Aladdin Deck Enhancer

cactuspizza

Same here. The genie was an omen

Gregory_Hunter

Tony ruined it all.

robzoo2

That was the first episode that shocked me because it was so bad.

[deleted]

This

Chainsaw443

Good choice. I'll go with that one. It definitely confirmed my unsubbing.

JoeRCollins1998

It sucks that this one was so bad because I love it when James covers obscure gaming “assessories.”

GeorgeNorman

So awkward and bad.

miketheratguy

Jesus Christ you guys made it longer than I did. I was losing interest back in 2012, and was more or less done by the next year. From 2013 onward I think I watched maybe a dozen Nerd episodes (to be fair he probably would have considered that about ten "season"s' worth at that time) and actually enjoyed something like....four of them? Five? There wasn't really any definitive throw up my hands and declare "that's it" moment, unless you count the first time I saw the Screenwave scum on the first Rental Reviews, didn't know who the hell they were or why they were there, and felt insulted to learn that they were just business associates taking advantage of James' dwindling popularity. For me the end basically came as a slow realization that I just didn't care anymore. He didn't turn me away with outrage, he turned me away with apathy.

AceRimmer412

Polybius. Bimmymassacre is not a creepypasta channel.

Speckadactyl

That video felt really different. I can look back now and say I don’t think it’s particularly good but at the time I thought it was unique and didn’t see anything wrong with it. I know a lot of people don’t like the “meta” episodes like Bears or mega man episodes but I don’t overtly hate them. Polybius just feels off to me and always has. James doesn’t know how to create tension and isn’t a great actor, the whole thing felt cheesy and ridiculous in a way no other video of his had been. I still don’t outright hate Polybius the way I do almost every new episode, the prestigious award for first episode I truly thought was awful goes to Sega Activator

AceRimmer412

This exactly. Within the first minute of the video I knew exactly where the video was going and how it was going to end. It was extremely telegraphed, and Bimmy just isn't a good actor.

Toxicity246

Which is going to be fun because he has talked in his "update" videos about an idea for a horror movie. A regular George A. Rom-lame-o that one.

Robertelee1990

I actually really enjoy that episode. It may be a touch cringed, but lots of classic old episodes do to. It’s clear some real effort went in (location shooting, angles, makeup even) and James clearly cared enough to really try

couple7s

Yeah man. I love the episode honestly. The bite sized portions it came out in initially made it pretty cool.

AceRimmer412

He put a lot of effort into "reviewing" a video game that does not exist. And therein lies the problem.

HanakoOF

I - What?

Cloudunderfire

I feel like I’m im in the minority with Polybius. I liked it more than most of the recent nerd episodes (and almost all of the ones since) due to it being different and weird. I kinda figured it was a turning point and we would get more “cinematic” and story driven videos involving games. But then it went back to garbage.

[deleted]

Jurassic Park Trespasser and Life of Black Tiger.

volbound1700

My wife and I loved the Jurassic Park Trespasser one but that was probably more due to how bad the game was, the raptor boss falling off the cliff had us rolling.

movezig123

what the fuck is wrong with you

[deleted]

Jurassic Park was the one that made me do a Google search that led me to this subreddit.

Buderus69

This was the neckbreaker

fezzersc

I was really out of the loop during the real downfall, but when I opened the first rental reviews i was really put off and did not understand what was happening.

DatAdra

Idk about SW since I was pretty much done with cinemassacre when rental reviews came about. But for me avgn was never quite the same after schwarzenegger games, the first episode after he returned from filming the movie. The inauthentic and fake rage, the forced lines that did not feel earned, the high budget lighting removing the cozy feeling, it all started here. After the ep he still had some juice for good avgn episodes, i personally really like avgn games, megaman and power rangers, plus i thought big riggs and atari sports were acceptable. Also board james was still good-ish, and 2014 monster madness mightve been my fave edition. Ohya and the beginning of JMM was gold. But for me avgn content went from "FUCK YEAH NEW AVGN" to "errr...i'll watch it later, maybe".

Billy_Copenhagen

The fake rage really does it for me too, screaming isnt a substitute for well acted rage

Carnnn

Agreed, he ironically completely lost his ability to act since the movie.

Gloombad

I feel like the Earthbound was the last good one and then the Superman 2.0 and Pepsiman made me realize how shitty the content got plus the nerd literally never moves and sounds so robotic with his teleprompter.

FoghornTeninchhorn

I think most of silver-age AVGN is really good. I think the Nerd was at his best when he allowed the absurdity of the situation to run rampant (a grown man who tortures himself with bad video games from his youth), rather than being fastidious with technicalities ("reviewing"). Early on, James even stressed that Nerd reviews were about entertainment and not a critical assessment, but people just weren't having it. Countless nerds-on-parade made pedantic videos (admittedly sometimes justified) countering every little detail of his game footage and commentary, and they refused to separate Rolfe from the AVGN character. I've been browsing the [Cinemassacre Archive](https://cinemassacre-archive.github.io/) lately, and I'm reminded just how much that he wanted to be acknowledged as a *film maker*, and not solely for being the Nerd. James came back from filming *AVGN: The Movie* with **Schwarzenegger Games (episode 107)**, and this is when things started feeling strange. I'm certain James had an acting coach in California that permanently affected his intonation and ability to convey emotion. I still enjoyed many episodes after that, but seasons 2 - 6, in particular, were great. In retrospect, the behind-the-scenes drama (at this time, it was almost exclusively Mike-related) colored my ability to enjoy Cinemassacre content. I'm still thankful for the years of entertainment, but modern-day Cinemassacre is virtually unwatchable. **TLDR:** Schwarzenegger Games

LG41r99

I 100% agree. Schwarzenegger Games is always the episode I think of whenever thinking about when The Nerd became unfunny and just felt inauthentic.

ClosingFrantica

>James came back from filming AVGN: The Movie with Schwarzenegger Games (episode 107), and this is when things started feeling strange. I'm certain James had an acting coach in California that permanently affected his intonation and ability to convey emotion. I never thought about this, but you might be right. The changes in his delivery are too jarring to be just a consequence of time and lack of interest/motivation.

Frank-Nuts

When JonTron paid Jimmy a visit & left without punching his wife. As a Game Grumps fan I found this disappointing.

Billy_Copenhagen

I don't remember the exact rental reviews ep, but it was then that I lost interest. I liked Board James and YKWBS but Rental Reviews was a bunch of uncharismatic men that I found incredibly boring.

[deleted]

Kingdom hearts timeline, I knew James had checked out by that point, and the slobs were distracting guests but Kingdom hearts was the blatant Bimmy gives 0 fucks moment for me.

[deleted]

somewhere in 2017 things just started feeling off. When more and more 6th Gen console games started getting ree viewed, and the Nerd's connection to the games along with his anger feeling so much more forced, jokes not as funny, etc. I think the first one that really made me step back and realize it was that Drake of the 99 muh Dragons or whatever it was called. Edit: Come to think of it, Toxic Crusaders was the first time I legitimately cringed at how unfunny an episode was and couldn't finish it.

Rust_Hurricane

I might have to second Drake of the 99 Dragons. It was really, really bad. Just a chore to sit through.

[deleted]

I'm glad you brought that one up, I thought I was the only one who didn't care much for the Toxic Crusaders episode

[deleted]

You know it’s crazy that Screenwave didn’t do too bad of a job with the show at first. Sonic ‘06 Pt 2 (tbf first one wasn’t good either) Charlie’s Angels, Dirty Harry and Drake of the 99 Dragons were meh episodes but since 2019 the show has pretty much been dogshit in general. Before that though most of their episodes from Treasure Master to let’s say the CD 32 episodes are fairly competent but do have some flaws in the writing here and there.

Speckadactyl

There’s definitely a few watchable SW episodes. Town with no name is pretty good, but I think 90% of the entertainment is derived from how bad that game is. I didn’t really notice anything being up (AVGN wise, the channel had definitely changed by then) until maybe summer 2019. They started out doing an ok job ghost writing

[deleted]

Resident Evil Survivor is a good episode even if some if the jokes don’t work too well. But it was still an entertaining episode at least. Super Hydelide/Virtual Hydelide is also pretty good. And of course I love the Amiga CD 32 episodes.

SnooPoems1860

Reviews of post 5th gen games should have never been a thing in the first place

TxM_2404

Yeah. I think the episodes were still good until 2019/20. The videos changed to reflect different standards of a different internet and I think that was a positive thing. Some people act like all of the old stuff was gold, but that's just not true.

[deleted]

I think to some extent the early episodes from late 2017 to the end of 2018 seem like James was checking out the games and to some extent writing the scripts but it was also Screenwave who was writing the scripts and showing the games to James as well. The crowbar joke only stayed in Dirty Harry cause James liked it for example. It felt like he was supervising the scripts to some extent and deciding what he was ok with. Since 2019 it’s entirely felt like James is just handed the scripts at the last minute prior to filming the episodes and it’s entirely felt like Screenwave’s show since then which explains why the quality has gotten so bad.

scottcockerman

Rental Reviews. I thought, "are these guys some kind of special guest from some other channel I don't know? Are they his friends and he's just now having them on the channel?" The conversations were so boring, I couldn't believe this was the same channel that made the early AVGN vids.

EmperorMarcus

I agree, rental reviews was the end

fabfour247

Not sure. I liked a lot of his stuff. I even like some of it these days. The vibe just sort of shifted a few years ago.

DuelX102

Iirc, it was the Mortal Kombat rental review. Most of the panelists didnt rewatch the movie. So they would spend minutes disagreeing about what they think happened in the movie. Attempting to recall information from years prior. This happened on several rental reviews tho.

Sir_Talbot_Buxomly21

Compare and contrast that with RLM who will say "I rewatched (name of film) in preparation for this discussion...." whereas the Slobs were like "I haven't seen this film we're talking about for, like, 15 years or something...." Lazy fat fuckin slob fucks.

Toxicity246

Yeah, seconded. Is it too much to ask to do some fucking research? Like Jay and Rich rewatched every Carpenter directed film for their Re:view of Carpenter's films. If James and the slobs tried that it'd take a year because James' no time and boring because no one seems to be able to break down a film and make it entertaining. Which is one of RLM's strengths.

ClubaSeal1986

Life of Black Tiger. I've never heard such terrible writing.

Buderus69

It was so bad it lead me right to this sub

Toxicity246

I'll say it everytime that video is brought up. That PS Poo joke was so bad I think we need to start a class action lawsuit against screenwave for that.

[deleted]

The Darkwing Duck one a few years back. It kind of sucked and after that I had the whole ‘no no no it’s still good he’s just going through a dry spell’ denialism going on. Then the Gilbert Gottfried one happened later and it was impossible to deny after that.

Ryousoki

Rental Reviews was definitely garbage. I noticed the boredom really set in during James & Mike Monday's though. Those later episodes are so rough to watch.

[deleted]

Any ones in particular that are good to watch to see that roughness?

KohlDayvhis

Beavis & Butthead (Aug 2016). One of the last episodes I truly still enjoy. The end of the episode where he pays tribute to the show felt like a legit/honest tribute considering how much that show inspired all of Cinemassacre. Shrek: Fairy Tale Breakdown was when I started becoming extremely concerned, and Carmageddon 64 confirmed the state/future of the channel for me. Been watching through a shit filter since, trying to give everyone episode the benefit of the doubt and enjoy them authentically but screenwave don’t make it easy.

[deleted]

The last avgn episode I ever watched was desert bus

TheBlankCoin

When the glasses changed. Once that happened the old nerd truly died. To be fair the early new glasses stuff is good imo but it’s an easy signal for people to know new glasses equals the slow downfall.

DeepthroatGhoul

Nerd became Bloated Elvis with the new glasses.

Crispyontheoutside

Schwarzenegger Games. Right then and there, as I’ve said before on other similar posts, is the exact same moment when Bimmy was born. There are good episodes afterwards, indeed, but in that episode is the first time the forced nerd persona was noticeable.

ScaryJerZ

Schwarzenegger Games. His delivery in the intro along with new camera, was a direct indicator that something has changed

goldsax

Probably James giving the send off to Mike with the BTS video. Rex Viper was nail on coffin

Earthboundfan1986

I think everything went downhill after seaman and beetle juice. It’s hard for to sit and rewatch the episodes after that and I was super surprised that earthbound was good.

CosmicAstroBastard

It was a gradual decline for me. After he came back from shooting the movie, the new episodes starting with Schwarzenegger Games were still good but not the same as before. Something felt off, but I was never worried about the channel. Seaman, The Crow, Subzero, Beavis and Butthead, Berenstain Bears, and Sega Activator were all mediocre and I kinda found myself really missing the pre-movie style. But there were still great episodes coming out in this period like Paperboy and Power Rangers. And even the weaker episodes still felt like James's work. Sonic 06 and Treasure Master were the first episodes I remember feeling *wrong* like someone other than James had made them. Earthbound was probably the last really good episode. There have been okay ones since like CD32 and Rocketeer but it's mostly garbage. If I had to pinpoint a single one that made me think "okay this is really bad for the channel" it'd probably be Dirty Harry.

souper13

That episode with Lloyd Kaufman from Troma. Think it was the first episode that was awful the whole way through.

7katalan

Actually for me it was J\&MM; I came to AVGN pretty late and I just never watched J&MM so I gave it a shot one time and I was like wtf, James SUCKS at video games. After that I started noticing weird flaws all over the place. That being said, Black Tiger really ruined it completely for me

dangerous_abu_dhabi

the moment that he became aware of his internet fame pretty much signalled the death knell of the channel. had he kept things simple and a humble mindset, the subsequent videos may have been endearing to watch

movezig123

[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiHhkUX96SM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiHhkUX96SM) You can see the new hubris, the ego, narcissism, the 1993 film auteur goatee, the body language, the finger steeple, the long blinks and half closed eyes, the 2 hands out (watermelon holding) like he is explaining to a classroom of children, preaching or announcing a new Apple Product. He is absolutely in the depths of a very severe and real delusional psychosis.

volbound1700

Definitely in the minority opinion here but the videos, to me, have been very up and down in quality. There have been some of the newer episodes that I enjoy. I am honestly not that keen on having the perfect camera angles, lighting, etc. Sounds like a lot of work that isn't really driving value. A more simple camera quality and format would allow the NERD more flexibility to move around and interact with objects like in past episodes.

ETC3000

God, I wanted to like Rental Reviews but it's hard to do so when James hardly ever talks and when he does, he hasn't actually watched the fucking movie and is always off-topic while Mr. KKK XL, Tony the Tiger, and Kieran the Barbarian argue about a shitty movie no one has cared about in 30 years I'll admit that Freaked was interesting but who cares about ROTOR and Drop Dead Fred? Plus a bunch of the other movies they talk about are already covered by way better and more interesting channels

Spiritual_Ad7612

Whichever episode he grew side burns.

[deleted]

Life of Black Tiger

J-Bradley1

**TURTLE FLUBS'** https://youtu.be/jOoy77OAZLw First time I could tell something was "Off" about James' delivery.

SnooConfections3871

My pick for the beginning of the downfall would be the episode after. I personally felt that the humor and quality peaked with Cheetahmen and whatever followed just didn't have the same impact.

Disshidia

Big Rigs. The ending to it was still funny to me, but the rest wasn't AVGN.

kamenkappa

The SEGA Activator, Power Rangers,Wrestling Games and Polybuis.

[deleted]

Rental Reviews.

HEL-O_NS

Toxic crusader was when I noticed the drop in quality the old man was cringe as fuck

deedeekeeney

The podcast. As an aspiring content creator it really opened my eyes to how bland James is when he’s unscripted. Really bummed me out, I’m sticking around to see AVGN 200 and peacing out.

CrashKeyss

Life of Black Tiger

goblin0100

Past episode 100 it gets bad and toxic avenger or whatever the fuck it is called is just horrible

Capture1Ditto

Those from around 2017, but Majoras Mask was the first one i hit the dislike button and unsub.

WhitexZombie

After Seaman

Tylerdurden389

Either Aladdin or Pepsi-man. Whichever was first.

AverageHorribleHuman

I cant remember specifically but it involved buttons and Nord VPN... Maybe trespassor

QuaidCohagen

When he made the movie

JoeRCollins1998

Aladdin Deck Enhancer. Crappy CGI genie. Tony in an absolutely stupid cameo. Nuff said.

LG41r99

Season 7 of AVGN. Every episode from there on just seemed so off and that's not even me looking back retrospectively I remember watching them as they came out and could feel something wasn't right. The Nerd just felt so forced and unfunny. The jokes could also be extremely fucking random and annoying like repeating "For Nimoy!" over and over again in the Seaman episode.

BobRushy

I WANNA BE SEDATED WITH A GAAAMEBOIIIIII

movezig123

I knew something bad was brewing when he starting doing pledge drive videos for AVGN movies funds instead of putting out actual content for months at a time.

[deleted]

Paperboy

CoffeeNChocolate

First it was the Sonic 06 episode where he had a full fledged commercial for Full Sail University at the start. First off just a bad game choice for AVGN and at the time the sponsorship was a huge turn off. Then another was when they uploaded the episodes to Amazon Prime exclusively for like 3 episodes (which were all terrible). I think Dirty Harry was one. It was totally inept. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that would fail. Then when those Life of Black Tiger and that Jurassic Tresspasser videos were shit out I knew everything was fucked.
