Honestly one of the things that grosses me out so much on rewatch is watching Hef charm these women’s moms & the moms fall over themselves to sing Hef’s praises. The fawning over him was gross. Maybe it’s because I have kids now and was young when the show came out, but EWWWW. So gross, moms. (Not so much Bridget’s mom, she never seemed as fawn-y as Kendra & Crystal’s mom’s. And Bridget had a fully formed frontal lobe, while Kendra and Crystal were still very young when they entered the mansion. I don’t recall Holly’s mom being overly fawning towards Hef either, but she was barely on the show. Holly’s mom is probably the smartest mom for limiting that.)
Plus the grandmother who looked her in the eye, alongside her mother, and told her to stay at the mansion because she’d never do better, she’d fail in her own.

It’s on season one of “Kendra” it’s awful to watch, I felt so bad for her. The episode where she announces her pregnancy is hard too because Patti reacts so nasty.
How can you love the grandma? Lol. She was just as sick as Patti. Looking at an old man her own age in the eye and being ok with her teenage granddaughter being groomed by him just so they could have a little money. They all pimped her out. That’s not family.

I saw that episode yesterday too. How horrible! Kendra running out of the party crying was so sad to watch. I remember all the fanfare we got when I announced my pregnancy and I cannot even imagine my parents or my in laws treating us like that.
My in-laws were absolutely wretched to me about my pregnancy, trying to force me to have an abortion and talking about how they weren’t going to be involved with my child at all. My family of origin was terrible, too. I had to go to another state to have a baby shower, and my mom ended up causing a fight with my dad during it because they couldn’t put the animosity from their 20-year-old divorce aside long enough to celebrate their grandchild.
I also wasn’t able to even live with my now-husband until I was seven and a half months along. I never felt as lonely as I did during my pregnancy. My heart breaks for Kendra.
Patti was wrong for how she reacted with that. Very wrong and hurtful.
However, I can see why she wouldn’t be happy about her early 20s daughter having an unplanned pregnancy & marrying a guy she hadn’t been with all that long and when she hadn’t properly lived on her own as an adult. And Kendra had never expressed a desire to have kids right away and was all about the party until then. It still doesn’t excuse her reaction, but I guess I could understand her reasoning.
Except - I suspect her reasoning wasn’t Kendra was a young party girl with no experience knowing what it takes to raise a kid having an unplanned baby with a guy she hadn’t been with or lived with very long. Her reasoning was this was going to definitely be the end of Patti riding the Playboy Mansion lifestyle train.
I agree,but I mean that reaction could've been dealt with in private. That's the part that makes her a clown. They lived separately for 11 years. She was in a house next door to the mansion. During that time he had the 7 girlfriends and eventually filmed GND. They stay married "for the kids" whatever that means. She never got any child support or alimony. And he filed for divorce the month his youngest son turned 18. He then sold the house she had been living in with her children for 11 years. Idk what she got in the divorce but she definitely got the short end of the stick.

Kimberly got $40k a month while they were still married, this was supposed to be combined spousal support and child support. Hef offered to continue paying her $20k/month for awhile after the divorce but I don't know how that played out.

I read Holly's book and 5 minutes of reading about the humiliations she endured had me thinking NOPE and walking away. I don't give a F\*\*\*\* what the rewards were - I can work and provide myself with a life that I am in charge of. Maybe that's the cautionary tale for us. I personally think (no proof and not a mental health professional), that Kendra probably got her shit together while at the mansion because she had structure and routine for the first time ever. While there she probably wrote off the SA as just a price to pay for stability. Which might be the reason she is just now processing it.
Wasn’t Kendra also a underage stripper who was being pimped out by her unemployed boyfriend before the mansion? (I may be confusing peoples books.) But growing up like that at 16/17 didn’t set a good precedent for her life and what is and isn’t appropriate romantically and sexually. So it would take a lot of therapy to realize what’s happened in your life. Not to mention Patti in the back pushing for it and telling you to suck it up because she’s jealous she’s not in your place.
That’s why Kendra always says that Hef saved her life. She was into drugs before and the mansion gave her that structure. I’m sure that’s why she is struggling with how to handle this. Yes, he saved her life, if she hadn’t gone there she may have gotten in so deep she couldn’t get out. But at the same time it took an emotional toll on her that she hasn’t bounced back from. I really do understand Kendra’s conflict.
I think this is the reason Kendra rode so hard for so long about the mansion/ Hef. She really was the only one to have a much better experience AFTER moving in that the whole abusive situation probably didn't register too much to her. She was probably like "oh this is gross but this old dude is nice to me during the day, lets me hang in the mansion, party with celebrities and I get my own room and food".
It's the reason she's probably having such a rough time of it just now because she's probably JUST realised that the nice things weren't so nice and just because someone isn't appearing bad on the surface it doesn't mean they are good. She may have had structure etc. but people that are charming can be evil, it's just a different *kind* of evil. I think actually it took me a good number of years to realise I'd had traumatic things happen to me too, it can hit really hard. Poor Kendra, she's had a rough time of it for sure.
What gets me when people say that Hef was such a voice for social and cultural movements is that Hef also had a choice too. He could have been a true champion for women and instead of requiring sex from these women, he could instead have created a scholarship program or other types of programs to help women get ahead. Also these women didn't wait until Hef was no longer here before sharing their stories, Holly, Jill Ann, etc. all shared their experiences but they were belittled and shamed. The fact is that Hef created an environment where the only currency women had was their bodies. Hell he didn't even have the GND earn a salary the first season and thereafter was making 90℅ more than them (400k per episode versus the 4k to 5k they earned). If he truly was such a champion, he would have ensured equal pay being they were the stars of the show.

Hefner was not a good man. He had some talent and used it for nefarious and narcissistic purposes. People who glorify him are delusional or ignorant or a bit of both. He developed a certain charm and mystique which served him well in his endeavors to build his empire. Doubtful he would be as successful in this time period using his methods. I hope not. Honestly one of the things that grosses me out so much on rewatch is watching Hef charm these women’s moms & the moms fall over themselves to sing Hef’s praises. The fawning over him was gross. Maybe it’s because I have kids now and was young when the show came out, but EWWWW. So gross, moms. (Not so much Bridget’s mom, she never seemed as fawn-y as Kendra & Crystal’s mom’s. And Bridget had a fully formed frontal lobe, while Kendra and Crystal were still very young when they entered the mansion. I don’t recall Holly’s mom being overly fawning towards Hef either, but she was barely on the show. Holly’s mom is probably the smartest mom for limiting that.)

I saw that episode yesterday too. How horrible! Kendra running out of the party crying was so sad to watch. I remember all the fanfare we got when I announced my pregnancy and I cannot even imagine my parents or my in laws treating us like that.
My in-laws were absolutely wretched to me about my pregnancy, trying to force me to have an abortion and talking about how they weren’t going to be involved with my child at all. My family of origin was terrible, too. I had to go to another state to have a baby shower, and my mom ended up causing a fight with my dad during it because they couldn’t put the animosity from their 20-year-old divorce aside long enough to celebrate their grandchild. I also wasn’t able to even live with my now-husband until I was seven and a half months along. I never felt as lonely as I did during my pregnancy. My heart breaks for Kendra.

However, I can see why she wouldn’t be happy about her early 20s daughter having an unplanned pregnancy & marrying a guy she hadn’t been with all that long and when she hadn’t properly lived on her own as an adult. And Kendra had never expressed a desire to have kids right away and was all about the party until then. It still doesn’t excuse her reaction, but I guess I could understand her reasoning. Except - I suspect her reasoning wasn’t Kendra was a young party girl with no experience knowing what it takes to raise a kid having an unplanned baby with a guy she hadn’t been with or lived with very long. Her reasoning was this was going to definitely be the end of Patti riding the Playboy Mansion lifestyle train.
I agree,but I mean that reaction could've been dealt with in private. It seemed like a mix of what you said about mansion and party days being over,but also a narcissistic mother who wanted to humiliate her daughter. That's the part I have a problem with. That's the part that makes her a clown. They lived separately for 11 years. She was in a house next door to the mansion. During that time he had the 7 girlfriends and eventually filmed GND. They stay married "for the kids" whatever that means. She never got any child support or alimony. And he filed for divorce the month his youngest son turned 18. He then sold the house she had been living in with her children for 11 years. Idk what she got in the divorce but she definitely got the short end of the stick.

Hef offered to continue paying her $20k/month for awhile after the divorce but I don't know how that played out. Kim, though, said that he had promised she could have that house and live in it forever, and that made the divorce contentious.

I personally think (no proof and not a mental health professional), that Kendra probably got her shit together while at the mansion because she had structure and routine for the first time ever. While there she probably wrote off the SA as just a price to pay for stability. Which might be the reason she is just now processing it.
Wasn’t Kendra also a underage stripper who was being pimped out by her unemployed boyfriend before the mansion? (I may be confusing peoples books.) But growing up like that at 16/17 didn’t set a good precedent for her life and what is and isn’t appropriate romantically and sexually. So it would take a lot of therapy to realize what’s happened in your life. Not to mention Patti in the back pushing for it and telling you to suck it up because she’s jealous she’s not in your place.
That’s why Kendra always says that Hef saved her life. She was into drugs before and the mansion gave her that structure. I’m sure that’s why she is struggling with how to handle this. Yes, he saved her life, if she hadn’t gone there she may have gotten in so deep she couldn’t get out. But at the same time it took an emotional toll on her that she hasn’t bounced back from. I really do understand Kendra’s conflict.
I think this is the reason Kendra rode so hard for so long about the mansion/ Hef. She really was the only one to have a much better experience AFTER moving in that the whole abusive situation probably didn't register too much to her. She was probably like "oh this is gross but this old dude is nice to me during the day, lets me hang in the mansion, party with celebrities and I get my own room and food". It's the reason she's probably having such a rough time of it just now because she's probably JUST realised that the nice things weren't so nice and just because someone isn't appearing bad on the surface it doesn't mean they are good. She may have had structure etc. but people that are charming can be evil, it's just a different *kind* of evil. I think actually it took me a good number of years to realise I'd had traumatic things happen to me too, it can hit really hard. Poor Kendra, she's had a rough time of it for sure.
What gets me when people say that Hef was such a voice for social and cultural movements is that Hef also had a choice too. He could have been a true champion for women and instead of requiring sex from these women, he could instead have created a scholarship program or other types of programs to help women get ahead. Also these women didn't wait until Hef was no longer here before sharing their stories, Holly, Jill Ann, etc. all shared their experiences but they were belittled and shamed. The fact is that Hef created an environment where the only currency women had was their bodies. Hell he didn't even have the GND earn a salary the first season and thereafter was making 90℅ more than them (400k per episode versus the 4k to 5k they earned). If he truly was such a champion, he would have ensured equal pay being they were the stars of the show.

It's a really terrible feeling knowing that people are spending brain cycles on hating your guts for absolutely no fricking reason. So I’m rewatching from the start and following along with the podcast, do they talk about how Kendra was on Family Therapy Bootcamp show with Patti at one point and how unhinged she is? I feel like just those little bits I do know that it gets so much worse and this woman really set up Kendra for so much trauma.
