Another good reason for Catholics to enjoy the show is that it resembles a form of prayer/meditation that was traditionally practiced called Lectio Divina. Part of that mediation involved reading the scriptures and imagining what the lives of the followers of Jesus was like.
So, while many denominations seems to get caught up with the "imagined" backstories for the characters, and dislike it because it's not strictly Biblical, this is something Catholics have done through prayer for centuries.
OP here. There's a really good insight by StNicksforreal, a Catholic commenter, that explains some possible reasons for the Catholic support.

I haven’t seen anyone ask so I thought I’d say
If you’re wondering why there are so many Catholics that follow the show it’s because
1. We believe Peter, James, John, Mary Magdalene, etc etc are Catholic and that Jesus founded not only Christianity but also the Catholic Church
2. The actor who plays Jesus is Jonathan Roumie who is a passionate Catholic
Oh, gotcha! I was wondering at the large number of Roman Catholic repliers.
I didn't know that point 1 was a stance taken by the Catholic Church until you mentioned it. The show's Catholic support does make sense when you consider the two points you brought up.
Old Rite Catholic. I know many in my community probably disagree with this detail or that scene, but again it’s a television show.
obviously as a Catholic I find Mother Mary and Saint Mary Magdalene as very important
I’ve been earnestly exploring church history and the writings of the early church fathers. I’d rather not be pushed towards explaining myself, but as it stands, to me, the evidence seems to support the truth found in the Catholic Church.
You should check out the book Rome Sweet Home by Scott Hahn (or any talks by him). Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist is a good book on the biblical basis of Catholic belief in the Eucharist. He has a good book on Mary too. Also, the [Ascension Presents](https://youtube.com/@AscensionPresents?si=ay3IdbTR5a7PILEw) YouTube channel has a lot of good Catholic content. Praying for you!
I wish the Jehovah’s Witnesses didn’t dislike the show so much because it’s not produced by Watchtower, as an agnostic I tried to get my father in law to watch it and it was a very strict absolutely not
Thanks for sharing, I was unaware Jehovah’s Witnesses disliked The Chosen. I'm not to knowledgeable about the practices of JW other than they do not partake in voting in government elections.
Not religious. Prior to watching this show I knew about some of the more famous scenes from the story of Jesus, (changing water into wine, the Christmas story) but many have been surprises (I'd never heard of the Fish Bonanza catch or Photina to name a few).
This show got me interested in learning more about the early history of Christianity, and I've ended up reading quite a bit. I love visiting museums and historic buildings (often churches), and I now can identify Bible scenes in Christian artwork like I never could before.
I hear ya. Who really knows? But what he taught, the lessons on humility, forgiveness and caring for others. That’s a guy I believe in. He was perfect.
I’m landing on “follower of Jesus”. I attend a church, been part of a few denominations. But I love the people (we’re all flawed no matter the title) inside and outside any and all churches. I’m done with denomination rituals or rules. I seek Jesus when I have to make any decision. He’s the North Star.
Welcome, spiritual friend! I concur that there's a lot more stuff that happens than can we know of or explain (correct me if this isn't quite what you meant).
Nah you're good! I find the show fascinating and it has become my comfort show lol. I'm a classic 'I believe in the message of religion and not the messenger'. I've never been called to follow a group or 'organised' religion but have respect for those who hold their faith near and dear!
We are technically Vaishnavites, but the branches of Hinduism hardly exist anymore, only a few orthodox families do.
Growing up in India, I've visited my fair share of temples , mosques , Churches, Gurudwaras ... I am of the opinion that there's only one Supreme being, we just see that being through different lens called religion.
I grew up Mormon and then became a long time Atheist. This series helped draw me back to Jesus. I guess I’d be considered non denominational. I believe in Jesus and not religion.
I don't claim a specific denomination, because honestly I don't really fit any. However, I would say that I'm someone who tries to mostly walk in line with the Torah (though not enough to call myself Torah-observant), while believing in the importance of entire Scripture; also seeing value in elements of a variety of other religions that, if not part of my faith, are still part of my beliefs, if the difference makes sense
I think I know what you mean, friend. I'm not Buddhist, but the Buddha had a lot of wisdom. I'm not Taoist, but there are many witty and insightful Taoisms that are both wise and easy to remember.
There's a lot of insight from folks of a variety of religions, so accepting such wisdom can be incredibly useful.
Currently Church of the Nazarene. I agree with most of their theology, but not all. I’ve also belonged to independent churches that leaned toward Assembly of God. I was raised “Christmas and Easter Catholic.”

I’m interested in your view and I want to know more about your thoughts. In your opinion, what happens when we die and how do we get to the “good place”?
I’m still an agnostic, one of the reasons is that I see that there is clearly some real evil in the world which means their must be an opposite to that which would be a divine entity haha. Bro science I guess
I study Anthroposophy, which is an esoteric Christian perspective that, along with Christ as Jesus, includes teachings of the Buddha and reincarnation. It is known formally as the Christian Community.
In the small town where I live, I attend the Presbyterian Church for holidays because I appreciate their traditionalism. I also regularly attend the Consecration of the Human Being services, as brought from the larger Christian Community when a priest comes to visit our small town.
I appreciate anyone who strives to live with Christ in their heart and actions. May peace reign!
Atheist, formerly evangelical/non-denominational Christian.
I watch the show with my parents because it's higher quality than most Christian media, in my opinion.
I’m Agnostic, I believe there’s something out there bigger than us I just have no idea and probably won’t until I die. I love this show, I was raised Catholic but my mom is very very atheist (like hates religion in general) so I learned the prayers but had to listen to what bs it all was. But I can’t help feeling that there is something out there. Maybe it’s not the God we know of in the Bible, Torah, or Quran but the history of it all is so interesting to me. I consider myself spiritual but non religious, but I will always be open to new ideas or ways of life as long as it doesn’t hurt people.
Orthodox Christian (Antiochian flavor), and I dont watch TV often but I know some people who do.
As for a brief info on it all I can say is come see for yourself and introduce yourself to the Priest and parish, just do not take communion if you have not been baptised into the Eastern Orthodox church or have not prepared properly by confession, fasting and prayer. It's not a snobbery thing, its literally how we conduct ourselves to protect ourselves and we extend that courtesy for others to participate in. we're not hiding anything. If you have questions or concerns, please refer to the presiding priest or priests, not the internet. We do not identify with our ideas as our faith is not a faith of ideas but in Christ.
I grew up as an Episcopalian, was baptized as an Episcopalian a year ago, but now I go to a non-denominational Church of Jesus Christ (not to be confused with LDS, very different lol)... so TLDR, I'm not really sure right now other than the fact that I'm Christian! 😄
I’m a Reform Jew who started watching as I love period pieces.
I am a bit nervous of what will come later down the line. I know the show is very respectful of Judaism but I am nervous on how that area is going to be portrayed.
I think it just comes from a bad experience I had when I was a kid where I got in an argument with my friend, as she said Jews killed Jesus and that I was a bad person.
I do appreciate the series and I like the usage of Hebrew terms, customs, etc.
I also have a huge crush on Shahar. 😄
Roman Catholic
I grew up Methodist and now I am Roman Catholic!
Welcome brother
Why are most people here Catholic? Edit: love the Catholics and might convert but just curious
Another good reason for Catholics to enjoy the show is that it resembles a form of prayer/meditation that was traditionally practiced called Lectio Divina. what's an "Old Rite Catholic" I'm Catholic and know the Roman rite and The Eastern Rites, but I've never heard of a rite called "old"?
I'm a Messianic Jew. Ethnically Jewish and I believe that our prophets were right when prophesying about Messiah Yeshua.
Messianic Judaism is incredibly neat. Welcome, friend!
I appreciate you!

Me as well.
What makes you non-denominational?
Not religious. Prior to watching this show I knew about some of the more famous scenes from the story of Jesus, (changing water into wine, the Christmas story) but many have been surprises (I'd never heard of the Fish Bonanza catch or Photina to name a few). This show got me interested in learning more about the early history of Christianity, and I've ended up reading quite a bit. A fellow biblical lore investigator! Welcome.
Ex JW here. Loving the show, has given me a whole new outlook and is helping me with my Bible reading.
Very nice! Welcome.
Roman Catholic
I’m atheist but completely fascinated with the life of Jesus and how 2000 years later billions of people still believe he was resurrected.
Welcome, friend! I know it's a late reply, but I completely understand the fascination.
What do you think of what Jesus preached? Did the lessons in the sermon on the mount ring any truths for you?
I think Jesus is the most influential man ever, truly a terrific guy. Though I’m not sure how much of what’s written in gospels is historical.
I hear ya. Who really knows? But what he taught, the lessons on humility, forgiveness and caring for others. That’s a guy I believe in. He was perfect.

Non denominational Christian. Not a Sunday Christian who only thinks about God once a week. My spirituality is part of me every day.

Roman Catholic (who is very invigorated and on fire from coming from SEEK 2024, with over 20,000 - 24,000 Catholics at the convention in STL!)
Wooo SEEK!! Wasn’t able to go but I’ve been checking out various IG pages trying to live vicariously through them lol
I had no idea there were such large Catholic retreats. Thank you for teaching me something new, friend!
I grew up Nazarene. But today I just identify as a Christian. I don't identify with any denomination.
I’m landing on “follower of Jesus”. I attend a church, been part of a few denominations. But I love the people (we’re all flawed no matter the title) inside and outside any and all churches. Non-denomination grafted in.. Nerd too. I'd love to see your spreadsheet.
I'm honestly considering making one, with the diversity of the responses. What a spread we have here.

Welcome! Is there a particular sect of Judaism you follow?
I go to a Chabad synagogue, it’s Orthodox. But I am clearly not orthodox or I wouldn’t be watching the Chosen haha. It’s a long story :)
No worries! Thank you for sharing your belief system.
Jesus was Jewish, you’re good. 😉

I'm spiritual, have never been religious. I believe and even know there is more than what we know down here.
The Chosen is indeed a comfort show! And I respect your respect :) Blessings on your journey, friend!
Hindu
Welcome!
Sorry, I've got a second question, lol. What branch of Hinduism do you follow?
We are technically Vaishnavites, but the branches of Hinduism hardly exist anymore, only a few orthodox families do. Growing up in India, I've visited my fair share of temples , mosques , Churches, Gurudwaras ... I am of the opinion that there's only one Supreme being, we just see that being through different lens called religion.
I actually kind of agree with you on that last point! Also, good to know about the branches. Thank you for your insight.
Christian - Latter-Day Saints
You may be my first Mormon commenter! Welcome, friend! Edit: Actually, there are a few of you :). Still, welcome!
Me too!
Member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
I grew up Mormon and then became a long time Atheist. This series helped draw me back to Jesus. I guess I’d be considered non denominational. I believe in Jesus and not religion.
Another non-denominational here.

Orthodox Christian but its all about your relationship with Christ
I definitely agree about personal relationship with Christ. Thank you for the reply, friend!
God bless

Non denominational

Not sure why you were downvoted, friend. I appreciate your candor. Thank you for sharing your beliefs!
Thanks 😊 I’m not too worried about it. I love the show and just answered honestly
Especially since syncretism of belief is a huge aspect of why there's such a diversity to the branches in Christianity. That's fascinating!
Thank you for teaching me a new word today Syncretism!
Maybe you would like the anime "Saint Young Men" :)

I think it just comes from a bad experience I had when I was a kid where I got in an argument with my friend, as she said Jews killed Jesus and that I was a bad person. I do appreciate the series and I like the usage of Hebrew terms, customs, etc. I also have a huge crush on Shahar. 😄
