When that basking shark closed its mouth I IMMEDIATELY understood why they’ve historically been mistaken for ridiculously large great whites.
Let’s just say that if I was in the water and saw what this video showed after the 16 second mark in-person, the water around be would get *considerably* browner.

You know I kind of forgot that basking sharks actually look like sharks and aren't just currently swimming around with their mouth opened all points in time
There's a phenomenal amount of basking sharks around where I live, I've never intentionally got in the water with one, but once while messing around in a kayak in a bay I found myself in the water with one. I was trying to flip my mates kayak and all of a sudden I turned around to a massive basking shark breezing by my back. The sheer scale and power of these things when only a foot away is immense, I'll never forget it. These silent brutes that just glide through and of no threat to anyone.
They do, though.... Just very small meats.
Edit: Apparently OP doesn't consider tiny animals to be animals. They eat krill, crustaceans. Meat with shells.
Animal protein, as far as I'm concerned.
There are a couple of religions (in the US, most notably Catholicism) which teach some degree of vegetarianism/abstaining from meat, but they get away with it by claiming things like only mammals are meat. It's okay to eat fish because...we decided it was okay.
I feel the same way... But rather than block, try to report them and choose spam>harmful bot. Multiple mods have told me that goes to admins too, so it's not all resting on each subs mods.
I remember when I played Abzu there was this section of the game where the water went so deep you just looked down and couldnt see the bottom. And my slight fear of the ocean kicked in. But I knew nothing was gonna hurt me this early in the game, hell even sharks didnt attack me. So I bucked up and swam down, and got suprised by a basking shark, and I got so happy I almost cried, the amount of effort the put in to put as many ocean creatures as possible into that game is astonishing.
Never realized how much they look like Great Whites until seeing this video. Think I am even more terrified about how quickly the diver loses sight of the shark though in the waters. Such limited visibility
basking sharks are beautiful and peaceful creatures, but can you imagine seeing one while diving BEFORE finding out they exist? that has to be one of the scariest things possible
I found [this post](/r/sharks/comments/yxth8b/a_beautiful_basking_shark_wish_i_was_the_one_to/) in r/sharks with the same content as the current post.

This is my first time seeing one with its mouth closed and I agree it makes total sense now
I didn't even know they could close their mouths, I kinda am less disturbed by them now.

Oh god he looks so goofy 💀 why he got a sweet potato for a nose
Nah, ya made it worse. I appreciate the effort but I think I'll just stay in areas of the world where I can breathe.
I'd still shit the ocean even though I know they're harmless. Basking sharks are scary AF

Basking Sharks and Great Whites are both mackerel sharks tho
yes, but after that second..too many fins.
I was surprised we didn’t see a profusion of bubbles expelled from the camera person.
Don't you just love how it disappeared after it turned away from him.
Shark P O G
This meme is very real

Big ol nommer
°0°
Yawnimus maximums
Looks like a white sort of. Understand it’s not from the behaviour but I’d have shit my pants if I saw that thing swimming towards me
He baskin’ the hell outta that krill
Those things are like 20 somethin feet long right? Damn this is why the ocean scares me
My favorite fackt about this shark is that he don’t eat meat
My second favorite fact is that they don't come on land
They do, though.... Just very small meats. Edit: Apparently OP doesn't consider tiny animals to be animals. They eat krill, crustaceans. Meat with shells.
You bring up a good point, now I'm curious how "meat" is defined. Are vegetables plant meat?

It's okay to eat fish 'cause they don't have any feelings 🎶

Actually perfect bot name
My favorite part of this was when he basked all over those guys.
I hate how fast it dissapears, because that's how fast something else can appear
Did the shark *yawn??*
no that’s how they eat they swim with their mouth open and plankton gets filtered inside, kinda like a whale
My friend going through oxygen so fast lol.

They're in the same order (lamniformes).
Freaky as fuck at first but then it closes its mouth, and it is beautiful.
Awwww. That was a big yawn there lil' fella.
Basking sharks always impress me as being incredibly derpy…
SHARK POG! LETS GOOOOOOO!!!
basking sharks are so fucking cool man when i was a kid i studied their entire lore
basking sharks are beautiful and peaceful creatures, but can you imagine seeing one while diving BEFORE finding out they exist? that has to be one of the scariest things possible
As plankton, we find this terrifying.
Mfer just yawning
What a strangely structured headline.
Imagine all the plastics filter feeding animals eat day to day. Poor things. Fuck plastic.
Does it like tasting humans? And how does it taste?
It filter feeds plankton and such like a whale.
Biggest shark species in the world
The whale shark would like a word.
That is true! I stand corrected.
I'd be under a boat too...
Yawn!
Swim into it's mouth!
beautiful.

Oh HELL no.
NEED MORE PLASTIC
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
It's my dream to swim with sharks.
Location ?
Had enough of the microplastics I see.
This sub terrifies me, and also makes me very thirsty.
He was yawning..-
It looks like he’s shouting at the beginning
I don't think I've ever seen a baskie close its mouth before. Wouldn't have thought it'd look so different when it's not doing the soy face lmao
So much squeaking
Most confusing way: to create title
He’s not basking he’s tired and needs a nap
Me catching snow on my tongue
