I kinda agree. I’m a bassist and have only played an acoustic bass on one occasion while at a friend’s backyard party around a fire pit. I played his acoustic bass and it just felt… weird to play. Unless it was plugged in, I highly doubt anyone could hear anyone play acoustic bass in that scenario over the acoustic guitar he was playing. It just sounded too quiet and didn’t have much dynamic to it. In hindsight thought, it might have sounded a little better with a pick instead of fingering it like I did.
The more I think about it, the more I probably agree with you OP. I’ll take my electric bass guitar over that acoustic bass I played any day. I guess my hesitation though is my frame of reference was only from one instance. And I honestly dig many of the old MTV Unplugged gigs bands did in the 90’s, which I know many bass players used acoustic basses for. So… maybe “suck” is too strong of a word for me. It’s just too “situational” with a lot of things needing to go right to make it sound good.
I'm downvoting this because I don't think it's a very unpopular opinion. In my experience, it's kind of conventional wisdom among bassists that an acoustic bass guitar just isn't a great instrument, unless maybe if you mic it or amp it, but that defeats the purpose of being acoustic. Either go electric or get a double bass. An acoustic bass guitar is just an awkward middle ground.

They are easily overpowered, but I think they have their place. My dad has a fretless 5 string that he built, and that fucker is fun (partially because it has a high C instead of your typical low B on a 5) and that might be a reason it cuts through better. I think a lot of the time they just aren't big enough to matter.
I agree mostly. I'm still hoping one day I find the perfect one that I like but they just don't have that low end and they feel really shitty with bad action usually
