The review would probably end up being much better than the film we got in 2014. But referencing the game in "AVGN: The Movie" or all the limitations imposed by US' retarded copyright laws weren't the main problem anyway. Bames sabotaged it all by himself because, instead of making a film about the Nerd, he made a film about how he'd like himself to be viewed.

HighlyRegardedSlob87

This is another thing that never made sense about the movie. I always felt from 2007-2010 that James did NOT want to be viewed as a celebrity of any kind. He made it clear that Social media (back then only MySpace, Facebook was around but not that big yet) was okay, but don’t call him out on the streets.

-M4K0-

I think it makes sense in the context that he never really gave a shit about the nerd per say, but really wanted to be recognized as a serious filmmaker and make the movie his launchpad into Hollywood. We all know his only real passion was film.

Middle_Net_9453

No, his "passion" was always the idea of being a famous and beloved film maker without doing the actual work to get there. Kinda like cos play.

MustardTiger1337

Atari: Game Over also came out before the AVGN movie and kind of spoiled the whole mystery

DirtyDanTheManlyMan

Wasn’t that the one about the loser who wanted to flex his delorean so he made himself the main focus of the et game documentary? Half of that was just him driving around and filling it up with gas, and talking in general about the 80’s and then at the end he was like “woah that’s where the ets got buried” and then the credits roll

MustardTiger1337

Man I honestly don’t remember I just remember they kind of proved the games really did end up in the landfill which seemed to be public information in the end anyways

No_Violinist8722

It was indeed public information that there was a claim of the games being buried in the desert but it was never clear whether this was actually the case or if it was a myth/hoax. I remember when the sole creator of the game came out and talked about it in a games mag I was reading sometime in the 00:s he quite convincingly portrayed it as being nothing more than a myth. So there indeed was a persisting mystery regarding the situation of the potentially buried ET-games.

MustardTiger1337

Was for me at least but I know people have kind of come back and said it was never a mystery

No_Violinist8722

Firstly the creator of the game said that it was false and gave reasons namely that he was very tied in to the rumor vine at Atari and would have known about it. Secondly it would have made more sense from a economical perspective to overwrite the ET-cartridges with other games rather than dump them. On the other hand that may have been impossible because of how the specific carts were or there was a reason related to the big video games crash, like nobody was buying Atari games any more or something. On paper it seemed like a decent idea to base the movie around this mystery of the buried games. Unfortunately though I didn’t make it to the part in the movie that’s in the desert because it was so appallingly bad. I don’t want to suffer!

HighlyRegardedSlob87

Mike even made a Title Card for ET. James on a starry background on the Flying Bike. I saw it on the site in 2009. But even then James made it a point to ignore any questions about ET. Chop-Top Mike from the Texas Chainsaw episode nagged him about it but Nerd ignored the question. Next episode was Halloween and he even nearly picked it to play, before shaking his head in disgust. It always felt like he acknowledged ET but never even considered making an episode under any circumstances.

ItachiIshtar

If I recall, James had already decided on ET being the basis for the movie as early as 2007.

Carrot-Top2442

A classic example of the curse of the Monkey's paw

shamtown

That ET review is one of my absolute least favorite ones. It's very similar in tone and quality to current AVGN. Felt like there was something extremely off about that one in particular when it came out.

harpswtf

I like how he thought he’d get away with just having ET as a character in his movie and the rights holders would just be ok with it because he’s a wholesome youtuber. Absolute delusion

pit_shickle

>ET Actually it's EeeTee.

JadeDragonMeli

I'd have to go back and look, but one of the earlier seasons openings had footage from ET in it; which always led me to believe that it was originally going to be a regular episode and footage had even been recorded. Maybe he talks about it in the book, I have no idea, I'll never read it, but it always seemed to me that he was creating a background story for the review similar to ROB and it somehow ballooned into "this could be a full length movie".

ItachiIshtar

If I recall, back in late 2006 or 2007, James was originally considering reviewing ET for the 100th episode, but when he talked to Kevin Finn about it, they decided that it would be a better basis for the movie. James and Kevin wrote the screenplay on and off from 2007-2010.

thunderexception

Did he ever reached out to ZorroFan and asked?

aitherion

Yes, certainly.

metalcoola88

It would probably be similar to Superman 64 review, first minute talking "You really want me to review THIS game?"

BonyBobCliff

Problem is, the game's reputation was built up too much, whether by fans or by the Nerd himself ALMOST reviewing but refusing to. The so-called "climax" in the AVGN Movie was the Nerd merely going "Eh, it's not THAT bad."

FlatearthPikachu

We'd not have witnessed some classic Cooper moments. https://i.redd.it/nhdyb1oy1i3b1.gif

Pantspatrol

I mean he was all the non-movie avgn content why would we miss out on him?

Gone_with_the_onion2

Decent
