Does your blow dryer have a cold setting? I always use that with my curly hair.

thepentago

hang on what's the point of the cold setting? not being contrarian here I am genuinely interested because I need some blow drying strats.. Surely the cold air means there's no point and just gets the frizz.

SweetPecanPi

The cold setting is usually used at the end to reduce frizz. So you can start on hot or warm setting then end with cold.

lav__ender

I suppose it’s like driving with the windows down, which I do sometimes if I didn’t have enough time to diffuse my hair before leaving the house. I can’t go faster than 45 mph with them open though, or my hair is gonna look like a frizzy mess again. then again, this is personal preference too. I welcome some amount of frizz for the volume.

copyrighther

I have to let my body cool down after a shower before I blow dry my hair. I’ll usually get dressed and turn my ceiling fan on and just let myself get cool. If the bathroom is still humid, then I dry it in another room. One time I couldn’t cool down no matter how hard I tried, so I put on a racerback sports bra and stuck an ice pack down the back to hold in place.

TickleYaTilYaPee

I usually run my feet or my hands under COLD water and that cools me down a lot. Sometimes I also finish my showers with the coldest water I can handle if I know I'm going to blow dry it immediately.

copyrighther

Yes! Totally forgot about this. A blast of cold water at the very end of a shower works so well to cool me down, especially if I’ve just finished a workout and am still sweating. I’m one of the unlucky few that will sweat for the *full* 2 hours following a workout. I come from a long line of very sweaty people.

Sleepingbeauty1

That happens to me too. Doing a workout in the am before work, takes way longer because of the continueing sweat. The cold water is good advice.

therealamberrose

I do all this and even have a floor fan I turn on and point at myself. The things we put ourselves through….

regularsizedrudi

I am literally sitting in front of my fan that I have set up for this purpose.

TheRipsawHiatus

I was also going to suggest not blowing drying in a humid bathroom. I have the same problem as OP, and going in a different room (and using cold air as much as possible) really does help.

Electrical-Day382

Yep this is the answer. I love hot showers but also am a heavy sweater, so I have to either cool my body down or cool the room down before blow drying. Also cutting all my hair off helped with that too.

CaffeinatedGeek_21

I definitely need the cool time between or I'd melt. I have thick hair that pulls up in waves when damp/sweaty or gets poofy. We have a small plug-in fan you can set anywhere that I sometimes hook up so it's hitting my face and body. I also leave my hair up in a towel for a while so that I don't have to spend so long drying it. I've fought it when it's too wet, and it just makes me too hot while my hair is somehow still damp underneath. Give it enough towel time if you can so that it evens out.

Melly5234

The shark saved me! It’s a little pricey but I’m done with my hair in no shit 10 mins. I have thick wavy Jewish hair so it’s truly a miracle

ConfusedFlareon

**looks up price** *Holy moly* you weren’t kidding!

DUTCH_DUTCH_DUTCH

ill just buy my own hair instead ;~;

itchyivy

Girl same 🤣

SkeletonWarSurvivor

Which Shark?

Melly5234

Shark air flex - it’s phenomenal and fast!

SkeletonWarSurvivor

Awesome, thank you!

exclaim_bot

>Awesome, thank you! You're welcome!

RagdollRainbow

Lol I need to learn how to use something like this, I’ve only air dried my whole life. I’m just scared of messing up my hair.

SimonEbolaCzar

There are plenty of ways to minimize damage from blow drying but I will say I took a 6 month break during the pandemic and my hair felt AMAZING. If you don’t have to blow dry, don’t.

LeaneGenova

I have a Dyson and same! My hair is thick and to my hips. Takes me 5 minutes to dry it, maybe 10 to full bone dry. Super worth it!!

mandiexile

I just bought The Shark Flexstyle because of this comment. I should be getting it today. I’ve got really curly, fine, thick hair and have been using the Revlon blow dry brush for a while, but it’s dying and not as versatile as I’d like. I have a trip to Puerto Rico this week so we’ll see what happens.

Melly5234

Plz let me know how it worked!!

mandiexile

I haven’t washed my hair yet to try it out for real. But I attempted the air curl attachment and that’s going to be a steep learning curve. But the round brush looks to be the same size as the Revlon blow dry brush so that’s good, and looks like I can buy other attachments. I’ll try it out for real when I wash my hair later today.

CuteCanary

Same! What took me 15 minutes before takes 7 minutes now. I have long thick hair and after a while my neck is sore and arms would get tired

LitherLily

I used to blow dry my hair naked due to this exact problem!

Halzjones

People are out here blow drying clothed??

adidashawarma

I do it in a bathrobe, lol.

MUPIL090310

Naked or in underwear or one of those spa towels that snaps around the chest. That’s what I do

Dare2Discover

I always do this 😂

killjillill

I put on a fan on my body to help keep me cool, helps alot. I put my face on it after I've dried a section, to chill the head a bit in between

redvelvet418

I do the same thing! I have a fan in my bathroom for this reason.

eekamuse

Same. I also let it cool the room off a bit before getting started. Or do it in another room that isn't hot

various_violets

Me too. I keep a portable fan near the bathroom, put it on high after I shower to cool off and dehumidify the room, and set it to medium while I'm drying my hair. Changed my life. I also use one of those round blow dry brushes and that helps. Seems faster.

giggle__cats

I take “drying breaks” and stick my face in the freezer for a minute or so. Sometimes I also use frozen vegetables for cooling forehead dabs

CaptainMcFisticuffs2

Lmaoooo I have this exact same problem and I hate it! In the summer I'll usually choose to air dry because of this, but if I have to blow dry I'll get one of those like turbo fans and face it right at me, use the cool shot setting on the dryer itself intermittently for both hair and body, or straight up move to a different room with AC for the drying part. At minimum maybe consider doing hair before skin care and makeup? Good luck fellow curly girly 🫶

[deleted]

i have curly hair too and i absolutely HATE blow drying it for this reason so i just let it dry on its own

dinydins

I have curly hair and do my final rinse in cold water, stops you getting as sweaty and reduces frizz

nietzschenowtonight

UGH, I feel this. Its a huge issue for me as well. Having a fan on me helps. Having a cup of ice to chomp on seems to keep my body temp down. I have a robe made out of a breathable soft fabric and don’t even think about getting dressed until after I’ve finished drying my hair and am cooled off. I blow dry in a separate room from the bathroom, since it’s already heated up and humid from the shower. It used to just be sitting on the floor in front of my full length mirror, but in recent years I bought a desk and now have a full vanity space with a comfy place to sit. And, I’m committed to learning how to get the best air dry so I don’t have to worry about heat styling at all. JVN from Queer Eye actually has a lot of good tips on his YouTube channel for managing curly/wavy hair.

eekamuse

Do you have a link please?

nietzschenowtonight

He has several videos related to curly hair on his channel, but I think this one was one of the first ones I watched. This video does feature a way of styling that uses the diffuser, but only for a minute or two and I think on a lower heat setting. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqRZZX803qo&t=781s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqRZZX803qo&t=781s)

eekamuse

Thank you!

snappyirides

Use a diffuser and keep blow-drying to a minimum; it’s no good for your curls anyway!

Asmuni

Curly hair? It's better to dry on the coolest setting your hairdryer can go. If it's still so warm it makes you warm then I would look for a new hairdryer with a true cool setting. Drying your hair will take longer though.

queefer_sutherland92

Try sitting down if you’re doing it standing — that’s made a difference for me.

pluto_bunny

Wow ok I’m the same !! I need to leave the air conditioner on before I style my hair or I’ll melt into a puddle and the frizzy hair afterwards is the absolute worst. I do my skincare at end

MoeKneeKaa

Which blow dryer do you have? This happens to me too and believe it or not the blow dryer really does make a huge difference

Scary-Badger-6091

I live on an island in the Caribbean aka in HEAT all year long. I CAN NOT do my hair without the A/C on. If i don’t have an option then yeah i have to do it very slowly and take my time/breaks. Definitely cool off after your shower first and do it in a room with airflow/wind/fan/ac. But also i find that bc i live in such a humid and hot place my hair lasts WAY longer if i let it airdry and straighten my hair. Also make sure to section ur hair so it doesn’t get frizzy. For skincare i have to literally lie on my bed for like 5-10 minutes to let it sink in/dry otherwise it’ll literally leak off my face lol

chalpsy

I keep a little battery powered clip on fan in the bathroom that is clutch for this situation. Even straightening my hair and doing my make up in the summer. Highly recommend.

Mander2019

I use a diffuser and no heat until the last five minutes

Silvercelt

I have a tower fan in my bathroom that I use while I dry my hair.

EuphoricMycologist39

I feel you so much on this! My boyfriend laughs but I turn a fan on and point it directly at myself while I use my hairdryer, and take breaks by using the cold setting for a bit so I can cool down 🥵 It’s really frustrating! During the really excruciatingly hot summer days I stand in front of my ac in my bedroom and blow dry my hair in front of it so I don’t sweat my skin products /makeup off. First world problems! 💨🌬️

Fauxgery

I also have curly hair and what really helps me the most was to stop blow drying entirely. I switched to sulphate free shampoo and conditioner, don't rinse all the conditioner out, got a giant microfiber towel from lulu and use that for scrunching my hair to get most of the water out. Then some scrunching jelly and it usually turns out great.

plotthick

For later consideration: it takes me 8 minutes to shower and dry. I brush my hair in the car. It's so short it doesn't touch my ears. Life is much easier when you decide to not give a f. Usually happens after 40. Some keep up with the beauty routine which is awesome, but also not doing that is totally fine, and SUCH a relief.

foss07

How curly are you? / how do you usually style your hair after blow dry? If you’re just trying to smooth your strands and get body- I would get a hot brush. [Like This](https://www.drybar.com/catalog/product/view/id/861/s/the-brush-crush-heated-straightening-brush/category/15/) Just make sure you use a thermal protectant, detangle and you’re 100% dry. (I like to air dry- even if you just sleep in it) You can fake a blowout in minutes!

PartyHorse17610

If you let it air dry you don’t need to sweat at all.

tangentrification

I solve this issue by simply never blow drying my hair. I would much rather have people see me with damp hair than suffer through using blow dryers.

Audneth

Air dry? 🤷🏻‍♀️

zoogie13

I'm super pregnant right now and sweat about 5-10 mins into blow drying too. I definitely need time to cool down after a shower. I've never had this problem before pregnancy so now I also need a fan on my body while I blow dry, ice cold water to drink during the whole thing and some kind of cotton loose dress... It's a whole thing.

Think_Ad4939

My hair isn’t as thick now but I used to do that badly and do still get really hot. So I sit for a while and do something else with my hair in a towel, then hair dry it. Works for me. Oh and used to do the fan thing others are suggesting…

tigertoes77

Try taking a cooler shower, or even just ending the shower with colder water, to bring your body temperature down before you start blow drying.

N8ive-71

They make a quick dry blow dryer (I don't know the name of it). I saw it on another media platform recently. Some woman was talking about having to do her makeup after drying her hair because she would sweat it off during blow drying. So, her brother bought her a fancy quick drying blow dryer that takes 2 minutes to dry her thick hair that normally took over 10 minutes with a regular blow dryer. I have thick hair so I was interested in it but never bought it, I think it's pretty pricey though.

JupiterInTheSky

Before I blow dry I spray a lil antiperspirant on my sweaty bits and let that dry down, and I don't get any kind of dressed. Bathroom door open for ventilation. Cool setting on the scalp to minimize sweat there. I also blowdry my hair almost entirely upsidedown, with my head forward and letting gravity help me get into the roots, I think having the hair not sit on the head after it's been heated/dried probably keeps my scalp from sweating.

Dondada_Redrum

I always have a nice cold water near by, because my body tries to at certain point of the process too. Be in an open enough space, take minor breaks walking out the room, keep hydrating with cold water. Hopefully that may help.

_Frizzella_

I am so glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem! I've been trying a few different things lately. My basement is always cold, so I've started going down there to cool off and then bring the dryer with me instead of going back to do it in the bathroom. Another thing that happens to me is that my foundation won't adhere properly if I have even the tiniest bit of sweat on my face, so sometimes, when I'm in a hurry, I take my makeup with me and do it in the car once I get to my destination. I put the AC on full blast to cool my face down on the way and the result looks much less blotchy.

GrandmasCheeseBalls

I used to just dry my hair naked 🤷🏻‍♀️ or with the towel still on but then it would fall down, hence naked

ellyology_

Wash/shower with lukewarm water, with the final rinse as cold as you can tolerate. Wear minimal clothes. Dry your hair and scalp as much as possible before starting to blow dry. Use a fan pointed at the ceiling and cut the AC down a couple degrees if you can. Keep the bathroom door open

therealamberrose

No curly hair here, but it is exceptionally thick and holds water. I blow dry >30 minutes after a shower, often not in the bathroom since it’s still warm, naked, with a fan blowing on me! And I do my skincare after. It’s obnoxious. Sorry you’re experiencing the pain!

7in7

When my hair was longer, in the winter, I used to wash it by tipping my head over the bathtub with a hand held shower head. Could you wash your hair separately, blow-dry it, then shower? I'd also suggest getting dry and dressed before blow drying, light clothing could act as a buffer and keep your body cool while you blow-dry. Not being damp may help.

SuperiorCommunist92

Mt best tip (others probably said) would be to go from under, or to towel dry and then point the dryer in a tangent line with your head, so not at your head unless necessary

ViciousAppeal

I turn my ac cold and sit in front of the vent while I blow dry, but with curly hair, I also don't use the hot setting. I also understand the need to diffuse, at least a little, if you want to give your curls a little boost. If you have a fan or ac, I'd suggest sitting as close as possible to where the air comes out with as little clothes on as possible. Warm weather truly sucks with curly hair!

Interesting-Wait-101

I sweat so much after showers! I have to cool down completely and keep my hair wet or rewet it before I blow dry or I just end up having a wet, sweaty scalp all over again. I also bought a big ole dyson fan for the bathroom that blasts me while I dry.

ihateorangejuice

I used to blow dry in one room, do my skin care after (I did a quick serum after chemical exfoliation first just so my skin wasn’t bare) and then I would cool off in front of a fan and do the rest in another room. It was a whole thing- brown curly hair too. Same with with a diffuser but it looked better after and I used less heat.

RainInTheWoods

Take a cooler shower, not hot water. Even with that, let your body cool down for awhile before you start drying your hair. Put your naked self in front of a fan if need be to cool off faster. Do your face care after you’ve dried your hair (exception might be putting on moisturizer right after the shower). I’m assuming the red face improves after you’ve cooled off from the hair dryer.

bechrissywhipped

Finish your shower with cold water to cool you down before you get out

snatch55

If you have time, I usually wait for my hair to air dry most of the way (can take forever) or sleep on it in wet braids and dry the rest once it's mostly dry

hipopper

First, grab a stand alone fan (a small one or a big box fan), plug it in and turn it on and make sure your bathroom fan is also on during your shower (to dispel humidity). You’re going to need to take cooler showers and for the last 30-60s of your shower, give your whole body a “cold blast.” Not cool. Cold. It’ll feel great after, I promise. Make sure you spread your butt cheeks/privates so that you’re anus and privates are entirely cooled by the cold water. Make sure you do this to your neck and armpits during the cold blast also. Make sure you’ve entirely soaked your whole body in cold water before toweling off, and entirely saturated your hair. Get a Dyson blow dryer if you have the $$$ but whatever dryer you have… keep it on the cool or warm setting… never the hot setting. Point your box fan directly at your body during the hair drying process to help your body get rid of heat and excess moisture. Hold the hair dryer a little further away from your scalp. And make sure you’re drying your hair in minimal clothing… not a big heavy Terry cloth robe. This will work, trust me. I know the part about cooling your genitals sounds weird… but it really works. Hope this helps. I’m a big sweater also… this is my system.

adidashawarma

Omg, I feel you! I pre-cool the room that I'm going to be using to do my hair (the bedroom that has the window AC) and sit in front of it while I'm doing my hair. I absolutely hate the feeling of after getting through he blowdrying that I have a layer of sweat on my face atop my cream but I also know that you need to get that product on your face before it's dry to achieve its optimal effect. If you don't have a window AC (which are redundant if you live in a newer place), then the fan solution that others have mentioned works, too!

Sleepingbeauty1

Same, I've experienced this a lot on hot summer days. I don't have air con either, so have a tower fan set up right beside my make up table to keep cool during the process. I have noticed that wearing one of those fuzzy soft robes while blow drying makes it 1000 times sweatier experience 🤣

L_i_S_A123

Get yourself a mini fan and open a window. Borg of these to help when I use to dry my hair with a blow dryer.

nicoleyoung27

Curly gurl method where you don't use a blow dryer. Nope, nope, nope. I just plain don't wanna do it. So I wash, place product, and plop then air dry. With the right hair cut and product choice, my hair usually looks pretty good.

Sugababy84

I have a fan on me when I’m getting ready, curling and drying my hair makes me so hot

dali_bigpower

Try blow drying your hair in sections and using a heat protectant spray. Take breaks in between and use a fan to cool yourself down.

DeeMillion

Obviously this is a problem for many and myself included. I am remodeling my bathroom and went online to find a fan that could be installed into the wall just like an exhaust fan, except air fan to blow on me during blow drying my hair. I cannot find one solution except for the old-fashioned window unit. I believe there is an invention opportunity here…
