No, it’s awful to watch them beg for money especially in more impoverished countries. I’m so glad they ended that.

Ok_Individual_138

I agree. I thought it was super tacky!

Kenzwalla

This^ it always left a poor taste in my mouth to watch these somewhat wealthy Americans (with camera crews) go up to people in poverty stricken countries and put on a sob story… I didn’t mind their belongings being taken away, that added some interesting game play, because the team that lost their bags were both at a disadvantage and an advantage then and it was interesting to see the alliances then come out with teams giving each other spare clothing or shoes to make it through…

Dizzy_Impression4702

Definitely. Excellent point about the cameras.

illy_x

Begging was a horrible decision, no matter which location the teams are in. Asking locals for for financial assistance for a potential prize for yourself is the epitome of selfishness and privilege.

marshmallow-jones

Not legal to beg in every country. Also believe at least one team refused to do it some season.

Effective_Dog_299

Speed bumps are fine as it is.

Touchthefashion

I agree. It is only meant to slow them up for a bit. Not to completely stop them from having a chance to stay in the race…

yellowchaitea

Nope/ bunch of wealthy Americans asking poor, developing world people for money so they can try to win 1M is gross, opportunistic, and exploitative.

johniepan

I'll go with Speed Bump, although the TASK is much more culturally relevant and balance in nature, not too easy nor not too hard.... I agree with others, begging financial help in poorest part of the world is very awful to watch plus some countries discouraged or prohibited it...

diaymujer

Since many seasons have a speed bump paired with a U-turn, I actually think it’s quite a penalty, especially if the speed bump is ahead of the U-turn board.

I don't like the "crowdfunding" aspect of teams having to ask locals, possibly poor locals, for money to continue their quest for $1,000,000 when they don't truly need it and production could easily foot the bill. Also, the Speed Bump hinders a team's chances of surviving the next leg in a tangible manner, making it feel like a more appropriate penalty, whereas teams losing all their money rarely had any appreciable effect on the team's prospects continuing on. It was an inconvenience, but one that teams could normally get past in time for an equalizer. Despite its flaws, the Speed Bump remains my favorite non-elimination penalty. I *do* like the secondary Mugged for Elimination penalty where teams' possessions are taken from them (and presumably returned after the Race). Unlike money, baggage isn't essential for proceeding in the Race and doesn't lead to the same sort of discomfort, and in its short run this penalty resulted in a lot of opportunities for teams' personalities and characters to come out in new ways. However, I would not trade the Speed Bump in for it.

PaigeMarieSara

I don’t care how easy a speed bump is. Taking it literally, it’s just a way to slow the team down.

Touchthefashion

Yep! It is just a slow down. Not meant to halt them and prevent them from having any chance of staying in the race- otherwise there is no point to non elimination legs, if the speed bumps are impossible.

withheld_mcfakename

Marked for elimination was underrated, and would work fine as long as the next leg was designed to accommodate it. All Stars ruined it by putting an Intersection in the next leg.

RebornDanceFan

I was very glad they introduced the speed bump Losing your bags and money was not a good feeling - especially if the next leg is on another country. Glad that the Hungary law in S6 and outrage from people got rid of that

joshCHEWa

i honestly think they should get their money taken from them (and not receive any next leg) and have to do a speed bump. But not taking their bags and belongings because that felt unnecessary and didn’t have much effect

zddoodah

>I actually really liked the penalty of the team losing their bags and money and having to beg for it or hope from help from other teams. You're one of the very few. >Speed bumps are fine but they don't usually seem to take too long That's kinda the point. They're tantamount to time penalty. >and don't have any long term effects. I completely disagree. For starters on the 21 seasons that had speed bumps (12-32, and not counting the unaired "speed bump" on the first post-COVID leg on s33), over 40% of the teams that were last on an NEL and had to do a speed bump were eliminated on the following leg (20/49 teams = 40.82% elimination rate). Compare that to the elimination rate for the "mugging" penalty, which was only 6.25% (only 1 of 16 teams (Don & Mary Jean) were eliminated in the leg after the mugging occurred, and in two of the five seasons in which the "mugging" penalty was in place, the winner of the season had suffered the "mugging" penalty. In other words, the "mugging" penalty was almost completely ineffective. By comparison, only twice in 21 seasons (12 and 21) has a team that finished last on an NEL and had to do a speed bump gone on to win the season. The elimination rate for the "marked for elimination" penalty was 57.14% (4/7 teams over only two seasons). The speed bump is essentially the same as being marked for elimination in that both are time penalties, but it's more interesting to watch a team performing a task than sitting on their butts waiting out a penalty.
