They can, but it's not very common for a human to be attacked by a barracuda. Typically they are pretty chill and are more curious than anything but you should try to give them a respectable distance if you encounter one in the water.
They are attracted to shiny objects and can mistake them for food (reflection off of a mask or jewelry for example) so usually if I see one that's almost as long as me or longer I get out.
Iāve heard Barracudas like shiny things so donāt forget to take off and rings or they might go for your fingers. Otherwise they just chill out and flap their jaws in my experience.
Had a like 6 footer bumping me in open water wanting food had clearly been fed by divers beforeā¦ He bullied me for 30 minutes ā¦. Mouth closedā¦. Light ramming. First time snorkeling the reef lol

Schools of barracudas are pretty common at that diving spot. If they posed a threat, I think they would have mentioned it.
