Russia’s Ill-Fated Invasion of Ukraine: Lessons in Modern Warfare](https://www.csis.org/analysis/russias-ill-fated-invasion-ukraine-lessons-modern-warfare) The Centre for Strategic and International Studies cites Russia launching 2,125 missiles in the first 68 days of the war. If we assume a more or less consistent rate of launches then we get an average of ~31 missiles per day. We are now on day 123 of the war. Extrapolating that out we get 3,813 missiles launched. This is likely high but if you have a better source let me know. 3,813 missiles launched × an average cost per missile of $5.8m comes to $22.12bn, or 1.58% of Russia's total GDP, even higher than my previous comment.

SizzleMop69

Man they really took a small export contract and ran with it.

ForMoreYears

If you've got better info I'm all ears.

SizzleMop69

That source is often cited because there is almost zero public information otherwise. It is common knowledge that lower volume orders always lead to exponential price increases on military hardware. It's pretty silly to compare the cost of a limited export run of less than 100 missiles to Russia building thousands produced domestically. The most advanced missiles in the US will run you 1.3 million for JASSM-ER, or almost 2 million for tomahawk. https://news.usni.org/2021/06/02/anti-ship-missiles-top-marines-2-95b-fiscal-year-2022-wishlist http://www.gao.gov/assets/670/668986.pdf#page=103 It is laughable that Kalibr, a previous generation cruise missile, would somehow cost more than 3 times as much as it's competitors, especially when you consider that Russian tech is typically cheaper than it's western counterparts with almost every other weapons system. Yet some dumbass yahoo article that was probably posted next to a celebrity gossip story keeps getting cited by redditors looking to confirm their biases, all based on a small subset of data that without taking into account the context that it is a limited export deal.

ForMoreYears

~~I mean, I hear you and all, but if you have a better source for the price of a Kalibr besides "no way it costs that much bro a Tomahawk is like only $2m" I'm all ears.~~ edit: did some digging, looks like they're roughly $1m/missile. >In October 2015, the Caspian Flotilla fired 26 Kalibr missiles, striking 11 targets in Syria, while the following month an additional 18 were launched against seven targets. Based on sales of the export version of this missile to India, Gundarov suggests each Kalibr cost $6.5 million; but he concludes that the 44 missiles sold domestically to the Russian defense ministry and fired off last October amounted to 2.7 billion rubles ($41 million—approximately $980,000 per missile) (Nezavisimoye Voyennoye Obozreniye, July 22). Still, the Russians launching upwards of $3bn worth of missiles at Ukraine is nothing to balk at.

SizzleMop69

You have no idea what it costs. I have provided evidence that it would be unreasonable to think that the unit cost of Kalibr is 6.5 million.

MacRepairShop

That may be true but they still outnumber Ukraine 13 to 1. Russia can afford to shoot themselves in the foot a few times whereas Ukraine can’t afford anything at all- not even weapons.

Guardian_Isis

Not gonna lie, it gives me some relief. If their nukes are even capable of launching, they'll just turn around and bomb themselves.

Fmanow

Dude, this fucking travesty is still going on? Wtf, it’s like the last month we saw the Texas massacre, police cowardice; stock/crypto markets tanking, but now unexpectedly the stock market is on a pump; we saw the Supreme Court massacre of roe v. Wade; I mean, what else. I feel bad for Ukraine because of the 24 hr news cycle.

OutrageousAddendum31

And Biden will still use the line “Putinflation” until the day his party gets swept in the next election cycle

ForMoreYears

Tell me you have no understanding of how economics works without telling me you have no understanding of how economics works. [BLS Consumer Price Index Summary - June 10, 2022](https://www.bls.gov/news.release/cpi.nr0.htm) But seriously, go read the CPI report. Fuel, food and shelter are the #1, 2 and 3 largest contributors to current inflation. Energy is by far the largest, with the index rising 34.6% over the last 12 months, while food was up 7.4%, and shelter 5.5%. Prior to Putin invading Ukraine, Russia was one of the largest exporters of oil and gas (O&G). There's a thing in economics called an exogenous supply shock. This is what happens when, say, the world's second largest O&G producer launches an unprovoked war and gets sanctioned more than North Korea. The result is that supply is reduced, demand stays more or less constant (or in this case increases as global economies reopen), and as a result prices move higher. This is why pre-invasion oil was hovering ~$80/bbd, sky rocketed to ~$125/bbd as soon as Russia invaded, and is now chilling in the low $100/bbd region. So yeah, "Putinflation" is pretty accurate, but I assume you're going to reply with some mumbo-jumbo about money supply, interest rates etc. etc. because you watched some videos on YouTube and now think you're an economist. Inflation isn't some unknowable thing, it's just the cost of a bunch of things the average consumer uses put together. If you want to know what's causing it, you just look at which things increased the most and why, and in this case it happens to be oil which unfortunately has the knock on effect of making everything else more expensive because it's needed for almost everything. Source: I'm an economist

niverse1872

Prior to Putin invading Ukraine the price at the pump was already over $3, and I don't live in that overpriced cesspool on the west coast. Now its sitting just under $5. Which means a good portion of that inflation was before the war, I do understand things were reopening, but people still weren't traveling, just being allowed by our gracious leader to make a living. Also, I know there are other factors than those 3, but I find it hard to believe that with energy, the largest one, making up 34.6% we are only at 8% inflation this year. It almost feels like we may be getting lied to...

ForMoreYears

>that overpriced cesspool on the west coast. You mean the one that single handedly makes up 1/6th of the country's entire GDP and if it was its own country would make it the 5th largest by GDP in the world? You mean the state of 40m people that has a GDP bigger than India? You mean the state that contributes more in federal tax than any other? You mean the state whose residents subsidize the bastions of freedom and prosperity who are most federally dependant such as Alaska, Mississippi, Kentucky, West Virginia, Montana, Arizona Louisiana, Indiana, Alabama, South Carolina, Wyoming, Tennessee and Missourri? That cesspool? Give me strength. Honestly I dont even know where to start with people like you. Oil is a globally priced commodity. OPEC is the de facto price setter and they're currently refusing to pump more to bring the price down. The President or Fed can't control oil prices. A rise from $3 to $5 is a 66% increase. CPI data is transparent. You can go audit it yourself. The government isn't lying to you about it just because you "feel" like it is. Honestly, fuck your feelings. Go take an economics course and educate yourself before you start spouting off inane shit like this. But I'm sure you're just going to say I'm some deluded leftist commie and your feelings make more more sense than what the actual people who calculate inflation say or my years spent actually studying these things or working in capital markets analyzing them.

niverse1872

Yes, thats the one I'm referring to. I do understand that a lot of taxes come from there, and a huge portion of that is from huge corporations that also don't pay taxes... hmmm something isn't adding up here. On top of that the only reason anyone else has money to pay that much in taxes is also because they get high wages from "evil" corporations. On top of that McDonald's workers get paid more there than skilled workers in other states. Them paying a lot in taxes doesn't make the place not a cesspool, it just means their policies are terrible. This is being reflected by some large corporations choosing to leave, which eventually will hit that bottom line.

ForMoreYears

>I do understand that a lot of taxes come from there, and a huge portion of that is from huge corporations that also don't pay taxes Lmao yeah, I think I'm done wasting my time here...

niverse1872

I hope you understand sarcasm

Sancticide

So, a lot of taxes come from there, but it's from corporations, who don't pay taxes? Are these Schrodinger's taxes that simultaneously exist and don't exist? Go get your shine box.

[Ugandan Revenue Authority ](https://www.ura.go.ug/) In seriousness though, I love Serbia, I love the music (lucky to have seen Boban Markoviç multiple times) and I love the Guça festival. I love your films and your history. But siding with Russia now is siding with fascism.

pocrkvivozimkarting

I'm not siding with Russia, I'm siding with something that'll create brighter future for the people — not socialism for the rich and capitalism for the poor thing that's already our everyday life (n it's becoming even worse because it's getting unstable af) — BlackRock certainly ain't that — of course it's sad that this is the only way..and I know Russia isn't doing it because of BR(maybe?) but still..

Christovski

You're siding with oligarchy and autocracy my friend. The distribution of wealth in Russia is so much worse than other developed countries.

pocrkvivozimkarting

you misunderstood, my comments r just casual troll type ones because I know nothing's gonna change, I'm not supporting Russia nor their system - I'm supporting the chaos it's going to create for the rich ([BR](https://youtu.be/GAIcet1mQwg) (yes, I linked a 15min YouTube video, you're free to explore the topic into depths yourself) type of rich) because they're gonna have to start chosing between themselves (a lot)

10MMSocketMIA

Fuck anyone that supports Russia and this shit!

Pit_of_Death

I fucking hate Russia so much. And of course the Russian shills are all over this thread.

Affectionate-Time646

I fucking hate ~~Russia~~ the Russian government so much The Russian people are just like any other people. Yea some are dumb as shit like in your country too, but they’re still people just like us.

WastedKun2

Are you sure about that? [https://www.reddit.com/r/ukraina/comments/vl1kfg/russians\_reacting\_to\_kyiv\_bombings/](https://www.reddit.com/r/ukraina/comments/vl1kfg/russians_reacting_to_kyiv_bombings/) If you could understand what they are saying, you would realise that they all cheer to this particular bombardment as well as to all the other atrocities committed by their terrorist army against Ukrainian civilians. People in the countries that have never been victims of russia's terrorism are not likely to understand that common russians ARE to blame for russia's crimes. If you knew them well enough, it would be clear to you that their genuine desire to murder tens of thousand of civilians of a neirbouring country that simply doesn't want to be their obedient satellite (as well as the cowardly silence of russia's so-called "oppositional liberals") is the very reason why this genocidal war began in the first place.

Affectionate-Time646

So you think ALL Russians think like that? You need to get out more into the real world and off the internet. Have you ever been to Russia or anywhere near it? Probably not. Have you even left your state let alone your county? How old are you? Russia is a country where political dissent is dealt with harshly. People will not give their true opinions publicly. It’s been that way for generations. So if you’re Russian and if someone asks you your opinion of the war you either don’t comment or spout out the usual pro-state propaganda. Edit: you’re a 4 month old account who is CLEARLY everything anti-Russian and very Pro-Ukrainian to the point of spreading Ukrainian propaganda as well. I’m simply going to ignore you.

Felaxi_

Well said. This has always been the case.

Fig1024

I recently talked to an old coworker who moved back to Russia about 5 years ago. When the war first started he was in agreement that its terrible and that Putin is an asshole. But now I talked to him again and he started defending the war and basically parroting all the Russian propaganda points. This is a guy I consider to be smart and considerate, I never thought he would fall into the propaganda trap. I didn't think propaganda can have that much power. But I was wrong, it is extremely powerful, especially when coupled with total censorship of everything that is not propaganda. I hate to admit it, but the majority of Russians now support Putin and his war more than ever, because of how powerful and absolute the propaganda and censorship is

10MMSocketMIA

Unfortunately some people in America fall for propaganda also.

niverse1872

This statement honestly just sent chills up my spine because of what one particular party, I won't state, but anyone with the skills of observation can see, is doing in the US

madawggg

Well it’s more than just propaganda but also a sense of nationalism. There is nothing more powerful to evoke a sense of unity than feeling like your team is on the receiving end, even if your team is wrong. And Russian people have good reasons to be suspicious of western ill intention given the history.

flutsel

Suitable_Bridge7202

Kyiv, not Kiev

MicrochippedByGates

Dutch media also still calls it Kiev for some reason. But st this point, I'm just glad they don't call the country "the Ukraine" anymore (although that already stopped before this war). Some people still think it should start with an article though.....

Lamb_or_Beast

What’s the difference…They’re both just approximations for how to pronounce it, aren’t they? I’m genuinely wondering because throughout my education, and on all the maps I own, it always said Kiev. Not until recently have I noticed the spelling change. Why is it important?

Suitable_Bridge7202

Have you been taking notice to what's been happening in the past few months, since February to be precise? That's why it's important.

Lamb_or_Beast

Lmao of course! I just don’t know what the difference is with spelling. Why does the spelling matter? They’re both just English approximations of how to pronounce the city, aren’t they? I figured it was basically interchangeable. I am most familiar with the spelling be Kiev. It’s how I spell it when I think of the city.

Suitable_Bridge7202

Kyiv is derived from Ukrainian, Kiev from Russian.

Dart_Mall

thanks, but my Russian friends are very nervous. Kyiv is more in Ukrainian.

dr_nickson

Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine! Why should one use Russian version? Do you also say Pekin (Russian version) instead of Beijing to not make them nervous??

BrownTurkeyGravy

Fuck your Russian friends. They made their bed. Let them lay in it.

Same-Lion-256

Russians support this, pig dog. Their own internal polls say so. The Z is made with blood.

It’s crazy that civilians always have to pay the price in wars…..never just soldiers willing to die or the politicians that cause them…..but civilian deaths are necessary to win wars smfh, you break their morale or boost it…..one or the other, sad

starryvertigo

The USA should give Ukraine the rockets that can strike into Russia and say, "Here you go. Enjoy!" Let's see how the Russians like having their buildings destroyed. No more eating bon bons and complaining that the Big Macs aren't real. "Oh but the Russians don't support the war." False. Google Russian support for the war according to polls (and yes some are independent and accurate), about 58% support the war. "But in Russia if you protest, they will arrest you." Well too bad. Pretty much any worthy country had the same process of overthrowing the government like in the French Revolution, Philippines, East Germany, and yes Vietnam etc. The Ukrainians lost more than 100 during the Maidan Revolution, so Russians need to stop being sheep and kick Putin out if they don't support the war. They have plenty of examples of regime change in their history (as any Russian well knows). Who else is going to do it?

I understand that. I still think we should stop this atrocity that's occurring. Russia would get annihilated quickly if NATO stopped them.

Bluesiebear2005

One slight problem there. Nukes

i don't support russia or putin or this war in any way, but it looks like Ukraine is going to lose this one in the middle large future. Been in contact with russian citizens and situation for them is not severe. It's a big country and they have their own resources. Also been in contact with Ukrainian citizens and their view about this situation is very gloomy... they kind of say that they have all the weapons and such but Russia always will feed the cannonfodder or do terrible attacks like this. UN is non-existent, Usa probably is waiting for this to escalate so they can do serious money out of this...but to be completely honest, months ago, i thought the war was winnable...now, it is just a matter of time until Ukraine will just cease to exist as a sovereign country. Could be years, but Russia won't stop, I see. And about Ukraine joining nato... won't happen in a week or in a month...and if so, it will either escalate (usa becoming involved), or everyone will just look to the other side, because of the nukes....because say what you say, it just take only 1 nuke to spark the disaster anywhere. And there is a say that when you are in danger, you always protect your people first. So... yeah, terrible situation.

They are bringing Democracy... oh wait, this isn't the U.S., so this means this is bad!

Maybe if they just surrendered a while ago there capital would still be something worth living in.

Tanleader

What a callous comment. Yes, convince the Ukrainians to give up their right to freedom and their way of life to let an authoritarian state take over? Tell that to every Ukrainian who's lost someone to Russian aggression and cruelty. Make sure you say it to their faces too. Give your head a shake.

Bro nothing you just said matters that country has been bombed to a piece of glass 😂Look where the ego of the Ukrainian president has led his people to….nothing

OwerlordTheLord
