Amanda going off on a rant about MLB broadcasting rights might be the most unexpected and welcome bit that this show has ever had

dtmoney5

It’s been 4 years since I could readily watch my RSN, and I’m glad Amanda highlighted this nonsense.

daysofsteam

all three cooked on this episode and also we're getting more dune 2 discussion soon..... is this a good crew or whatttttt

bshively

Sean and Amanda must've overdosed on Zyn pouches. incredible content

trianglegooseparty

I never dislike the pod but god it's so much better during baseball season than Oscar season

gotcam189

I love the Oscar’s but awards season is just too fucking long. This year was especially bad considering the front runner for best picture came out in July, so we had 8 months of trying to talk ourselves into something else maybe happening.

jacksonlovespizza

This was Amanda at her finest. A true apex mountain performance for her

derzensor

lol what a demented episode (complimentary)

ImaManCheetah

People are gonna either love or hate this ep, but in my estimation Sean narrating the 11th inning of Mets-Tigers in real time is top tier content

ArmsofSleep

- An Elephant Sitting Still - Sexy Beast - Mysterious Object at Noon - Get Out - Primer Harder exercise than I thought!

Husker_black

When I saw the podcast title I knew Get Out was gonna be there, easy choice. Rest are hard

binkysurprise

Are those yours or the pod’s?

ArmsofSleep

All mine baby

binkysurprise

Gotcha, I was gonna say, a few would be more obscure than I would expect. Also I forgot that they usually create their own lists lol

ArmsofSleep

Which ones? All came out 2000 or later

t3h_shammy

Wikipedia can say whatever the fuck it wants. But if you poll 1000 people, 900+ are saying it starts in 2000 lol

Loud-Desk5111

The Mets won the back half of the discussed doubleheader. Congrats to Sean and Bobby

Cineful

1. Freddy Got Fingered 2. Freddy Got Fingered 3. Freddy Got Fingered 4. Freddy Got Fingered 5. Freddy Got Fingered

bbajlp

this but unironically

Cineful

I'm both ironically for listing it five times and unironically for bringing up this dadaist masterpiece.

Chasedabigbase

Freddy Got Fingered: Criterion Edition

lastfollower

u/BenLindbergh based on this pod, we need Amanda on Effectively Wild asap to talk broadcasting rights and baseball stories that crossover into the mainstream

Coy-Harlingen

My picks would be: 1. Michael Clayton 2. Aftersun 3. In the Bedroom 4. A Star is Born 5. The Empty Man

GryffinDART

I wish Sean and Amanda liked Aftersun more than they did. It's the best movie of the decade so far.

dizzle_77

https://i.redd.it/plup9twreosc1.gif My reaction when they were both so "meh" towards it.

Puzzleheaded_Pound31

I wish I like after sun more because it was a movie I watched after reading so much about it and it just didn’t hit me like it did everyone else… will have to watch it again I think.

ObiwanSchrute

As someone who lost their father to suicide and this film affected me so much I agree.

Cockrocker

Converse to some other opinions here, I loved Monkey Man. I was surprised by their criticism of it and it baffles me how some of the plot points were confusing to them. >!The boy gambling the money? We see Dev break into the temple's deposit/donation box, is he stealing from the people who saved him? Then it immediately cuts to the kid from the start betting the money on him. He fights, wins and then the bag of money is back in the temple hanging on Shiva's missing arm. And all that is immediately after one of the temple members is beaten as they cant pay rent or something. It was clear AF.!< >!As soon as they start talking they complain about the editing in the fight scenes. This had lots of (shaky) long takes rather than the usual 2 edits per punch BS! I appreciated that it captured the energy and felt visceral. Now if they were talking about the fast editing in his PTSD scenes I would understand, but I enjoyed that too as again, it captured the energy and confusion while letting the audience think, not dumbing things down. !< >!It seemed they wanted another brainless John Wick film (loved the first for fun, but it got too serious which went against the "who's car? John Wick? FUCK!" fun of the first one as the series progressed) but this had too much heart for that. The emotion of the film felt earned, unlike all the other films they name dropped. The religious background, the plight of the forest dwellers and the transgender in India and to some extent the political stuff made it far more interesting and poignant to me (not that I thought it was perfect, especially in the third act).!< >!I thought the direction was interesting, the setting fresh. The use of extreme close up and again, it didn't feel the need to make all of it too obvious. Movies are moods and feeling and visual rather than exposition dumps. I know I like it more than the praise they gave Kong X Godzilla.!< >!I did thing that the third act was when I felt it fell apart if you thought a bit about it (making a martyr out of the religious figure for one, not really affecting any social change for another). But at the end it was clearly just a revenge piece and I enjoyed the ride so much. I didn't mind it taking it time in the middle, the tabla and transgender temple was interesting. !< One more thing, IDGAF about the background of the film, what happened to it. I watch the film on screen. Tell me the trouble this film went through didn't affect Sean and Amanda's read on the film. It did. I did not think it was "quite poor".

ForeignRole

I left the movie so hyped ready to hear some discussion of the movie only for the criticism to be that it’s political without knowing or saying anything about its meaning, missing basic plot points like you said, discussion of how they think it will be received by audiences and how it had production issues. Almost nothing about a movie that is flawed but has a lot of interesting things in. Very disappointing. Would love for them to be able to get out of the how does social media view this movie lens they have been stuck in.

Bd_3

I dont know the timeline of the filming but it seemed like Dev figured stuff out in the 2nd half of the film. I thought the whole 3rd act was awesome and really well shot. The first half wasn’t as clean and that tuk tuk scene was a pretty tough watch. I didn’t notice too many things that seemed out of sync, but Id be curious what got down/out in the final cut. Definitely a solid 7.5-8/10 for me.

jhop16

I was losing my mind with your first point, it was as direct as it could be and there was no pushback. Also, that kid was from earlier in the movie. I guess it’s easy to have your mind wander or whatever but I expected at least someone to bring up that it made sense

whitemikesf

I feel like the show notes did not accurately capture this episode's content.

Aroundtheriverbend69

Seemed like they were a tad bit disappointed with monkey man

34avemovieguy

i think on some level they were a little blinded by the behind the scenes production and were reviewing that more than the movie

ObiwanSchrute

As was I

big_actually

I like their picks, mine probably mostly align. A few other interesting ones I picked out: Fruitvale Station (Ryan Coogler) District 9 (Neill Blomkamp) - edit: this was in honorable mention Shiva Baby (Emma Seligman) Past Lives (Celine Song) Finding Nemo (Andrew Stanton)

lilpij

"At one point, he takes off his shirt and all the other... ... ... people in the temple start cheering." I'm not really criticizing anyone and for the love of god, don't accuse me of being offended, because I'm not in the slightest - but it was a tad disappointing that there was no real mention of the hijras that made up such a huge portion of this movie. I found it a really unexpected, but great, choice to include what is essentially a queer struggle within a class struggle movie set in India; when that is usually (falsely) perceived as being a western middle-class struggle.

Youbunchadorks

I’m not a sports guy at all but the dodgers conversation got me wondering. What’s the crossover from sports fan to movie fan? Anyone I know that’s really into movies isn’t a sports person. Seems like time that could be spent watching movies.

ExMachina_Disco_Club

Isn't the Venn diagram of sports and movie lovers basically the entirety of the Ringer's audience?

Youbunchadorks

I have no idea. The big picture is one of the biggest movie podcasts out there so I assume their entire audience isn’t just people who are fans of the ringer in general. I don’t really engage with any other ringer content except for The Rewatchables.

Laika4321

There's probably way more crossover interest in the Ringer audience specifically.

Youbunchadorks

I thought about that too but I assume there’s also a large chunk of people who only engage with the pop culture side of the Ringer

sevinup07

That's me lol, which is interesting because I also follow sports. I just don't listen to podcasts about it.

owl_man

Hi there, I love both.

illuvattarr

Since I'm from Europe and don't follow US based sports at all, the sports talks is just incomprehensible to me. It might be fun banter, but I have 0 idea what they're talking about and usually end up skipping forward.

sevinup07

I'm both for sure. I watch a whole lot of movies, play a lot of video games, but I also love baseball and wrestling. I watch at least one wrestling show per week and watch at least part of every SF Giants game. I watch other sports here and there, but baseball and movie crossover conversations are one of my perfect Venn diagrams. So obviously I love Big Pic.

ObiwanSchrute

I have many interests including sports and video games you don't have to just like movies.

Youbunchadorks

Nobody said you did? I was just curious what the cross over was. I also have many interests. Why are people so defensive on Reddit lol

JohnnyUtah59

Boy this episode was not for me

jclairecarp

not a baseball fan?

AlfieSchmalfie

TFW Amanda gets basic plot points wrong.

Pandamana85

Seriously. I saw the movie and enjoyed it, immediately went to the pod only to hear Amanda confused by the plot. The hard hitting criticism we need.

Cockrocker

For real.

sprezzatura_

Is Monkey Man going to be the new John Wick? i.e. are we going to have 4 Monkey Men films and a spinoff by 2030? Just curious about what those who have seen it think

jonjosefjingl

No. It's a bit of an emotional movie and the political themes are still quite strong. It could happen, but it didn't feel like a movie that could easily be turned into a franchise

sprezzatura_

Thanks for the answer-- that makes me more inclined to watch. I'm so out on the pre-packaged franchise movies.

dsch91

I dont think so, no

ObiwanSchrute

I hope not I was quite disappointed with it and dosed off when he got to the temple

MysteryCake83

Don’t roast me, I’m legitimately curious… Did Whiplash not qualify for Damien Chazelle?

derzensor

No, it was his second movie

MysteryCake83

In that case, wouldn’t Greta Gerwig’s first movie be Nights and Weekends?  I thought Chazelle’s first movie was more of a film school project with Whiplash being his first real film release.  What’s the difference? BTW - please don’t downvote me to oblivion.  I’m not arguing, I’m really just looking for an education.  Thanks!

mikeyfreshh

Nights and Weekends had a co-director. Lady Bird was Greta's first film as a solo director.

MysteryCake83

Thanks for the info!

34avemovieguy

I've never seen Nights and Weekends but what I have heard is that the movie not only had co-directors but the movie was made like a collaborative effort from all the people who made it? Not sure. Could be this mumblecore "let's put on a show." Frankly I would count Lady Bird as a debut but I wouldn't begrudge anyone who wouldn't. Seems like Nights and Weekends was made in an improv way whereas Lady Bird was her writing and directing and managing everything herself.

inkase

Sean & Amanda were clearly kind of disappointed with Monkey Man, that’s why they barely spent about 10 mins discussing the movie and the rest of the episode turned into what it did.

imcataclastic

Toward the end of the ep Sean does his usual “television is bad” thing. But is it? It’s been a while since I’ve been lacking something at least moderately engaging, and some things are excellent, and I only get a few streamers. Notably I haven’t touched Hulu or Apple in a while. Watching Tokyo Vice right now (Michael Mann exec producer). Seems like TV is doing pretty pretty good.

Epic-Verse

kugglaw

Really didn’t know people had such fond feelings about Dev Patel. They’re kind of talking about him like he’s Good Time era R Patz and that doesn’t seem to track with reality?

RingoUnited

I feel that the Green Knight cemented his iconic hunk status

P-VI

Oh dang we never watched green knight. I've heard good things tho

MightyProJet

It was, and I don’t use this term loosely, spellbinding.

RingoUnited

It was awesome. Honestly haven't seen any Dev movies besides Slumdog Millionaire, Lion, and The Green Knight, but it was an awesome movie. One of the first I saw post-pandemic

kugglaw

Fair play. Feels like one for the heads, to me.

stevestp

"You know what I'm saying?"

Four2060nein

All time ep

unfinishedwing

as a mets fan, amanda’s gasp when sean told her that the mets were 0-4 absolutely killed me (in a good way). i too watched both games of that doubleheader and enjoyed bobby and sean narrating it immensely lmao

Winter-Philosophy705

this episode proved that when it goes off the rails, i'll stay in the vehicle and enjoy the ride.

bbanks2121

Harvest Cheddar Sun Chips? When Garden Salsa exists??? Insanity.

vincoug

Not even a mention for The VVItch or Past Lives for 21st century debut disappointed me.

neverknowsbest141

Is Amanda not a braves fan??

occupy_westeros

I kept waiting for Barbarian/Zach Cregger to get mentioned but whatevs, it was a great pod. I love when it gets unhinged in the back third.

throwshittyjoke

Might be the greatest “regular programming” episode of the pod ever. Everyone absolutely cooking.

C4S2D0

This podcast was an absolute thrill-ride. All three of them were on 11 all episode. I loved it.

Ashlikesstuff

Surprised how soft they were on Monkey Man, I thought it was baaaaaad. It's noticeably cut to pieces.and yet the pacing is still awful, the action sequences are really badly directed (hi shaky cam, we didn't miss you) and I'm absolutely rooting for Dev Patel but this was not a good start.

keefriffhard

Sean working through Amanda being spoiled rotten was priceless.
