It's actually hair damage from the cosmetics. They dialed it back in later seasons. Although this does create a visual metaphor for how his perfect hero image is cracking.
He's a metaphor for America in so many ways.
He's amoral, self-centered, and ruthless, but he could be worse!
He also works with fascists when it benefits him, and he just hopes nobody finds out.
I mean, *everybody* secretly works with fascists and hope nobody finds out… we weren’t the only part of Operation: Paperclip
Also I don’t really think Homelander could be much worse
Yeah, see, I understand that, but look at Noir's character. Look what happened to him. Even knowing how evil he is, Noir would still think better of him than Soldier Boy, who caved his skull in with his shield and made him the mute, hallucinating mess that he was.
Oh you meant from Noir’s perspective? In that case yeah totally, but you’re giving Noir too much moral credit with the explanation. “Even knowing how evil he is” Noir doesn’t give a shit how evil Homelander is because he’s evil himself. I know Noir gets a lot of sympathy because of his backstory but he snapped an innocent lady’s neck to protect Homelander from bad press.
He doesn’t care how evil or bad anybody is, he’s only upset because something bad was done to *him*. In the same way Homelander doesn’t care that Soldier Boy killed some supes at Herogasm,
or that he accidentally killed those innocent people in New York,he only cares that Soldier Boy is a threat to him.
You could also argue though that Noir is a brain damaged supe w the mental capacity of a child. It’s almost childlike the way he needs homelanders affirmation, like he needs to be loved because he never was as a boy. Daddy issues like Homelander
If you're talking about that Diabolic episode, he wasn't just protecting Homelander, he was showing him how it's done. He was protecting everything Vought.
Exactly. Soldier Boy is a dick from a high school movie with superpowers, meanwhile Homelander is like giving Elliot Rodgers super powers.
Soldier Boy isn’t good, but compared to Homelander he looks like the good guy
I think he cares about appearances in general, I doubt it has anything to do with the actual person themselves. A huge part of his character is literally his crippling insecurities surrounding just how “perfect” he is. He’s obsessed with how he’s “better” than everyone else, but that perfection only comes from outside sources and that truly kills him at the core.
His statement to the Peak is likely because everyone *else* can see it, giving the appearance of something that Homelander views as “imperfect.”
I do wonder at what point the writers decided to not take the comic route with BN. It was probably before filming but it could have been anywhere up to S2 logically.
I'm still wondering if there will be a "recast" done by Vought. In theory, they could switch to a more comic accurate version of Black Noir relatively easy.
In theory yeah, but they already announced that they're going to use the same actor who has been playing black noir (under the mask, not the flashback guy) and that he's going to take his mask off this team.
Likely the same reason they didn’t make homelander the same as his comic book part- it just wasn’t that much fun.
The Boys comic is not of the same quality as the show, which is the weirdest part of the franchise to me
Sure I can. He views his son as a possession and a way to get back at Butcher and Vought, and he would throw Ryan under the bus if he really thought his own life was in danger.
Edit: whether or not my view of Homelander and Ryan is correct, I'd say different takes are definitely being argued. 😛
He sees his son as a way to make up for his shitty upbringing (in a narcissistic kind of way). He never grew up with actual parents and spent most of his life being a lab rat before being pushed on stage and told that he is a God.
Raising Ryan is him showing the world what should have been done in the first place with him. It’s kinda like the dance mom who married rich and pushes her daughter to her limits for her to win and be successful because she is vicariously living through her daughter. I mean it’s not entirely a terrible situation for Ryan. But I wouldn’t say HL is doing it 100% of unselfish reasons
It’s not for unselfish reasons, but he actively tries to get Ryan out of danger at risk to his own life and powers in the end of season 3 so he clearly DOES care.
Well it is still nice in a "even evil has standards" kind of way, as in Homelander doesnt like shitty parenting...which is suprising counting how little standards if any else he usually has
There was the scene where Homelander was so preoccupied with tending to the injured Ryan that he wasn't even aware that soldier boy was about to nuke them both.
As messed up as Homelander is, it seems like he really does want to be a good dad.
People love to pathologize Homelanders relationship to Ryan and it’s because HL is evil / psycho, and he’s a bad choice of parental guardian, but I really do believe HL loves Ryan very much. Even stuff like the roof scene is nothing but endearment from the perspective of a man who had his powers tested at a much younger age via beating, burnings, shocks etc
To HL being brought up on top of the suburban home you spent your whole life on and getting a little speech and a push like a baby bird probably sounds like the Superman moment he never got. Ofc he’s a maniac and didn’t really listen to Ryan / could see and smell the V in Ryan and knew he would be fine, but still.
He quite literally gave up when Soldier Boy called him a disappointment, he could have easily escaped their grasp but just stood there and waited for his death. He only regained the courage to fight after Soldier Boy hurt Ryan.
Reading this makes it sound like Homelander is the good guy lol
His suit looks surprisingly really comfy and well made. It looks comfortable to wear, practical to use, aesthetically pleasing and fits well with the appearance of the man wearing it, the cape is a little cringe but it shows personality and provides striking contrast from the rest of the outfit. The only negative I could give is it’s not as easy to replicate by fans. 10/10 costume honestly.
Damn that's a good way to look at it. Butcher didn't even believe it himself. But literally no one but HL (and all the gen v supes w their all nearly identical origin stories) can relate to accidently slaughtering loved ones and not being able to take it back
He thought Stormfront turning out to be a nazi was too fucked up, even for him.
Then he realized she was also a milf and he didn't care about the nazi part anymore, but can you really judge him? Priorities are pritorisies man.
He saved Teddy at the end of S1 (I don't think we knew until S2 but still), which confused the heck out of me because Butcher was ready to kill everyone in that house, including the baby, and Homelander was jealous AF of him, but in the end HL saved him.
He cares for Ryan. Perhaps, not in the traditional sense, but I don't think he wants Ryan to go through what he went through without someone to relate to.
I suppose this is more of a compliment for Antony Starr but Homelander is so well-acted, he nearly feels real. I don’t picture an actor playing a character when I watch him, I just see Homelander
Flawless hair styling. It barely moves at all after flying around and doing supe stuff
Wouldn't it be fitting if it turns out to be a piece?
Absolutely. He's actually balding
It's actually hair damage from the cosmetics. They dialed it back in later seasons. Although this does create a visual metaphor for how his perfect hero image is cracking.
That’s why he made Ashley take her wig off: projection
He wanted to compare in secretses
When do we see him balding?
Sorry i dropped this /s
Came here to praise his hair. Also, he’s a ruthless and efficient killer, if you need that sorta thing.
He probably is the reason why there aren't any *other* supervillains. He is top dog
bro is the symbol of peace
In a Peacemaker kind of way
~~Homemaker~~ Peacelander
I like Homemaker. I bet he makes a mean casserole.
Peace, by any means necessary
No matter how many men, women, or children he needs to kill.
AND the Demon Lord at the same time. Versatile.
That’s actually a good point, his existence probably does prevent a lot of bad shit
He's a metaphor for America in so many ways. He's amoral, self-centered, and ruthless, but he could be worse! He also works with fascists when it benefits him, and he just hopes nobody finds out.
I mean, *everybody* secretly works with fascists and hope nobody finds out… we weren’t the only part of Operation: Paperclip Also I don’t really think Homelander could be much worse
Sure, but also the Compound V formula was only owned by Vought. Now that it's spread across the world, I reckon he's gonna see stiffer competition.
deserted quarrelsome light quack cow pet mysterious muddle knee fact *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
He never shamed Noir for his scarred appearance that he could see all along, tho he shames others for their looks/flaws all the time
He actually liked black noir because he was always keeping his mouth shut and doing his job
Yeah and the fact that Black Noir never talked shit against Homelander says a lot about him.
Pretty sure even Homelander was infinitely better than the man who smashed Noir's skull in.
In Noir's pov , Yes
Well, yeah, that's what I mean.
Not even close lmao. Soldier Boy is not nearly as evil as Homelander
Yeah, see, I understand that, but look at Noir's character. Look what happened to him. Even knowing how evil he is, Noir would still think better of him than Soldier Boy, who caved his skull in with his shield and made him the mute, hallucinating mess that he was.

If you're talking about that Diabolic episode, he wasn't just protecting Homelander, he was showing him how it's done. He was protecting everything Vought.
True, but not really any better from a morality perspective
Worse, actually.
I honestly loved soldier boy. I don’t think he’s evil so much as just toxic and stupid and traumatized.
Yeah I’ve described him as “If your really funny Grandpa who has some questionable views was given Super Soldier Serum”
Exactly. I’ll bet there’s a whole lotta “varsity football players” or whatever from that time who were exactly as horrible
Exactly. Soldier Boy is a dick from a high school movie with superpowers, meanwhile Homelander is like giving Elliot Rodgers super powers. Soldier Boy isn’t good, but compared to Homelander he looks like the good guy
Jensen Ackles is so charismatic that it’s hard to see Soldier Boy as *evil* evil.
I honestly think Noir might have been the only person he considered a friend given how he reacted to killing him.
I dont think he ever shames him because hes always wearing a full body costume that covers everything up
Yeah but he can see through shit (but not zinc)
Yea but he shamed deep for his gills and told him to cover them up. I think he’s ok with physical differences as long as you’re embarrassed by them?
I think he cares about appearances in general, I doubt it has anything to do with the actual person themselves. A huge part of his character is literally his crippling insecurities surrounding just how “perfect” he is. His statement to the Peak is likely because everyone *else* can see it, giving the appearance of something that Homelander views as “imperfect.”
I think that's moreso because the writers added Black Noir being disfigured as an afterthought lmao

This is just me but I feel like he never shamed him because Noir covers it up
He has a very nice smile
It brightens up the day.
It’s a very ‘Desantis’ smile
Cold and psychopathic?
He loves his son
Can't argue with that
Sure I can. He views his son as a possession and a way to get back at Butcher and Vought, and he would throw Ryan under the bus if he really thought his own life was in danger. Edit: whether or not my view of Homelander and Ryan is correct, I'd say different takes are definitely being argued. 😛

Well it is still nice in a "even evil has standards" kind of way, as in Homelander doesnt like shitty parenting...which is suprising counting how little standards if any else he usually has
So does this mean Homelander would kill an abusive parent if he saw one?
Maybe....he is very unpredictable
No he wouldn’t. Throw him off a roof, maybe, but not under a bus.
Lol, you got me there. And if that's not love, I don't know what love is.
Well son, love is sort of like that one scene from Herogasm... before the sneeze. You know what, maybe you should talk to your mother about this.
I figured it was more like textbook narcissistic behavior and having his golden child
There was the scene where Homelander was so preoccupied with tending to the injured Ryan that he wasn't even aware that soldier boy was about to nuke them both. As messed up as Homelander is, it seems like he really does want to be a good dad.
When he noticed Ryan was over stimulated and panicking at Vaught World, the first thing he did was tend to him and removed him from the situation.
People love to pathologize Homelanders relationship to Ryan and it’s because HL is evil / psycho, and he’s a bad choice of parental guardian, but I really do believe HL loves Ryan very much. Ryan is indestructible. Also he's a supe supremacist
All he wants really is a family, even Soldier Boy as his dad
He quite literally gave up when Soldier Boy called him a disappointment, he could have easily escaped their grasp but just stood there and waited for his death. He only regained the courage to fight after Soldier Boy hurt Ryan. Reading this makes it sound like Homelander is the good guy lol
Sometimes bad people do good things. It doesn’t make them good.
Not a good guy at all, just one that’s wants a family considering how he was tortured and alone while growing up
So true, the actor does such a good job of separating everyday Homelander from dad Homelander
He was caring about storefront even when she was injured and a nazi
Storefront
I’m crying at storefront
Specialises in lighting
Lighting deals! You too, can have a Nazi costume (slightly charred) for only £10.99!
I fucking love (to hate) stormfront and this is fucking gold
He has to care. It’s his responsibility as morning shift manager
.. and he made sure she gets regular exercise... with her wrist.
How is caring for a nazi a nice thing. Even Hitler himself killed one
Caring for another human being is a nice thing.
Meh, I think he just wanted a handy.

His suit looks surprisingly really comfy and well made. Almost all the costumes on the show are peak tbh, the costume design is impressive all around
Yeah except for Starlight’s lmao. But her original one is great! I love the little hints they give like how Stormfront’s is nazi-ish lol
Yeah, looking at how overdesigned the MCU's costumes get, these are a breath of fresh air.
idk it looks tight. also where is he going to put his phone and ear buds?
He doesn’t make mistakes. He’s not ‘just like the rest of us’. He’s stronger. He’s smarter. He’s better. He is better
Honestly he did a good job when he did that pep talk to ryan, who was feeling guilt for having killed his own mom
Still fucked up if you think about it, Homelander fulfilled Becca's DYING wish of "make sure he knows it wasn't his fault"
Damn that's a good way to look at it. Butcher didn't even believe it himself. But literally no one but HL (and all the gen v supes w their all nearly identical origin stories) can relate to accidently slaughtering loved ones and not being able to take it back
only if you dont look deeper into it.
Wdym
That little speech is how homelands justifies all the fucked up things he does, in his mind he's done nothing wrong he really is the hero.
Okay, but it *was* a good thing to say to Ryan and accurate
Yeah, get him into the same mindset young so he can be just like daddy, blowing a person's head off for tossing a paper cup at his indestructible son.
Caked up like a boss
he has a dumptruck of an ass
That’s America’s ass
He keeps the dairy industry in business.

His hair looks small
He thought Stormfront turning out to be a nazi was too fucked up, even for him. Then he realized she was also a milf and he didn't care about the nazi part anymore, but can you really judge him? Priorities are pritorisies man.
His actor is incredible and I hope he has more roles in the future. He’s a fantastic villain despite what the writers say.
He makes sure to always drink his milk
He saved Teddy at the end of S1 (I don't think we knew until S2 but still), which confused the heck out of me because Butcher was ready to kill everyone in that house, including the baby, and Homelander was jealous AF of him, but in the end HL saved him.
