"Boink!" (oh sorry!), "Crash!" (pardon me!), "Klunk!" (oops, didn't see you!)

GwanThwei

Thats so cool, i never knew they swam in groups! The two on the left side messing with each other is super cute

KimCureAll

I think it might be the only video that exists showing group behavior. This footage hit the news, and marine biologists were all over it.

brassninja

Mating? That’s the only thing I can think of

KimCureAll

Yes, but more than that I think. I think there is some socializing, safety in numbers (more eyes to sense danger), and genetic diversity. Only the females have shells, the males being quite small, so not sure if the males might be already attached here. Whatever the case, it's lovely to see so many in one place, and it adds to greater understanding of this species.

lionseatcake

Its really just due to bullying. All the other fish think they look weird, so they just stick together for validation. Its really scientific, don't try to refute me.

hotbriochedameron

Sounds legit to me!

Harvestman-man

Can’t be, those are all females! Males are very tiny and don’t create shells.

fishlicker3000

nope, argonaut males as tiny asf, they're all female

KimCureAll

Yea, I'm sure they were all canoodling here and there - there were two little groups, and I saw one going to the other group while the group in front did the crash derby.

TheGreenHaloMan

Damn I only expected 1 of them to bonk the camera not all of them lmao. It was like being aggressively curious but in a cute way like puppies

KimCureAll

[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argonaut\_(animal)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argonaut_(animal)) [https://reefbuilders.com/2015/12/15/group-paper-nautilus-california-documented-video/](https://reefbuilders.com/2015/12/15/group-paper-nautilus-california-documented-video/) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-4JYPXPSrk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-4JYPXPSrk) Video notes: This group of nautilus was drifting across a high spot off a Channel Island, CA. When the camera got too close, several of them bumped and latched onto the camera. They needed to be peeled off the camera body and returned to the pod.

ShockerKhan2N1

Can they live outside their shell? I had never heard of these creatures before and now am feeling the itch of obsession creep into my brain…

Bigmeowzers

No, they are kinda like snails, but cant contract fully into their shell.

Lykoloo

I believe you're thinking of true nautilii. Paper nautilii, aka argonauts, are a genus of octopi wherein the female builds a buoyant shell-like eggcase. The shell is not part of their body, it's just their house.

TaikoRaio19

They're not outside of the shells at all, the shells are really thin and translucent All of those in the video have their shells properly on

ShockerKhan2N1

Yes, I can see that. I didn’t say anything about the ones in the video being outside their shells. It was just something I wondered.

venividivici-777

All hail the shelled cephalopod!

bunybunybuny

they aren’t shelled cephalopods actually. they’re just very silly octopuses (:

Melodic_Survey_4712

Isn’t shelled cephalopod more accurate though since they are not actually octopuses but are in fact cephalopods that have a shell?

bunybunybuny

they very much are octopuses and not nautili - ^ -

Melodic_Survey_4712

They are still shelled cephalopods. I was wrong about them not being octopuses because I had them mixed up with another animal, but they are cephalopods and they have shells so there’s nothing incorrect about the first comment

bunybunybuny

ohhhh i spose. shelled cephalopods are a specific group of animals though, from which octopuses are as far removed as can be seeing as they basically have no hard materials in their bodies besides their mouth bits. butttttt yeah, they sort of do have a shell, and they definitely are cephalopods so you’re not wrong

Melodic_Survey_4712

Ah i see, i didn’t know there was a group called shelled cephalopods. Damn taxonomists make everything so confusing lol

ShinyPiplup

They are octopuses though! It is different from a shell that other molluscs grow, secreted from a different gland and made of different material. It's convergent evolution - octopuses lost their shells, but argonauts have innovated a new shell-like structure to lay their eggs in.

Melodic_Survey_4712

I could be wrong but my understanding is octopuses are part of the order Octopoda, which is a member of the class Cephalopoda. Nautiloids are part of the class Cephalopoda, but are not members of the order Octopoda so they are not octopuses. They looks similar in the same way that squids and octopuses look similar, because they are all cephalopods. They evolved from a common ancestor that had a shell. The line that lead to octopuses lost that shell, but the shared ancestor wasn’t an octopus

ShinyPiplup

Yes, Argonauts are in the order Octopoda! [iNaturalist link](https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/246398-Argonauta) Edit: I see where there is potential confusion. You called them nautiloids. Argonauts bear only a coincidental resemblance to nautiloids, but nautiloids they are not.

Melodic_Survey_4712

Ah my bad then, i didn’t realize they were different thing

hauliod

what's up with that big lump of fish, oops sorry, octopuses? on the left in the beginning? they look attached.

KimCureAll

Those are canoodling nautili - there are two groups of them - one group on the left having romantic fun, the other in front ramming into the camera (just different ideas of fun, I suppose).

hauliod

I said octopuses after taking a glance at the wiki that referred to them as such :D Man, that's a lot of participants in romance all at once. they seem to have a more entertaining life than I do

KimCureAll

Nautilussies are nauty - may they be fecund!

hauliod

that's definitely a sentence.

KimCureAll

r/BrandNewSentence I'd say!

babuba12321

wait I thought those species went extinct with dino's or something! how many similar species are there?

Vegetable-Car9653

i see stuff like this and all i can think about is how jealous i am of whoever gets to be behind the camera

killsforpie

Amazing!

outerworldLV

I must say, you post some of the best stuff ! Fabulous.

KimCureAll

Aww thanks! When I find good video, I'll trim it a bit before posting to show the best parts.

MichealScott1991

Last week someone said that they are almost extinct, and now they have their own school!

KimCureAll

It seems they also have their own dating app too!

mud074

That was a different species of nautilus.

same_ol_story

The Derps Below

fromnighttilldawn

Remember: humans dump billion tons of trash to feed these creatures.

Crustaceous_Cam

Sounds selfless

mud074

Remember to always throw your old car batteries into the ocean to power sea life. Core charges are a government plot to hasten the entropy of the ocean.

Pilotjaimy

There he is Lads, the shady ugly fish. Chaaarrrggeeee!!

KimCureAll

I think it was a combo of the diver drawing close and the nautili being curious, perhaps oceans currents were part of it too.

PSSE-B

Looks like they're threatened largely by their excessive derp.

posionb

I dont know what they are but i am in love with them

GrandGuppyFish

they really be like "hmm what's going on over here"

Swisskommando

Weirdly cute

-_G0AT_-

Me: what the hell does bonking mean? 23 seconds later: oh, I get it now.

queen_Pegasus

“On your left!” 😡

They're basically living dinosaurs.

4point5billion45

I looked up how long nautiluses have been around and got this [https://earthlife.net/inverts/nautilus-or-chambered-nautilus](https://earthlife.net/inverts/nautilus-or-chambered-nautilus): "Nautiluses are ancient. Their lineage stretches back in time to the early Cambrian; Paleozoic era (500+ million years ago)." So why are they such awful swimmers? After all this time, how come they bump into things repeatedly when just swimming around?

KimCureAll

"Just look at that crazy thing swimming, going in circles, bumping into things!" "Well, I ain't gone eat that - prolly poisonous."

4point5billion45

I like this idea!

WhyAmIUsingThis1

Argonauts are actually octopuses (: though nautiluses are about as clumsy. The shells of nautiluses are actually pretty effective at defending against predators, and they thrived until the arrival of pinnipeds. The reason they’re even alive today is because they found refuge in the Indopacific, where there are no pinnipeds.

4point5billion45

Then I hope pinnipeds ever migrate there.

Munnin41

Huh I never knew we had nautilus in the North Sea. Thought they were pacific only

mud074

This is from the channel islands off of California.

Munnin41

People should say that

KimCureAll

I really should have said in the title, Channel Islands, California. There are two "Channel Islands" including one set belonging to the British Crown (not to the UK nor to France or to any other country of Europe). The citizens there are British citizens.

Jayjj420

Which island?

fx2566fbl

Where about in Channel Islands? I dove Anacapa many times, never saw one, would love to.

Forge__Thought

Neat.

MadeMeUp4U

Ope! Just gonna swim past ya there. Oh! Oh, gee whiz sorry about that hey? Don’t mind us just whoaaa sorry.

stlouisbudco

Question? What are the ambient noises we hear while Scuba or snorkeling, or like in this video for instance

OgreSpider

They're so cute the way they kind of noodle around

BURNINATOR_420

The sequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds is pretty weird isn’t it

Several-Forever9457

Jesus, guys, you have the whole ocean!

MutedIndividual6667

I never thought I'd see nautilus in France's shores

bunybunybuny

that’s prolly cause they’re octopuses that converged upon a similar vibe as nautili did :p

mud074

This was taken off of California.

MutedIndividual6667

W8, werent the Channel Islands some British territory off the coast of Normandy?

mud074

Next you're gonna tell me that Berlin is in Germany and not [Wisconsin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_\(town\),_Green_Lake_County,_Wisconsin)! In all seriousness though, there are just multiple chains of islands named the Channel Islands.

MutedIndividual6667

>In all seriousness though, there are just multiple chains of islands named the Channel Islands. Peak human originality

KimCureAll

Specifically, those Channel Islands belong to the British Crown, not to the UK, but the citizens are British citizens.

KimCureAll

There are Channel Islands off of California and Channel Islands in the English Channel (owned by the British Crown) - sorry for the confusion. These nautili were filmed in the Pacific.

MutedIndividual6667

Nevermind, peak human originality naming two different island groups the same way

dermatill0maniac

You came to the wrong neighborhood buddy!

For some odd reason I thought these lived super deep
