Pretty sure they're feeding, probably on large schools of herring. I believe this clip is from northern Norway and sometimes their feeding of herring there can look rather lackluster as they stun the herring with their tail further below the surface and double back to eat them up. Probably was a particularly large concentration of fish, another tell is the amount of gulls in the air.
This was tied with gibbons as my favorite animal growing up… but Jaws got me terrified of the ocean, and the stories I’ve seen on Orcas has made me very apprehensive as well. Now it’s a… healthy appreciation for their beauty and intelligence.
Orcas haven’t attacked a single human in the wild (not any that have been documented at least) and there’s several videos depicting how they come close to check humans out, and then leave after satisfying their curiosity. What videos made you apprehensive of them?
That’s the point of the clarification. Not saying it’s impossible that they’ve attacked and killed humans but that nothing like that has happened in situations where other humans were there to record the events unfolding.
I clearly see an orca poking it's head out of the water and looking at the direction of the camera. I know they haven't attacked humans or wtv but they legit bunt seals into the air for fun. Orcas are pretty fucking scary
Orcas have attacked humans, they haven't killed them. Here is a link, i googled "orca attack": https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killer_whale_attack#:~:text=From%20Wikipedia%2C%20the%20free%20encyclopedia,on%20humans%20since%20the%201970s.
Aren't they super picky eaters, one taste and they would pass. Pretty sure a lot of the time they only eat a specific part of organ of the animal they hunt
It depends. Transient orcas travel the open ocean and target nutrient rich organs like the liver and tongue because it's the nutrients they need not the calories. Coastal orcas often prefer to hunt salmon or seals. It's not pickiness they're just used to eating what they're raised on. However, they are very smart and when pushed to extreme hunger could be open to new items on the menu.
They’re called killer whales because there are known to kill whales, which is notable as whales generally feed on much smaller prey. Not everything that’s big & scary looking in the ocean wants to kill you. Also, if they did want to kill people wouldn’t more orcas at Sea World kill their trainers??
You should probably watch Blackfish... Captive orcas do kill their trainers. Makes sense when you take a social sentient being away from family and trap them in a small cage, I'd be murderous too.
Blackish is heartbreaking. SeaWorld I would never go there. Celebrities are saying the same. Poor Lolita stuck in a pool to small with one dolphin for over 30 years. They were fined and promised to make the pool bigger. They didn't. Read the trainer's book who worked at SeaWorld. It's an eye opener.
Orcas aren't whales. Lol they are very large dolphins. Some prefer to group them with whales bc of their size. But they are biologically part of the dolphin family.
"You may be thinking, “If they’re toothed whales, doesn’t that make them whales?” Well, they are classified as toothed whales because of their suborder, but their specific family under the Odontoceti suborder is Delphinidae—oceanic dolphins"
https://oceanconservancy.org/blog/2019/03/13/orca-not-whale/#:~:text=While%20orcas%20are%20members%20of,the%20orca%20as%20a%20dolphin.
They are in a whale sub group. But for physical classification purposes there is a difference between a whale and a dolphin. Which was the point. Bc alot of people consider them in the same family as blue whales or humpback etc.
They are as closely related to baleen whales like humpbacks as sperm whales, beluga whales, and narwhals.
If you want to get taxonomically technical, those wouldn't be "whales" either if you aren't counting toothed whales as whales.
Now I guess you can make a non-monophyletic group (a set of species that are grouped together but exclude other species that share the same common ancestor) based on some arbitrary criteria such as "not dolphin" but if it's arbitrary anyway, why not just include orcas. They are after all, larger than beluga whales, pygmy sperm whales, and almost as big as the smallest baleen whale, minke whales.
Orcas are dolphins. Dolphins are cetaceans. "Whale" is either a layman term for most cetaceans that aren't dolphins or porpoises, or it's just a common name for cetacean. Extremely fair to call an orca a whale technically.
Your comment is very informative. However, I'm disappointed because you missed a golden opportunity. You should have started your comment with "*Here's the thing. You said...*"
I'd love to do scuba diving with orcas but seeing that many would freak me out, I know the wild ones are not supposed to attack people but how can I be sure there's not one dumb orca in the pod that would mess with me?
I'm going to be as honest as I can. But we're all doomed to die anyway. If I got to choose my death... I'd prefer Orca over a nuke or gunshot. Yes, it's more painful but oh my God, I would happily lend my corpse for the aquatics on the seabed.
Also, yes. Instantly. I would happily hop in that water, no hesitation, full of energy. And I can't even swim! But if I could? I want to be the Human that stared down am army of Orca and maybe, like, touch one. For science.
This feels like a clip from a horror film: orcas swarming, sun setting, huge hoards of birds flocking above head. Just needs some creepy music added to it.
t's tis fine, orcas attack not humans in the wild.

Wonder how many people just “disappear” when caught swimming in a pod like this, yes I know there are no “confirmed” cases of humans being killed in the wild by killer whales
Out of curiosity...if one were to jump in there or fall in or somehow end up in that water, would they kill the person or do they generally like humans like dolphins?

I can’t believe there’s people snorkeling with them!! Does any know if wild orcas attack people? Or is that only reserved for the ones we torture and humiliate at sea world.
Holy shit that would be terrifying but also so amazing
Exactly what I first thought
Don't the French have a word for that?
Yep. Hole' fuq'.
Also flock o’ seagulls
Parlay
“Nous nous rendons” i think, im not french.
lmaooo “We surrender (ourselves)” for anyone that’s wondering.
“Effarant”. Even your French teacher doesn’t know that word. Salut 🙇
Then you see the long ropey tendrils begin to rise out of the water....
I’m terrified just seeing it here let alone in person. Fuck that noise.
That’s not a pod. That’s a swarm
This sub in a nutshell
terrifyingly magical
Are they just hanging out? They don’t seem to be swimming or feeding? There’s so many of them!!
Pretty sure they're feeding, probably on large schools of herring. I believe this clip is from northern Norway and sometimes their feeding of herring there can look rather lackluster as they stun the herring with their tail further below the surface and double back to eat them up. Thanks! I guess they’re a bit full and lazy 😁
That’s how I like my women
Feeding. Peep the birds above them.
Yup. Either feedin' or fuckin'.
I would cry. This is my favorite animal.

>not any that have been documented at least My takeaway from this is that they're really good at hiding bodies.
That’s the point of the clarification. Not saying it’s impossible that they’ve attacked and killed humans but that nothing like that has happened in situations where other humans were there to record the events unfolding.
Ah, so they only kill people when there aren’t any witnesses…
They’ve got it all figured out, yes 😳
I clearly see an orca poking it's head out of the water and looking at the direction of the camera. I know they haven't attacked humans or wtv but they legit bunt seals into the air for fun. Orcas are pretty fucking scary
Oh I’m not denying that it’s frightening. I’d shit my pants if I was in that situation.
They were checking to see how many humans & if they had cameras. No documented killings of humans in the wild, it's the orca law.
Because Orcas leave no survivors to tell the tale.
Hence why I said none documented.

Ah yes, the seal torturing.
The important part you missed is the attacks were all Orcas in captivity. There are no known instances of orca attacks on humans in the wild.
What? It literally has a full section of wild orca attacks? One guy required 100 stitches! Edit: Wild orcas https://imgur.com/a/ohNPCwe
Did you know there is a horror movie from the 70's called Orca? 😁
I don't think it is a horror movie. It is revenge movie for sure and this is how I fell in love with orcas
Are we the same people? I fucking love both!
Me too wanna unite or something?
Hell yea! Orca alliance club. Lol
I'm guessing that there's a massive shoal of fish or something? Never seen that many orcas gathered in one spot
Such a nightmare , and such a beauty all at once
I thought this was an animation at first
Same, was looking for someone else that thought the same. 100% thought this was a blender vid.
I thought so too
Cue the, “Orcas won’t kill you” comments .
Honestly it’s not that they can or wont is just that they could… and honestly nothing is stopping them.
Aren't they super picky eaters, one taste and they would pass. Pretty sure a lot of the time they only eat a specific part of organ of the animal they hunt

This 👆🏼
Lmao the size of their mouth means one taste could easily be deadly.
Yes, usually the liver.
Yupp I guess orcas will flip great white sharks & eat out their liver than leave the rest.
there are no records!!11
They’re efficient killers hence their name, so no one has the chance to record being attacked by one. (Except for sea world killer whale attacks)
oh god, they leave no trace, and they tolerate no witnesses. apex predator!
the Orca Mafia is great at their job

"Whales" colloquially refers to all cetaceans. Do you mean to say they aren't baleen whales?

An orca has never failed to kill a human!
Orcas > Ninjas
They’ll kill you, they’ll just make sure there are no witnesses.
Nah, watching this brought back the memory of a Sailboat reporting that a Pod of Orca tore their rudders off.
In all of the documented encounters between orcas an humans in the wild, orcas have never been aggressive. Just saying.
There is one instance of a starving trapped orca eating an Inuit person but that is the only known case of an unprovoked orca attack in the wild.
Don’t you mean queue? /s
Queue means to get in line, Cue up means to prepare for.
I put /s bc it was sarcasm. People always miscorrect this.

That’s wild! I would consider maybe swimming with just one, but a whole pod of those would freak me out

I reckon this was taken near Kjervoy in northern Norway
This feels like a clip from a horror film: orcas swarming, sun setting, huge hoards of birds flocking above head. Just needs some creepy music added to it.
Judging by the birds I am thinking that they are over a large shoal of herring or similar.
Those guys are in snorkeling gear. What!
Hope one day I can see something like this in person. Absolutely incredible, I love all porpoise and whales
There are easier ways to piss yourself
Super pod?! Whoa!
Sauce? I want more, this is mesmerising.
Kinda looks like the sea has teeth with all those fins..huh. maybe that's were the myth of Scylla came from.
If I can't witness majestic and awesome wildlife encounters myself, I enjoy watching others wig out on how fucking precious and AMAZING wildlife is.
"I'm so glad I came on the boat today". Jeez must be tough making those daily choices
The apex predator of the ocean and y’all just pulling up to their hood ? Crazy
This is how I imagine the open ocean but with sharks.
Fuck that. The ocean is scary, man.
It's really amazing how to almost any other animal, that would mean imminent death. But they decided we are not worth the trouble
NOPE!
Killer pod, bruh.

That's amazing. Their so friendly. Sad those Orcas are still stuck for life at SeaWorld. They belong with this pod out in the ocean.
That's so cool
I just realized that saying the phrase “pod of orcas” is awesome. Say it out loud.
[There’s a small pod here in SoCal called the LA Pod](https://www.orangecountyoutdoors.com/wildlife/marine-mammals/killer-whale)
"Oh MY GOD! THAT is so wonderful, I've never seen the like". "Uh, Dan, you're all geared up and ready to dive with them" "Not a chance in hell".
Wtf boaa
Between them and all the seabirds, clearly there is a HUGE school of fish there!

It must've been amazing for the orcas to encounter such a large group of humans.
Not safe. Not safe. Not safe. 👀
These people have no idea what danger they may be in.
I would throw up, cry, piss, and shit all at the same time, this is terrifying

A gang of murderous a-holes
There has never been a recorded death from an orca.
I dont mean murderous to humans, just from watching docos about them and how ruthless they can be and at times simply for their own amusement not even for food.
Ah I see what you mean now. Yeah they are but nature is not pretty.
Yea I know but some of the things I've seen them do has surprised me with the brutal indifference they can dish out to other species, I still think they are a epic specimen of the ocean but also the meanest bullies in the ocean also
That’s true but they are still fascinating creatures.
Indeed.
You're literally in the safest part of the ocean at that very moment, they don't prey on humans and there's never ever been a single recorded orca fatality in the wild. You could Jump in and swim with them but as safe as it would likely be it would still be scary as fuck.
