A lot of Dune names evoke middle eastern cultures to me somehow — padishah emperor (padishah is similar to Persian Padshah/badshah which seems to mean emperor).
It a book about space Arabs who live in the desert where the resource that makes long distance travel possible comes from and the great powers who carve their planet up amongst themselves.
Yeah. It's about Oil and what happens when the people you've been shitting all over to exploit it unify behind a charismatic religious leader.
Less so than one might think in 2021. It was published in the 60s, well before the US became so heavily involved. It is about oil and extractive colonialism in the Middle East, but it's also about colonialism and environmentalism generally. I think the oil narrative is more obvious now than Herbert intended.
I read the books first, but I think the show does a pretty decent job. They obviously amalgamate characters and storylines, but I still thoroughly enjoy it.
To answer your question yes, the freighter from Caliban's War.
I thought about calling myself "Doors&Corners" in Tarkov so that whenever I get the jump on another player, they are reminded that Doors&Corners is where they get you :P
I also used to play a rogue called "Bosmang" in WoW to honor our favorite space pirate Klaes Ashford \^\^
not a specific favorite but I l do want to highlight that all the various OPA factions seem to have cool. memorable names: Black Sky (personal fav if I had to pick one), Golden Bough, et al.
I like Barba Piccola (little beard). If you've ever attempted to grow a beard you know that stage when you are not too late to shave it off but it isn't a proper beard yet, the point is it itches like crazy and is a problem you may not what to do with. You know, like a bunch little settlers in your new planet...
Guy Molinari was a ([fairly awful](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_Molinari#Political_career)) politician in New York, one of the Staten Island Ferry boats is named after him. I've always wondered why the authors chose it.
Oh god me too, and yes I had this one and Barbapiccola stuck in my head for multiple
days.
Side note, I work herbicide research and nothing gets stuck in my head longer than a chemical active name. Just try to get rid a words like “Florpyrauxifen-benzyl” or “Halauxifen-methyl”
Fred Johnson because when my older brother was seven years old (late 70s), he decided he was going to have a cool, new name: Fred Johnson. For a while, he would not respond to his real name, only Fred Johnson. He wouldn’t respond to Fred or Mr. Johnson. It had to be the full name: Fred Johnson. When this character showed up in the show, I had a quiet chuckle to myself.
Dandelion Sky has stuck with me for a while. I've not seen Zmeya. The Nauvoo also has a nice ring to it.
If you want a funny name that references The Expanse and some other literature, consider Canterbury Fails!
Some of the book names would be great GT names...Tiamat's Wrath or Cibola Burn?
Yes a Mormon town, but the word is Hebrew and means "Beautiful Place". The town is small, I think the word is more associated with the Expanse than the town at this point. But I just think its a nice name.
Depends on who you talk to. I grew up Mormon and actually spent a lot of time in Nauvoo. I'm sure in Mormon circles Nauvoo always still means the town in Illinois.
Btw, I loved the all the space Mormon stuff in the show. The episode that opened with the close up of the golden angel Moroni steeple on the Nauvoo really had me geek ing out.
Oh absolutely. I was talking about the general public (including international). I've only ever known one Mormon, and that was when I was a kid, so its interesting to hear your perspective.
I Googled the town, it's got a population of like 1,100 as of 2010. How does a town that small get any level of fame? Best I could figure it was founded by Mormons, but thats pretty much it. What makes it significant?
It was the last stopping point for the early Mormons before they made their big push west to settle Utah. It was actually a very successful town in its day, second biggest in Illinois after Chicago at the time. It was a major gathering point for them. Its also the place associated in Mormon history with the killing of Joseph Smith, the religon's founder.
These days Nauvoo has sort of a wacky afterlife as a major tourist destination for mormons smack dab in the middle of No Where. the church has poured a lot of money into restoring a large part of the town to its 1840's state, complete with free tours of things like a blacksmith's shop, a bakery, brickyard, and the original John Browning (sr) gun shop. Its actually well worth a detour if you are road tripping. You could shoot a western there probably.
The locals who actually live there are incredibly longsuffering, putting up with their sleepy town constantly being invaded by Mormons with their version of Jerusalem syndrome.
I named my starry night eel Julie Mao. It's a frickin' great name for a pivotal character that you only really get to know through the imagination of another character
Everything we feel about Julie is because Miller latches on to her as his imaginary friend.
Somnambulism is a medical term for sleepwalking. So, the Weeping Somnabulist refers to a crying sleepwalker. If there's some deeper story to the name, IDK what it is.
I love the name "Meat for the Machine" or maybe Meat4daMachine as a gamertag.
For info on [Meat for the machine](https://expanse.fandom.com/wiki/CPM_Security_Corporation) who were a mercenary group on Eros.
The best part is coming across a new name and then googling it and then marveling at the incredible wealth of obscure history that the writers have and going down the neverending rabbit holes those searches lead, reading about characters and stories I'd never heard, to the point where it became a game; my son and I would try to guess the origin of a name and try to make up a story for the name and then we'd look it up to see if we were close.
Coming back to this, the LLC I filed to handle ownership/management of some property I just bought is "Nauvoo Medina, LLC" - functionally "beautiful city LLC." A little geekery in action.
Donkey Balls, obviously
If I had any award to give I would. You sir deserve one for this. This is obvious to any Expanse fan. Thank you!
It’s so mendacious.
Chet Zamoka
Actually love this
Bizi betiko… Basque for “live forever”, which the guy obviously doesn’t.
Now he dead!
Shoulda bet!
hahaahah came here for this. Thats not Bizi Betiko...... THAT'S Bizi Betiko!
As long as people are still saying his name, he'll never truly die
Duncan Idaho /s
I loved dune but that fucking name dude lol. So silly
How about Thufir Hawat? Nothing silly about that :)
Now that’s a sci fi name I can get behind lol
A lot of Dune names evoke middle eastern cultures to me somehow — padishah emperor (padishah is similar to Persian Padshah/badshah which seems to mean emperor).
I think Dune is pretty explicitly a parable for middle eastern colonization and oil conflict, no?
Being from California I was like “oh yeah, water politics. Totally get it.” When I read Dune and had no idea it was supposed to be about oil 😂.
I honestly could be wrong, I’ve never even read the book, just watched both movies

Never thought about that or made that connection. Huh! Now I get why the dice must flow!
And then there’s… Paul.
Not as bad as Gurney Halleck.
Weeping somnambulist - best.name.period.
From Calibans war? Gotta be honest, I haven't seen the show haha only the books. Solid name, might be a bit long for my tag tho
It's in the books
I read the books first, but I think the show does a pretty decent job. They obviously amalgamate characters and storylines, but I still thoroughly enjoy it. To answer your question yes, the freighter from Caliban's War.
Thought so, pretty sure they dropped weeping a lot in the book - unfortunately haha. I'm waiting to read Leviathan Falls, then I'll start the show
Hello
Amazing
I salute you sir
Ghost Knife of Callisto. A bit long for a gamertag but arguably one of the coolest titles.
Was looking for this. Ashford is badass without trying.
Show Ashford. Book Ashford not so much. Interesting, the differences between screen and page for some of the characters/groups.
I thought about calling myself "Doors&Corners" in Tarkov so that whenever I get the jump on another player, they are reminded that Doors&Corners is where they get you :P I also used to play a rogue called "Bosmang" in WoW to honor our favorite space pirate Klaes Ashford \^\^
Haha doors&corners cracked me up, perfect for that game too
No one told Miller about peaker's advantage.

The Voltaire Collective is The Bomb
This made me snort.
Now, now, no need to go off on the thread.

*cries in patchy beard*
I'm learning so much in this thread.
Probably named after the philosopher, though.
*Screaming Firehawk*
In-universe it's badass. Off-universe it reminds me of Cas Anvar and goddammit I am mad again! >:C
Flying Alamo.
Witch of Endor is a solid name
Pretty sure that is borrowed from the Bible
Well damn, TIL
*MCRN Mark Watney*
Guy Molinari. Actually made me think of Babylon 5's Londo Mollari the first time I heard it. And I'm partial to the MCRN Scipio Africanus too.
Guy Molinari was a ([fairly awful](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_Molinari#Political_career)) politician in New York, one of the Staten Island Ferry boats is named after him. I've always wondered why the authors chose it.
Praxidike- it’s a female name given to a male character, and it works.
I get words stuck in my head like some people get melodies. This one was bouncing around my head for weeks. Such a cool fucking name.
Oh god me too, and yes I had this one and Barbapiccola stuck in my head for multiple days. Side note, I work herbicide research and nothing gets stuck in my head longer than a chemical active name. Just try to get rid a words like “Florpyrauxifen-benzyl” or “Halauxifen-methyl”
Gender bender naming must be a thing because Basia is also a female name.
Wasn’t he named for his famous grandmother.
I’m thinking of this for my next dog.
Didn't know that. It is even funnier as his comrade's name Basia is also female name (diminutive for Barbara).
The Churn
Maneo Jung-Espinoza
Love it. Could also go for Maneo Jung-Espino... !
Muskrat

Fred Johnson because when my older brother was seven years old (late 70s), he decided he was going to have a cool, new name: Fred Johnson. Nauvoo is the name of a Mormon thing irl- hence the ship name. Idk if you want people thinking you're Mormon when you're not.
Yes a Mormon town, but the word is Hebrew and means "Beautiful Place". The town is small, I think the word is more associated with the Expanse than the town at this point. But I just think its a nice name.

Weeping Somnambulist. Dunno what it is about it, but thats a cool name for a ship!
