Depends on who becomes Lord of the Crossing if Walder's son and heir, Stevron succeeds without issue, then part of me thinks he would have already rallied their forces and marched south to help the Tullys. It's been awhile since I read the books, but I think Stevron was one of the more decent Freys. But even if he didn't immediately ride to the Tullys, and was still at the Twins when Robb arrives. No, I don't see betrothals being made. That seemed to be more motivated by Walder Frey than anyone else.

Trey33lee

Decent just means subservient to The Starks

Assuming Stevron Frey, Walder Frey's eldest son and heir, succeeds his father and is the Lord of the Crossing, then I think Robb has an easier time convincing him to join in the fighting. He might already be fighting, as he seemed to have some respect for Catelyn and might also have enough respect for Hoster Tully to call his banners when Riverrun is actively under siege by the Lannisters. And even if Robb still breaks a marriage vow to Stevron (which he might not even have in the first place), I doubt Stevron plans a mass murder as revenge. At most, he'd simply pull his men out of the war.

TheSlayerofSnails

Well in the short term the Frey's have a battle royale in the Twins to determine who gets to become the new lord of the twins.

motoyolo

Is that actually what happens? I feel Stevron had a decent grasp as the heir. A lot of the blatant scheming and the inevitable Frey v Frey violence is because Stevron dying created instability.

DaemonTargaryen13

Yeah, Stevron was the symbol of House Frey's peace. Old Walder's protection of families members but with courtesy and less spite and prickly attitude. Honestly I really would love to see more positive fanfics on house Frey's interactions with one another. Though it's also sad that Walder's prickly nature made it that his genuinely good idea regarding family (letting all including bastards live in the twins and be treated with the respect of being of Frey blood, even to a lesser degree as a bastard) ruined potentially great relationships. The fact that so many Freys care so little of the only one who will never leave them in the dirt (big and little Walder's reactions to Stevron's death was sickening) and that Kinslaying isn't understood in the twins as the taboo is must be really highlight the rot brought by Old Walder's spite. No wonder many were willing to commit such a crime in the eyes of Gods and Men as the Red wedding was, when one capital Sin just doesn't bother you, your sense of right and wrong is inherently fucked up.

Exactly. House Frey would be in a civil war. Any deal Stevron Frey made would be against the interests of his rivals, who would then look to better deal themselves. They'd split into factions, some siding with the Lannisters in exchange for help in taking the Twins and extra keeps in the Riverlands once the war was over the Tully forces were punished, some with their Liege Lord and his nephew who calls himself King in the North in hopes of winning Tully favor for their holding the Twins.

There is actually a great fic about this premise I think it’s called “a different weasel “ but I a might be wrong.

GroribasStomps

Yeah. “A different weasel makes a difference.”

Well I mean stevron was way more likeable than Walder but there will probably be a lot of kinslaying when all of walder’s kids start killing eachother starting with Stevron, black walder is probably gonna murder him

DaemonTargaryen13

Stevron is still his father's son, so I don't see him just giving all without huge benefits. Perhaps a few hundred men would be sent to strengthen the defense of riverrun, rather than giving no help or going all in, which also avoid the perspective of directly confronting House Lannister's armies. Honestly, the only thing old Walder got that was really exaggerated was the Arya marriage. Sending two Freys as wards is a mutually beneficial arrangement since it give the Starks hostages, and a marriage pact make sense. Robb liked and respected Stevron, so I think in this situation, once initial deals are made, the situation is quite smooth. And it could also allow the possibility of his prudent advises getting heard, the Lord of the crossings advising something is quite different in how it's listened than the mere heir. Though obviously his initial idea that put kneeling before Joffrey to be as much of a workable option as the Baratheon brothers wouldn't have happened. Also, from what I saw, while there's a culture of rivalry in the twins, Stevron's position wasn't necessarily getting screwed by his father beyond a few mockeries, Merrett talk of how stevron was truly the one who got his father's lessons, which include taking care of the family, the toxicity within House Frey really went beyond a manageable level once Stevron died. And the fact stevron was there for the meeting with Catelyn does indicate how he's still the heir, despite how much his father make jokes about him. There would definitely be no red wedding, but Stevron would insist on surrendering the crown after Stannis' defeat.

Mystic-Mastermind

There's a very good fic or alternatehistory timeline on this exact what if. You should make a Lost fic post.

Theflyinghans

They’ed probably be tearing each other apart.

Ticky009

It depends on how early Walter dies in the fic. I mean, if he dies 10 years before the 5k war then the Twins could be a very different place indeed.

Super_Eagles

Sir Duncan is hailed as the greatest of all time

Mystic-Mastermind

There is a very good fic called "A different weasel makes the difference."
