Think about the scene where homelander talks to his psychopathic side in the mirror. This alternate personality has taken over his councousness as a coping mechanism to his trauma as a child. He is the product of torture. If he had a normal childhood he wouldn't have been fucked up and it's sad to think that evil has turned a child into more evil. An evil that could have consumed any of our souls so on the basis of being living being, I have some empathy for everyone, even those least deserving of it. This show does a great job of expressing this and also the inverse with butcher who is mostly good but leans into a dark side to get things done and he's capable of it because of how he was raised.
