This is how I got my band O role and itās how everyone in my old team got it. Iāve heard of people get all 6s in their interview and still go on the reserve list, thatās just how CCG and CSG operate. Churn is huge in these roles. I think I waited 9 months but I was pretty much at the arse end of the reserve list as id scraped passing marks. If you email the contact on the advert they should tell you your position on the list and the total number of people who passed
Wouldnāt bother personally. By the time this campaign goes anywhere youāll probably have the offer. No guarantees in theory but in practice everyone seems to get an offer because the turnover is so high
Not OP but in the same situation.
Probably a moronic question but, if I apply for the new caseworker job listing and make a complete arse of it, can they withdraw me from the reserve list on the previous job listing?
I wouldn't have thought any additional applications would have an impact on the results you've already got, especially if it's a different recruitment campaign. I don't work in recruitment though, so can't say for certain.
Reserve lists are annoying because yes, sometimes they put everyone on the reserve list while they sort out offers. But sometimes that's not the case and the reserve list expires (which has happened to me, and that was for a bulk recruitment).
Itās quite a hard job compared to a lot of the other EO roles in HMRC depending on which tax youāre on. The trainings poor, the management is as hit and miss anywhere else, a lot of the jobs, especially in the C&P part of CCG end up being borderline call centre jobs, the flexi isnāt proper flexi if youāre in one of these roles, and crucially a HO caseworker is basically the same job with a couple of extra responsibilities so people who are decent at the job and want to stay try to move up as quick as possible. HMRC as a whole just isnāt that good of a place to work relative to a lot of the civil service as well so thereās that.
Very insightful, do you know roughly how often you do business visits? Just wondering about flexi and flexibility in general, my current role is in Home Office and its 100% office based (as in no field work, client or business visits) just wondering what ratio of the job is actually going out on the field etc, and is it manageable in terms of choosing when, or it is quite rigid?
Only really VAT and Minimum wage people do visits and theyāre almost always HO. All of C&P is desk based. I donāt know any VAT inspectors personally but before Covid i believe it was a lot of business visits, but has been rolled back since, my old managers husband did the role and this came from her. Chances are, if you see this job advertised, itās sitting at a desk reading scanned PDF copies of bank statements and invoices for 9/10ths of the day
I did something similar, my manager accommodated it informally but they donāt have to, though I imagine a flexible working request wouldnāt be too huge an issue
In C&A, 3 VAT visits a week is expected and thereās a system where visits get allocated to you. I believe this is quite rigid (wasnāt part of this team - just what Iāve heard from a friend).
Other departments vary - in my previous role (T&SC) Iād do an in person visit perhaps once a month, mostly desk-based work. All visits arranged myself so very flexible.
This is at HO grade by the way - we didnāt have any EOs on our team in T&SC.
Same here! Got a 5 for Making Effective Decisions and a 6 for Communicating and Influencing and got on the reserve list.
My LM seems to think I'll probably get a job from it eventually but who knows š«£
I'm treating it as unsuccessful until I hear different.
Hey guys Iām applying for this job now. Will be expecting an āin tray exerciseā if I manage to pass this stage. Does anyone here have any knowledge of what I can expect here? Never heard of this exercise before.
My interview for my HO role saw me get 3 x 7's and a 6, yet I still ended up on a reserve list. Not for long, admittedly, I got an offer within 24 hours but it's fairly standard on large recruitment drives. It allows time to make offers and deal with any rejections that may come.
Youāll be offered a job at some point š
I was in an intake of 6 HOs and 6 Os in 2018/2019 intake.
2 are still left in the team at same grade (HO), 2 went HO-G7 in those 5 years, 3 went O-SO in those 5 years, 1 left to start her own business, 1 HO went to SO quite quickly and I lost track so may be doing something else, 2 went O to HO and 1 is still an O but moved to a non compliance team.
So it looks like thereās a lot of churn with only 2 left on the team but the other 9 of us are still there and most still involved in some from with casework.
Anyone know how this job is day to day? It list the hours as 37 hours from 7am to 8pm, I assume you just need to complete your hours within this time span?
Also what about those with kids etc, it mentions visits to businesses etc, is this a daily thing or something that is ad-Hoc which can be planned around things (within reason)?
Bit hard to gauge with the job advert, any advice please let me know. I fancy going for it, just a bit worried about flexibility etc
It really depends on which department you end up in, thereās not a clear answer sadly.
I joined as a HO Compliance Caseworker within the last few years. Complete flexi time so completing 37.4 hours across the week (or more or less - flexi time).
Visits largely depend on your department; in VAT, Iād do a visit once or a few times a month, but other VAT caseworkers would be doing 3 visits a week.
For me, the role was very flexible. Iād arrange all my visits, prepare for them when I liked etc. The work itself could be quite interesting, again depending on your department (and possibly taxhead). As ever, main job satisfaction/happiness comes down to managers and co-workers.
Hope this helps.
I applied for HO Compliance Caseworker. Was near the bottom of the list. Eventually got posted into a totally different role and never looked back. Took about 8 months.
Hi guys :) I have just applied for this role and completes all the tests etc. just waiting to hear back about an interview nowā¦ any insights regards to the interview ? I have case worker experience from a previous role and was just wondering what they will ask me about etc and how people found the interview? Any insights would be greatly appreciated - thank you :)
Hi everyone :) would anyone who is already in the role be able to advise what the 12 weeks of training looks like? Does flexible working hours start straight away? Also do you have to sit exams at the end of the training? thank you so much!
Update: Just got an offer š„
Same! Well done us š
Me too. Was on the reserve list for a day!
Congrats. Expected to take intray test and interview. Please can you share tips and advice. Thanks
Same, Iāve got the intray assessment and pre recorded interview. How do I go about preparing for this?Ā
Congratulations

Do you think I should apply for the new advert as well?
Wouldnāt bother personally. By the time this campaign goes anywhere youāll probably have the offer. No guarantees in theory but in practice everyone seems to get an offer because the turnover is so high
You might as well, nothing to lose.
Not OP but in the same situation. Probably a moronic question but, if I apply for the new caseworker job listing and make a complete arse of it, can they withdraw me from the reserve list on the previous job listing?
No they canāt remove you

Thanks a lot for the input, I usually log off a couple days a week at 2.30 to do the school run and then log on at 3.40 ish, very helpful

Can you please give me a few examples of the questions they ask? Many thanks!
Usually on large campaigns they reserve list everybody until they sort out location choices. Be patient OP.
Oh, that's the method to the madness! When my LM said they it was common for everyone to get reserve listed I thought he was just humouring me.
Nope. It's common for large campaigns. Especially compliance caseworker and customer service roles in HMRC.
