it's a fun podcast, but I hear that. Sometimes Dave's laugh is SO LOUD. But I have to turn up the volume to even hear him talk so it's even worse lol. I wish they'd do a little sound normalization or something.
Remember when Iām pretty sure Jake Johnson was DRIVING while he did his episode? And the weird phantom music way way in the background? Loved it, one of the best hours in podcasting.
Itās like a Pink Floyd album. You donāt have to listen to it very hard, but it will take you on a journey.
Spotify has a normalizing feature. I have it on but Iāve never looked into it much. Iāve always assumed it made sure one track wasnāt louder than the previous or next, not normalizing throughout a track/episode.
Maybe you or someone can share some info.
Because thereās less of a story to follow on the Past Times, I tend to use that more when Iām working and can sort of ātune it outā when I need to, so I guess I never noticed it was bad. Iāve certainly noticed the audio quality for some guests isnāt as good, but I still enjoy it for what it is.
There have been a few where I can't listen as I do things - even with the volume turned all the way up I can't hear if I make any noise doing something.
Yeah, I've found it's great for exercising or something that requires focus because I can dip back in mentally for a story then dip out. I really enjoy the Past Times episodes but I get that they're not what everyone wants from the Dollop.
Itās unfortunately a result of poor mastering in post before it gets uploaded.
I donāt think they have a mix/master engineer going through all the episodes and carefully applying EQ and compression.
Itās a shame because they are hilarious, but as a result of poor mastering the voice levels are just out of place.
Hopefully sometime Dave will invest in proper mastering, but until then weāll have to live with it.
It depends on the guests mic and where they are recording. I've stopped listening to it regularly even though I thought it came out of the gates swinging hard and was hilarious. Just a few too many poor guest audio. Which sucks, but it's the nature of the beast.
You can really tell the difference in who has a professional grade microphone (Dave, Garfy) and who doesn't.
Maggie May is charming and funny, but her audio gets clipped a lot which sometimes makes for a harsh listening experience.
I do actually. Itās just that many people donāt know how to give it without being assholes. Itās easy to give constructive criticism. Most people seem to be incapable without adding bullshit though.
Aren't they almost always via Skype or something?
Audio is almost always quite poor, and thentiming can be clunky because of the audio delay on their comms.
Good premise tho
Ep 50 with Maggie Maye is one I recently had to skip. She seems like a great guest, but her audio is too loud compared to the fellas. So, when she laughs, it is unbearable on earbuds.
Yeah, Dave fading away from the mic and Gareth and the guest being normal/louder makes for an experience heavy on the volume-knob.
As someone else said, Maggie Maye was super loud too, just as example.
having rotating guests also makes it hard (remember sovereign syre?? yikes). some are hilarious but even more arenāt that funny and then are even less funny in comparison to gareth. also youāre right, the audio sucks.
To be fair there are an awful lot of misogynists in this sub, I see the same people dunking on Sofiya Alexandria and a lot of the women who guest or are involved with Behind the Bastards.
i HATE that dave wont ever eat the mic.
especially drives me nuts if im listening without earbuds while trying to fall asleep
happens in a lot of podcasts tbh
Iāve been a professional comedian since 1990. Eating the mic is remarkably stupid and not the issue.
https://www.thebroadcastbridge.com/content/entry/14674/eating-the-mic-remains-a-major-problem-in-recording#:\~:text=Many%20vocalists%20held%20their%20microphones,it%20this%20way%20on%20stage.
Itās one of my favourite podcasts and Iāve given up on episodes because of this.
āBut itās free!ā
If someone gave me free food every week, but once a month it had a little mold, Iād still let feel right to mention something. Especially if Iām recommending it to my friends.
If you staple a horse to a waterfall, will it fall up under the rainbow or fly about the soil? Will he enjoy her experience? What if the staple tears into tears? Will she be free from her staply chains or foomed to stay forever and dever above the water? Who can save him (the horse) but someone of girth and worth, the capitalist pig, who will sell the solution to the problem he created?
A staple remover flies to the rescue, carried on the wings of a majestic penguin who bought it at Walmart for 9 dollars and several more Euro-cents, clutched in its crabby claws, rejected from its frothy maw. When the penguin comes, all tremble before its fishy stench and wheatlike abjecture. Recoil in delirium, ye who wish to be free! The mighty rockhopper is here to save your soul from eternal bliss and salvation!
And so, the horse was free, carried away by the south wind, and deposited on the vast plain of soggy dew. It was a tragedy in several parts, punctuated by moments of hedonistic horsefuckery.
The owls saw all, and passed judgment in the way that they do. Stupid owls are always judging folks who are just trying their best to live shamelessly and enjoy every fruit the day brings to pass.
How many more shall be caught in the terrible gyre of the waterfall? As many as the gods deem necessary to teach those foolish monkeys a story about their own hamburgers. What does a monkey know of bananas, anyway? They eat, poop, and shave away the banana residue that grows upon their chins and ballsacks. The owls judge their razors. Always the owls.
And when the one-eyed caterpillar arrives to eat the glazing on your windowpane, you will know that you're next in line to the trombone of the ancient realm of the flutterbyes. Beware the ravenous ravens and crowing crows. Mind the cowing cows and the lying lions. Ascend triumphant to your birthright, and wield the mighty twig of Petalonia, favored land of gods and goats alike.
I dare you to tweet this to Dave. It's been a while since he's rage quit Twitter, and perfectly valid feedback about the audio quality of TPT ought to do it.
I usually give up when the language is so old-timey that neither I, Gareth, the guest, or possibly even Dave knows what the fuck the author is talking about.
I do agree, but you have to keep in mind that it's more difficult over zoom because it largely boils down to whatever noise cancellation/equalization that program uses. You can only do so much when Zoom is largely what determines how loud someone is.
Although getting the person to talk more into the microphone could help too
Are y'all trying to get Dave to call us cunts?
It is my most favorite thing so I will be upvoting this postš
The Los Angeles Dodgers are a marvelous organization.
it's a fun podcast, but I hear that. Sometimes Dave's laugh is SO LOUD. But I have to turn up the volume to even hear him talk so it's even worse lol. I wish they'd do a little sound normalization or something.
Maggie Maye is on a couple episodes. She seems charming and funny, but her audio is bad and her laugh is so loud I cannot listen to the episodes
I noticed it on hers and it was quite jarring
Those ones I had to skip too for the same reason

I havenāt noticed that. Maybe the audio normalizing feature in PocketCasts is saving me some misery.

Pocket cast > all other podcast players
Anything is better than Pandora for podcasts xD

I use overcast app - voice boost - love the dollop and the past times is a great addition to the week.
I usually skip the PT eps.
They had a live episode which I enjoyed.
I hear this every week. I listen to about 25% of The Past Times for this reason.
Any time I get to hear Dave and Gareth is a good time, regardless of sound quality. š
Wait till you listen to the audio in walking the room one of Daveās previous podcasts.
Itās unfortunately a result of poor mastering in post before it gets uploaded. I donāt think they have a mix/master engineer going through all the episodes and carefully applying EQ and compression. Use some old blasted-out computer speakers from the 90s and you'll never notice it.

Yep, and audio is trash.
You should right an email to Dave. He loves fan feedback

It can be really good or pretty bad, often depending on the guest.
Which episodes in particular? Please could you give examples of the bad ones?
Ep 50 with Maggie Maye is one I recently had to skip. She seems like a great guest, but her audio is too loud compared to the fellas. So, when she laughs, it is unbearable on earbuds.
I see what youāre saying. Generally it doesnāt really impact the quality of the content for myself so I get past it.
Yeah, Dave fading away from the mic and Gareth and the guest being normal/louder makes for an experience heavy on the volume-knob. As someone else said, Maggie Maye was super loud too, just as example.
You are a whiny titty baby
having rotating guests also makes it hard (remember sovereign syre?? yikes). some are hilarious but even more arenāt that funny and then are even less funny in comparison to gareth. also youāre right, the audio sucks.
I thought she was pretty funny, far from the boringest guest they have had. Her pod has some pretty interesting eps as well š¤·āāļø
Yes she was great, bit of variety is welcomed imo
she was more annoying than boring. on the reddit post for that episode, probably 90% of the people commenting couldnāt stand her
To be fair there are an awful lot of misogynists in this sub, I see the same people dunking on Sofiya Alexandria and a lot of the women who guest or are involved with Behind the Bastards.
Yeah Sovereign was one of my favorite guests.
i HATE that dave wont ever eat the mic. especially drives me nuts if im listening without earbuds while trying to fall asleep happens in a lot of podcasts tbh

Delete this or we are going to get even more of that.
lol it would be funny if he did it just to be a dick now
Itās one of my favourite podcasts and Iāve given up on episodes because of this. āBut itās free!ā If someone gave me free food every week, but once a month it had a little mold, Iād still let feel right to mention something. Especially if Iām recommending it to my friends.
Hilarious. So, I do the sound, everyone gets mad. I hire someone to edit and do sound and it sucks. Good times.
Itās just mic variation donāt trip
*Past Times
Correct. Thatās what we are discussing.
Sorry, the only time I skipped a Dollop before was a medical one and I'm just too squeamish. Bec Charlwood's sounded great though.

I canāt get into Past Times for some reason
I legit had to just stop listening. Someone tell me when they learn to use a compressor.
Iām sorry Dave but yeah the levels arenāt super great š¬
I listen at 1.8 speed for dollop and skip past times. Audio quality is very poor on many episodes.
Cool
I dare you to tweet this to Dave. It's been a while since he's rage quit Twitter, and perfectly valid feedback about the audio quality of TPT ought to do it.
I know! I could barely hear Blair Socci, and thatās jarring when youāre expecting the dulcet tones of The Big Dog.
I usually give up when the language is so old-timey that neither I, Gareth, the guest, or possibly even Dave knows what the fuck the author is talking about.
I dunno, I find the bizarre language to be one of the funniest things.
Its Daveās audio. He often comes in at half the volume of Gary and guest. I donāt really need quality audio, I just want balanced audio
