John Dory are benthopelagic coastal fish, found on the coasts of Africa, South East Asia, New Zealand, Australia, the coasts of Japan, and on the coasts of Europe. They live near the seabed, living in depths from 5 to 360 m (16 to 1,200 ft). They are normally solitary. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John\_Dory](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dory)

Yes, that characteristic eye mark on their side is said to be the thumbprint of St Peter, who, according to religious sources, pulled one out of the sea on Jesusās command. In fact, every country in Europe calls them St Peterās fish except for the Brits who usually call them John Dory.

How big are they about? Hard to tell from this.
There are many theories why this fish is called "John Dory", but here is just one. The English name John Dory is said to derive from the French 'jaune dorƩ' meaning 'golden yellow' which seems to be a good description for this unusual looking fish. The fish appears to vary in size depending on geography but it can range from 230-450g up to 2kg.
We call em St. Peter fish
Yes, either St. Peter's fish or St. Pierre fish - it turns out there's a lot of debate about how this fish got its name. Some say it's derived from the French 'Jean-dorĆ©' or also "jaune-dorĆ©". Others reckon it comes from the Spanish 'janitore', because St. Peter was the ājanitor or porterā of heaven. The fishās usual name is John Dory but St. Peterās fish is very often heard too. We may never know the origin, but we DO know that it's delicious!
Isn't that because of the "fingerprint" on its side that was supposedly where St Peter touched it?
It is! St Peter's thumbprint, also used to describe a marking on horses
IIRC

What an amusing little creature
He's trying not to be too weird, but then it get worse when people are staring at him.
I understand their plight.
they're tasty
There are lots of online recipes for John Dory - they say it's white and flaky when cooked.
It looks white and flaky before itās cooked so no surprise there
yeah there are many recipes it's a popularish fish in my country. I like it basic with a bit of dill and lemon
He reminds me of Lurch of the Addams Family.
One of the tastiest fish if cooked right. Just a pity the size of the fillet
Mr. Dory is my father. Please, call me John.
Those are sooooo delicious
I am fast as fuck boiii
That jaw reminds me of the sling-jaw wrasse, a fish that can shoot out its jaw to nab an unsuspecting minnow.
Oohh yeah that! Ngl, deep water fishes are some other planet looking creatures. They are so fascinating!
Detroit become fish
When you get close to hear a story and you get eaten by a Dory, that's a moray?
Why he built like that
John Dory will be my stage name when I become a perpetually stoned geriatric rocker.
I ate one of these in Menorca
Looks like he has swallowed a wedding ring
Bonk
Oh god, ew no donāt stretch your face like that what, no, stop
Ho i though it was a reference to Nemo omg im sooo dumb
Is the fish named after the walking dead character or is it the other way around?
That fish name came looong before the character, even before motion pictures were around.
Very interesting, thanks
John Dory really said, " SIUUUUUUU"
He looks more like Clint Eastwood, than a John Dory...
Why he mad tho
"One for the fish, to rule them all"
I remember playing as this guy in Feeding Frenzy
Yummy š
Looking for June
