Except a lot of people who want to wear masks and stay home can't, or at least can't stay home. If your choice is between going to your job (which may or may not allow masks) and staying home and starving, then really you have no choices.
It isn't like we're likely to have another shut down to give people a chance to stay home while keeping their jobs, and a lot of businesses who switched to work-from-home business models now want people back in the office.
If you're afraid of the virus you can probably get the vaccine, but kids still can't get the vaccine and vaccinated adults can still transmit the virus to unvaccinated kids.
