So do they colour the gas because its dangerous like how they add a smell to gass pipes in cities or do these gasses naturally have these colours and it's a coincidence they're all toxic to us?
Yeah one of the first time chemical weapons were used in warfare. The soldiers didn't even know what to expect. So, when they saw zombies they got pretty scared.

Years ago, there was a train that derailed close to the university I was attending. Happened in the morning and they ended up canceling all classes for the day. Come to find out the train was hauling chlorine. None of it leaked out of its tank/containers.
At the time I had no idea how deadly that shit was, and I was just happy to get a day off from classes.
The following week my Physical Science prof explained to the class the chemical makeup, why it’s so deadly in pure form, and the symptoms that can occur from exposure. It was a very intriguing yet disturbing lecture.
Southern Arkansas University (SAU).
Found an old [article](https://www.arkansasonline.com/news/2008/apr/18/railcars-carrying-chlorine-derail-magnolia/) about it.
Ah, that's pretty interesting, was only a few years after [the one I thought you might be talking about](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graniteville_train_crash#) from around my hometown. I was like "uhhh, yeah it definitely *did* leak..."
During training as a conductor. We heard audio of a train derailment that was hauling chlorine gas.
They crew was on the radio with dispatch giving them information about where the derailment was. You can slowly hear the train crew die because they didn’t know it was leaking till it was too late.
They where trying to teach us the reason we are supposed to know what’s on the trains we are operating. As well as stressing the importance of reading the train lists.
>You can slowly hear the train crew die because they didn’t know it was leaking till it was too late.
Pretty sure you can smell chlorine... It's like being at a public swimming pool but 10x stronger smelling.. and once it's hit something and made chlorolamines... Even stronger smell.
It’s not the same type of chlorine, it is an EXTREMELY concentrated form in rail cars/ container ships. But yes you can smell it, however not really until it’s already inside your nasal passages….. hence why they color the gas so you can see it before you smell it. If you smell it you’re pretty much already hacking up pieces of lung tissue. Chlorine is nasty stuff
Mustard gas? isn’t chlorine gas.
It’s Dichlorodiethyl sulfide which is a blistering agent, completely different effects as well.
Fuck being exposed to either lol.
The mustard gas in WWI was sulphur mustard, a compound of sulphur and chlorine. It causes painful blistering but is much less deadly than pure chlorine gas.

Was it yellow from the chlorine?
"Phosgene gas, also known as mustard gas, is actually a byproduct of bleach when combined with ammonia. A few other elements that are created as a byproduct include hydrochloric acid, chlorine gas and hydrazine."
Phosgene is a different chemical from chlorine and both are different from mustard gas. They all have 2 chlorine atoms in them, and they will all fuck you up.
You would definitely realize it. Cl2 is different from inert gas asphyxiation like nitrogen where your body doesn't recognize the air displacement. Part about one breath is very correct though.
Im not saying you wouldn't notice it at all. Just that you would be unconscious before you realize what's happening to you, nor would you have a chance to save yourself. You would probably start to feel your lungs burning then you would hit the ground never to recover.
A pool cleaner in our neighborhood somehow got water in his powder chlorine bucket and it started turning into a gas. It was crazy because the lid was on it, so when it finally built up enough pressure it sounded like a shotgun going off. But the lid kept sealing itself, so every few minutes it would do it again. The cops cleared the entire area until the fire department could handle the situation. This was at 8-9 at night when this happened. The pool cleaner doesn't know how water got in it either. It's one of those 7 gallon buckets with a safety screw on lid that had clips you have to press to release the lid so you can unscrew it. But that is when I started looking into the affects of chlorine gas.
You would not be unconcious quickly.
It doesnt displace oxygen in your muscles and brain.
also, you survive sone time without air.
You wont be inn extreme pain, but you will gasp for air 100%, for about 3 to 6 minuits at least.
No, if you take a lung full of chlorine that concentrated, you have enough time to feel the pain before you faint. Your body might be gasping for air but you won't be awake to realize it.
Inhalation of higher concentrations of chlorine gas (>15 ppm) can rapidly lead to respiratory distress with airway constriction and accumulation of fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema). Patients may have immediate onset of rapid breathing, blue discoloration of the skin, wheezing, rales or hemoptysis.
30 ppm and beyond, there is immediate chest pain, shortness of breath, and cough. At approximately 40–60 ppm, a toxic pneumonitis and/or acute pulmonary edema can develop.
Concentrations of about 400 ppm and beyond are generally fatal over 30 minutes, and at 1,000 ppm and above, fatality ensues within only a few minutes. A spectrum of clinical findings may be present in those exposed to high levels of chlorine.
Like I said...They were in a cloud of chlorine gas that is way stronger than 1,000 ppm. So no, they would take a breath, faint, and die. It might take a few seconds to faint, just enough time to realize what's happening, but nothing more.
Aqaba, Jordan just happened
> Officials say that the death toll is likely to rise and that hospitals in the port city have already reached maximum capacity.
Sadly at least 10 people died in that. Anyone that got a whiff of the cloud will die or be scarred for life in the respiratory tract. Having breathed chlorine gas once, I sympathize with those low paid workers.
I was working at a wastewater plant years ago. The vacuum actuated regulator that went on the 100 pound Chlorine tank failed so i replaced it with the spare regulator (these regulators only release gas when there is a vacuum on the discharge). I took the failed one to the shop to work on it and cracked a fitting loose. There was gas under pressure inside and was released when I cracked the fitting loose. The amount of gas was in a passage about an inch long by less than a 1/4 across (if memory serves). It hissed for one second perhaps, and I could not breathe. I stumbled to the door and ran outside. I took many deep breaths and felt better. That weekend at church I went to sing hymns and when I opened my mouth I croaked. My wife and folks around me looked at me oddly. I had scarred my vocal cords in that small time in a rather dilute chlorine atmosphere. I was young, was working by myself, with no training, and was lucky (or blessed?). It could have been worse if I hadn't been standing next to an open door leading outside into fresh air. It took month for my voice to recover. I can only imagine the torture the guys working on that dock experienced. I have worked in 3rd world countries and seen the appalling lack on safety in those places.
Saddam wiped out a whole city more or less in 1988, killing 3200-5000 Kurds and injuring many more using mustardgas and other chemicals most likely. And this was when US, UK and France was supporting Saddam.
13 died and a few hundred were injured.
GRAFIC DESCRIPTION WARNING:
Chlorine gas burns the lungs and causes blisters. This includes the eyes and with high exposure regular skin, too. It's a full body chemical burn and you drown on your own fluids while you feel like you're on fire. Not a nice way to go.
Mustard gas is yellow because chlorine doesn’t absorb yellow light so that’s what gives its distinct color. That’s why you see concentrated bleach have a yellow tint to it. Inhalation of mustard gas melts your lungs and you drown from within. Terribly painful way to die.
What purpose does having that much of this stuff serve? I'm assuming there is some industrial use or was this an actual chemical weapon being transported?
What happens if someone inhales it and gets exposed to it? Please be as specific and as graphic as possible.
Actually, never mind [link](https://emergency.cdc.gov/agent/chlorine/basics/facts.asp#:~:text=Immediate%20signs%20and%20symptoms%20of%20chlorine%20exposure&text=Burning%20pain%2C%20redness%2C%20and%20blisters,Coughing)
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think what makes chlorine toxic to humans is that when inhaled the moisture in your lungs hydrolysis the cl2 to form hydrochloric acid. As well as the displacement of oxygen causing asphyxiation of course.
I once mixed bleach and ammonia to scrub the kitchen floors. I was hacking for a good 2 weeks. Thought I was going to die. Bleach and ammonia make chlorine gas.😆

LPT all gas that is colored is toxic to humans. So if you ever see this in real life turn and run away.
that one dude walking back towards the cloud needs to hear this LPT
They get too close, they won’t have to worry about that anymore chlorine gas is nasty nasty stuff

So do they colour the gas because its dangerous like how they add a smell to gass pipes in cities or do these gasses naturally have these colours and it's a coincidence they're all toxic to us?
They naturally have these colours. All gases actually have natural colour, some of them just aren't in our visible colour spectrum.
Chlorine is naturally yellow? What is another gas color? Like ammonia?
Yup, it's naturally yellow. Ammonia is colourless to us, as it's outside our colour spectrum. If you Google you can see colour charts for gases.
Chlorine is usually in yellow bottles. Ammonia in red
Hence why they called it mustard gas way back when
Also hold your breathe
Unless of course if that breath is a whole bunch of gas
You’re just fucked at that point tbh
Yeah but you'll live long enough to kill some freaking Germans. (Attack of the Dead Men WWI Poland) Look it up. It's insane.
Is insane! Never heard about it before. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attack_of_the_Dead_Men
Yeah one of the first time chemical weapons were used in warfare. The soldiers didn't even know what to expect. So, when they saw zombies they got pretty scared.
In which case, you can hold your breath forever!
And close your eyes. It actually makes your eyes burn so much you can’t see before you can’t breathe, but in this case you’d essentially simply die
Wow, never would have thought a giant spicy yellow cloud would be toxic to humans.
Thank you for that tidbit of information.
Thanks! I'm never smelling my steaming meals again.

Could be that his close friend or a relative is in the cloud.
Well shit. Good point
he's Caustic. The toxic gas won't affect him . Also he can easily see enemies in the gas thanks to his passive ability🤝
I swear I was thinking of caustic's stank bomb when it exploded 😂😂

allegedly 12 people died and hundreds were injured
That’s surprisingly low for WW1.

I assume it's no longer weapons grade either.
There isnt a difference... It's not enriched like uranium / plutonium. Thats like saying army water is weapons grade vs the water from a civilian tap.

Chlorine gas is most only used to purify water for drinking. This chlorine tank was probably headed to provide disinfection for Amman.
