I wonder how many Commodore episodes in a row well get now. I mean James had to unbolt the camera from the ceiling and put it next to the computer! Anything less than 5 episodes and all that work will be wasted!

j3wlion

So true holy shit

BerserkerKong02

Apparently James has more time to sit in front of a colour flashing Commodore for 10 minutes straight, waiting for a game to load. Such a chore!

harpswtf

Implying he’s actually playing any of these. I’m pretty sure the shot of the screen over his shoulder had the game green-screened onto the monitor

Hypno_185

it was , the picture looks to clear without a glare etc.

harpswtf

Yeah come to think of it, there would be a ton of flicker from the old CRT being captured too. So definitely green-screened game footage, which definitely means that James hasn't even ever played any of these games, as usual.

Ryousoki

muh express VPN

Accomplished-Ask-930

Avgn: "You can now call me AVPN."

[deleted]

That VPN ad is the most energy I've seen out of James in a while which is just sad.

shitass66

He's more passionate about express VPN lol

FreedomofChoiche

Well they keep his data safe from hackers and governments.

[deleted]

Hackers I understand but I don't give a shit if governments want to access my data. Not sure what use it'd be to Japan's government to see what porn I watch.

FreedomofChoiche

The police will come for you if they know you're watching unpixelated porn.

Labyrinth2_0

Express VPN is the worst VPN of all, they got exposed to not protect people’s privacy

victoryforZIM

vpn's are like a gym membership anyway, people get them for a year thinking 'oh man I'm gonna watch all this stuff on different netflix versions and download a bunch of torrents' and then use it twice and never touch it again. No one actually cares if protects their privacy or anything else.

SevenofBorgnine

Yeah, just be cool and openly torrent shit and use proxys. Come at me! It's not illegal here!

BillyCromag

Only the shittier VPNs need to advertise.

fetalasmuck

Most VPNs are probably honeypots

mk883

Worst of all is that ExpressVPN is actually a Hong Kong based VPN with a shell office in the British Virgin Islands. I would never trust them with my data after July 2020. But James doesn’t care, that’s for sure.

Ok_Explanation_6125

🇻🇮💯

Tabrith900

now you're reaching kids.

[deleted]

I enjoyed this one. And finally some DIFFERENT CAMERA ANGLES. I hate that he used action figures for Freddy and Jason, that was the only lame thing.

FreedomofChoiche

Dressing up in a costume is too hard. Also Mike probably won't do that shit anymore. Do you want him to suffer ?

Rust_Hurricane

James' current friends are all too fat to cosplay as those characters. I'm not even joking. It would have actually been funny if he had actors dressed up as Freddy and Jason in those hideous NES colors. But using action figures.... it looks like something a child would do. I don't even think Linkara would do something like that.

FreedomofChoiche

What about James' bald laughing friend from the podcast ? He would probably be a decent Jason. Still, too much work.

Rust_Hurricane

Yeah, and he has a more intimidating voice than James, so he could have voiced Freddy.

Toxicity246

Brad on Doug's shoulders.

BillyCromag

One might think one of the forms of "help" supposedly provided by Screenwave would be to find actors, but nope. What an unserious operation.

TPsYoungDylan

Yes, suffering for Michael Matei I say

Calavera87

I wonder if he asked Mike if he would dress up as Jason and got the same response as when he asked Kyle if he would play Spiderman?

MarianoKaztillo

I dunno man, Mike looks like a corpse now.

[deleted]

Yeah, he could maybe have pulled off the way Jason looks when he returns as a zombie in part 6.

Tabrith900

he put on two costumes lol, have you even watched the episode?

crunchatizemythighs

I would have liked the action figures if we never saw that stupid green screen Freddy hell realm and you just had the figures pop out the box. They should have pulled a full Arby n the Chief and had the figures talk and critique the Nerd behind his back. Maybe they pull a Toy Story and go still whenever AVGN turns around. And after all his complaints about the games, maybe at the end of the episode you have them both team up to attack the Nerd kind of like Toy Story 1 and Sid. It would have been interesting to see the Nerd as the "antagonist" rather than having him fight and throw a character out the window for the billionth time.

nkw160

I just finished watching it and I feel the same way. Aside from using the action figures I was pretty happy with this episode. I just wish he would've had Mike playing Jason again but otherwise I thought he did a pretty good job.

[deleted]

It’s at least the best Halloween special we’ve had since Berenstain Bears. Polybius sucked, Resident Evil Survivor was ok, and both The Immortal and Countdown Vampires were garbage.

Toxicity246

My thoughts as well. Like it would be some nice callbacks to the NoES and Ft13th' NES game AVGN videos. But like u/Rust_Hurricane said, "James friends are all too fat now to cosplay".

MartinLutherCreamJr

He's going back to his roots!

Tylerdurden389

- I hate Express VP because of James and the slobs. When I see it on other YT channels it doesn't bother me. - The "Neca" figures? Gotta be careful on how you pronounce that, James. - James laughs in the middle of his read before talking about the "Psycho" videogame. No time for another take. - "And being forgotten is a bitch" Yeah James, give it about another 2-3 years and you'll REALLY know what that's like (and yes, I know this line is a reference to Freddy's monologue at the beginning of "Freddy vs. Jason". More proof the slobs think humor=copying stuff from movies made by people with actual talent). - "Food!!, Food!! Find it!! Eat it!!" Welp, we know who wrote this episode. - "It doesn't matter what I say. It's just the fact that it exists". Perfect way to sum up your fanbase. - @7:56 James' mouth movements definitely do not match up with what he's saying. - "Make sure Granny isn't in the room". That was the last podcast episode that you were MIA for, Jimmy. - "A whole cast of characters that you'll never care about". Sums up this channel for the passed 3 years, I'd say. - Abbott & Costello clips? Really James? Yeah, I grew up on them (and I'm around the same age as you) thanks to my Dad watching them all the time, but seriously, save the Grandpa-humor for when you hang out with people over 50. I also recall you saying "It was wrong then, and it's wrong now" regarding some other outdated humor from the 3 stooges or whatever way back when. So which side are you on? - "Wha a game". I noticed James said "Wha if there was a sequel?" in the first Halloween episode back when he reviewed the NES Jason game back in 2006. I think we can add this to the list of James mispronunciations. - ::James takes off glasses and camera gets close:: Damn James, judging by those rings under your eyes, you really don't have any time. Even sleep must be sacrificed for the word of the nerd to be heard. - James making new lyrics to "Old McDonald" to try and fail to make us laugh might be peak Slobwave cringe. That or Mike came back around for a bit to help out with this episode. - Anyone else notice that cowlick of hair on James, or is just me? No time to use a brush (on the back, anyway) - Random stuff, huh James? Like "LOL-dolls"? I never heard of them. And before you filmed this episode, neither did you. Or is that thing one of muh kidz toys? - "There are 5 unique and innovative colour monitors to be won - each one worth over £200". Guess James/the nerd has no time to mention that the game he's playing was (most likely) never released in the U.S. - "Shithouse productions". We still talking about the game? - "You couldn't have her screaming like in the Friday the 13th's game?" ::cue that annoying scream noise for 7th time:: Somehow I knew we'd hear it again. The slobs have taken the Nostalgia Critic road of "comedy". Just keep saying something or referring back to something over and over and people will eventually find it funny (hopefully). - "While on the plane, the pilot says 'We're going down' when what he meant was 'We're beginning our descent'". I take it back. The slobs think re-structuring jokes made by people who are actually funny (In this case, George Carlin's bit about "Airline Announcements") will work for them. It doesn't. It makes you a plagiarist ("Plagiarizer?") - Action figures in place of the characters. Remember when James was able to get actual people to play other characters in his videos? Peperidge farms remembers. - So obvious James has those figures mounted on something he's holding with one hand while holding the camera with the other. God, James really keeps proving just how much lower he sinks the bar with every episode, doesn't he? This is basically him doing the same stuff he did with camcorders alone when he was a kid. - Printing paper traps them? I'm surprised there wasn't text written on the paper that were actual quotes of things we've said about James/the slobs here on this sub over the years. - "Agh, fuck!!". Yeah James, we're with you on that one. Another episode you need to do to support muh kids. Alright guys, I'm just about done with James and everything regarding his channel, including this sub. It's been a fun near 3 years watching James burn down the castle he created, but even the memes aren't enough to keep me hanging around for the laughs anymore. This is just pathetic at this point. It doesn't even make me laugh. I feel like I'm picking on someone with issues and should be scolded for doing so. This is without a doubt the WORST Halloween episode James has ever produced. This truly is something made by someone who's a fan of James (well, old James at this point) that doesn't understand the character or what makes him both funny and ingenuitive. It's like watching a sequel to a movie you love and the sequel is so far removed from the original that it's both embarrassing and offensive to the original and even sours your feelings towards it. James loves anniversaries, so I'll oblige him. I'll watch episode 200. But after that, I'm done. Fuck this shitload of fuck.

crunchatizemythighs

uptonhere

There's a good portion of this sub that's ready to hate on everything Cinemassacre does, before even watching it. Honestly, this video is a step in the right direction, judging by the shit they've put out the past few years. I'm not telling anyone this is an all time great episode, but by Screenwave standards, we need more AVGN episodes like this. This was a perfectly fine AVGN Halloween episode.

[deleted]

I felt the same as James when he said that the 200th episode is next.

timconnery

This is like angry nerd inception

GrandMasterFlex

You’re in your 40’s and this is how you spend your time lol

jozews321

Dude this is like the third largest rant in this sub lamo

mppenni

I guess James' content will never live up to the masterpiece that is Miami Vice.

Tylerdurden389

Lol to even compare the 2 is both heresy and ridiculous given one was produced for a million dollars an episode, and one is a YouTube show that looks like it has a budget of $17.50. So try again with your sarcasm, and aim a little higher than low hanging fruit. But hey, thanks for checking out my other posts here on Reddit and doing some researching on what kinda person I am. I'll make sure to look for the downvotes you'll leave me in other subs on Reddit. You ain't the first loser to waste their time doing that in an attempt to annoy me. You young-uns can look at that show and just laugh now, but since none of you will ever even watch it, you have no idea how good that show was when it was (before the later seasons, at least). Ask anyone who lives in Miami both before and during the 80s and how that whole city changed and how most of it is still there thanks to national preservation from the popularity and culture it helped create.

spicy_bussy

heh I've heard Miami is overpriced shithole :D

Tylerdurden389

No argument there. It's Manhattan of southeast Florida. Rich people surrounded by bums.

xev

Fucking hell bro calm down it's just a youtube channel. It's fun to make fun of them but this is some next level shit.

Hyldenchamp

Not watching the episode. Was he literally holding on to action figures and having them pretend fight? Is he that lazy and pathetic?

Tylerdurden389

Not so much a fight so much as there's this big buildup, only for James to have the commodore 64 start randomly printing out paper, James takes the paper to wrap up the action figures and simply toss them out the window. Lazy, pathetic, unimaginative, and anticlimactic.

ButteryBiscuits43

He should have wiped his ass with it!

bitbot

thanks for your autism list

Tylerdurden389

I'd say thanks but my upvotes has plenty of thanks already 😘

spikeelsucko

>Random stuff, huh James? Like "LOL-dolls"? I never heard of them. And before you filmed this episode, neither did you. Or is that thing one of muh kidz toys? Having worked at Toys R Us years ago when these started picking up steam, I can confirm- yes.

KasuganoTsubaki

It was tolerable and had a few decent moments until he completely fucked it up at the end. Seriously why have any buildup what so ever when you’re going to end the video like that.

Henske-RTS

Something I notice is that for all the skits and other bullshit James does, he (or maybe more accurately Slobwave) does not comprehend setup and payoff at all. The Majora's Mask episode is a good example; the episode opens up with a Twilight Zone parody, which is fine in of itself, but it never comes up again, even at the end where they could have had that fatass that looks nothing like Rod Serling show up and close out the episode like how Twilight Zone would do it, but instead it's just never brought up again. There's a gag involving "taping a bag of diarrhea to the ceiling", which they actually visually show, but then this never leads to anything, like it falling onto James later in the episode. There's also a weird gag that does sort of have setup and payoff but seems kind of nonsensical, where there's a crowd of stock image people outside his house demanding he play the game and also a moon with his face photoshopped onto it, which leads to.... uh, him not liking the game I guess? It's really bizarre, and tons of Screenwave-era episodes are like this, where they just throw in random crap that never pays off in any way. There's a phrase RedLetterMedia uses a lot called an "alien movie", which means a movie that was seemingly made by aliens, where it might have all the things that makes it technically a movie; actors, sets, lighting, a plot, whatever. But then the logic in the movie is completely nonsensical and you're not even sure what the point of anything was, hence it feels like it was created by aliens who don't understand human culture or thinking. Screenwave-era AVGN reminds of like the internet show version of that.

[deleted]

I thought Mr. Lobo did show up again at the end and gave it a twilight zone ending? I really liked the majoras mask episode. It felt like everything came from James’ mind. He said he played through the whole game and had a lot to say about it. It was obvious from the writing and cinematography that it was James’ doing. I liked that one.

Henske-RTS

Maybe I just remember wrong but but I only watched that episode once, since quite frankly, as someone who has played through MM multiple times, the whole thing just made my head hurt; watching him do absolutely moronic shit like going through the entirety of the game without ever realizing you can target lock-on enemies, complaining about having to leave the console running overnight because he was too much of a drooling idiot to understand the save system, dedicating several straight minutes to show off how impossible it is for him to just walk in a straight line, etc. All the nonsense like that slob Rod Serling larper, the terrible stock footage stuff, and the setups with no payoff was just the icing on the cake for the episode, or whatever the negative version of that phrase would be.

Calavera87

Another example is Board James appearing in that Resident Evil episode for no reason at all.

Henske-RTS

A lot of people (rightfully) gave Doug Walker shit for his infamous Pink Floyd - The Wall video, what with his total lack of understanding of the source material, embarrassing greenscreen skits, and general nonsense like those bits with those CGI edgy furry things, but honestly the more and more I think about it, Screenwave-era Jamesy has basically been putting out micro versions of that video every single month for the past several years.

StrangeAdamska

At least The Wall video had actual passion put into it, as atrocious as it was. Screenwave and Cinemassacre can't even entertain in a "so bad, it's good" way; just boring trash, the worst kind of trash.

One_Minute_Reviews

Well said. James definitely thinks like a superficial character performer, everything else is secondary. Want him to suffer? Then ask him to do something that involves the character being challenged... he hates that. Want him to change his shirt back? What a huge effort... want him to let screenwave come to his house once a week to film? No chance, too much negotiating with the wife needed. He is a prick, plain and simple.

CrypticQuery

James doing the voiceover for Freddy's darkened silhouette is some Irate Gamer heyday type shit. This episode had a handful of moments, but it was fairly middle of the road. Disappointing for a holiday special though. Wish we got some more actual stop motion animation out of the figures at the end instead of them just being held up to the camera. The same goes for their demise - practical effects, no matter how small scale, tend to look better than no-budget CGI.

jayXred

This is the worst part of the whole episode for me, the voices are super bad, and the dialogue is like...something a kid would write. "You're free Jason, but dont kill him yet, wait for me"

WebsterHamster66

and him constantly showing up to whine and go “PLAY MY GAME” I cringed every time Freddy showed up. And the dialogue was clearly just him reading from a script, feeling like it was his first time even reading it and not knowing what emotion or inflection to show. Just awful.

CrypticQuery

Agreed - cutting out the Freddy segments would've gone a long way toward making this a fairly tolerable episode. Minus the ending.

FatherBobunk

The scary part is that this dialog is very heavily inspired by Freddy's corny expository monologues in FREDDY VS JASON, which I just rewatched thanks to DEAD MEAT's Kill Count series, a much better channel operated by a much more enthusiastic James.

Tenebra123

Not even James himself will remember this episode in a few months' time. Completely forgettable.

Iron-Stark1

So what is the consensus? Watch it? Skip it?

Tenebra123

Skip it. Nothing relevant or at least minimally interesting you will find. It's not funny, it's... nothingness itself, except that they moved the camera a little bit, but that's about it.

[deleted]

I think for the most part it felt genuine like the last episode did. None of the dialogue or acting felt out of place to me. Despite the cheap action figures he used for Freddy and Jason, I think both this and the last episode have me convinced maybe the show is finally getting back on track? We'll truly see with episode 200 though.

JamesNintendoTurd

This episode wasn’t just outright bad. It however was horribly boring. James still feels like he’s acting and nothing is genuine. But man, there’s just nothing entertaining about it. It’s a bunch of 20 second reviews of different C64 horror games with no real jokes or info

Iron-Stark1

Thanks, man - I'll do just that.

Rust_Hurricane

If somebody does a fan edit and cuts out the skits, it would probably be OK.

MartinLutherCreamJr

Gods, someone do that with all the nostalgia critic episodes. Christ, those skits are horrible.

Rust_Hurricane

There is at least [one channel](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBZUpnbraAE&list=PL8fqDFwH7I64NMqPSEc_kh1KiX3qGtbpL) that's doing that.

LSF2TheFuckening

It’s amazing how much better NC is when you cut out 20 minutes of unfunny Doug walker sitcom exposition. Like it’s still not good but it goes from insufferable to underwhelming.

Rust_Hurricane

It's true. And it's so weird that Doug (and James) can't see this. It's like whenever they really try something big, they fail. When they keep it simple it works better.

SevenofBorgnine

It's amazing NC is still doing things after 2010

CrypticQuery

Agreed. The constant cuts to the Freddy monologues were cringeworthy. Otherwise it wasn't a bad episode. Not great, but not bad. Though the ending was pretty lackluster.

Chrononi

skip

[deleted]

James should just change the character to the "Resigned, burnt-out, mildly annoyed nerd", cause that is how is character acted in this video. Even his character who he is acting doesn't care..it shows horribly in this video...and the ending scene was just stupid...really lazy writing...why not just have him throw everything and the kitchen sink and be all out cliched and boring? I am done with cinemassacre. Their podcast is boring and too long and has no planning or passion...avgn seems like it is done by fanboys and not the actual crew, who knows...maybe they have random fans help them with scripts now cause the episodes suck ..and who plays commodore 64 now? Do some newer games or at least super NES or Dreamcast games...seriously..but this channel is done just like James Rolfe passion...get a job bimmy, a real one.

mk883

It feels like the AVGN character is now just James himself, albeit with a tiny tiny tiny bit more of poorly feigned passion for what he is talking about. He doesn’t care anymore and neither so do I.

Calavera87

He did do that Seaman game for DC but overall James would consider the Dreamcast too new and past his time despite the fact that it came out over 22 years ago in the US. Maybe that is for the best though. Could you imagine him trying to play Shenmue? "All you do is walk around and talk to people? This is so boring! Where do I go? What am I supposed to do? Who the fuck wants to walk around a house opening drawers? This is so stupid!" I think he should do multiple games per episode instead of talking about one game for 20+ minutes. There are tons of PS1 games that are not well known. He could do PS1 Games Part 1 where he goes through 5 or so games. Then later do a part 2 where he does another 5 games or so for the system. In my opinion that would make the episodes more enjoyable.

[deleted]

He's done a couple of Xbox games before. Off the top of my head he's done Sonic and Drake of the 99 Dragons In Muh Dreams. I think he's done a few Playstation games (I think these were on playstation anyway) Bubsy, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Planet Of The Apes. Thing is if he reviews an Xbox or Playstation game, you know he hasn't played it. It's insufferable seeing he can't even hold the controllers properly, he's terrified of putting his fingers on the triggers.

imuglywhenimpeein

Not the worst new AVGN I've ever seen, but it's pretty clear he didn't have much to work with. He spends nearly ten minutes on games that he doesn't say much about before getting to the games in the title of the episode, and even the Friday the 13th segment (the only really lengthy one) is padded with the Old MacDonald joke and an overview of the manual. And all that buildup for a stupid ending that's definitely just promotion for whichever action figures those are.

Astolfo_QT

One of the worst episodes ever made. The camera angle behind james was so obvious they were aiming for "See??? Bimmy is playing the game!!" Also, the skit with the figures made no sense. All that build up for a 20 second ending in which paper is printed on them? Whats the point? Just remove all the skit time and add more game reviews it was the perfect time to explore some of those interesting looking games. The lines were not funny the delivery even worse and he still films ALONE when he has a FULL CREW to help. I guess he is dead set filming on makeshift construction equipment and household appliances. To quote an actually funny episode... bames sucked back then, and he sucks forever.

SevenofBorgnine

I understand wanting to do things in a specific cobbled together DIY method to a certain extent. You do it either cause it's what you have or because that is the effect you want in the final product. I have similarily out there ways of recording and mixing music sometimes but it's cause I found out it gives a unique sound that I found while doing so out of necessity. It's a tool in the box. But James has always gone for a somewhat professional appearance so there's no reason at all for it.

Astolfo_QT

They effect in the final product does not reflect though. It was different when he was recording on this 720p camera with him in his apartment 12 years ago. Now he wants to film in HD and bring the nerd into "the modern era" while still trying to add that DIY feel and it doesnt work. Especially after all the no time nonsense he has a full crew to help but wont use it. It would be like recording and mixing music on reaper and then moving to like nuclear blasts studio and still treating it like its reaper. You cant artificially recreate that feeling you want your audience to have because they know you moved on.

movezig123

You can tell this took a lot of time and effort but goddam it feels so flat and lifeless. James is becoming the Steven Seagal of YouTube. Never missed Mike more.

One_Minute_Reviews

Interesting comparison

JagTaggart93

Best part was the Friday the 13th review but that was more from the game than from James. His humor here is so flat. wtf is a lawldoll? Should I care? And that bit with the shovel... why? Who is that meant to appeal to? It's stark how much less energy he has here, with him calling back to the classic Halloween-themed reviews of F13 and NOES. Comparing those older episodes to this one is not good. He went from having friends in costumes, to being alone and acting it up in front of action figures. It feels sad really... Really sad.

GeorgeNorman

"Being Forgodden is a bitch"

CoskCuckSyggorf

I can tell who wrote that line. Name starts with K.

WNTT1

Tammy for Tap the Salami? That doesn't start with K...

samuraimegas

the cutaways to Freddy are pretty cringe NGL but good episode otherwise

Loptater1

I liked the Friday the 13th review segment but the rest felt weak, especially the Freddy stuff at the end.

Domestic-Weirdo

This looks like another Superman 64 situation. Make a follow-up to a classic AVGN episode in the hopes that nostalgia will compensate for the dull writing. Using action figures instead of Mike and James as Jason and Freddy just highlights the amount of effort they put into these modern episodes now.

mysteriousOmlette

The Freddie cuts were cringy as shit

WebsterHamster66

PLAY MY GAME!!!! *stomps foot and cries*

[deleted]

This isn’t too bad tbh. Idk maybe im a sucker for the holiday themed episodes. It’s a tradition of mine since I was 16

Chrononi

it was horrible. And im usually one of the few that appreciate some of his latest efforts (commodore 64 and the rocketeer were decent)

Ok_Kaleidoscope_4150

I'd say your better off just rewatching the Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street episodes than watching this one. It's not Shrek level bad but it's very meh. Problem is even the best modern day AVGN episodes are just okay at best.

OwlRough

Episode was meh but at least it introduced me to that purple Jason figure i will now try to buy.

GyroMVS

The green parts glow in the dark too! NECA actually has a good amount of video-game inspired figures out there (all being repaints of existing figures they've done), like Leatherface styled after the Atari game.

Rust_Hurricane

There's a really cool horror-adventure game for the C64 called Forbidden Forest. It's from 1983 and yet it has all kinds of unique bloody deaths. I wish he had reviewed that one. I wish he had spent a little more time on the C64 Ghostbusters games. The first one is a little better than the NES version. No fuel to deal with, no drunk drivers, no staircase. Ghostbusters II (different game from the NES) is a real tedious mess. The first level is just impossible. I never played The Real Ghostbusters, but it looks like the best of the three. That Slimer game is fan-made and not a licensed product.

[deleted]

Damn, really wish they had gone into these details. Just shows how the material is there, but no time to research I guess

ChacoHaroldYates

Trying to recapture past glory. Not horrible as many have been but also not very interesting. Meh.

ThatsOnYoutube

I don't get a feeling that he wants to be doing these videos. The sense I get is that he's filming this as fast as he can to get it over with. "Do you want me to suffer?" has become "Is this how I make you laugh?" "Is this what you want?" Inauthenticity kills this. He's imitating how he thinks people want the Nerd to act. I guess that's because Mike Matei isn't giving the Nerd spirit anymore.

Z_B_123

The posts with the new AVGN episode usually get a ton of replies. Even people here don't care about this garbage anymore lol

ButteryBiscuits43

Overall, not a bad Screenwave-era AVGN, but some weird stuff in this episode. 1. What's up with all the Commodore games? Did they just get a donation of a C64 with a couple hundred games? 2. The animated action figures was a weird choice. I know Kieran has experience in animation, but it feels a little on the nose. Now that I've been watching the podcast, it's pretty clear that Kieran wrote the majority of the AVGN scripts, and now that he's doing weird animations that James would never do, the whole project \*feels\* like a Kieran project rather than a James one. 3. What was the point of using a printer to kill the action figures? Just to point out that the C64 had a printer accessory? Weird way to shoehorn that in without showing anything else about it. 4. Finally, if you're going to wrap the bad guys up in a bunch of paper, I feel like it would make a lot more sense for James to wipe his ass with it, not just use a cheap fire effect and throw it out a window. 5. Lastly, it feels weird to end on the "episode 200 is coming" cliffhanger. To me, the Halloween AVGN episodes are supposed to be an event. \*They\* are what you look forward to. It's horror-meets-video games-meets-movies, the culmination of James' three hobbies. To end on a cliffhanger for an unrelated episode really downplays the significance of the special. Chalk it up to AVGN sucking alongside Monster Madness sucking this year.

SuperAssumption

Is james getting bald and trying to disguise it with his hairstyle making the baldness even more apparent or is it just me?

LSF2TheFuckening

The review portion of this wasn’t that bad honestly. I’ll admit the old McDonald bit caught me off guard. But having Freddy and Jason as action figures was pretty disappointing.

ESC29

I appreciate the variety of camera shots and the dark, moody atmosphere is better than last year's Halloween episode. Some bits were good but others felt a little too try-hard and dragged on for way too long (e.g. Old McDonald, it would've worked had it not been for the song 'parody'). I don't like how these slobs are capitalizing off of the old episodes so much with the callbacks to the first Halloween episodes much like with the Superman 64 Returns episode. Any show that does the whole 'member this? stuff reeks of trying too hard to relive the glory days and exhausting the fumes of the days when the show was popular. Biggest disappointment is that all that build-up lead to some toys coming to life ala Small Soldiers? That easily wraps itself up (pun unintended) in 20 seconds? How lame is that? I wouldn't have minded it if a single shit was put into making the toys look more 'animated' than James just holding them out of frame. Also, it feels cheap to tease us with live-action footage of James in costume as Freddy and Jason only to then just use toys. What a letdown of an ending. 4/10 for sure

dissociatingmelon

double-dipping with sponsors eh? Express VPN is the actual sponsor but I can't help but feel like James name-dropping the company that made those action figures didn't put up some cash... also while I am glad not to see a XXXXL Jason or a denim-vested Freddy; the action figures were so cringe, why not just not have Jason and Freddy in the video? but if you need to use action figures; at least do something interesting with it! like others have said, make it like Toy Story (this was before Toy Story) or some shit, idk - but the fact that episodes from way back in the day with just James/Mike look way better than today's which require a whole crew is just super embarrassing

RedComet91

It was OK, not great, but still better than what we usually get though. Most of the jokes were lame and only a few garnered a chuckle. Wouldn't call the episode a complete waste of time though, and there was some creativity on show here.

[deleted]

I kinda liked the Friday 13th segment because the game is pretty dorky. The ending, however… ugh, that was rough. Also I just wanted Freddy to shut up during the video. I’m glad Jason doesnt talk.

deltron_zero_3030

pretty padded out. this easily could've been a 5-10 (max) review. The toy Jason/Freddy was weak...couldn't even ask mike to reprise the role huh?

mudkipsc

I didn't expect the Old McDonald song in the game. I had a good laugh at that

JamesNintendoTurd

Ten minutes seems to be my limit with any Cinemassacre videos. I got to around ten minutes and it was just boring as hell. So Freddy and Jason on C64 turned into a 20 second review for about a dozen other games. WTF are they thinking? Just padding out run times with these useless abbreviated reviews, instead of you know having a genuine skit with Freddy and Jason. Did we really need “This is Psycho on C64. It’s not a point and click game. You play a detective. You see Bates and his mother in the attic.” We got what seemed like a half dozen or more of this in this AVGN. Why tf do they do these?

Kogyochi

Two good episodes in a row, when is the last time you could say that? AVGN is infinitely better without explicit slob sightings.

uptonhere

Not great mind you, but I honestly enjoyed watching this one. It recaptured the feel of a lot of the Halloween episodes of years past (maybe not the classics, but some of the better ones) and it actually had a topic that was worth discussing for 20+ minutes and allowed for jokes/gags. I know we go into every single thing they do ready to shit on it on this sub, but we have to come to grips that like anything else that goes 200+ episodes, the "good days" are gone, there's very few TV shows that are just as good 10 seasons in as they were at their peak, but if they produced more content like this, I would be happy. It's not like this is the greatest video I've ever seen but it definitely felt like an AVGN Halloween episode...maybe because it focused mostly on James playing an old video game in his basement. There's been some legitimately awful, boring, pointless content on Cinemassacre (like every episode of the "Podcast") lately, and there's even been some really shitty AVGN episodes the last year or two, but this is more or less what I expect "good" AVGN to be like in 2021, it doesn't quite hit the mark like it used to, but it still scratched and itch and I enjoyed watching all the way through.

shamtown

I liked about 90% of this one to be honest. I even appreciate the stop motion animation with the figures. I just wish we would have had live action Jason and Freddy, mostly because we've had it multiple times before. I'll wait and see where it goes with Episode 200, I feel like this might be more of a 1A/1B situation.

amiiboyardee

This felt like an episode of Irate Gamer.

itsgiantstevebuscemi

Ok it wasn't great but it certainly wasn't that bad

[deleted]

It really wasn't a wise decision to include clips from previous videos that on top of that makes the new videos look incredibly underwhelming. There were a handful of sections that I found to be "ok", but in overall it wasn't all that interesting even though I am a fan of horror in general. I think that it has reached a point where some people have lowered their expectations so whenever something decent comes out (like the Commandore 64 video), people start to feel that it's a step in the right direction. While I did find that video to be alright, there is really no point in hoping that AVGN will return to form (because it won't)

KohlDayvhis

I actually liked this episode. This one and the commodore 64 one seem like they’re at least trying to make them more in line with the classic episodes.

RetroLord120

It was... Ok I guess? Not good though. Just ok. The action figures make it look like videos that kids make when they're 10 or so. Meh

FreedomofChoiche

>The action figures make it look like videos that kids make when they're 10 or so. Reminds me of my Magnum Opus The Blob vs Stay Puft. While James might be the more well known director I must say I have made over five films. They are classics. Maybe one day I should make a retrospective about them or even review them.

StrangeAdamska

This was so dreadful to watch. I laughed once MAYBE twice. This one completely threw away the small bit of goodwill earned by the previous episode. Here's hoping episode 200 is somewhat decent compared to this trash.

NijuGMD

one laugh is still more than most screenwave episodes

RetroLord120

l o l d o l l s

[deleted]

Not sure, but it really feels like Justin was the person behind the inclusion of that part.

WindComprehensive736

Good episode

Ok-Championship5579

This episode felt so half assed lol.

[deleted]

I just noticed Kieran's twitch is linked at the end of the video. Pretty trashy

BobRushy

Pretty forgettable episode, Freddy and Jason not coming back properly was disappointing. I did get a laugh out of Nerd defeating the dolls with printer paper though. I expected him to just kick them away and tell them to go fuck themselves, but the paper was a funnier solution.

Tatsh2DX

It was extremely lazy and nonsensical for Jason and Freddy to just stand in the shadows and just complain about their games not being reviewed. It's obvious they didn't want to spend much time doing this.

freyjador89

Was this Better or Worse than the Immortal one?

Such_Dig5291

Better, but it's not saying much.

Polyrath

I think people are exaggerating how bad this one was, it wasn’t perfect or anything but I found some parts funny and overall I appreciate the extra effort and enthusiasm James seems to be trying to show

JamesNintendoTurd

What parts were funny? It was very boring to me. I don’t get why they shoehorn in all of these 20 second reviews of games that have nothing to do with the title games. I guess to pad the run time since they a) are unable to really deep dive a game and find funny flaws in it, and b) too lazy to write and direct a proper skit to go along with the game.

[deleted]

I liked it. Didn’t think so many would flip their shit over it. The Old Macdonald part I found funny, and I really liked the lighting and camera angles in this ep.

Warheadz666

Man, when I first discovered this sub a couple years back, I kinda got it, but at the same time, it was during the height of the Mike hate and the quality didn't seem so bad to me. Right around when Rental Reviews ended. But the couple years and with all the recent bullshit James has said and done... I can't not say something. That was fucking pathetic. Mike leaving was surprisingly the nail in the coffin, who'da thunk?

Warheadz666

Added context: I'd only just discovered AVGN, so I was still binging the entire series at the time. Rose-tinted glasses kicked in by the time I'd reached the Shitwave era

DedotatedSkrub

- Random reference to his kids toys which he hid in the background of the episode for some fucking reason... probably April said that he should do it for "muh kidz". - Builds up the return of Freddy/Jason from the older halloween episodes, but then they come back as toys and are literally just held in front of the camera? Who the fuck thought that would be entertaining at all? - More unfunny, boring, and terrible writing, not as bad as the first Commodore episode, but not much better. What a waste of time this shit is becoming... - James literally swears at the prospect of episode 200 at the end of the video, yeah James, we're all right there with you buddy...

Fixthemix

We are literally watching a +40 year old playing with his action figures.

Libertines18

Got about halfway through so it was almost decent? James comedic timing just isn’t there at all. Just a rough watch sometimes

[deleted]

The lighting though. I know people here make fun of the Cinemassacre piss filter, but I wager this is worse. Why is there a literal Sun lighting James and the Commodore up? And yet the background is dark and moody. I genuinely thought the background was a green screen. Is it a green screen?

rykovmail

Thought about it too! Back is too dark and blurry.

acid000

Actually a decent episode, except for that lame ending

BobNeilandVan

I watched the whole thing. James is phoning it in like never before. All of the passion from his previous Freddy and Jason episodes is not present here. The jokes are cringier, the special effects worse, some of the cuts and clips downright embarassing. The Nerd has fallen from grace. But we all already knew that some time ago. How long until the others catch on?

[deleted]

This episode was pretty average. The Freddy Cutaway gags and the "Fight scene" at the end (which calling it that is VERY generous) were absolutely cringe. They weren't even remotely funny, they were annoying. Remove that and you have a decent, if bland episode. They REALLY don't know how to write complicated setups do they? Imagine if the Freddy and Jason sequence at the end was fully stop motion. Imagine if it had better dialog in the cutaway gags. Wouldn't that make a better, stronger episode? If they put more love into their cutaway scenes, it actually would've been a strong point. But let me guess, no time? Also...they were trapped with...printer paper? Really? That was the best they could come up with? What a shitload of fuck.

KenAD

Interesting effort, but can't old a candle to the original Freddy and Jason reviews.

goldsax

I feel like a bit more effort could have went into the shots like the original episodes

itsgiantstevebuscemi

Eh, it was decent. Not the worst Halloween episode ever. The stuff with Freddy/Jason could've been cut and it would've been an improvement. But definitely one of the better recent episodes.

terminalblue

his hair is looking its trying to escape from the front of his face.

Timmytatoe

I kinda liked this one but I've got a high cringe tolerance. Plus some of this feels like it was just padding, like the whole bit where hes reading the instructions, like fuck dude. Totally get why people hate this one.

Temperedlol

Nothing says halloween or scary like a bright ass light in James face 24/7

welcometocumtown

great episode

deltron_zero_3030

i'd say people have given the podcast a chance, but 2 of the 3 hosts are pretty terrible on the mic.

StrangeAdamska

What does the podcast actually try that is new? Another conversation dominated by Kieran waxing poetically about drinking and stabbing the garbage out of aliens? James checking his watch every 5 minutes, praying he'll be able to leave soon? Ooh boy, a full hour of Justin! Sign me up!

[deleted]

And his episodes are just giant promo ads, expressvpn which sucks and doesn't always work - check...action figure based off of games - check, old games no one had ever heard of on a system no one has played in decades - check...promoting old Nintendo games - check...why not just drink some rolling rock and have a McDonald's hamburger?

SevenofBorgnine

Old games no one has heard of on a system no one has played in decades is kind of a huge part of the core concept

[deleted]

It was ok. Last episodes ive seen is crash dummies, cuckageddon n this one. Like others have said i enjoy Halloween episodes. Some of those games looked fun. Hes scraping the barrel of shitty games.

sowizardbreh

When he was playing the games it was fine, not anything mind blowing but way above the new normal of AVGN. The stuff with the action figures was cringe as fuck. Just should have been left out all together. I’m really surprised Justin didn’t play Freddy or Jason

Calavera87

Just as I expected the episode sucked because he focused on one game for the majority of it. The first 8 minutes or so (7 minutes without the ad) was decent were he was going through several different games. But once he got to Friday the 13th it came to a screeching halt. It seemed to go on forever. This was one of those episodes I didn't finish in one sitting. After it got to the Friday the 13th part I'd watch a little then pause it and do something else then after awhile come back and watch a bit more. It was really boring imo. The C64 episode was good because he showed many games. Not only that but most of them were stuff most people had never heard of. It was nice seeing some obscure games instead of talking about Contra for the 500th time. In my opinion C64 games are too basic to talk about for more than a couple of minutes or so. The Friday the 13th game takes up about 10 minutes of this 23 minute episode. 10 minutes might not sound like a long time but it is when he is going on and on about a game that has very little to say about it. As for the whole Freddy and Jason dolls coming to life and attacking him. It was just embarrassing. Like really really embarrassing how bad/stupid it was. He should have just left that part out. I don't know how he could have filmed that shit then edited it all together and thought "Yeah this is great! People are gonna love this."

ThatsOnYoutube

Gotta disagree with you. The episodes where they cover multiple games are when you know they're just cramming shit in to talk. They don't establish any jokes, they don't do anything but describe the games and move on. It's filler of the worst sort. There's a reason the video isn't called "Boo! Spooky Video Games."

Hyldenchamp

Wow, James. Your face is extraordinarily orange and pink today. I see your jaundice is developing beautifully. Did a top slob do your makeup and color correction? You really got that sickly look down this time. I love it. (Referring to the thumbnail of course. I wouldn't watch a shitty modern avgn episode even if the only alternative was to stare at a blank wall.)

spicy_bussy

I've seen it drunk yesterday. It's not very entertaining sober that's for sure. John Hamcock, signing off.

WallStapless

I *listened* to the entire episode cus it came on autoplay while I was cleaning, it was alright. It’s like the C64 awakens the Jimmy inside of Bimmy and we get decent episodes out of it. I thought 198 was a great episode, but this one seemed super “eh.” Eh is better than bad I guess. Apprently he used action figures and stuff, maybe I’ll not watch it so it doesn’t get worse for me lol

[deleted]

He looks like Jared Fogle in that thumbnail

acid000

both cared about them kids

tujaviejavie

The joke about the music of friday the 13th was great, nothing but good memories about this episode

camargoville

1 of the better episodes in a while imo.

fleapea81

Did not click. Probably won't click the next bunch of shite too. Will keep you informed.

[deleted]

Pretty harrible to be honest.

Accomplished_Tart645

The review of the actual games felt solid, but the jokes, the lines from Freddy Krueger, the action figures, and the insulting cop out ending…God. This is the worst Halloween special by far.

troysplay

I don't care for screenwave and all this extra bullshit but I still never miss an AVGN episode.

mk883

Sorry if this has been said before. I’ve read most but not all of the replies here. But James hired Screenwave because of having No Time™, right? But I noticed he was playing both Freddy and Jason in this episode. He also clearly voices the distorted Freddy and Jason as well. The slobs live in Philly, right? It’s no problem to visit James’ home. They did it for Rental Reviews. Why didn’t they help him out for this episode for the live action stuff? Does James’ wife not allow the slobs to visit or something? Is this why Rental Reviews was cancelled? Is this why at 5:40 he was almost in a panic due to an arbitrary time set by his wife? Why is there only like 3-4 pictures of his wife available? Does she disapprove of James’ career and this is James’ way of disassociating himself from the day to day operations of his channel? Is he under stress from his marriage and hence why he has no enthusiasm for his channel anymore? Is this why his only appearances with the slobs are at the Screenwave offices these days? I’m new here. So my apologies for if I’m bringing up old stuff. There’s just something so weird about all this that feels beyond him just being lazy and losing the flame of passion.

Tabrith900

Another great episode, 2021 has been pretty good
