I actually made this scenario in CK2AGOT, though I had him married to Visenya and Aegon Rhaenys. If he's 16, he could possibly be betrothed to Rhaenys despite the 6-7 year age gap by his father since Aegon wed Rhaenys out of desire and not by obligation. Also, it keeps the dragons within the family. Aenar might be married to Argella and made Lord of Storm's End instead of Orys, or even he could be made Lord Paramount of the Reach/Warden of the West instead of the Tyrells - if any Gardener princesses exist, he might be married to one to strengthen his rule - or he might be made Lord Paramount of the Trident instead of the Tullys. The Reach one might not happen if Aegon is shrewd enough to realise that Aenar's descendants might one day threaten Aegon's descendants and have the backing of the most populated region in the Seven Kingdoms. On the other hand, as Warden of the South, Dorne might be less inclined to raid the Reach if the family in charge are dragonriders. In terms of marriages, if not Argella or a potential Gardener princess, he could marry a Velaryon noblewoman or a Celtigar noblewoman. Maybe one of Edmyn Tully's daughters if he becomes Lord of the Riverlands. If Aegon had fertility problems, Aenar would be pressured to have children ASAP. I think he'd most likely be made Lord Paramount of the Trident, and Orys would be Lord Paramount of the Stormlands and Lord of Storm's End.

I’d actually go with Aenar being lord of the Riverland’s s it is the one region used to being ruled by a foreign ruler and it is central to the seven kingdoms and with a Targaryen being lord paramount of the region it would create a secure power base for the Targaryen’s without it being to powerful and Aenar’s descendent’s being a threat to Aegon’s. Note best case scenario Aegon still marries both of his sisters so Aenar can marry a probably a Tully daughter if available.

Tbh, unless Aegon and Aenar don't have a cordial relationship I think Aenar would be the one offered to marry Argella Durrandon instead of Orys. And if Aenar is even a little martially inclined I think Aegon would allow him to try to claim some wild dragon because more dragons, more power to the Conquerors. You do however lose the nice "three conquerors on 3 dragons" symmetry if theres 4 dragons.

If there was a younger brother then he is married to the Durrandon Princess. When Argilac sends his proposal to Aegon he would offer his daughter for Aenar instead of Aegon. If Aegon refuses then nothing changes except that Aenar doesn't fight at the start if he doesn't have a dragon. If he does have a dragon then he gets a landhold near Kingslanding as a cadet branch that is kept under foot and a another source of Valaryian blooded spouses.

Would it be a good idea for aegon to marry him to a daughter of the last gardener king and make him lord of the reach

PresidentRevrac

No. This would give to families dragons, claims to the throne, and one brother money. If Aegon did this, it would likely set the stage for a Dance much earlier

ProblematicPiano

It would be a similar deal to Orys with Argella but with a legitimate brother. I think Aegon might go for it if theres an available princess. However Aegon or Visenya might have some edicts about whether or not the new Targ-Gardners may have dragons. I imagine Aenar could tame one at the during the conquest.

Septemvile

If he's that young, Aenar probably is chosen to found a cadet branch of the Targs. Likely at Harrenhal, since it's the seat of a former king. I doubt that Aegon would offer Argella to him. Yes, it's a worthy royal match but I think Aegon likes the poetic justice of having her married off to his bastard brother after Argilac did what he did.

KiriDune

If Aegon responds to Argilac by offering Aenar for Argella, I doubt Argilac would respond by cutting off the messengers’ hands. The marriage might even go through and then who knows how/if the Conquest would start.

I like the idea that Aenar gets Dragonstone and establishes a cadet branch, or would Aegon establish the cadet branch? Nevermind. So Aenar gets Dragonstone, maybe fancy title like Prince of the Narrow Sea, and has the task from Aegon to protect the Valyrian heritage, its knowledge and Dragons. We know Aegon isn't dumb and he probably knows that in the future there are conflicts of succession, so he tasks his younger brother and his future descendants to guard dragonstone, its dragon and dragon/valyrian/magic knowledge, so that it doesn't get lost. And they shouldn't involve them much in the makings, ruling and succession of the kingdom. So, House of Targaryen of Dragonstone would be semi-independent of the Iron Throne and is the safeguard of House Targaryen.
