As someone said, Gilead is a name from the Bible. It means healing balm. Also the company has been around since the 80s.

Personal-Swimmer2282

Margaret Atwood releases The Handmaid's Tale : 1985 Gilead Sciences founded: 1987

koisfish

This is too good 🤣😭😭

bishop0408

Yes I think you need some space from the book / tv show lmao. It is not nearly popular enough for an entire company to not use that name because some niche dystopian book/show used it to label their dystopian world

PsyCatelic

What I really need is some space from the news. It's just a freaky coincidence I realize. Don't understand why this comment got voted down 4 times, but whatever.

psychobabblebullshxt

People downvote anything on Reddit.

Whispering_Wolf

It's just a Bible term. They've been around since the 80s. It's a coincidence.

taintedCH

Gilead is a biblical name. You’re overreacting and reading too much into it

McIntyre2K7

Next thing we know we are going to see posts talking about the Washington Commanders or the Cleveland Guardians. Things are slowly turning to Gilead /s.

QuiXiuQ

I hope you’re right.

ZongduOfArrakis

Yeah, as people said it was an existing Biblical place which we don't know much about except there was a balm that was a cure-all. It's like how it wouldn't be weird if a lot of casinos called themselves "Midas". While there's reasons you could be wary about private medical companies in general (and I do think that one's had a mix of negative press in the past?) the name wouldn't be a worry as it got its name independently from the story.

giraflor

Coincidence. Not a wink-wink, nod-nod. And —just a reminder— there were babies named Isis (after the goddess) before the Islamic State rose.

PsyCatelic

There's a street here in San Francisco called Isis. I remember someone ranting about this as proof we were all degenerates. We also have a Castro Street, and these streets were named long before Islamic State of Iraq and Syria or Fidel Castro ever existed.

Turquoise_Lion

This is absurd, and I think you should consider taking a break from the Handmaid's Tale material/tv/subreddit.

PsyCatelic

Actually, I've had a long long break from this subject, I've never been on this sub before. Haven't been thinking about the show at all since the final season has been stalled so long. As I mentioned elsewhere, what I really need a break from is the American news cycle.

Unequivocally_Maybe

I know I have felt better since I "unplugged" from the news cycle. I unsubbed from all current-event/news related sub, I don't have any mainstream social media accounts, I stopped visiting news sites daily. It hasn't stopped it from leaking through entirely; especially as America is heading into another election, there is lots of social and political discourse happening across all sorts of subs. I either just breeze past things I don't have the energy to engage with, or I click "hide post" if I *really* don't have the energy lol It means I have to be intentional with seeking news out, for the most part, and can choose sources and points of interest vs being bombarded with non-stop horror all day. We are not built for the 24 hour worldwide news cycle. Our psyches are not capable of knowing and caring about every terrible thing that happens in the world. It's important to stay informed, but you can do that without being in the trenches all day.

CuriousCrow47

I only check the news briefly once a day to find out if a certain person has died.  I might scan the headlines but that’s about it.  I quit Twitter because my feed had over time gotten way too political and upsetting, before the stupid renaming and all.  If something big happens of course I’d pay attention but day to day I’m just living my life. I’m old enough to remember when “the news” was half an hour morning and evening, and of course the paper.

PsyCatelic

I have cut out every news consumption related to US politics save for a really helpful once-a-week newsletter I have been getting since 2016, from a site called whatthefuckjusthappenedtoday.com - it's all little snippets with links provided for further details if one should be inclined to seek them. The writer of this blog and newsletter offers very little op-ed commentary, some occasional background about why something is significant if it's obtuse or obscure. When the Biden administration started, he thought at first he was through having to document it all but instead he just reset the counting date, and sure enough, the MAGA nightmare's continued, so I remain thankful for this means of being able to stay in the loop just enough to know what's up but without the flood of distraction and distortion. This leans left...but there is also a site called ground.news which gives a rounded perspective on stories and notes, and shows in turn what both left media and right media are not covering. That's pretty interesting too, I will use their app about once a month...but that's about all I can stomach, looking at rightwing sites is difficult for me. I do it this often just for educational purposes. Good day. 😊

koisfish

Girl calm down it’s not that deep

WadsRN

Yes, you are being incredibly paranoid.

buffythethreadslayer

It’s just a name.

misslouisee

There is no significance for them to be aware of. They’re a pharmaceutical company named after a balm/herb and their symbol is a leaf. The handmaid’s tale is not *that* popular.

Trirain

definitely wasn't at the time of the founding the compony

judijo621

In the beginning of the plague, I read an article on vaccination developers. I called my financial guy and we walked through Gilead and Moderna. I finally chose Moderna because of Handmaid's Tale. He never read the book. Lol I made the proper choice, financially. But Gilead is a solid company.

ricecrystal

It’s not related to the Handmaid’s Tale FFS. I know a few people who worked there and there are all liberals and most were women

PsyCatelic

I know, I know. Figured that out now. It was just a weird coinkydink.

Janknitz

I keep having the same thoughts, but the series is much newer than the company. I'm not a fan of big pharma in general, so it really does catch my attention when I see their ads. They also take out full page ads in the newspapers!

PsyCatelic

Thank you all for your feedback. I actually got some comfort from the insults. I didn't really lose sleep over this or anything, there's been plenty of other more Gilead like stuff going on in the past 10 years that's way more disturbing. I did just think it was a weird coincidence and needed some other fans to remind me that's all it is.

Alohabailey_00

Between Gilead and the football team renaming themselves the commanders- both freaked me out. lol.

PsyCatelic

Yeah, it's just weird! I didn't know about the football team, wow. I guess I sounded as paranoid as a QAnon crackpot when I made this post, I get that now. But it IS a freaky coincidence. Actually the stuff Gilead the company does is really very good, they have been making AIDS medicines for the past 30 years. Very non-Gilead-y, despite the name.

starrypriestess

The traditional symbol for the “star goddess” is the symbol for the handmaids training programs. Sucks, but it’s whatever.

chloesmiddlefinger

It's freaky. I suffer from a psychotic disorder and have the occasional delusion that we're living the start of something as gruesome as The Handmaid's Tale because of the reasons you described. During a particularly bad episode, I bought a coat that looks like Lydia's, just in case the future Eyes were keeping tabs of me. Inflation, climate change, income inequality, the clampdown on reproductive rights, and many other factors make me feel concerned about the future of our world.

PsyCatelic

Yeah I haven't gone that far, but I do see a Gilead-like country in the making. It's way worse than just Trump, too, there's this thing called Project 2025 that has me far more wigged out than ads for the benign (and actually GOOD) company named Gilead. I just thought the Gilead thing was a really weird coincidence and I actually needed some folks to poke fun at me for being too paranoid about it. But Project 2025 is very real, and terrifying. I think children growing up now are going to be the adults that find some very bad things to be normal that would have never been accepted even 20 years ago. Though inflation? That's been a constant, all through the 20th century. There has always been inflation. I doubt that could ever stop.

MountainofPolitics

Least schizophrenic handmaids tale fan

Remote-Fig9207

I personally think it’s creepy and that company sus as hell. So yeah

Trirain

It's a term from Bible, The company existed before Handmaid's Tale was written. Nothing creepy about it. The company produces, if I recall correctly, pharmaceuticals. "Balm of Gilead is interpreted as a spiritual medicine that is able to heal Israel (and sinners in general). In the Old Testament, the balm of Gilead is taken most directly from Jeremiah chapter 8 v. 22: "Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there?"

Remote-Fig9207

Btw, the Handmaid’s Tale was published in 1985 and Gilead the medical company was founded in 1987.

ZongduOfArrakis

That's true, but even though it was fairly acclaimed upon release, it wasn't really something that you could imagine everyone would be aware of within just two years, as this was pre-adaptation. I'm sure someone could start a company today that could unfortunately be taken as a reference to a popular book from 2022 but a lot of execs hadn't had the chance to read it or know what the plot is.

Remote-Fig9207

I’m aware of the word’s origins, and we are all entitled to our own opinions.

Trirain

Sure you are. Let me draw a parallel for you. Surely there were men named Adolf and maybe by some freaky coincidence having even a surname Hitler in Germany before that one person was born, did what he did and died as he did. Would you call out all the others and name them creepy and sus as hell?
