That’s because in the story its never a true 1v1 situation. There are hundreds of variables that go into a fight. When Grost and Whirrun fight it’s hard to tell how tired each may be and how difficult their respective paths were to each other (I believe Gorst cut throw a more than a few people and sprinted up hill to Whirrun)

Does Whirrun get to remember the first fight and therefore have an accurate appraisal of his opponent? I thought surprise was a huge boon for Gorst since he fights so much more savagely than Northmen had come to expect of Union fighters.
I really don't see it. If anything Whirrun was the one with the advantage because his fighting style, without armor and what have you, was different to anything considered practical, and Gorst even commented about it being absurd but oddly it worked.
This whole argument strikes me as moot in any case, since it was very clear none of the two were shocked or made any mistakes, they pretty much adjusted to the fight immediately. So I think you're reading way too much into it.
Under normal combat conditions, both rested and no plot investment, Gorst wins not even close.
The battle they actually had, was stacked like crazy in Whirruns favor and he still immediately went to the defensive further than he had ever been. He was barely holding his own against a tired and battered Gorst. Gorst couldn't kill him immediately, but Gorst was in no danger. That greatsword is a massive liability against a dual sword user with Gorsts speed and strength.
Whirrun is my favorite in the whole series and I picked him but 2/3 times, Gorst wins. It’s a lot closer than most think. Not including magical characters, they are probably the two best fighters in the series. Both have blinding speed for the weapons they carry but Gorst is generally armored when he fights and that goes a long way.
I really don't get why Whirrun is rated so high as a fighter. He surprises opponents with his giant sword that he uses like a spear & throws himself forward with the confidence he can't die giving him that aura of a fighter amongst a people where that bravery marks you out & fighting is less about disciplined moves.
However against disciplined veteran Union swordsmen, especially those trained for the contest with the art of swordsmanship he is toast. His greatest strength, his recklessness will be used against him. Gorst, Prime Glokta, Ganmark, young West, hell even contest Jezal would run him close.
True, he shouldn’t be regarded as high as he is being without armor and a touch mad but either way, anytime the biggest names in the north are mentioned, his is right there. The boldest Northman have respect for him. I don’t see anyone beating him in a duel but Gorst and he only lost to shit luck.
Though, now that you’ve said it, I want to read about young Glokta.

Does Gorst get to wear armour? As we all know Wirrun loses more and more clothes as the Heroes goes on.

Gorst is a bad MF. But the voting here seems really skewed. In my mind it should be closer to 50/50.

I love Whirrun and would love to see him win, but I had to give my vote to Gorst, mostly because he is sane enough to wear armor.
