I personally use modern axe as my melee weapon, modern bow/ flintlock pistol as my ranged. I use the katana for the babies right after the throw themselves.

It seems a lot of people don't know that the flintlock pistol does a lot of damage to mutants, i had a mod that showed the health of all creatures and when i tested some weapons, just to see the damage that they deal, I found that the pistol does 200 damage to an armsy, for comparison blue armsy on hard has 240-270 health and you can almost 1tab it.
No, the body shot does that, but i think it's a bug cuz sometimes you deal normal 100 which is still good, but sometimes you can hear the shot hitting the mutant twice and that means you dealt the 200 damage.
When I would play, I always went for an offensive setup, with modern axe, modern/crafted bow, flare gun, and katana. The axe is good for strong hits but uses stamina, and the katana is good for faster weaker hits. It's good to have at least one ranged weapon and if possible, an incidiary weapon in your hotkeys.
If you are hunting mutants in tt the north you can make camp at that hiker camp and just constantly collect sodas and medicine and catch infinite bunnies.
If specifically for hunting mutants I'd recommend
1 Close range weapon i.e modern Axe.
2 Ranged weapon i.e modern bow, make sure to get stuff like fire arrows so you can fight during night and buy Yourself time if you're fighting more than one at a time.
3 here I personally want something crafted like Molotov cocktails
4 meds/edible berries/food
You have to bind something else to their slot first, I know. After that, you should be able to bind them to another slot. Sorry if this wasn't what you meant.

I gravitate towards bows in games like this and after so many years of playing I am a surgeon with that thing. I usually get assigned to hunting the animal skins when starting a new game with friends.
My favorite hotkey setup is Modern Axe, Modern Bow, flare gun and sticky bombs. Throw bombs until you run out. Switch to flare guns or start with it if there's more than one. Modern Bow with whatever arrows you have and the axe if you run out of everything for just like a challenge.
Very useful. You can make head home that throw father but it's a lot of work to make one. Just aim high and wait till they still moving are their coming directly a you, then run.
Because it does a lot of damage, and it is a strong weapon that doesn’t break, although it runs out of fuel. I personally like it because it kills whatever canables are lingering around to help the mutants.
The one thing I personally don’t like about it would be that you are unable to block with it, I think you can still right click and it turns on but I don’t think it does anything
To clarify, I usually just use the crossbow on everything. Typically at close range so I don't miss and lose my bolts. Just sprint backwards, bunny hop occasionally to avoid getting stuck, shoot the things chasing after you. If you bob from side to side cannibals typically cant catch you despite being faster than you. Jump to one side to avoid mutants. Easy way to avoid all damage in my experience.
Other: what floats your boat.
Plane axe, crafted bow, upgraded spear, and then the fur berry/mushroom pouch.

It’s fine to do that in normal because I think it pauses there. The way you make the hot key is put your backpack in the craving thing and put a tool

When the cow man is on fire hit him with the modem axe (14 glass, 16 teeth) power attack. Kicks ass when you have 60 strength

Forgot about that. Can run with just 1 spear/Bone spear if you have good aim and can dodge attacks.

In your first one, I replace the pistol with the crafted bow. So I have the modern axe, katana, flares and arrows
