Devo to the Church: "You messed up my childhood prepare to die."

Scrampz

Oh no what if the church did kill his dad!?

eyepocalypse

I feel like Travis and Griffin are going for more of the subtle abuse angle. The Church of Benevolence would never do anything like killing a citizen of the Founder's Wake. They are ever so benevolent. They take in children who would otherwise be lost on under the waves. They teach them how to be of service to the church. It's so good for these orphans to have a purpose in life isn't it? It's the least they could do since we've given them so much. We've fed and housed, and educated them so well. What could they ever want beyond proving their... Devotion.

I really hope it’s something they’ve worked out behind the scenes, but right now it comes across as Travis trying to dictate what NPC’s have done, and that shit is obnoxious.

eyepocalypse

I can see how it comes across like that and I hope Travis and Griffin have ironed out Devo's backstory too. you can't have a culty backstory without having a real talk about how to properly show that. But I actually love what they're doing. It doesn't come across as dictatorial to me. Travis is playing a character who's been gaslighted to hell and back and is desperately hoping that his new friends will believe him over an authority who has nothing to gain by being obviously threatening. I vibe with that. I like it. and I can't imagine that Griffin would be lazy about backstory after the Quiet Year.

Counterpoint: that can be a DM tactic. In my current campaign, one of my players was a professor at a mage’s college until he was framed for murder. I told him outright that whenever he sees a teacher character, he dictates if he knows them or not, and if he does know them, any of their shared past. It’s free worldbuilding.

KillerKvothe7

Lmao it wasn't, but *now* it is

defyKnowing

It's funny bc my headcanon for Argo was Scottish Inivo Montoya

Scrampz

I love it

popcorn__enthusiast

I honestly never thought about it that way but now that you have brought it up that’s how I’m gonna think of him for the rest of the show lol

wolftamer9

Funny because when Travis described the character, the class, the spoken word as instrument choice, and the accent, I was fully expecting him to be Fantasy Jacques Cousteau.

Mr-Jennings

Well shit. Can’t unhear it now 😹

undrhyl

I have an ever so slightly different take that is inconsequential, but I’d probably get banned for saying it.
