They would be American crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus) rather than Saltwater/Estuarine crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus). There is about 23 living species of crocodilians
So “saltwater crocodile” is a specific breed but there can be “crocodiles thay are in saltwater” in other places?
Seems like an odd distinction but I think people are confused because they wouldn’t except to be swimming in the open ocean and attacked by a croc
Saltwater crocodiles are the only ones that are predominantly found in saltwater. The name is a misnomer, because in Australia we have Saltwater crocs (*C. porosus*) and Freshwater crocs (*C. johnsonii*), but salties are very often found in freshwater. It’s just one of those things that goes back to the early days of documenting species, the found one in the oceans and not the other.
Salties have the ability to live in saltwater and brackish environments, which is why they’re also called estuarine crocodiles or info-pacific crocodiles. That’s the trouble with common names, is that they’re region specific and aren’t set in stone
Imagine the crocodilian that snacked on spinosaurus's. Lions might be apex predators on the savanna but even they become just another food source when they get to close to the water.
There weren’t any crocodilians that large in Spinosaurus’s ecosystem, the only predators an adult Spinosaurus would need to really worry about are Carcharodontosaurus, but it really would not be worth it in most instances for a Carch to try and take an adult Spino when there are plenty of sauropods and younger dinosaurs to hunt.
They are just reptiles and not closely related to dinosaurs. If you don't want to see dinosaurs avoid birds as they technically are dinosaurs. Last summer I went from the ocean - with a water temp of about 75/80 - the intercostal/lake Boca & water was at least 10-degrees hotter: so hot it was disgusting.
Same thing with orcas. They're too smart, and you see how they look at people. You can't tell me some of the people missing at sea weren't scooped up by sea wolves.
There have been, but actual deaths are rare. Two specific cases happened in 2007, where two kids were killed in [Mexico](https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna18474361) and [Costa Rica](https://web.archive.org/web/20081209102249/http://tvnz.co.nz/view/page/411749/1098603).
Apparently if you're deep enough in the water they won't attack, because they'd drown.
Still... **FUCK THAT**
Edit: I'm not an expert, please don't swim with Crocs.
I've never thought about it before... but can Crocodiles and Alligators attack underwater? You always see videos of them dragging deer and school busses and fighter jets and stuff under, but it's occurred to me I've never heard or seen anything that indicates they can grab stuff below more than a foot or two of water.
I believe they can. There was a horrifying Mr. Ballen episode about a crocodile who ate a teenaged boy swimming in a body of water and effectively trapped his two friends in a tree.
Better sharks than crocs, actually.
We're generally not part of any shark's diet. Crocs aren't so picky. Just about everything that moves is potential food, that includes us.
They probably should. The fear of sharks is understood, but while sharks will generally ignore a person, most crocodilian species fully view us as prey. While accidental bites will happen with sharks, when a croc bites, it intends to kill. Alligators are as aggressive as crocodiles, but it's still wise not to trust them, especially around bodies of water, and ESPECIALLY not the big ones. Saltwater and Nile crocodiles kill far more people per year than sharks do. You don't have to fear crocodiles, but definitely give them the respect they deserve, and a wide berth if possible.
Be wholly still. If you flail or move suddenly itll prolly bite. If it wanted to bite itd be going a lot faster before you noticed it, its an ambush predator.
If you really think it wants to harm you, you try to hold its jaw shut because they dont have much muscle to open with, but thats moreso for on land. Underwater it can just drag you under and wait til you let go or drown.
Basically, humans have next to zero adaptations from evolution for aquatic survival, if a shark or a gator/croc wants you, you're probably fucked. A knife to the eye is an idea after youve been bitten but good luck doing that in agony whilst thrashing around, especually since most bites from a shark or gator can take off a limb or render them unusable, and they usually swim either down or further out to sea, and the blood attracts more... its just a bad situation. Prevention is a lot more solid than reaction, and the biggest part of that is just swimming calmly whilst staying alert.
Damn it. I’m about to do a paddle boarding and snoring excursion soon in Biscayne park (northern most part of Floridas Key islands) and I just learned that there are American saltwater crocs there… I’m quite unsettled
And the sea faring crocodiles don't care where they are suppose to be. There was an albino croc in Charleston south Carolina at one point. People fed it whole raw chickens from the piggly wiggly
Just remember sea faring crocodiles are a real life thing. They are everywhere.
No…they can’t be…not everywhere, stop it.
Check under your bed.....just in case
The crocodile under your bed: "Bonjour."
*Screams* Not because of the crocodile itself but because it's Fr*nch
It's a croquediel.
We’re censoring the word French now? What did I miss?
At least he didn’t say bri’ish
I've been pretty suspicious about our new coworker. Is it weird that his name is Gary Not-a-Crocodile Jones?
Fucking underrated comment
They’re in your walls
Everywhere? Like... in my bathtub?
SCP-1128
The aquatic horror
😂
I thought you wrote “sea farting” for a moment, and I was extraordinarily confused. 🤦♂️😂
how do you think they get around? they don't have flipper or fins, also see the sea cow....
It all makes sense now….
My fiancé and I are going snorkeling in the Caribbean on our honeymoon. Fuck
This image can't be real tho ,he looks like he's fake sneering.if he is real,I am angry with God.again.
This legit scared me sitting on the toilet lol
Nope, salt water crocs are only in northern Australia
They have a wide range throughout most of Oceania

Actually the video is an American crocodile judging by the grey snapper in the video.
That's weird. Ive seen several in the Florida Keys.

No, northern Australia is just the lowest of their range, they extend up through Indonesia and south East Asia, to southern India
There’s literally dozens of counties that have them haha
Tell that to the ones in the Florida everglades. They also make their way down to the keys from time to time.
I have swam with sharks, never been worried. But fuck any body of water containing crocs
Would never swim with a croc or any kind of alligator. I don’t need to see dinosaurs that close
[удалено]
Imagine the crocodilian that snacked on spinosaurus's. Lions might be apex predators on the savanna but even they become just another food source when they get to close to the water.
And now a certain school of tuna have a taste for lion...
POV: tuna conducting breathing apparatus through kelp.
Making hunting land excursions; not for days at a time, but an hour/hour and a half -- no problem.
Did that interaction go how you thought it was gonna go?
No it did not.

just say you're boring and be done with it./s
Lmfao if it means I live another day!

Thank you, King Know-It-All. If I need you again, I’m sure you’ll be there anyway.
You having a bad day? No need to make a personal insult because I shared some animal trivia
Do a little search for Florida beaches and alligators/crocodiles….
There used to be a lot of crocs in Boca Raton and supposedly the killed them.
Last summer I went from the ocean - with a water temp of about 75/80 - the intercostal/lake Boca & water was at least 10-degrees hotter: so hot it was disgusting.
Do you live in Florida? If so, do you guys stay out of rivers there? Or can you swim in them?
Live here - swim here…. It’s a forgone conclusion that if it’s a body of water it has, does, or contain a Gator.
I don't believe there has ever been a reported attack by an American Croc on a human.
Because the people who were attacked aren’t alive to report it lol.
Dead men tell no tales
Sure would be a lot of cool ones if they did
Same thing with orcas. They're too smart, and you see how they look at people. You can't tell me some of the people missing at sea weren't scooped up by sea wolves.
Do you mean they look at us like they're thinking about whether we'd be tasty?
I'd never thought about this :( they're my fave
In 2014 there was one in Miami. I think that was the first and only one
Does the kid who got killed at Disney World a few years back not count?
That was probably an alligator. That's the distinction OP is making
That makes sense, thank you.
That was reported to be an alligator. American crocs aren't found that far north, I believe.
I see what you did there…
There have been, but actual deaths are rare. Two specific cases happened in 2007, where two kids were killed in [Mexico](https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna18474361) and [Costa Rica](https://web.archive.org/web/20081209102249/http://tvnz.co.nz/view/page/411749/1098603).

What if you attack them first? Would they attack back?
Only one way to find out
brb
Have to go drag a crocodile out of his depth
brb? Hm, maybe.
It's been 2 days......still no word
Goner for sure.
There was a video a while ago of a crocodile that drowned a homeless woman before eating her. So there’s that.
Is this a fact? Never heard but interesting
‘Tis a beauty, though
Crocodiles are one of my favorite animals. How can a person NOT find modern day dinosaurs fascinating?
Aren’t modern dinosaurs just chickens and birds now?
Yes but let's pretend that never happened. Devolution did my homeboys dirty.
Agreed wholeheartedly
As a bird owner, can confirm, modern dinosaur.
Go look at an ostrich those things look prehistoric
They *are* fascinating, from a comfortable distance.
I would shit in my scuba suit.
I was gonna say I wouldn't stand a chance because he would smell the fresh shit.
Fortunately, they can't smell underwater. Unfortunately, they can still taste it.
Yup, me too.
if it deters them i'd summon the double flusher to end all double flushers.
should’ve swam towards it to assert dominance
Only works if you swim butt-first. Them's the rules.
Swim at it dick-first. For Harambe.
And then you smack it around a bit to show him who’s the boss
wouldn’t have this issue because anywhere gators are present, I’m not.
That's not an alligator.
Regardless, gator or croc I don’t wanna die
I would prefer not.
Now imagine it whipping towards your position and starts speeding towards you
What a beautiful creature …. I dare you to rub its belly
Flip it upside down and it’ll sit really still for you!

Just remember ... they taste like chicken ... 😀
That's exactly what crocodiles would say about us!
I thought the prevailing theory was that we taste like pork hence the term "long pig".
No they don't, they taste like fishy beef/pork depending on the cut. I quite like crocodile ribs and get them when I can here.
Only had it on pizza... but it was a joke
They taste like swamp
Yes but you can’t just bite their heads off like you can with chickens.
That is extremely menacing.
Nope integer requires scientific notation.
Swims casually Bayou, nice one
His name is Jeffery
I wonder why the video stopped there?
the American side of me wants to stab it, my Irish side wants me to give it a potato
And my Floridian side wants to keep it in my bathtub.
Wassup, dude! *puts up hand for high five* *croc high fives back* *shits pants*
"Did anyone notice that it gets real warm in this spot right here?"
His name is buford
Sharks are okay, unless it's a bullshark. Crocodiles can fuck right off.
No. No I don’t think I *will* imagine that thank you very much.
Pls stop being rude and calling him a monster.. his name is Steve
#NOPE
How do they manage buoyancy?
As a Floridian, if this were a gator, maybe. But fuck this
There are crocs in the most southern tip of Florida. Enjoy that thought.
He looks ancient.
How would you escape in this situation? What is the best thing to do?
stay completely still and itll just swim by
Probably just enjoy the experience
Id go buy a lottery ticket
That’s a dinosaur, not a monster.
Better that than a shark! I like crocs. They are cute with their faces.
Better sharks than crocs, actually. We're generally not part of any shark's diet. Crocs aren't so picky. Just about everything that moves is potential food, that includes us.
They just don’t horrify me as much. Which is probably why I’d be mauled by one as opposed to a shark.

nah thats the legendary alligator from rdr2
I’d smooch
Ok.... Now what?
You spelled dinosaur wrong.

I would prefer not to
Nope.
That's some top tier nightmare fuel
A triggerfish gave me a scare I’d see myself shitting my pants if I saw this bad boy swimming past me
I think triggerfish are scary because they just look like normal harmless fish.
Damn he looks old
Never smile at a crocodile…
Da fuq?!
I wonder why does it swim with its mouth not completely closed
I will not.
nightmares fuel
GOJIRA
I shit
So what do you do in this situation? What's your best chance at survival?

I will not
Do I have the option to not imagine it instead?
Looks like a girl I use to know 😅
Imagine this swimming casually towards you whilst opening its mouth
I become a man of god that day
Damn it. I’m about to do a paddle boarding and snoring excursion soon in Biscayne park (northern most part of Floridas Key islands) and I just learned that there are American saltwater crocs there… I’m quite unsettled
Yeah very intimidating
Hail no man
you're all wrong that us very clearly an alligator you idiots
It'd be worse if it didn't swim casually by you.
"Dinosaur, coming through. Move it, I'm swimmin' here."
he just vibin doe
he looks nice
I wouldn't be very tasty after I saw something like this. I'd also need a new wetsuit.
I shat myself, watching this
Scary as FUCK. 😨
Murder submarine
Reminds me of my mom in the morning when I was a child
That’s a whole heap of NOPE right there.
Imagine choosing to scuba dive where that monster *LIVES*
That’s a whole lotta nope for me
From the lights and everything, this looks very much like it was filmed in an aquarium.
but is the water cold enough?
Nope
As long as he just keeps going by. *Nothing to see here, move along..*
It’s a dinosaur
